In the 60s my father, Wendell P. KUNDERMANN, wrote about the life of his
family in Varoslod, (Vesprem county) Hungary, living a while in Sao Paula,
Brazil, back to Varoslod, then to Akron, Ohio and later to St. Louis,
Missouri, where he married and had me as an only
child. We made these several pages into an illustrated booklet, and that is
probably what gave me the genealogy virus. He corresponded regularly with
his cousin in Hungary and visited her a number of times, the last being in
1979 when I went along.
There I met a number of relatives and continued frequent written contact
with a distant cousin who spoke and wrote English. His letters were
surprisingly candid and profound and thorough. He was very knowledgeable about
life in Hungary historically and after 1979, including the influence of the
communists, events leading to the changes in government and the ongoing
transition, with its many facets. I have since visited him twice, the last
time being in July, 1994. He died in Dec., 1995, and I greatly mourn him as
a person and as an aid in knowing about life in Hungary.
In addition, my son living in Germany (for 20+ years) and I have done some
supplementary things in genealogical research.
In 1992-3 we hired Sigmital / Magyar-Olasz Kft. / Budapest, Hungary to
research the family (Sigma Famila Ltd.). They sent copies of the appropriate
records, church and civil. I have found at least one or two of them in
FHC microfilm also.
For general historical background my son and I have accumulated a large number
of books about the history of Germany, the Austrian-Hungarian Empire, and
Hungary. Many of these were purchased on our visits there. In 1994 I went to Hungary
(also
Warsaw and Prague) on an Elderhostel. Among the places we went was an outdoor
historical
museum reproducing the life in many areas and time periods in Hungary. I particularly like
the
explanatory booklet from there. Also, we went to the Ethnographic Museum in Budapest,
and I
greatly enjoyed videotaping things there as well. I also take many, many slide photos on
trips.
OK-now for some exact names and dates: Although my son and I have traced many, many
family
roots from Germany as far back as the 1400s I will only include the Germans to Hungary. If
you are
interested any of the others, let me know. Some are from southern Germany, others from
further
north.

STROTMAN, TERRI B.
eMail address: pstrotman@earthlink.net
BISCHOF, BREYER, GEIST, HUNSDORFER / HUNFALVY, LESCH, SCHARF,
WEBER
Phillip SCHARF married Elisabetha WEBER in Tscherwenka, (Czervenka) in the Batschka
region of
what became Yugoslavia. He died circa 1895-96. She died in 1926. Both in this town.
Their
children were:
- Christina b. 14 Dec 1885 (my husband's grandmother)
- Katherine
- Karl
- Henry
- Phillip
- Adam
- Rose
These are the names as I was provided by one of my mother-in-law's cousins.
Philip SCHARF, Sr. was a tailor. He was killed in a threshing machine
accident. Karl SCHARF died of gassing in WW I. He had a daughter Eleanor who
married Peter SCHMIDT and lived in Göppingen / Goeppingen, Germany. Phillip Jr.
married a woman named Sophie. Rose SCHARF married a Nicholas LESCH who was
from Banat. They lived in Benton Harbor, Michigan.
I'm also interested in the surname: GEIST and the surname: BISCHOF. Karl BISCHOF
married the daughter of Christina SCHARF, Katherine, here in the U.S., but he was also
from
near Tscherwenka; he is believed to be from Werbass. He died when his children were
young and their mother never talked much about her hometown or relatives.
I am also looking for information about the HUNSDORFER and/or BREYER
families. My husband's grandfather was Samuel HUNSDORFER, b. 1 Mar 1886 in
what was then Neuwaldorf, Austria-Hungary, and is now called Nova Lesna,
Spis County, Slovakia. ( I think) His father's name was Johann HUNSDORFER.
His mother's name was Maria Susana BREYER. (d. 1903, Neuwaldorf.)
Samuel emigrated to the United States in 1902.
The surname, HUNSDORFER, was also spelled HUNFALVY. I believe there was at
least one well-know academic by that name in the mid-1800s.
Samuel had two brothers, one who died as an infant and one who died in WW II;
and one sister who was expatriated to what became East Germany post WW II.
We have been told that these families were in this town in the
Tatra / Carpathian Mts. for several generations. This was a German settlement
until after World War II. There was a mountain named Hunsdorfer Spitze, near
Lomnitzer Spitze, according to a hiking book written in German in the 1880's.
The men in the family were well - known for their skill as hiking guides.
The town was near a place called "Stary Smokovec". The largest town nearby
was Poprad.
I'd appreciate any information that would add to what I have (all of which is
included here) or would direct me to useful sources here in the U.S.
STROUD, VERONICA BEINSTINGEL
eMail address: strd@alaska.net
Surnames: BEINSTINGEL, BARDON, HARFMAN, BLUM
Locations: Backa Palanka; Nijemci, Yugoslavia; Vienna, Austria; Passau, Germany and
USA.
I am currently trying to locate any and all information on the BEINSTINGEL surname.
Following is a brief on what I know to date and a list of associated surnames and locations.
My father; Carl BEINSTINGEL born 25 June 1938 Nijemci, Yugoslavia; came to the USA
with his parents Josef BEINSTINGEL (born 20 August 1909 Nijemci, Yugoslavia, married
in Nijemci, died Burlington, New Jersey) and Magdalena HARFMAN BEINSTINGEL (born
8 February 1909 Yugoslavia, died 4 April 1994 Burlington, New Jersey) on 17 November
1951 via Hamburg, Germany. They settled in Burlington, New Jersey at 10 Center Avenue
where they built a Homestead.
My father is the youngest of 3 children and the only son. Eva BEINSTINGEL Wallenta is
the eldest and Anna BEINSTINGEL Nigl is the middle child. The information that I have at
this point is all handed down from family. Following is a list of the BEINSTINGEL lineage
as best as I know it:
Josef BEINSTINGEL (father of: Duro BEINSTINGEL; Josef was born 11 September 1882
Backa Palanka, married in Nijemci, crushed to death by a mill stone) married
Magdalena BARDON (born in Nijemci) parents of
- Josef BEINSTINGEL (born 20 August 1909 Yugoslavia) married Magdalena HARFMAN
(parents were Christina BLUM (from Bonovce, died 1942) and Jakob HARFMAN;
Magdalena was born 8 February 1909, died 4 April 1994) They were parents of Carl
BEINSTINGEL born 25 June 1938 Nijemci, Yugoslavia
I can supply a gedcom file for the siblings and other information that might be needed. I
have been contacted by an Austrian-Hungary research group that says they have a record of a
Philipp BEINSTINGEL being married in Vienna, Austria in 1740. I am awaiting more
information on those records. My grandfather Josef BEINSTINGEL was in WW II, I am
told as a soldier out of Yugoslavia. He went to Poland and later the family lost contact with
him. He was located by the Red Cross in 1948 in a POW camp in Italy. In 1944 the family
was taken to Vienna where they stayed till 1945 at which time they were then moved by train
to Passau, Germany. They stayed in Passau until they came to the USA in 1951.

