Looking for anyone with the surname SANTELJ. In the USA the name may
have been changed to :
SANTELLI, SANTELLA, SHANTELLI, SHANTEL. The name comes from the
Postojna, Smihel area of
Slovenia. If this name is in your family you may have some very nice
cousins in Slovenia trying to make
contact. Nada Santelj does excellant genealogy.

On the maternal side of family tree I am researching John JANES, Roman
Catholic, born at Suchen, Austria, 8
June 1885. He arrived 8 April 1900 aboard the ship "Maria Teresea" at
Baltimore, Maryland. His brothers
were: Frank, (St. Marys, Pennsylvania); Karl; Peter (Wyandotte,
Michigan). His sister was Anna
(SCHMIDT), last known at Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. His mother's
maiden name was either GLATZ
or GLUTZ. John worked as a lumberman in or about St. Marys, Pa where he
married Amelia POJE in May
1909. Amelia POJE, Roman Catholic, was born 7 July 1884. Her father was
John POJE (also a lumberman),
born 29 June 1860, died and buried at Memphis, Tennessee 3 January
1903. From his tombstone, his home
was at Mittergras Krain, Austria. Amelia's mother was Frances OSWALD /
OSWALDT, born 4 February
1862, died 8 December 1927 or 1929. Amelia and a brother Joseph V. Poje
(born 25 February 1889)
emigrated to United States while mother and a sister Mary stayed in
Austria. I heard Mary had a daughter
Stephanie living on the east coast (New Jersey area)? Later information
gave John POJE'S home as Frednja vas
Stev 4. Besides looking for connections, can anyone tell me where
Suchen, Mittergras Krain and Frednja vas
Stev 4 is? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
ERJAVEC, John
21830 Bruce Avenue, Euclid, OH 44123-1908, USA
I am searching and collecting the history of the Joseph ERJAVEC family.
I am trying to determine the
accuracy of birth date for Joseph ERJAVEC. According to court records
in Cleveland, Ohio, he was born 26
September 1869 at Straza, Slovenia. Ship records list him as being 38
years of age in 1913 and that would
make him born in 1875. Marriage records state he was 37 when he married
Rose Theresia 20 May 1912, at
Muho A Bran Parrish Sentlovrence. This would also make him born in
1875. A baptismal record from the
archive in Slovenia reflects a Joseph ERJAVEC, born 8 March 1973, at
the village of Visnja Gora, Velika
Loka, Dolenska. Does anyone know the proper archive or church to write
for a death certificate for Josef
ERJAVEC, in the area of Velika Loka?. Joseph died on 5 December 1935 at
Velika Loka, Dolenska.
His wife's name was Rose Theresia, and she came to America 5 February
1913, on the ship "Martha
Washington". The family settled at Cleveland. Joseph ERVAJEC divorced
on 17 December 1928. He left his
four children in his wife's custody and returned to Slovenia. I have
been unable to establish the date Joseph left
for Slovenia, or record of his return there.
Please respond by postal mail. I do not have access to a computer or
the internet.

I am searching for the birthplace or hometown of my grandmother, Mary
NOSE or NOSSE, who would have
arrived in Cleveland, OH about 1903 from somewhere near the Krka River
in Slovenia. She married a man
named SREBA then a Steve LENARCIC. She lived part of her life in
Barberton, Ohio, and Newton Falls,
Ohio. Her mother's name was MARGUARITE and her father's name was
JOANNES NOSE. She had a
brother FRANK and a sister ANTONIA who lived and married in Cleveland,
Ohio. She came over on the boat
to Ellis Island with a cousin who went on to Colorado. She mentioned a
place in Slovenia called
NOTTINGHAM but I can't find this area. I hope to travel to Slovenia in
September and am hoping I can find
more information before I go. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

I am searching for information on Alojzij KOLENC. He was residing at
Crni Potok2, when he was in the
Army in Novo Mesto. The date I have is 16 March 1905. He emigrated to
America in April 1905. He had
two brothers that I know of. One of them was Joseph KOLENC who also
came to America. According to my
grandfather's naturalization papers he was born at Mesto, Austria. My
grandmother, Antonija URBANCIC,
perhaps was from the same area. She emigrated to America in 1909 along
with several sisters and brothers. She had two nieces left at Mirna.
One was Marija URBANCIC at Vrhovceva 1, Ljubljana and the other
Ljudmila URBANCIC, at Sevnica 4, Mirna. Does anyone have any
information on these families. I
thank you for your help.

