eMail address: 104545,3046@compuserve.com

This might be one of the hardest geneological mazes yet. My name is Jorge BALLIVIAN. I was born in Bolivia from a very traditional Bolivian family. However, many people, some of them Armenians, have mentioned to me that my last name, Ballivian, is Armenian. I know with much certainty that my family came to Bolivia in the XVIII Century and three Ballivians have been presidents of Bolivia. Can you help me, if possible, to see if there is any traces of this name in present Armenia? Is there any way to trace my last name to any Armenian roots? Thank you for your help.

BARTERIAN, Paulette

eMail address: PBARTERI@fcc.gov

My grandfather came over here from Armenia before World War I. He changed his name to Paul BARTERIAN shortly after he arrived. He may have gone to Wisconsin for awhile (that's where my grandmother lived). I think his first name was Bogus and his last name is close to Barterian, but has lots of z's and other letters. My father and aunts and uncles don't really know, my grandmother (non-Armenian) is now dead but couldn't remember his real name. Is there someone who could find out? I know his father was the Mayor of his town (don't know the name) and was publically killed with one of his sisters. How can I find out anything? He settled in the Detroit area. Thanks for anything you can do for me.
Webmaster's Note: The key clue above is that her changed his name after he arrived. If so, then his true name should be listed on the passenger list of the ship he emigrated on. I suggest you either 1) search the Hamburg passenger list for the years he likely emigrated or 2) engage a Professional Genealogist who is a passenger list expert and an Armenian expert - like Linda Avakian, A.G. for a day or two worth of getting your search organized and helping to "jump start" your search based on her expertise.

You also need to estimate his age, state what you know of his death date/year and place and list the full maiden name of his wife with what you know of her vital dates if thsi listing is going to do you and others any good.

BASMAJIAN, Osana S.
eMail address: SOSE@prodigy.net

(Orthodox)

My grandfather was Abraham BASAMAJIAN. He was a bookbinder and an Orthodox Christian. He survived the Armenian genocide but no one else in his family did. My grandfather made it to Aleppo, Syria. He married my grandmother, Makrouhi MULAKIAN, daughter to Ovsanna SOSE Mulakian. The three were from Marash, Armenia. That's all I know about my Armenian family history -- Abraham Basmajian was the husband of my grandmother Makrouhi MULAKIAN-BASMAJIAN. My great grandmother was Ovsanna Sose Mulakian. I was told by Dr. MAKSOUDIAN, my grandfather had a niece named Ovsanna Sose who married Aram KALAYJIAN. She died in 1961 in Watertown, Massachusetts. Thank you.

BROOKS, John

I am seeking information. The family name is TAKVORIAN. There was a marriage, I believe in Manhattan, NYC, NY, between October 1945 and December 1946. There was a divorce in NYC in 1954. City records are incomplete or inaccessable. Are New York City Armenian Church records perhaps available?

(Response from Nephi Kezerian, M.D.)
Dear John B.,

1. Consider using an assumption to help find search sources. Someone married in about 1945 may appear as a young child in the U.S. census of 1920. This is available in some Family History Library branches. Write to the Family History Library 35 North West Temple Street, Salt Lake City, UT 84150. Ask for a branch library near you. There must be one or more in Seattle.

2. If you have not searched phone-book names, consider searching telephone-directy cd-roms available in computer depts of local libraries, the FHS, or the Internet.

3. Since the two you seek, and/or their parents may have come by ship to N.Y., you may find them listed in ship-passenger lists compiled by Linda Avakian who compiled a book " Armenian Immigrants Boston & New York (1880-1897). While I do not see Takvorian in her list, she may still have some suggestions.

4. Treat the search as a possibly living, "missing persons"problem. Your local library might have a copy of "Tracing Missing Persons", 97 pages, Michael J Zoglio, Tower Hill Press, ISBN 0-941668-00-2 hardcover (or 01-0 softcover)

5. See the book Genealogy for Armenians, which a Family History Library branch can get from the Salt Lake City main library via microfiche copy for you to see. Or order (for about $10.00 by Email from a large genealogy supply company

6. I am sending this message on to three persons. The first to are developing Armenian research sites on which to place questions and answers. The last (Linda) wrote the immigrations book.

