Background and Status: This new Canadian-based genealogy society had its first organizational meeting in Calgary on Monday evening 24 July 1994. This was the evening prior to the first FEEFHS Canadian Conference. The meeting was called and was well publicized in advance by Ewald Wushke, publisher of the Wandering Volhynian Newsletter. Ewald is clearly the world's foremost living authority on German-Volhynian genealogy.

The stated purpose of the Wandering Volhynian Genealogy Society is to evolve into a self-sustaining Volhynian genealogy organization that can also continue to publish the Wandering Volhynian. It is being created in this manner to be able to continue to advance the cause of German-Volhynian genealogy at such time as Ewald decides to retire.

Over thirty persons from Canada and America attended the meeting. After Ewald's presentation regarding the importance of creating a permanent self-sustaining organization, there was discussion of an appropriate name. This name was chosen by acclamation and Ewald was selected as the founding leader on the same basis.

Ewald asked for volunteers interested in serving in an active capacity on a Board of Directors, with the hope that there would be someone to represent all major geographic locations where Volhynians settled in North America. Several persons responded that evening and Ewald has since accepted the seven individuals named below as his interim Board volunteers:

Since that first meeting in July 1995, this interim Board has been created and they have been in discussion as to the next steps to take. While no official organization has occurred yet, it is expected that an annnouncment will be made by Ewald.
