The "Working Group of Danube Swabian Family Researchers" or in German, "Arbeitskreis
donauschwaebischer
Familienforscher" is a society of over 500 members with headquarters in Sindelfingen,
Germany, and
specializing in Donauschwaben genealogy research. The goal of most researchers is to find
the ancestors who
were the original settlers in southern Hungary, and to find out where they lived in the old
German states prior
to migration.
The headquarters is located at the Haus der Donauschwaben in Sindelfingen, Germany,
where the society
maintains and extensive research library and cultural museum. The cultural museum contains
displays, maps
and pictures portraying the history of the Danube Swabians. One room is furnished to look
like a typical parlor
in a Banat village home, another shows displays of tools and artifacts from the Banat. A
large meeting room is
lined with glass showcases filled with mannequins dressed in Trachten from various Danube
Swabian
villages.
The organization publishes a quarterly newsletter that contains cultural articles and notes on
genealogical
research. Membership meetings are held twice a year in Sindelfingen and other cultural
events such as concerts
are sponsored. Membership fees are DM 40 per year, payable to Kassierer (cashier) Jakob
Schuy, Breslauer
Str. 12, 67659 Kaiserslautern, Germany. Various members are working on family history
books for their home
villages and these are periodically offered for sale.

*** GER-RUS mailing list
If you have German ancestors who moved to Russia in the 18th or 19th centuries,
particularly to the Volga
River, Black Sea or Bessarabia regions, you might want to join the GER-RUS mailing list
which discusses
genealogical research in these areas. Many of the ancestors discussed passed through the
Banat and even stayed
for a year or two before continuing the trek to Russia. To join the list, send mail to
LISTSERV@VM1.NODAK.EDU
