GERMAN GENEALOGICAL DIGEST

P. 0. Box 112054
Salt Lake City, Utah 84147
First Posted: 10 April 2002

Looking out our window in Salt Lake City we can still see Olympic banners over 100 feet high with pictures of Olympic skaters and skiers adorning downtown buildings, but these will soon be coming down. One of the benefits of the Olympics to family history researchers was the remodeling of the Family History Library where hundreds of new computers were installed to provide access to new library and Internet resources. For example, birth and marriage records from over 300 parishes in the Rhineland have been indexed. We will bring you up-to-date on these new sources in an upcoming feature of the Digest.

Excellent articles and translations of older works will appear this year including "Colonists in Pomerania from the Palatine", "Germans who worked the Sugar Plantations of Hawaii", "Misspelled German Place Names", and sources for Ministers. A history of the Dithmarschen area of Schleswig-Holstein will be featured, plus funeral sermons & death notices from Hanover & Saxony, and a continuation of names of conscripts fleeing military duty extracted from Hamburg newspapers. Indexes from Bavaria, Hessen, and newly filmed sources for the Saarland will also be examined.

We have prepared a new series of easy-to-use reference guides to simplify German research. Schleswig-Holstein: Places, Surnames and Sources. Vol. 1 Places keyed to Parishes is now available. To reserve your copy, see order form below. This guide lists each locality in the former Prussian province of Schleswig-Holstein & identifies the county (Kreis) and Parish where Protestant church records can be found.

In order to renew your subscription, please send us the form below by April 30. Questions regarding your subscription may be directed to Elizabeth Meiger, e-mail: elizabethmeiger@hotmail.com.