7. I do not personally which, if any, Armenian churches offer genealogical help. Perhaps the Armenian General Benevolent Union in N.Y. can give you the address of the dominant "Gregorian" church in N.Y. where the two you seek may have been recorded in church rites or otherwise as members.

Whether or not you get present results, be advised that genealogy is new to most Armenians but new accumulations of searchable records are comming on stream. Keep a record of everything you know. Even if you dont't find the data, others after you will need to have your data to proceed further. May a kind Providence prosper your efforts.

Thank you for your willingness to help me search a possible Armenian origin of my family. Is it possible to discover if there was an emigration of Armenian families to northern Italy in the last century? The family name - DA POIAN - doesn't sound like an Italian name; it seems to be an Armenian name.

My great grand father - Giuseppe DA POIAN - was born at Sedico, a small village of Veneto Province, at the northeast of Italy, on 15 July 1845. I don't know the name, the birthplace or the birthdate of his father. I only know that Giuseppe had two brothers, one of them named Angelo Da Poian. Giuseppe Da Poian was married in 1872 to Gioseffa Celeste DA RIZ (born 19 March 1849, also in Sedico). They had five children, all of them born in Sedico: Tereza Da Poian (born December 1877), Luigia Da Poian (born 7 May 1880), Luigi Da Poian (born 21 June 1882) - my grand father, Giuseppe Olivo Da Poian (born 19 March 1884) and Pietro Da Poian (born 12 Sept 1888). Giuseppe Da Poian, with his wife and chidren, left Sedico 11 November 1892 on a ship from Genova (Genoa) Italy to Brazil. This is the origin of the Da Poian family in Brazil.

I have found through the Armenian Heritage Park, at Providence, Rhode Island http://ns.providencieri.com/heritage park that there was a DEPOIAN family that lived at Khosmat, Palou (Armenia) by the end of last century. Krikor Depoian, the patriarch to the Depoian family, married Altoon, and they had five children: Elizabeth, Aghavni, Hamasia, Melkon and Sarkis. Melkon and Sarkis spent some time in the USA, and Hamasia married Minas POLOIAN and became American citizens. Many persons named Depoian live today in the USA and some are in Marseilles, France. I am wondering if any other Depoian left Armenia to Northern Italy, being that this the origin of the Italian Da Poian family. I will appreciate any information on my surnames or on emigration of Armenian families to northern Italy in the last century?.

DERSARKISSIAN, Denis

DERSARKISSIAN Armenian web page

I'm searching my Armenian background. My family came from Gurun in Turkey. Sahag DERSARKISSIAN and his wife Takouhi ARABIAN (or other spellings) probably both died in Turkey. I have no dates. They had 1 girl and 5 or 6 sons. Yenovk DERSARKISSIAN (my great grand father) was probably born in 1874 at Gurun and came with his family to Beyrut (Beirut) Lebanon and then to France around 1925 or 1926.

Haiganoush BOZIKIAN (or other spellings), his wife, was born in 1884 at Gurun and died in France in 1964. Other spellings for BOZIKIAN are BOZIGIAN, BOZEKIAN, BOZEGIAN, BOSEKIAN, BOSEGIAN, BOSIGIAN and BOSIKIAN. They probably married in 1902. Zarig and Marta DERSARKISSIAN came to the USA around 1918. Hovsep BOZIKIAN, probably born around 1915, came to the USA around 1926 and then went to Mexico. The sisters of Haiganoush came to the USA (in Providence, Rhode Island) and then, Gagik her brother went to the USA also. He had a son: Sarkis. The parent of Haiganoush were Krikor BOZIKIAN (he died in France around 1925) and Marinee ZAROUKIAN (or other spellings including ZAROUKIAN or ZAROUGIAN). She died in the USA around 1935 or 1936. I will appreciate any others informations about these people, or patronyms and places, and will be happy to share my records. Thank you.

EDMONDSON, Mrs. Stephanie P.
eMail Address: WMLS78A@prodigy.com

Question: I am searching my Armenian background. My great-grandfather, Charles MIKIELIAN (possibly spelled several ways) once lived in Ismir, Turkey and possibly Istanbul. He came to America in 1915 and settled in Boston.