I am searching for any information on my grandmother and grandfather:
Frank POTOKAR and Ivanka
DOLENC(E) POTOKAR, Ivanka's birthdate was 4 January 1898, Frank would
have also been somewhere in
the late 1890's. They migrated to Ellis Island in New York from Kamnik,
Yugoslavia around 1920. From
Ellis Island Frank and Ivanka went to Henrietta, Oklahoma and around
1924 on to
Chicago to meet with Frank's brother John POTOKAR to work in the coal
mines.
Frank also had another brother Carl who settled in or around Detroit,
Michigan. Ivanka DOLENC(E) had a
sister in Kamnik that had a daughter that now would be somewhere around
the age of 53 who became a College
Professor. Frank and Ivanka had 4 children, Angeline, Frank, Johana
(Kegl) and John. Any
informtion on either the POTOKAR or DOLENC(E) families would be
appreciated.

I am looking for information on the following individuals: Anna
PETRASIC (maiden name unknown) and John
PETRASIC. Both were born at Metlika, Slovenia and traveled to Steelton,
PA. They had four children -
Marija, Anthony, Regina, and John. Marija was born 13 August 1878 at
Vas Sverrzaki, Posta Metlika, Austrija
Europa. I do not know the birth dates, nor places of birth for the
other children. Marija was my
great-grandmother. She married Marko KOFALT in St. James Catholic
Church, at Steelton, Pennsylvania on
24 September 1894. Marko KOFALT was born 16 April 1869 at Vas Rakovec
No. 12, Posta Metlika,
Austrija, Europa. Marko and Marija KOFALT had 18 children. Seven
survived to adulthood. Marko made at
least 3 trips to Europe to help other people emigrate to America. He
acted as their interpretor and guide. I
would be interested in finding out information on their parents, their
home towns, ports of departure, ships they
traveled to America on and port of entry to America.
In addition, I know that my grandfather's parents Anna POSEH SIMONIC
and John SIMONIC came from
Slovenia to America in the late 1800s (1880-1890s). I do not know their
city of origin, port of departure, port
of entry nor the name of their ship. My grandfather, Joseph Francis
SIMONIC was born 6 January 1906 in
Steelton, PA. He had older brothers Rudy and John, two younger sisters,
Genevieve and Mary, and a younger
brother Frederick. I am looking for any information to fill in the gaps
between America and Europe as well as
information about ancestors in Slovenia. Thank you for your assistance.

I am searching for any info that I might obtain on the surname HIKO.
John Richard HIKO of Glassport,

neither of which has any knowledge
of their fathers parents. They are believed to have emigrated to the US
and settled in the area around Pittsburg,
Pennsylvania. He married a Mary BALOGACH, whose parents were also
emigrants. Both Mary and John
were fluent in Slavic. Neither my wife or her sister are fluent, as
they were not permitted to learn

I am looking for anyone with connections to theKUHAR family or
Slovenians who lived in or near St. Anthony
(Kraintown) in Stearns County, Minnesota. All of the KUHAR friends and
neighbors came from the area
around Lake Bled and Kranj in Slovenia. Our family included father
Johan (John) born around 1826 and his
children: sons - Valentine (born Feb. 1844), Joza (Joseph) born July
1848 to 1850 and Anton (my
great-grandfather) born 1859 to 1861 and a sister Maria (Mary) born
July 1850 to 1852. Valentine came first to
America around 1873 and went to St. Anthony. The rest came in 1878 to
1880. I have not been able to locate the place of origin on the family.
Joseph died in 1890 and Valentine married
Joseph's widow Margareta RENGEL (or MAINVEL) a few days later in order
to care for her and their son
John. Last known location of Valentin is 1900 in Sauk Rapids in Benton
County (next to Stearns County) - he
is listed as a widower with no children. I cannot find any record of
his death or of Margareta or the child. The rest of the family moved to
St. Paul. One family member remembers taking the train to visit the
POGATSCHNICK family in Albany (next to St. Anthony) in the 1920's. This
family had so many newspapers
in the house her mother always said they were going to start on fire. I
am interested in talking with anyone
with connections to these families or the Slovenes in Stearns County.

I have come across your website after searching "Pravali-Karnlen,
Austria" on Yahoo. My grandfather, Fred
BOZIK, was apparently born in that city (village?), although I don't
find any real reference to it. I do see a
Prevalje, but after searching your site, I still can't figure out where
it is (where it was?) located. Austria? Croatia? He was born there in
1908. Family names are Bozik (Bozich) and Piko. If you can shed some
light on
where Prevalje is (was) located, I would appreciate it very much.
Thanks.

brother of Frank (Abbot Bernard)

Catholic records for these towns? Also, I
understand a biography of Abbott Bernard LOCNIKAR was published. Does
anyone know the title of this book
or where I can find a copy of it?

