ALLER, Christine
eMail address: c_aller@geocities.com

I am researching my husband's family: ALLER and SAARMAN. Ernest ALLER was born in Estonia 16 April 1892. Alide SAARMAN was born in Estonia 22 November 1897. Alide had a brother Paul SAARMAN. Supposedly all three emigrated to the USA together. I would like to know where in Estonia they came from, who their parents were, any other siblings, etc. Is anyone else researching these lines??? Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Webmaster's Note: You might check the four citations for ALLER in the surname search section of the FHL (Family History Library) Catalog. SAARMAN appears ethnic Estonian or Baltic while ALLER appears to be Germanic. There were many ethnic Germans there before the end of WW II, thus you may be dealing with a multi-ethnic marriage. This in turn might call for searching Germanic Baltic sources for your ALLER line. Two citations in the FHL Catalog regarding German-Baltic family genealogy might help: 1) the Eric Seuberlich collection (12 reels) with an Zettelkatalog (a form of index) on FHL microfilm #1855075, item 4. and 2) a brief Stammtafeln Deutsch-baltischer Geschechter on the lineal descent of German Baltic families (one reel #0491157).

When did they emigrate? U.S. Census records should reveal or infer an emigration year. The Hamburg Passenger List records would be one source to check when you have an approximate or estimated year, and might give a clue as to their location in Estonia. There is an absence of FHL microfilm to help you regarding Saarman. There is an Estonian genealogist living in Fort Wayne Indiana who has a book on Estonian genealogy - we will post something on it as soon as it is obtained.

GENDRON, Louis
eMail address: ELPEGE@aol.com

I am looking for the name of the spouses of 1) Alexandr von STAAL, born at St. Petersburg circa 1910, and his sister 2) Assia von STAAL, born same place around the same date. They emigrated from Russia to Estonia with their parents, Nicholas von STAAL and Vera BROUTH, at the time of the 1917 Russian revolution. They were probably married at Tallinn, where Nicholas was in politics, in the thirties. Assia and her husband had a daughter (I would be also happy to know her name and birth date). Both Assia and Alexandr died tragically after the takeover of Estonia by the Soviets in 1940, as well as their husband, and the little girl.

HAUMANN, Herta
Ludwig-Braun-Str. 45, 36252 Bad Hersfeld, Germany
eMail address: Herta.Haumann@mail.regio.net

(Catholic?)

I am researching my husband's German-Baltic family to find a birth-certificate of him or any other sign or document, that my husband was existed before 1950 when he came as a prisoner of war from UDSSR. Herbert Edward HAUMANN born 13 September 1922 at Reval (Tallin), kath., died 3 September 1987.

Vater: Eduard HAUMANN, Dipl. agr., born 7 April 1896 at Reval, son of Belarus Officer Paul HAUMANN (born 1855 - died 1938 at Reval). Father Eduard married in March 1920 Minni, maiden-name BAKER, from Sheffield, Gret Britain. He studied in England and came back to Estonia in 1920 and had a management as landowner's steward in Mahtra?, Majorik? - that must be 10 or 12 hours to go off with a carriage to Reval. In Reval they had an appartement or house. The great-great-grandfather of Eduard was born at Riga in 1790. Herbert HAUMANN'S parents and Sister were arrested 15 May 1940 at Reval from GPU - no more sign of them. They had German Nationality.

HEISLERS, Arnis
eMail address: arnis@melbpc.org.au

(Lutheran)

I am researching the following Estonian ancestors and family members and would be grateful for any information: Peter HÄUSLER (HAEUSLER / HAUSLER), born 19 June 1836 at Laatre, son of Andres. His grandfather (or perhaps great grandfather) who came from Hannover, Germany ran a flour mill in South East Estonia and had three sons. I am interested in any information on Peter's ancestors and any brothers or sisters. EPRO, Anna, born 23 December 1840 at Poltsamaa (Oberpahlen). She married Peter HÄUSLER (HAEUSLER / HAUSLER) on 24 May 1864 at Sangaste. I am interested in her ancestors, and any brothers or sisters.

