(Eastern Orthodox)

I am searching for family ancestors from the village of Rebrin in Eastern Slovakia. My grandfather, Andrew (Andreas or Andrei) PUPAC married Anna TSINKULIC after the death of his first wife (name unknown). He was born in 1869, immigrated to the U.S. in 1910, and lived at Smithton, then Creighton (near Pittsburgh), Pennsylvania until his death in 1944. My grandmother was born in 1882 and died in 1945. Andreas / Andrei PUPAC and his first wife had two children, Mary PUPAC PASTOREK and Michael PUPAC. With his second wife, he had four children: John, Steve (Stephanos), Andrew and Anna PUPAC SHICK. Only Steve and Anna survive and live iatTarentum and New Kensington, respectively, near Pittsburgh. The family attended Eastern Orthodox Church in the U.S. My grandfather spoke Slovak, Hungarian and Russian and was a soldier (officer?) in the Austro-Hungarian army. He came to America to escape military action against his countrymen. My husband and I are planning to travel to Prague, Budapest, and Eastern Slovakia June, including Kosice. We would like to learn where we could find out more about my grandparents and their families. We would also like to contact someone in Slovakia who could assist us in this endeavor, since we do not speak Slovak and only a smattering of German. Your assistance would be most appreciated.

BARRETTE, Andrea SANDOR
eMail address: agbarrette@webtv.net

Here is what I know. The country was zechoslovakia (sic). It started out that Andrew SANDOR and Katherin DIRO had a son, Jojann in 1879. He was baptized in 1880 at St Michaels church at Zakas which I think is Zakarovce, Slovakia now. Jojann is my grandpa. He married Zuzann MIZIC, daughter of Stephen Mizic and Mary HOLUB. I dont know the date and place of the marriage but Zuzanne was from Hincovce, Slovakia and grew up around Murska Sobota. Zuzann had sisters Josephine, Dorothy and Katherin and a brother Jan. Jojann was in the Austrian Hungarian war. I have his military carnet from 1900 but I dont know how to translate it. He and Zuzann had daughter Anna in old country and came to America around early 1900s had 6 more children in U.S. I am really looking for living relatives in the old country. Jan Mizic would be around 80 now. I also have a picture of a Irocina Drahuska when she was 3 so she would be around 50 now, but if she married her last name was changed. Jan Mizic lived at Krompachy Slovakia at one time. Thats is about all I know. Thank you for your time. Peace.

BEDERKA, Steve
eMail address: stevebed@att.net or setoth@bigfoot.com

I'm seeking information on my grandparents, Anton and Anna BEDERKA, raised in the town of Lopasa or Lopasov, Slovakia -their siblings, relatives, their parents, friends, occupation of Anton, local church, when married, any children born, when they immigrated to the U.S., and where they first settled in the US. Anna worked as a chambermaid at Schoenbrunn for Emperor Franz Josef, near Vienna. I don't know what else she did. Around 1910, Anton and his six-year-old son, Stephen (my father), traveled to Lopasa from Lansford, Pennsylvania, and were prevented from returning by World War I until about 1920. Thank you very much for any information that can be found.

I am researching the following members of my wife's family tree but am having difficulty getting back to the "Old Country" for the following persons: 1) John Albert CSERVENY, born 6 July 1863 somewhere in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. He immigrated to the USA circa 1899 and probably resided at Cleveland before moving to the Steelmills at Pueblo, Colorado. He died at Pueblo, Colorado 14 November 1960. His parents names are Janos CSERVENY and Agnes TINKO, vital dates unknown, places unknown. They were married (date unknown). 2) Franciska Maria SPISAK was born 22 December 1874 somewhere in Slovakia. Her last destination prior to immigrating (through Bremen on the ship "Kronprinz Wilhelm" on 20 August 1903 to Ellis Island, New York was given as Mindszent, Austro-Hungarian Empire. There were numerous villages of this name in the Austro-Hungarian Empire prior the 1st World War. I am unable to determine which one. I have already done a search for the above in Bijacovce (Mindszent) with no luck. They may well have been workers in the village and came from somewhere else. Regards

DRAHO, Lisa
eMail address: ldraho@hotmail.com

(Roman Catholic)

I need assistance researching the names, dates and locations of parents of my grandfather John DRAHO and his ancestors. John Draho was Roman Catholic and born 5 May 1883 at Sipkove, Slovakia. I understand that my great grandfather's name was also John and his wife's name was Anna KLIO. They apparently came from Verbo in the county of Nyitra, Hungary.