I am researching the family of Josef and Cecilia POVSE. They came from
the town of Krain (Krainberg) in
Slovenia, just south of Klagenfurt, Austria, near the Loibl-Pass area
which is along the boundary between
Carinthia and Carniola. Josef POVSE, born August 8, 1861, in Kranj
(Krainberg), Slovenia, was a Coal
Miner, and Village Hunter. He served in the Austrian military from
1880-85. Josef emigrated to New York
sometime between July and August 1901, from Havre, France. Cecilia
LUDIVICIA POVSE'S maiden name
was ZGONC OR ZGONCE. She was born 13 December 1872, at Kranj or Zgonce,
Slovenia. Cecilia
emigrated to New York on 20 October 1901, leaving from Havre, France on
12 October 1901. The ship's
name was "S.S. L'Aquitane" (French Line).
Josef and Cecilia had three children: Leopold, born 25 October 1893, in
Kranj; George, born 25 July 1894 at
Kranj; and Marie, born 6 December 1899 at Kranj. The children emigrated
to the U.S. with their mother. The
POVSE name was Americanized to POUCHE. Josef and his family settled at
Pittsburg / Frontenac, Kansas,
where he continued the family tradition of coal mining. Please respond
by postal mail. I do not have access to
a computer or the internet.

I am researching the BERGANT / BREGANT and HRIBAR family of Slovenia.
Anton BERGANT, born ?
prior to 1870 in Austria (possibly now Slovenia). He emigrated to USA
about 1900 with wife Agnes HRIBAR,
born ? prior to 1880 in Austria (possibly now Slovenia). They
apparently were married in Europe before
coming to USA, but when? Agnes had a brother, Anton HRIBAR born March
1870 at Schmareta, Austria,
and he emigrated to the USA in 1903. Anton BERGANT / Agnes HRIBAR had
several children, one named
Antoinette and was born in Wisconsin. Anton and Agnes BERGANT were not
located in Milwaukee,
Wisconsin Census records for 1900 and 1910. And I am unable to locate
any of above names or places of birth
in Austria. I believe Anton BERGANT died in 1920's and Agnes later,
about 1936, both in Wisconsin. I
understand they lived their entire lives in Milwaukee Wisconsin area.
Agnes's brother Anton HRIBAR (my grandfather) married and lived most of
the time in Eastern Ohio, around
the Black Oak, Glencoe areas, before moving with his daughter to
Midway, Pennsylvania. Is there anyone that
has access to information to location of birth places or death places
of my Great Aunt Agnes HRIBAR, and
Uncle Anton BERGANT, or the whereabouts of any living relatives of
above names? There is some family
remembrance that there was at least one daughter named Antoinette
BERGANT that married Henry
SWIRLOWSKI, but I do not know their whereabouts or if she is still
alive. I would greatly appreciate any
advise or help. Thanks.

I am seeking information on the TOMSIC family. Frank TOMSIC, my father,
was born 1 December 1871.
My mother, Rose (nee NOVAK) TOMSIC was born 26 August 1884. Their
children were Rose, John, Frank,
Joe, Marie, Jennie, Jean, Francie, Ed, Charles and Lawrence. They first
lived in Illinois and then moved to
Cleveland, Ohio in the early 1920's. I do not have a town in Slovenia,
any information would be appreciated. Some of the family changed their
names to Thomas when they came to Cleveland.
TONIN, Poldi

Is there someone with access to the Ohio and Pennsylvania Soundex for
years 1900, 1910 and 1920? I need the
a list of the ROSTAN'S and their locations for these years in these
places. There are not many ROSTAN'S in
America so this would not entail much work for someone to look this up
for me and send it to me via snailmail. My address will be given to
the wonderful person(s) who will assist me with this. Cleveland for
1920 has 18 Rolls and Pittsburgh has 22,
so you can see that a search of just these cities alone would take
untold hours of work that may prove
nothing.
NOTE: Minnesota has a state census every ten years on the fifth year of
the decade. Everyone looking for a
family who migrated might find it worth their time to investigate the
1895 Minnisota state census for Ely, MN
and surround area. The Slovenes make up the majority of the population
and was a major place of arrival in
America for those hired to work the mines. They moved on afterwards but
like Leadville, Colorado many
remained and make up the main population group. I will send to Al a
recent newspaper item about this which
he might want to edit for the newsletter.