Johann Jakob JANTSON, born 13 March 1852 at Torgel, was the son of Jaan JAHNSON and Liisa MITTT. He married Lissa JÜRWETSON (JUERWETSON / JURWETSON). I am interested in ancestral information and on the following of his ten children and their descendants: Johan JANTSON - sailor, lived mostly at Tallinn; two marriages; went to Riga in 1930's and married Eda VARES; he died at Riga in 1943. Heinrich JANTSON, a baker at Tallinn and east; he died at Rakvere. Karl JANTSON lived at Pärnu / Paernu / Parnu and died approx. 1940; had son Axel JANTSON (TANNER). Woldemar JANTSON - married Amalie ??; son Barni JANTSON died in Karpaten Mts. Marta JANTSON - died 1944 Liepaja, Latvia; married Hans KARU; children Elmar KARRO (died 1946/47), Mary KARRO (died 1989 Ratzeburg), Marta KARRO (died UK) who married Wollie KÄSK (KAESK / KASK) in Riga and had a daughter Mary KÄSK (married ASHWELL and had son Igor). Nicolas JANTSON - died 1972; married and had three children: Hella (born at Tallinn 1939, living at Saarema Island and has a son Timo), Peter (born at Tallinn, three daughters in Tallinn), and Toomas (born at Tallinn, 2 daughters in Tallinn). Liisa JÜRWETSON (JUERWETSON / JURWETSON) was the daughter of Johan JÜRWETSON and Liisa ?, born 21 October 1885 at Torgel, died 1916 in Pärnu; wife of Johan Jakob JANTSON.

JONES, David K.

(Lutheran)

I am trying to locate the village where my G Grandfather August STROEDE was born at Halnor, Russia in 1865. He came to America in the spring of 1882. He stayed at Schweiz, Germany on his way to Hamburg. I have ran the town of Halnor thru the Jewish Gen Shtetl Seeker. It came up with 40 matches. Knowing he stayed in Schweiz I am working the area east of there. He was of Lutheran faith. The results of Shtetl search are: Kalmaru, Estonia; Kalnaraji, Latvia; Khalamer'ye and Kholomer'ye Belrus, Russia border. His father was Carl or Karl. Any help on this will be greatly appreciated.
Webmaster's Note: We have provisionally placed your entry here. There is a list of excellent Estonian and Latvian gazeetteers on this website but that is not your problem. At the moment I do not see an FHL Catalog listing for microfilm, fiche or books referring to that location, where ever it is - that is the problem - no vital records for that location yet.

KULLER, Kalju Karl
eMail address: kkkuller@gate.net

(Lutheran)

I search for Andrew KULLER's roots, which probably go back to the Hanseatic Germans who largely populated Pä rnumaa (Paernumaa / Parnumaa), Estonia. Andrew KULLER presumably was born in, or around, the City of Pärnu (Paernu / Parnu) and had a son, Theodor KULLER in 1892, who married Sinaida SUTT in Pärnu, who gave birth to Leonida, Johann, Aino, and Kalju. They emigrated to the U.S.A. about 1928. I also would like to know if there are any KULLER or SUTT family members still in Estonia who night be related.

LAMP, Jerry
eMail address: bellemel@djam.com

(Lutheran / Russian Orthodox?)

I am looking for information about my grandfather Julius LAMP born 24 February 1868 near Tartu. He was the son of Hans Asmus LAMP (born 2 or 3 January 1840) and Christina LAMP. Juluis LAMP emigrated to the U.S. in late 1888 and was followd by 8 of his siblings. One sister, Rebecca LOEKE, remained in Dorpat (Tartu). He was a butcher in Estonia.

My great-grandfather Hans Asmus LAMP worked on or managed a farm or ranch possibly in the Kambja paish of Livland district. Possibly the manor Vana Prangli. He emigrated to the U.S. in 1890. The LAMP family spoke German and carried out German traditions. The were Lutheran although may have been Orthodox at some point. I'm trying to trace the family back to Germany and also get an idea of their life in Estonia and the possible reasons for their emigration to the U.S.

LEINASSAR, Ronald
eMail address: RJLEIN@worldnet.att.net

(Protestant)

I am trying to find some information on my grandfather Michael LEINASSAR. He was born at Parnu Estonia 23 September 1880. My great grandfather's name was Martin LEINASSAR and great grandmother's maiden name was Annie TALTS. Any suggestions on where to look for vital records from Parnu? I would also be interested in obtaining a copy of my grandparents marriage license. I believe they were married in New York but am unsure of the year, do not know the county or the church, I'm guessing they were protestant. I know this info is pretty thin to do a search, any suggestions? I'm pretty sure I need to start looking overseas but I don't know where to start. Thank you.

