BANDLEY, Paula
eMail address: pbandley@email.msn.com

I am looking for the any ancestors of Kaspar BANDLI born about 1606 in Tschappina, Graubunden Canton, Switzerland. He was married to Sara MARUGG, born about 1607. He had a brother whose name was Hans who was born abt 1615. Kaspar was my direct ancestor, therefore I would like any information that goes back further than him. He came from a group called Free Walsers who were wandering farmers and Mercenaries between 1200 AD and 1500 AD. Any information on this family would be greatly appreciated. Other great-grandparents are LANICCA, NAROLD, HEINZ, CAMENISCH, and BEUHLER or BUHLER.

BAUMGARDNER, Robert
eMail address: gen1bob@bizinter.net

I have reason to believe my Swiss BAUMGARTNER ancestors came from Canton Bern near the towns of Trub or Langnau. Hans Baumgartner was born 1520 at Langnau, Bern Canton, Switzerland. Fridli Baumgartner was born 1548 at Langnau, Bern Canton. Peter Baumgartner was born 6 July 1600 at Langnau, Bern Canton. Hans Baumgartner was born 8 March 1629 at Langnau, Bern Canton. He emigrated to America aboard the Ship "Samuel" on 11 August 1732 to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. John and ? had five children: 3 girls and 2 boys born in America. Most wanted is the maiden name of his wife. I would like to correspond with others working on this surname. There is a group of cousins working on the Internet who are very interested in this Baumgartner Surname. Also we would like to contact any Swiss Baumgartner's working on this surname genealogy if possible.

Webmaster's Note: There is a Chur Switzerland located in Canton Graubünden. If this is your location, you might wish to review the 5 topics listed in the holdings of the FHL Catalog for Salt Lake City - especially the census and emigration/immigration topics - in looking for others.

CARR, Donna

I am researching Anna HITZ, born 16 October 1824 in Canton Graubunden, Switzerland. She married Martin RISCH. Children: Christian, Lucy, John, Nellie, Anna, Henry. After Martin's death, the family emigrated to Buffalo County, Wisconsin, in 1866. A last child, Mary, was born 1866 in Wisconsin. The RISCH family were German-speaking Schweizerdeutsch farmers, not Roman Catholic, possibly Calvinist. Anna HITZ RISCH died 2 October 1897 and was buried at Minnieska, Minnesota. RISCH descendants currently reside in Wisconsin, Minnesota, South Dakota and Saskatchewan, Canada.

CUENI, Mark and Hwaji

I am interested in finding the family history of Clemens Paul CUENI, also known as Paul Clemens Cueni, and Clement Paul Cueni, born at Roeschenx (Canton Bern) Switzerland in 1899, and his wife, Eugenie Sophie SCHAER, born in 1905 at Basel, Switzerland. Clemens Paul Cueni is the son of Ignaz Cueni, and the grandson of Josef Baptist Cueni. Ignaz Cueni is believed to have been involved in a quarrying enterprise. Eugenie Sophie Schaer is the daughter of Eugen Karl Peter Schaer of Zaugenried, Berner Oberland. Eugen Karl is believed to have been involved in European railroad operations prior to WW II. Other family names, related to Cueni and Schaer, in which I have an interest are: WEBER, SCHNELL, and GYSIN. All these names have many phonetic variants. I would appreciate any and all information regarding these families. And whatever information I have is yours for the asking, and available through the LDS archives and the FTM (Family Tree Master).

DAGGETT, Sara
email address; ssd@ultra1.pitnet.net

According to my husband's great-grandfather's marriage license, he was born in Switzerland. He was Ernst Morschauser, a laborer, son of John and Agnes MORSCHAUSER. On 3 May 1889 he married Antonia ZIMMER at Madison, Wisconsin. They lived at Madison until their deaths and had 13 children. One of their daughters, Margaret Daggett, was my husband's grandmother. Ernst might have had some connection to Pittsburgh. Thank you for any information.

ESSICK, Martin and Mae
eMail address: mandm@axs2k.net

I have an LDS microfilm that says "Andreas ESSICK / ESSIG was a Swiss. He had two sons who went to Werttemburg, Germany ..." It would appear that one son was Rudolph ESSIG born about 1673 who emigrated to America, arriving at Philadelphia 16 Sep 1736 with two sons -- Georg Abraham ESSIG, born about 1696 and Hans Michael ESSIG, born about 1706. I want to know more about this Andreas ESSICK / ESSIG and his family. I have Rudolph's descendants to the present and would be glad to exchange info with anyone who can provide info on Andreas.

GULDIN, David A.
eMail address: guldin@ptialaska.net

(Roman Catholic, Calvanist?)