My question is how do I go about searching my family tree with only knowing this small bit. As far as I know no other family came here. I am assuming most stayed in Turkey and/or Armenia. I have also been told that there are several ways to spell his last name. I am just so curious to find out any information I can. Any help would be most appreciated.

Answer:Regarding your search for information about your great grandfather, Charles MIKIELIAN (or other spelling):

1. See pages 35 thru 44 in the book Genealogy for Armenians (GFA) for a list of microfilm rolls containing genealogical data from Turkey including Istanbul. Rolls of said film are available on loan for a small cost from the "Family History Library" (FHL) of Salt Lake City. They can be requested and viewed at any of the several thousand Family History Centers (FHC) worldwide.

2. See page 48 of GFA for the address of Linda Avakian, A.G. who wrote the book, Armenian Immigrants-Boston 1891-1901, New York 1880-1897. She is an Accredited Genealogist A.G. New England states (Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Rhode Island) specializing in Armenian records. She can advise you about where to find Armenian ship passenger information for 1915.

3. Search the 1920 U.S. Census with emphasis on Massachusetts for your great grandfather, and his wife, whose name and place may help you find him.

4. See chapter 3 of GFA -- "The Basics of Armenian Family Research".

5. See chapter 8 of GFA for "Summary of Records and Services in the U.S"

6. Go to your nearest FHC (Family History Center) for a computer search of your great-grandfather or great-grandmother by name in the CD-ROM Family Search records collection (The FHLC (Catalog), the AF (Ancestral File) and the IGI (International Genealogical Index).

7. Search for any relatives who share your great grandfather. Dig into their memories for leads to possible events and places such as citizenship, obituaries, military, wills, deeds, taxes, probates.

Good luck!

eMail address: dbichara@flashnet.it

I am trying to find out whether my family is from Armenian origin. My grandfather, Pierre MIRJAN was born in Izmir, Turkey, in the early years of this century. He emigrated to Marseilles, France in or about 1922. He was the son of Oscar Mirjan (whose name appears as MIRZAN, a different spelling on a 1903 marriage certificate from the Curia Izmir, Sanctae Mariae) and Bianca CASTELLI. They were related to several families from Smyrna, inter alia, the DAUMAS, MICRIDICH, and STAMBOLIANI. I will be grateful for any information either on my family or on how best to proceed about the search.

KAZ, Lisa
eMail address: LKaz@aol.com

I am looking for information on Garabed KAZANJIAN and his family. His son Bedros (Peter) Kazanjian, born ?, he died somewhere around 1896. On my grandfather's marriage license he lists his mother's name as Marion GUCHIGIAN but I have no dates on her either. My grandfather Levon (Leon) Kazanjian was born 22 February 1889 at Arabkir. He came to the USA sometime between 1900-1915. He married in the USA on 10 August 1926 to Siran SUNI (spelled SUNY in the USA). Levon (Leon) Kazanjian died 6 January 1982.

MARAVANE, Jenna RENJILIAN
eMail address: Maravane@aol.com

My name is Jenna and I know that I am Armenian - there is a RENJILIAN line in my family and we still keep a lot of our history. I'd like to know exactly where my family was from, what happened to some of them during the Armenian holocaust at the turn of the century, and why my grandparents and great aunt keep talking about being nobility. I know my great great grandfather was executed by Turks, and I know my great grandfather, Mihran, became a freedom fighter before coming to America and founding an Armenian church in Troy, NY. Unfortunately, I don't know much else and any help would be greatly appreciated.

MARTIN, Katherine

Please contact me if you have information about the following people: Kahadier / Kachotoor / Kachadoor MIRAKIAN and his wife Komar / Hooma / Marion had at least two sons: Peter P. MIRAKIAN born about 1881 at Mazgort or Harput, Armenia / Turkey and John MIRAKIAN born about 1887. Peter P. MIRAKIAN was born in a rural area. Do you know where Mazgort is? If so, what records are available for this area?

Peter and John MIRAKIAN lived in Worcester, Mass. Peter P.'s wife Teresa WHITWORTH thought that he may have been in the military at some point because he walked very erectly and swiftly. Is this possible? John MIRAKIAN married Heranoosh KANADANIAN (born 1898, Armenia). Her parents are Yervant KANADANIAN and Agavni HOVEVIAN.
Webmaster's Note: No FHL microfilm exists for either of your stated locations. It is often best to start with the records available here. As you may be awrae, Turkey has not yet agreed to permit microfilming of any records there. At the moment only the country of Armenia (former Soviet/Russian Armenia) is being microfilmed.

