Publications:

  1. Annual Griesbacher Family Newsletter
  2. In process: "German Immigrants from Veszprem County, Hungary"

My interest in Veszprem County stems from my heritage. All four of my grandparents were born there and emigrated to America during the latter years of the 19th century. I have been involved in family history and genealogy for the past 35 years, and I have collected a substantial library of literature pertaining to the villages, towns and the people of the area. Most of the information that I have is written in the German language, which I am able to read; however some is in Hungarian, which I unfortunately cannot read.

Many thousands of Germans left the villages of Veszprem County during the years prior to and after the turn of the century because of very difficult economic conditions there. After WW I there were additional emigrations to America and Canada; and, in 1945-48 there were the "flight" and the "expulsions". Lesser numbers of people departed the region during and after the 1956 rebellion. Although I am unable to determine exact numbers, I estimate that 10,000 to 15,000 or more ethnic German people emigrated from Veszprem County during the period from 1880 to 1965.

My book will be directed to the descendants of these people who probably now number over 100,000 persons. Because of the more or less complete assimilation of these descendants into American culture, with the accompanying changes in way of life, the history of this ethnic minority must be preserved for future generations or it too will be lost. My book will include chapters about village histories, origins of the settlers, agriculture, occupations, architecture, socio-political and ethnic minority problems, customs, cultural aspects, industry, food, genealogy and a list of the immigrants by name.

I have assembled a database of more than 2,000 names of immigrants with associated information available from the marriage records researched to date at the Catholic churches in cities where they congregated. I am continuing to add to this database with research in additional places. Any help with information pertaining to this work will be gratefully appreciated. I would especially like to obtain personal memories of the emigrations experienced by persons actually involved in the Expulsions and the Flight during and after WW II.

    CRAWFORD, TERESA M. FRIEDRICH
    eMail address: EdesTerike@aol.com

    Region: Banat (currently Vojvodina, Serbia)

    Towns:
Karlsdorf (currently Srbski Karlovac; formerly Banatski Karlovac, Karlovo Selo, Temeskarolyfalva, Nagykarolyfalva)
    Alibunar
    Nikolintz
    Wekerle

Surnames: BUCHERT, SCHWARZ, DURAN, FESSNER, SONNLEITNER

Resources: "150 Years of Karlsdorf; History of the Community of Karlsdorf in the Banat; Volume 26 of the Annals of the Danube Swabians" by Hans Volk, Pannonia Press, Freilassing, 1958.

Josef Martin and Katharina (SCHWARZ) BUCHERT emigrated from Karlsdorf with their children in 1922. I am searching for additional information on their ancestors. I am also interested in obtaining copies of the other two books written about Karlsdorf: Ludwig Szmida's "The History of the Community of Karlsdorf" (1902), and Felix Milleker's "History of the Community of Banatski Karlovac" (1934).

My resource, which is in a translated manuscript form, contains only a brief overview of the village's history, and nothing on the origins of the inhabitants. It is very heavy, though, on 1939-1948 history, including the sufferings of the Karlsdorfers after November 1944. It also contains a lot of interesting information on folk customs and local businesses. I am willing to provide exerpts from the manuscript to serious researchers, and will respond to surname requests. A surname index of this book is available on AOL.