DUCOMMUN, Ann ANDRASHIE
eMail address: ann410@newnorth.net

Josef ANDRASI was born 1 March 1882 at Szepesszombat (H) Spissk&s Sobota (Sv) (a district of the old Hungarian Szepes Megye (county) located in eastern Slovakia.) I believe his village is: Lándzsáso"tfalu (H) Horka (Sv), located 2 miles from Poprad and 14 miles from Spisská Sobota. He died 19 April 1953 at Ironwood Michigan, USA. Joseph was in the military service under Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria in 1905. He immigrated to America in 1907. In 1912 he sent for Veronica and their daughter Julia, age 5 to join him. All we know about his family is that he had one brother, Andrew and two sisters. We do not know the names and ages of them or his parents. Joseph's father died when Joseph was 3 years old. His mother died when Joseph was between the ages of 11 and 13. After the death of his mother, he went to live with a doctor and his wife at Bratislava, Slovakia. Joseph married Veronica LESCOVIANSKY, born 3 June 1887; died 1978 at Ironwood, Michigan, USA. Veronica's mothers given name was Magdalena. Magdalena's first husband died and she remarried. We do not know ether of these surnames or dates. There was 1 male child, August and 4 female children, including Julia and Millia (these are the only names that we know). Any information pertaining to our genealogy quest is greatly appreciated.

Today I found this Slovak website and on it was a message from Joe Marhefka that was entered on 30 October 1999. There is no eMail address so I can't contact Mr. Marhefka directly, but I would very much like to. My grandmother, Sophie Marhefka (1882-1950) was born at Relov, Slovakia, which at the time of her birth was still known as Austria-Hungary. I am sure that Mr. Marhefka and I are relatives, because Relov is a tiny village in the Spisska Magura, with a small population.
Webmaster's Note: His new email address just became available and is posted on his entry in the SKRL Archive.

HOFFMAN, Gudrun CIPKA
eMail address: Gudrun.Hoffmann@t-online.de

Dear friends: I live in Germany. I was geborene (my maiden name is) Cipka and also for a long time I have been looking for my relatives. My Grandfather, Jan CIPKA left the Slowaki (Slovakia) with his uncle, then he was 12 years old. They settled in the town Weißwasser (Weisswasser) in the East of Germany. But I know that other members of the poor Cipka family immigrated to the USA. The Cipkas lived at Banovce nad Bebravo, today it is in the Slovak Republik. I would be very glad to receive contacts from other members of the Cipka-clan. Regards.
The only Weißwasser (Weisswasser) I am familiar with is the one formerly located in Austrian Silesia that is now in the Czech Republic. Three FHL microlfilm rolls exist of the Roman Catholic church registers here (from 1727 to 1899) - start with #1196268. To make contact with ssssurname relatives in the United States, you need to either use a WWW search engine to locate U.S. web pages by a Cipka.

Also contact the Immigrant Genrealogical Society (IGS) at Burbank California. For a few dollars (finders fee) they will seek out and report the name, address and telephone number of persons with that surname.

HOMULOS, Jody
eMail address: Sunset1@aol.com
(Greek Catholic)

I am looking for relatives of my husbands on his fathers side. His great-grandmother on his grandmothers side wa Anna BLASKO born 1853 at Felsoszlovinka, Hungary, Austria, married about 1875 to George GRISSAK / GRISAK who was born in 1838. He was married before in 1872 to LISHKANA ? Geeorge and Anne's daughter, Mary GRISSAK, was born 9 October 1879 ? LDS records show that birth date to be 18 October 1880. She married Michael HOMULOS born 12 Occtober 1876. Michael apprenticed as a cobbler at Krompahl and served three years in the Austrian army at Presov before immigrating to Lethbridge in February 1902. His sister, Mary KOSTELNIK HOMULOS immigrated in 1898 and his brother Matthew immigrated in 1899. Mary GRISAK arrived at Lethbridge in November 1902 and married Michael HOMULOS in 1903. The midwife who delivered their 8 children was Mrs. Matt VASELENAK. I have seen that name in records from Slovak area. Michael Homulos worked as a coal miner. He was a member of the national Slovak society. He was very active at St. Peter and Paul's Greek Catholic church. Michael Homulos died in November 1976 at 100 years old.