MELIKYAN, Tatevik
eMail address: tmelikia1@hotmail.com

My name is Tatevik Melikyan. I am from Yerevan, Armenia. My father's name is Hrachia MELIKYAN, and his father's name is Arsen Melikyan (actually the real last name is MELIK-SETRAKYAN). His father came to Armenia after the genocide (from Arjesh). We know that we have some relatives in the US. During the Soviet times, my father's aunt received a letter from them, but she was so scared that she never showed it to anyone, and after she died, no one found it. I wonder if it is possible to trace the roots with this limited information, and find these people. Thank you!

I have a geneological question. My last name is Minassian and my great-grand-father's name was Dadikozian MINASSIAN on my father's side. He was born at Istanbul, Turkey in 1895. He married (first name unknown) KHATCHADURIAN. Any input would be appreciated.

NALBANDIAN, Mary
eMail address: M-Nal@csu.edu

We are trying to find information about my father, Dickran NALBANDIAN, who we think immigrated to the United States in 1913. We think he was born circa 1888-90. He became a citizen after serving in World War I. His nephew Satrag NALBANDIAN arrived in the U.S. about six months before my father. We have been looking at passenger lists of ships arriving in New York, but now think he may have come into New Jersey. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

TOUTOUNTZIAN, Anastasios Artin
eMail address: bpap@intranet.gr

My family name is TOUTOUNTZIAN. My grandfather was called Serko. He came to Greece around 1915 and died in 1971. I know he had relatives who fled to Romania, France and Argentina but I have no connection to any of them. He owned a tabacco farm, I think in the vicinity of Afion. As far as I know I am the only Toutountzian in Greece or anywhere else. There must be others but how can I look them up? I speak no Armenian, am 32 years old, married, one daughter, an electronics engineer. I work and live at Athens Greece. Thank you for any help.

I am researching Aram GAZARIAN, born 21 December 1887-1888 at Kharpert Armenia, migrated to Karse, Russia 1912-1913, then to Lynn, Massachusetts about 1917. His surname may have been changed somewhere in transit. He then migrated to Fresno, California in 1918-19 and married Zara GIRAZIAN. She was born at Lynn, Massachusetts 5 November 1898. They were married at Fresno, California on 24 December 1919. Any information on them and their ancestors would be appreciated.

I am trying to find out anything I can about my family history. Unfortunately I don't have much to go on. I do know some names of grandparents and great aunts-uncles who were born in Armenia. Vartoohi KOCHAKIAN and Vartan KOCHAKIAN. Anything would be greatly appreciated, as I don't have any living ancestors that I know of.

WILLIAMS, David

(Armenian Orthodox)

I am researching the INDJIDJIAN family name. My grandfathers name was Harritoun INDJIDJIAN. They owned a department store at San Stefano or Yesilkoy Turkey. My grandfather's father was Garabet INDJIDJIAN and his wifes name was Elmas. Harritoun Indjidjian married Nevrick PORTEKALIAN. They were a very well off family at Istanbul. My grandfather was summoned to the Sultan and afterward died of a heart attack. He was only in his forties. It has been said that my grandparents were buried at Bakirkoy, Turkey. Harritoun and Nevrick had 5 children. Araxie married Edward PAPAZIAN and immigrated to Manchester, England. Eugene married Popkin CAPREILIAN and immigrated to Crockett Texas. Isabell died. Vahe moved to Russia and married a Russian and had one daughter Aghnavi. Nourhan, my dad, moved to Crockett, Texas about 1928. Nevrick Indjidjian died around 1923-1927 or 1928. The Indjidjian's I think are buried at Bakirkoy. Can you find any records at Istanbul? Yesilkoy? Bakirkoy? They were Aremenian Orthodox I guess however I think my dad went to a private French School or Catholic school. Family members went to France. Their last name was HOSVARIAN. I found a cousin in Armenia. But mostly I never ran into any other Indjidjian however I found this name in the internet in France.