LOIKOW, Ann
eMail address: johnl@erols.com

(Lutheran)

I am searching for information on the family of Johann Ferdinand LOIKOW who was born 12 May 1880 at Reval (now Tallinn, Estonia) and married Cecilie Margarethe ROOS (date unkown). Cecilie was born on 31 October 1883, baptised 19 March 1901 and died in 1911 at New York City, New York, USA.

His father was Jaan Jannsohn LOIKOW, born at Rouma Vallas 13 June 1839 and died atn Tallinn 15 September 1903. His mother was Maria von DREIER JANOW LOIKOW, who was born at Paide Liinnas on 19 October 1838 and died at Tallinn 15 June 1906. Johann Ferdinand LOIKOW emigrated to the United States in 1907. He had three sisters, Asta, Erna and Agnes LOIKOW who were living in Tallinn as late as 1918 when Johann Ferdinand LOIKOW lost all contact with them. Johann Ferdinand LOIKOW was a Lutheran and was a master machinist who worked for Steinway & Sons in New York City after he emigrated to the United States. He died 25 March 1952 at Fort Belvoir, VA, USA. I would like to find out if descendents of any of the three sisters are still living in Estonia and if any one has any other information on the LOIKOW or JANOW or ROOS families.

LOKK, Vahur
Äripäev (Aeripaeev / Aripaev), Estonia
eMail address: vahurl@mbp.ee

I am looking for ancestry of Maria von HARTEN. This lady died in the Estonian town Viljandi in early 1970's (age probably about 90). There is some probability, that she came to Estonia only after the Russian Revolution (1918-1919). She was never married, hence she was born von HARTEN. In her Soviet passport entry for nationality had been "Russian", but that was customary for Jews, Germans etc. in these times.

NEEM, Sharon

I am researching the following Estonian families: Mihkel TREILOP, born Sindi, Estonia circa 1860-1865; and his wife Liisa, born Estonia. Children: Iuuli TREILOP, born 3 April 1888, died circa 1947; Mari TREILOP who married a Mr. KUUDER; Juri; and Aleksanter TREILOP. Iuuli TREILOP married Jaan VELT, born 3 June 1886 Sindi, Estonia, died circa 1948. Child: Leida Alice VELT, born 2 April 1916. Jann VELT's parents were: Hans VELT, born Poltsama, Vilandi, Estonia, married Maria. This is all I know of these TREILOP and VELT families, and I would be interested in learning more. Leida Alice VELT is my mother-in-law. Do you have any suggestions on researching these families? Thank you for any help.

I am also researching the following families: Juhan NIKOLAI, born circa 1885-90 in Estonia, died 1918, married Maria OTTMAN. Children (all born Parnu, Estonia): Johannes NIKOLAI, born circa 1905, died 1918; Klarisa NIKOLAI, born circa 1907, died 1918; and Arseni NIKOLAI, born 19 October 1911, died 20 November 1996. Juhan, Johannes, and Klarisa all died during the 1918 flu epidemic. Arseni was my father-in-law. During Estonian Independence, 1918-1940, everyone wanted an Estonian-sounding surname, so at that time Arseni changed his surname from NIKOLAI to NEEM. Can you help me discover the parents and siblings of Juhan NIKOLAI and Maria OTTMAN? Thank you.
Webmaster's Note: OTTMAN has Scandanavian origins, VELT is Dutch, KUUDER / KUDER is Germanic (see it in the FHL Catalog), TREILOP likely is Estonian and NIKOLAI seems Germanic or Russian. As for locations, there is FHL microfilm (3 reels) of Lutheran churchbook records for Sindi (1875-1940). Be prepared to deal with German until about 1892, then Russian until 1917 and Estonian from 1918 on. The are also churchbook and citizen register records from Parnu (1615-1787) and churchbook records from Poltsamaa, Estonia. You can evaluate your priorities for information and plan your search using the FHL catalog summaries.

I am looking for relatives of Karl PUKK, son of Samuel PUKK, born 1923, living in Antsla region. Lutherian religion. Karl emigrated to Canada in the 1950s.
Webmaster's Note: Too bad you have no knowledge of the marriage or death place, date or year or the spouses' name and vital dates or the possible siblings of for Samuel or Karl. You greatly diminish the chances of success on this WWW EERL by such a brief posting.