REGION: Banat, near Temesoara, the town of Ghizela and perhaps others.
It's now Western Romania.
SURNAMES: WARACK, HORRASZ, SCHNEIDER
My grandfather emigrated from the Banat during WW I. I'm pretty ignorant
of how to proceed (since he died in 1938 and my grandmother died in 1968)
in learning ANYTHING about the area. My living aunts and uncles were
all born in the US. I'd love to just tune into what other people are doing or
have done.

WHITE, ANN BRILL
eMail address: anniebw@bellatlantic.net
I am looking for information on the the following surnames: BRILL, GLOSSMANN, and
FORBAGER. My grandfather, Peter BRILL, was a Transylvania Saxon who came from the
area of Timisoara, Romania. His father was killed in a threshing machine accident when he
was an infant, and his mother remarried. Peter BRILL came to America after WWI and
settled in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and married Elizabeth GLOSSMANN. Peter's half sister
is
Margaret FORBAGER of St. Petersburg, FL. Any information would be helpful.
Thanks!

Location: Batschka - town of Apatin
Names: IMHOF, LORCH, and FLESS
According to family tradition, Georg IMHOF and Elizabeth LORCH, my maternal
great-grandparents, left Apatin about 1903. They brought with them their three young
daughters, Maria, Rozina, and Elizabeth. They first went to Saginaw, Michgan, where they
worked on a farm for a few years; next, they went to St. Louis, where Georg worked in a
factory, and where other IMHOFS already lived.
Another daughter, Helen, was born there in 1910; next, they moved to Loomis, Wisconsin,
where they farmed, following an IMHOF brother and sister (who married a CHA-JA, later
changed to SHIER); and finally, back to St. Louis, around 1919. By this time, my
grandmother, Maria IMHOF, had married August C. FRIEHS, who left Silesia, with his
parents, also around 1903.
Elizabeth LORCH, left behind a large family in Apatin, including her parents Ferdinand
LORCH, and Rozina FLESS. Her youngest sister, Maria LORCH, however, also went to
St.
Louis and was married to Joseph KRIX. The oldest sister, Anna LORCH, married Frantz
KOENIG. There were 10 other siblings.
I will be looking at microfilms at the local FHL, and already know the names IMHOF,
LORCH, and FLESZ can be found in the 1828
Land

Dora LANYI born 15 Aug 1874, Golnitzbanya, Hungary. (father: Joseph LANYI).
To my knowledge, this is present day Gelnica Spiaska Nova Ves. I checked LDS microfilms
for both Catholic and Lutheran church and did find some LANYI name entries, but could not
find any Joseph or Dora. The LANYI entries in film were earlier than I could connect
into.
She married Anton REGNIER (later changed name to Renye upon
arriving in
USA). They were married in Philadelphia 8 Oct 1904. Regnier came originally from Alsace
Lorraine but came to the Triebswetter (Torontal) area around 1650. Some of the family
married into TOUTTENUITS family (of which I have very little info).

I have found an excellent reference book series on the Medieval Balkans from
the University of Michigan Press by John V. A. Fine:
The Early Medieval Balkans, A Critical Survey from the Sixth to Late
Twelfth Century and
The Late Medieval Balkans A Critical Survey from the Late Twelfth Century
to the Ottoman Conquest. As of yet, there are only these two volumes in
the series. I am eagerly awaiting any future volumes. These volumes can be
found at Borders Books. I have yet to find a more thorough and scholarly
history of this region. I am also joining the Croatian Genealogical
Society.

I am researching surnames: ZITZKA, BAUMGARTNER, KORNACKER from Glogovatz or
Schondorf (Schoendorf) Austria-Hungary (both are near Arad) My grandparents Wendal J.
ZITZKA and Barbara BAUMGARTNER and my great grandparents Anton
BAUMGARTNER and Anna KORNACKER immigrated to Tonawanda, New York 1911 and
1912 from Glogovatz. I believe that there are family still remaining in those two towns
which are now in Romania. I would appreciate any information.
