LAFERTON, Franz
eMail address: f_laferton@dchs.demon.co.uk
Names: LAFERTON (alternative spellings: LAFFERTHON, LAFORTUN,
LAFFORTHUEN, LAFFORTHUN) LAFERTON, Anton (Antonius) [my
great-great-great-grandfather]
Earliest documentary evidence: 3 November 1807 Register of
marriages for Zichydorf, Banat: Anton Laferton (batchelor)
married Elisabeth (Elisabetha) Kraus (spinster); Priest: Lucas
Reisch; Witnesses: Martin (Martinus) Kovacs and Johann (Joannes)
Parmantsche
Other documentary evidence: various entries in the register of
baptisms for Karlsdorf/Banatski Karlovac, Banat as godfather:
1822 - 1830
He had three sons:
3 June 1809 Heinrich (Henricus), Zichydorf
7 October 1810 Franz (Franciscus), Zichydorf
20 April 1813 Johann (Joannes), Zichydorf [my
greatgreat-grandfather]
Anton, Franz and Johann later moved to Karlsdorf. My grandfather
and great-grandfather lived in Kubin / Kovin, where my father was
born. There are also branches of the Lafertons (alternative
spellings: Lafferthon, Lafortun, Lafforthuen Lafforthun) from
Homolitz, Banat and Ivanovo, Banat and Hungary proper. The
descendents now live in Germany, USA, Canada, Hungary and Great
Britain. I am interested to hear from any Laferton (whatever the
spelling!). In particular I would welcome help with tracing the
origins of Anton Laferton from Zichydorf.

My

Nicholas
and Elizabeth Ann (CROOK) LAMMESFELDER (m.1907,i Canada) had two
cousins in
North Dakota and that linkage has not been established. The
cousins were Josef
SCHNEIDER and Otto SETTLEMEYER. I am looking for this
connection.
In the New York arrival records of 1905 my grandfather was
traveling with a different wife.
This is the only reference to this woman that I have found.
I would like to find the name of this woman and find out what
happened to her.

My grandmother, Katherine REITER was born in Ujkephenja,
Temesher, Ungarn (Hungary) in 1892. In an obituary for her
brother, Nick, in the paper in 1939, it says he was born in
Neu-Beschenowa, Banat, Rumanien. Would these two places be near
each other? Where are they today? My grandmother came to US in
about 1909 -- from what port do you think she came out of? The
other place I can not find is the birthplace (in 1890) of my
grandfather, Mathias GARTNER, Kerney (Kernei), Batschka,
Yugoslavia.

Family originated in Mondorf les Bains in Luxembourg. Oldest
ancestor of record Framcois LINSTER who
was married to Catherine SCHWAB. Their son Johan Wilhelm married
Margaretha KAYSER (KAISER) and
settled in the village of Fixem, now in France. They had a
daughter Maria born in 1740. They also had sons
Peter and Jacob. Wilhelm and family left for the Banat passing
through Vienna in 1764. He settled in
Hatzfeld. His brother Michael, who was still living in Mondorf
les Bains left Luxembourg to join Wilhelm in
Hatzfeld. He passed through Vienna in 1769. When he arrived in
Hatzfeld he found that Wilhelm died earlier
in the year. Michael died in September of 1769.
Wilhelm's sons Peter and Jakob survived and carried on the family
name. Peter's son Nikolaus is my 5th
generation grandfather. He moved to Klienjetscha after marrying
Maria SCHALJO They had a son Johan
along with other children including Phillip. Johan married
Elisabeth KORY and their youngest child was son
Franz, my great grandfather. Franz marries Barbara ROSTER
(ROSSTER). Their oldest son Mathias, my
grandfather emigrated to the U. S. in 1902 living in
Philadelphia. His father Franz and mother Barbara joined
him later the same year. Both Mathias and Franz were
blacksmiths.
In 1905 Mathias married Elisabeth JUNG of Triebswetter in
Philadelphia. My father John was born in
Philadelphia, PA on July 21, 1906. He has brothers and a sister.
The family took up a homested in
Richardton, North Dakota in 1908. Due to hard times, my
grandfather returned to Philadelphia in 1925. My
father, the oldest, married Catherine BIRO from Grossjetscha. Her
mother Anna was never married and used
her BIRO name. Her grandfather was Johann BIRO and grandmother
Anna METZGER of Grossjetscha. Later,
after the death of Johann, Anna came to the States and died in
Norristown Hospital around 1936. They have
seven children including me born in 1943 and the youngest. I
have little information on BIRO and METZGER.
Searching for KAISER, KAYSER, SCHALJO, KORY, ROSTER, ROSSTER,
JUNG, BIRO and
METZGER.