OGDEN, Sandra
Blackstock, Ontario, Canada
eMail address: okokay@sympatico.ca

I am researching my cousin's husband and his family who are all from Estonia. The information I have at this time is: Erich RAAMAT was born at Saaremaa about 1920's. His father's name was Samuel. His mother's name HAKKMAN-MUST, Emilje. Hilse KAAR was born at Tallinn about 1920's - Father's name Peeter, Mother's name VENDELIN, Linds. Grandparents: KAAR, Andrus and MEIER, Tiina also VENDELIN, Juhan and PEARSON, Marie. I am hoping to have more information soon, more dates hopefully. I am just wondering if anyone out there recognizes these names.
Webmaster's Note: While no church records or civil records appear for Saaremaa in the Salt Lake City FHL Catalog, there are 7 topics and 13 record collections. You might be able to find something of value from the land/property and taxation topics for the Raamat family. For Tallinn, see the Note under Wentzel below.

PAUNIC, Peter N.
eMail address: pnpaunic@yahoo.com

(Lutheran)

I am interested in pursuing my family's geneology. My grandfather's name was Jaan MUST. He was born in Russia near the Estonian border in the late 1800's. His wife's name was Anna (don't know her maiden name or town of birth). Both were Estonian. To my knowledge, Jaan and Anna MUST had 3 daughters - Leida (my mother, born 15 June 1924 at Viljandi), Linda, and Helmi (or Helgi). Helmi / Helgi died in infancy and Linda passed away when she was 16 years of age. I believe that Anna MUST brought a son, from a previous marriage, into her marriage with JAAN. His name was Oskar NURK, and disappeared approx. 1934 - ostensibly to enlist in the French Foreign Legion. He served a 5 year tour at Algiers, and apparently re-enlisted for at least another 5 year tour. His last know whereabouts was Sidi bel Abbes. The MUST family worked on an estate just ouside of Viljandi, Estonia. All children were born in that parish and were christened in the Lutheran Church. Leida MUST fled Viljandi in 1944, as the Soviet onslaught drew nearer to Estonai. She left her mother and father (Jaan and Anna), as well as an aunt (Alviine SALU). Alviine SALU was married to Paul SALU, who worked as a conductor for the railway. Paul was subsequently executed by the Soviets.

I have tried to trace my family's history (at least, on my mother's side) but have not had much luck. Numerous records were either confiscated or destroyed by the Soviets, and I haven't been able to locate many close relatives who could be of much help. I would appreciate any suggestions as to how I could attempt to trace my family's genealogy. Thanks.

ROGERS, Cory
eMail address: Pelagica@aol.com

(Lutheran)

I am looking for information on the name VALLASTE. My mother's birth name was Aide VALLASTE, of Lutheran religion. She was born at Rakvere 23 October 1924. My father tells me her mother's parents were Johann and Lisa KRUPP. As far as I know, my mother had to leave Estonia for Germany in 1944. My mother had a sister named Elen (married name unknown). Elen had a daughter named Melanie who may be about 50 yrs old now. On a site listing Estonian political prisoners 1940-1988 I found the name Hermann Juri VALLASTE. The list gave his birth date as 12 November 1898 and his arrest date 25 May 1945. Because this seems to be an unusual surname I thought I would try to find a connection. I don't know how to go any further with this inquiry.

ROMANILLOS, Ana M
eMail address: anar@the-cia.net

(Lutheran)

I am researching the YOURIEFF-RIGA family. Maria Julia YURIEFF-RIGA, daughter of August YURIEFF and Julia RIGA, all of Wesenberg. Maria Julia was born in 1887 and married a Spanish citizen, Benito PEREZ MENENDEZ between 1905-1907. She died in Paris in 1957 ? She was Lutheran and had a twin brother. How do I find out their names after Independence, when most surnames were "Estonicized"? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

RUDISILL, Kimberly
eMail address: tsamiam@erols.com

I am searching for any informationon George PAJU. The only things I know about him are: He is listed as Father on my mothers birth certificate from 14 May 1944 at Camden New Jersey. His place of birth is listed as Estonia. I have an old picture of him taken at Glen Echo Park, Maryland in 1943 and I think he served in the US Military at some point. I need any info you can provide. Finding out someone is your granfather when you're 32 years old kinda freaks you out. Please help.

eMail address: NiceShot2@aol.com

(Lutheran)

I am trying to find any information I can regarding the family of my father, Johann TEDER (he anglicized it to John TEDDER when he came to the U.S. in 1948). His father was Ilmar Michael TEDER and his mother was Gertrude. Ilmar may have had a brother named Teodor who moved to Canada. My father was born at Haapsalu March 1930 and was Lutheran. His father and ancestors for several generations were music teachers and church organists. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

TENNOW, Daniel E.
3215 Charing Cross Road, Ann Arbor, Michigan 48108- USA
FAX 734-973-0950
eMail address: Dtennow@aol.com

(Lutheran?)

