After the Second World War, many Germans escaped Eastern Europe and emigrated to West Germany. The Germans from Yugoslavia, Romania and Hungary organized themselves into Landsmannschaften (or Countryman Associations) where all villages are members.

The different villages have every year, or every second year, their Heimatortstreffen (or home village reunions) in different cities in Germany. They also have their own German publications where news from the old home village is printed, for example, who is arriving as an expellee, who has married, who has been blessed by children, birthdays, the date of the next home village reunion, etc.