John (Jan) MARKUS lived at Yonkers NY between about 1925 and 1980. He was single and as we know he worked as a waiter in the New York City hotels. He was born about 1901. POPE, Matthew
eMail address: Mattmpope@aol.com

I was born in 1947 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. My parents, Joseph Leo POPE (born at Sherricks, now Scottsdale, Pennssylvania in 1906) and Margaret Clementine KUSHNER (born at Homestead, Pennsylvania in 1907) were children of Slovak immigrants. I am interested in finding the birthplaces of my grandparents. Paternal: Nicholas POPE / POPPE (born 1867) married Mary SINAL (born 1869) in the United States. Maternal: John KUSHNER (born 1866) married Anna KUSHMA / KUZMA (born 1867) in the United States. Monsignor Joseph A. KUSHNER (son of John and Anna) was pastor of St. Dominic's Parish at Donora, Pennsylvania. To the best of my knowledge, all relatives lived at or near Pittsburgh, i.e. at Munhall, Homestead, Braddock, Uniontown. Any information would be helpful.

REYNOLDS, Susan

I am seeking information on the following people or their ancestors. Any help will be greatly appreciated. My great grandparents, Joseph KACHIR / KACIR and Julia YAMNICKI, were married at Stolica or Zupa in the Spis region of Slovakia, Austria-Hungary around 1880. My great grandparents ? GROHOVSKY and Katarina LACINAK were born, married, and died in Slovakia. My grandparents were Anna KACHIR, born 21 August 1882 and died on 18 January 1946 and Karol (Charles) GROHOVSKY, born 14 October 1879. They both died at Terre Haute (city), Indiana, USA. They were married 21 July 1902 at Hnilcik in what was then Austria-Hungary. Before they immigrated to the United States three children were born: Mary Emma GROHOVSKY, born 14 May 1903; Regina GROHOVSKY, born 6 June 1905 and infant Joseph GROHOVSKY born (?) and buried in Slovakia. My great uncle Ferdinand (Ferdie) KACHIR died in 1937. His wife was Paulina ?, who died in September 1968 and is buried at Presov, Republic of Slovakia. Their sons are Klement KACHIR who was last known to live at Bratislava, Rudolph KACHIR who was a teacher at Presov, and Stefan and Joseph, one of whom may live at Nitra. Either Stefan or Joseph may have changed his name to KACHIR to NOVAVESKY. There is also someone in this family named Beata KACIROVA DANIHELOVA. My great aunt Julia KACHIR married a Mr. SLIVA. She had 13 children. One of her children, Joseph SLIVA was still living at Hnilcik, Slovakia as of 1974.

SAMPSON, Stephanie

My great-great-grandmother was Julia FATULA, born in 1870 in what was then Eperjes, Austria-Hungary and what is today known as Preüov (Preueov / Preuov), Slovakia in the county of Saris in eastern Slovakia. I do not know who the parents of Julia FATULA were, however she apparently had a child out of wedlock named Mary FATULA who was born in 1890 also in Slovakia, probably Preüov as well. Julia and Mary Fatula immigrated to America in about 1899-1900; their voyage was sponsored by Julia's sister, whose name is currently unknown to me, but who was living at Eckley, Luzerne county, Pennsylvania and who was married to a Mr. MATISAK. Mary FATULA was sent to live with these relatives, whom she called "tetka" (aunt) and "strc" (uncle) throughout her life. Mary helped with housework, cooking, and the raising of the 4 MATISAK boys in Luzerne ccounty, Pennsylvania for 7 years, until she was 16 years of age, which is when she married Andrew KUSHNER, son of Andrew KUSNIR and Sophia KORNEC, both of Hungarian descent. Julia FATULA remained in New York and ultimately found work, later marrying German immigrant Herman STEDNER, a steel factory worker, with whom she had 2 additional children. These children, (one of whom was my great-grandmother), were half-siblings of Mary FATULA in Pennsylvania. The family remained close and visits between the relatives in New Jersey and those in Pennsylvania were frequent. I am currently in touch with various descendants of the KUSHNER and MATISAK lines, however there are still a great many gaps for us all to fill in. I am seeking the parents of Julia FATULA and Mrs. MATISAK (maiden name FATULA ... a sister of Julia Fatula), in the hopes that I can continue tracing their ancestry. Thank you. Please contact me directly for further information.