Interested in the Banat region. My father Peter LUNG was born
there on 6-30-1898.
According to my brother, Dad once pointed out the Banat region in
northern Yugoslavia on a
map. He said the city where he was born no longer existed. He
lived near a river. When
he
was born the area I believe was considered Hungary. His parents
John LUNG and Mary
MITCHELL LUNG were married there. I believe all of their
children were born there. The
siblings are John, Mary, Peter, Nick, and Lena. They immigrated
to Winnepeg Canada
somewhere between 1906 and 1916. I have no dates for John, Nick
or Mary.
Nor do I know of any of their siblings. Would love to know if I
have relatives in the old
country.

SCHEER: My paternal grandmother, Suzanna BINDER (nee
SCHEER), was born in Billed, Hungary on 15 September 1893. She
left the Old World with her parents on the S.S. Carpathia, which
departed from Fiume 26 February 1907. They arrived in New York
16 March 1907 and joined Peter STEINER (her uncle) in Saint
Louis 19 March 1907. She married Anton BINDER in September 1913
at Ss. Peter and Paul Church at Saint Louis, Missouri. She died
26 April 1962 in Saint Louis, MO. She was buried 30 April 1962
in Resurrection Cemetery at Saint Louis, MO.
Her sisters were Katharina and Marianna (sp) SCHEER. Katharina
was born 25 November 1888 at Biled; she died at Saint Louis,
Missouri. Marianna was born 14 September 1890 and died 26 March
1893 in Biled. Her father, Peter SCHEER, was born at Knesz,
Austria-Hungary 5 September 1863. He was a vintner by trade. He
married Katharina STEINER 19 February 19 1889 at Billed. He died
in May 1949 at Saint Louis, Missouri. He was buried May 31, 1949

died in 1949 at Saint Louis, Missouri. She was buried 5 July
1949 at Ss. Peter and Paul Cemetery at Saint Louis, Missouri.
My great-great-grandmother, Barbara STEINER was also listed on
the passenger list for the S.S. Carpathia. Her age was listed as
65 (I'm staggered that a person of her age would undertake this
journey). Her death certificate lists her birth date as 20
February 1840 and her father's name as John GERKEN (variants are
GERGEN and JOERGEN). She died 7 April 1912 at Saint Louis, MO
and was buried 10 April 1912 at Ss. Peter and Paul Cemetery at
Saint Louis, MO.
BINDER: My paternal grandfather, Anton BINDER, was born at
Bega-Szent-Gyorgi, Hungary 24 n December 24, 1891. He arrived at
New York 24 June 1906 on the S.S. Ultonia (Cunard), which
departed from Fiume. He married Suzanna SCHEER September 1913 at
Ss. Peter and Paul Church at St. Louis, MO. Grandpa died July
24, 1956 in St. Louis, Missouri. He was buried 27 July 1956 in
Resurrection Cemetery at Saint Louis, Missouri. His siblings
were Mathias, Anna, Magdalen (Helen), Johann, and Joseph (who was
born in America but died as an infant).
His father, also named Anton BINDER, was born at Bega-Szent-
Gyorgi, Austria-Hungary 26 August 1865. I don't know when he
married. He left the Old World on the S.S. Barbarossa, which
departed from Bremen 2 July 1904. He arrived in New York on July
13, 1904. He died 2 October 1936 at Saint Louis, Missouri. He was
buried 5 October 1936 in Ss. Peter and Paul Cemetery at Saint
Louis, Missouri.
His mother, Anna BINDER (nee SCHULZ), was born in Schonfeld(?),
Austria-Hungary 2 February 1865. She accompanied her five
children to America in 1906. She died 30 December 1936 at Saint
Charles, Missouri. She was buried 2 January 1937 in Ss. Peter
and Paul Cemetery at Saint Louis, Missouri.
In the FOKO database, there is listed a Barbara BINDER / PINTER
from Bega-Szent-Gyorgi, Torontal Country. This is my ancestral
village. I have finished reviewing FHC microfilm #1190307 for
Kathreinfeld / Katalinafalva, the nearest parish, and I found
only one BINDER but at Kis-Torok, a neighboring village. I did
find entries for Joannes PINTER from Bega-Szent-Gyorgi in
reference to baptisms of his children or godchildren.

I don't have any ancestors from the area, but Yugoslavia has been
my scholarly interest for
years. Well, it was until everything blew up.
I know all the languages of the area (not Hungarian), having a
PhD in Slavic languages, and
am currently working as a librarian at the Hoover Institution
Library on the Stanford
University campus. I mention this because I have access to a lot
of printed material,
especially gazetteers, which might be of help to researchers. I
am willing to look things up,
especially place names, and to help however I can. I know that
many researchers do not
have
the linguistic background or resources that are at my disposal,
and so I offer to help.

SORGENT. They immigrated in about 1906 to Mayville, Wi..Peter had
made at least two
trips to the USA before he decided on Wisconsin.
He did not come because of any type of persecution, but simply
because he loved to hunt and
fish and in Yugoslavia it wasn't as free as in early Wisconsin.
The SORGEND family still
survives in Germany, but I don't believe any are left in Apatin.
I have most of the history
of
the people here in the USA and have some addresses of the people
in Germany.
