***** 8.0. TELEPHONE DIRECTORIES

Latest Update: 11 March 1997 (Links updated)
***** 8.0. TELEPHONE DIRECTORIES *****
keyword: FindPhone
Once you have managed to sufficiently explore your tree going back in time, you may find
that now you want
to fill in some of the allied lines. Finding long-sundered relatives is always fun to do. If
they have done any
research themselves, it can be very rewarding for your own research as well!
The computer age has begotten something called the Telephone CD. This CD-ROM contains
names, snail-mail
addresses and telephone numbers for all published households in a given country. They
typically come with
software which permit easy searches at least by surname, and sometimes by location as well.
Countries of
interest for which Telephone CD's exist include Germany, France, USA, Canada and
Australia.
*** Australia: Search of the Australian telephone system is possible via WWW
(see section
4. FindWeb above):
http://www.whitepages.com.au
It appears that these pages require both a location and surname in order to perform a search,
so it will not be
possible to search the entire country in one go.
In addition, Banat list member George Dragicevic georged@melbpc.org.au has generously
volunteered to look up surnames for any Banaters who believe they may have a relative
"down under".
*** Austria: Search of the Austrian telephone system is possible via WWW
(see FindWeb above)
if your system has a telnet capability:
http://www.bawue.de/~hanacek/info/edatbase.htm
*** Canada: Availability of the Canadian Phone CD is unknown, but Banat list
member
Elizabeth Barth (hanson@yorku.ca) has generously volunteered to look up surnames for any
Banaters who
believe they may have a relative in Canada.
*** France: The French telephone CD-ROM can be accessed via World Wide
Web (see section 4. FindWeb above).

At last check, there were many problems involved in trying to use this site. Let's hope that
these problems are
sorted out soon.
*** Germany: 1. The following information was posted on
soc.genealogy.german:
A new German telephone CD-ROM has been announced. This is what we've heard about
it.
D-Info from TopWare:
Price DM 49,95
TopWare PD Service GmbH
Quadrat O 3,2
68161 Mannheim
Germany
Telephone 0621-1267330
Fax 0621 1267333
The software (DOS and Windows) allows searching by: town->street->house number
town->name, name(whole country)->town telephone number (whole country) and much
more (including area codes, PLZs, etc.) It provides the complete postal address, including
street address and PLZ, and phone number.
In addition, professional genealogist Michael Palmer is the owner of a CD-ROM edition of
the German telephone directory. He will not charge one for a request, but asks a donation
towards a replacement, when that is available. Perhaps $10.00 per surname? He is *busy*
and so may wait a week or more for the results.
E-mail him at: mpalmer@CYBERG8T.COM
Send checks to the address
Michael P. Palmer; Box 765; Claremont, CA 91711-0765.
*** Switzerland: Search of the Swiss telephone system is possible via WWW
(see FindWeb
above) if your system has a telnet capability:
http://www.bawue.de/~hanacek/info/edatbase.htm
*** United States of America (USA). The USA Phone CD is available for
purchase at most
computer software stores. It may also be accessed free of charge at all Church of Jesus
Christ of Latter-Day Saints Family History Centers.
*** 8.1 Searching the Internet
keyword: FindInternet
It is also possible to search for relatives by their Internet address, possible that is if one has
access to the World
Wide Web (see FindWWW).
The URL to perform this on-line search is http://www.Four11.com/Sled.html