I am searching for the SEREDICH surname for the village of Koromla, Slovakia. My grandfather, John SEREDICH was born 26 July 1898 and immigrated to the USA via Ellis Island in 1912 with his sister Anna. Their mother, Bertha (Borbala ?) immigrated several years prior to their arrival, coming to Passaic / Clifton, New Jersey. They aattended St. Michael's Byzantine Cathedral, Passaic, NJ, where John Seredich married Rose Polinak on 26 July 1919. I would like to visit to village of Koromla, Slovakia, to see if we have any living SEREDICH relatives. Any suggestions? SEREDICH is an very uncommon surname and I have found several people from Belarus with the same surname who have immigrated to the USA within the last several years. This village must be very small, as I have been unable to obtain any information except that it still exists with about 500 inhabitants. Thank you for your help.

THOMAS, Gene

(Reformed)

I am researching the TAMAS and GECZ families. My father, Julius THOMAS, was born at Hrusov (between Roznava and Kosice), Slovakia in 1908. His father's name was Jan (Janos, probably) TAMAS (estimated birth year 1882). His mother's name was Barbara (Barbora on his christening document) GECZ (estimated birth year 1886). Julius' parents are shown to be of the Reformed religion. Julius was brought to the United States between 1913 and 1920 by his father. A second son, John, and three daughters, Irene, Jane and Elizabeth (Betty), were born in the US. Jan may have spent some time at Seminole, Pennsylvania, USA before moving to Detroit, Michigan, USA and then on to Lincoln Park, Michigan. Information on the village of Hrusov, and TAMAS and GECZ families there would be appreciated. Also, information on TAMAS activities in Seminole, Pennsylvania is desired.

TRIZNA, Dennis

I am interested in my family history in Slovakia. My grandfather, Anthony TRIZNA, was born at Bobrovec, near Liptow, in about 1880, and baptized at St. George's Catholic church there. He had a brother, John TRIZNA, who also immigrated to the US near the turn of the century. I would be interested in my family line, but also the general family name of TRIZNA and its origins.

I am trying to find information on Andras ZIMANYI (born 11 June 1906) and his wife, Anna GOMBA (born 26 June 1908) who emigrated from HUNGARY to America in 1957 and settled for a time in Detroit, Michigan. They had a son, Jeno (born 18 December 1939), who was 17 at the time they arrived in America. Andras' parents were Ferenc ZIMANYI and Ethel OSOBI. Anna's parents were George GOMBA and Agnes HORVATH. Andras died in Colorado in 1989. I have been unable to find a death record on either Anna or Jeno, so don't know if they are still alive or not. They may have gone back to Hungary, but have no information to support that theory. Does anyone know any of these people? If so, please contact me. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I shall be visiting Slovakia. Three days will be spent in Kosice which is near the village of my ancestors. My grandparents, MARY MAKUCH and MICHAEL KOPERVAS / KOPERVASZ came from Cierne Pole in Southeastern Slovakia. MARY MAKUCH, born 15 March 1894; MICHAEL KOPERVAS(Z), born 18 March 1888. They were married at Cierne Pole or nearby on 22 November 1912, anmd immigrated to the USA in 1913 or 1914. Michael's father was JOHN KOPERVAS and his mother ANNA CHALFA. They had 10 children. Michael and almost all his brothers and sisters immigrated to the USA, except 2 sisters that stayed in Slovakia - Mary and Susan. Susan may still be living as she was the youngest. I do not know her married name. John KOPERVAS and his wife Anna CHALFA KOPERVAS are buried in or near Cierne Pole. Mary MAKUCH'S parents were Joseph MAKUCH and Mary SZABOCSIK / SABOCIK. The SZABOCSIK family was were from a nearby village, Tegena, now called Tahyna and it is part of Pavlovce Nad Uhom. A good friend, John TKACS, and his son, also John TKACS, lived at Cierne Pole and they might know if ther are any living cousins of the KOPERVAS or SABOCIK families. I also believe the KOPERVA family was related to the KUDRICK family. I would be very happy to find relatives in Slovakia, and also I would like to find where my great grandp0arents are buried (John KOPERVAS and Anna CHALFA KOPERVAS.) Also, a great uncle SZABOCSIK is also buried there. What would you recommend I do ahead of time before I go to Slovakia. Is there someplace I can write to? I would appreciate any advice you could give. "Dakujem". I know how to speak only very very little Slovak. Also, do you know where I can purchase, ahead of time a detailed road map of southeastern Slovakia, that would have all the little villages on it? Thank you.<>br>
