This is the web site index for the listing of Banat surnames from abstracted from the
North Dakota
Federal Census of Stark, Hettinger, Dunn, Mercer, and Morton Counties for 1900 and
1910.
This summary of the data represents all Banaters enumerated in these counties with the
exception of a handful
of young hired men and women working for non-Banater families and women who married
non-Banater men (mostly Germans from Russia).
In 1900 Stark county occupied a large part of Southwestern North Dakota. Between 1900
and 1910 Stark County was partioned to create Hettinger, Dunn, a rump of Stark with a
fragment going to Morton County
North Dakota.
Spelling of the names was checked, so far as was possible, against contemporaneous lists
in:
- "North Dakota Pioneers from the Banat" by J. M. Michels, (Bismarck,
1932) and
- "Kieter's North Dakota Directory of Stark and Dunn Counties,
1910-1911"
The spelling for those surnames followed by a question mark have not been verified from
another source.
Author's Note: I solicit corrections for those names with uncertain spelling.

Data on towns of origin was taken largely from "North Dakota Pioneers from the
Banat" by J. M. Michels. This book is also a useful guide to the townships covered
by the study. (It apparently includes all of the township maps). The initial letter in the place
code indicates the county and is followed by the township and range.
The townships given in the census varies somewhat from those of the township maps in
Michels and those given in Kieter's directory. This must be ascribed to the lack of signposts
on the North Dakota prairies in the 1900 to 1910 period to guide the census
enumerator.

Dakota Please see this letter from David Dreyer to Bob Madler of 2 January
1996 for additional insights into the subject of Banat family research in North
Dakota.
To summarize, the abbreviations for the first column (place) reflect county or town ,
township and range.
Abbreviations for these North Dakota counties include:
- D = Dunn County
- H = Hettinger County
- Me = Mercer County
- M = Morton
- S = Stark County
Examples:
- D142-94 refers to Dunn County, Township 142, Range 94.