I am beginning to search for records of my family from Estonia. My father was Daniel Edgar TENNOV who was born at St. Petersburg, Russia, in 1892 or 1893. He emigrated to the United States around October 1912 from Liverpool. The spelling of the name was changed to TENNOW after his arrival in the U.S. His family lived at Narva, Estonia and some extended family members probably lived in Tallin. He is believed to have had a sister named Anna and that may also have been his mother's name. His father's name was probably also Daniel Edgar, since my father used the suffix "Jr." later on. The family religion was probably Lutheran although that is not certain. In the United States he lived at Brooklyn, New York and was drafted into the U.S. Army during World War I and served as a Musician 2nd Class with the Regimental Band, 106th Infantry, 77th Division. He played french horn and clarinet. Following the war he returned to New York and was a mens' tailor and clothier. He died July 1939 at Brooklyn, New York and at the time of his death was a teacher of mens' tailoring in the Central High School of Needle Trades, New York City. I appreciate any assistance you may give me in this search.

TOOMRE, Anya
eMail address: Atoomre@aol.com

(Lutheran)

I'm looking for information on my Estonian family. My grandfather (Elmar - 1904-1990) and his brother (Richard 1907-1993, who married Leida STEINFELD, 1911-1974) changed their family name from TOMSON to TOOMRE during the two world wars. They had a sister, Armilda TOOMRE (1910-1976) who married Meinhard LAURMAA (1905-?).

Their parents from Tartu, Estonia, were Juhan TOMSON (1871- 1954) and Liine HERMANN (1879-1973). My grandmother Linda AGHEN was born at St. Petersburg in 1911, daughter of Aleksander Ferdinand AGHEN (1882-1959, born at Parnu, Estonia) and Julie DORING (1875-1959), daughter of Juri DORING and Katarina (1848-1922). Her family is primarily from the Harju region in Estonia. I believe the family were Lutheran. I was hoping to find some more information about other relatives, or ideas of where to search next. Thanks.

USTINA, Judy
eMail address: drjku@telusplanet.net

My grandmother, Julie HIIE born 8 June 1898 at Haapsalu, Estonia emigrated to Canada in 1927. Both her parents had passed away before she left Estonia (father: Reinhold HIIE born 5 May 1859, died 10 January 1927; mother: Miina HIIE, born 20 August 1861, died 7 October 1918). She had 3 older sisters, Minni, Annie and Helli, two of whom died in the seige of Leningrad. One (possibly Minnie) lived until approximately 1957 when she died at Haapsalu. I would like to know if anyone has any information about any of these three sisters and I would also like to know if Reinhold HIIE or Miina HIIE had any brothers or sisters that would have continued on the family name. In otherwords did my grandmother have any relatives? Thank-you

VALVAS, Are

WENZEL, Jon David
5487 Gunther Road, Mariposa, California 95338-9727

I am a second generation American of Estonian descent. My ancestry comes from Reval, now Tallinn, Estonia. Can you help me find information on my WENZEL family for my genealogy? I have additional information I will share with anyone able to help me.

Webmaster's Note: FEEFHS as a federation does not do genealogy for others but we are glad to offer suggestions. You did not offer a full name of your father, his religion or his vital dates, so we cannot offer you specific suggestions for doing your own genealogy. But we do suggest you visit your nearest Family History Center soon.

There you will find there in the Family History Library Catalog (FHLC) 21 genealogy "topics" listed for microfilm, fiche and book collections listed under Reval/Tallinn. They include 16 "Church record" collections. Under "Genealogy" there are two books in German (one on microfilm) on the early families of Reval. Under "Census" there are 6 microfilm collections in German and Russian spanning several census projects (1689-1888). Under "Jewish Records" there is a microfilm covering vital dates from 1872 to 1940. Should your surname go back that far in Estonia, there is a 329 page book on Riga and Reval family names in the 14th and 15th centuries by Liselotte Feyerabend.