I am looking for information on the GULDIN / GULDI / GOLDASTI family before they emigrated from St. Gall / St. Gallen or Bern / Berne to America in 1710. I am specifically seeking information on Melchoir GULDIN born at St. Gall in 1529, guildmaster in 1580, Senator in 1583, died in 1626. Paul GULDIN, born 1577, joined the Roman Catholic Jesuit order in 1597. He was professor of mathamatics at Grantz and Vienna, authored several books (titles?) and died 3 November 1643. Emmanuel Fred M. GULDIN born, 13 March 1699, was a Roman Catholic minister, although he probably was involved in Zwingli's reformation efforts. He served at Stettlen (1692-1696), Bern Cathedral (1696-1699) and Boltiger in 1701. He emigrated with the family to Philadelphia, USA in 1710. He may have served time in a Swiss prison for actions involved in reformation. The family crest is believed to be a silver Pegasus with raised golden wings on a field of blue, jumping over three silver acorns. The family members used Romansch as their main language. Any information is greatly appreciated.

Adelaide MEIER, born 13 December 1847 at Wohlenschivel, Aargau, Switzerland. I believe her father was Johann MEIER, a Catholic. She emigrated to Chicago, Illinois about 1950 and was married 6 December 1863 at Chhicago to Jacob KLASSEN, an emigrant from Elhenz, Prussia. I need the parents and siblings of Adelaide. HEISE, David

email address: heisebicwm@linetap.com

I am searching for origin of a Hans HISLY (we believe it is HEISE) who arrived on the ship "Adventurer" on 2 October 1727 at Philadelphia from Rotterdam, Holland. He settled near Lebanon, Pennsylvania where numerous sons are recorded on tax lists. He is believed to have been a member of the Anabaptist / Mennonite faith in Germany or Switzerland. There is no record of his wife however it is believed he was born about 1700, was taxed in Lebanon Township in 1750 and 1759 and was granted a land warrant in Lebanon Township in 1750. It is also believed our progenators spelled the name HEISE and came from Switzerland originally perhaps fleeing religious persecution into Germany or Alsace. His sons were John and probably Martin, Michael, Daniel, Peter, and Christian. We do know that we are descended from the one son John born 1728 who married Barbara YORDY. I am very greatful for your offer to post it.

HUGEBACK, LeAnn M.
eMail address: leann.hugeback@travis.af.mil

I am seeking the ancestors of Michael A. SCHWERY born 1795, died 1815. His wife was ROSSEEN or ROSSEN. Hans Martin RUSSENBERGER was born at Schleitheim Switzerland 3 December 1831 and emigrated to Australia arriving at Sydney 18 August 1854. I have a good record of him and his family as there is only one Russenberger family in Australia. A sister, Veronika, was born on 28 August 1838 and "went to America" I have contacted many Russenbergers in the U.S.A. particularly in Minnesota and Arkansa but no link so far to Veronika. Any information would be appreciated.

KOHLI, Charles R.

eMail address: crkohli@aol.com

(Protestant)

I'm researching the family name KOHLI from Saanen, Bern, Switzerland. I believe they were members of the Protestant Church at Saanen. Chris KOHLI, born 12 March 1836, married Rosa KUESTLER (or HICKLER), before 1859. She was born 5 February 1836. They had five children: Christian Carl, born 20 March 1859; Emil F., born 10 October 1864; Robert John born 28 October 1878; Bertha born ?; and an infant who probably died in Switzerland. I believe that Christian emigrated in 1880 to Dodge County, Wisconsin and Chris and the remainder of the family emigrated in the 1890's to Dodge County, Wisconsin. Any information on the KOHLI family would be appreciated. I understand that the parish records from Saanen have not been released to Bern for microfilming. Thanks
Webmaster's Note: While no FHL microfilm exists, three books at the FHL deal with batptisms (1557-1581, and marriages: 1563-1751 and 1626-1672. In all there are 8 topics totaling about 14 collections in the FHL Catalog and thus it does merit your review. The books do not circulate.

MOWRER, Michael
email address: mowrerms@26asg.heidelberg.army.mil

(Reformed)

I strongly suspect Swiss ancestry for my MAURER ancestors. I only have documentation as far back as Christian MAURER, born 1774 or 1775, probably in Berks Coounty, Pennsylvania. He married (Anna?) Elisabeth ERNI / ERNY / ERNE circa 1792 - 1796, probably in Berks County or Northumberland County, Pennsylvania. I think Christian MAURER'S father was also named Christian MAURER, and came to Pennsylvania in 1765 aboard the ship "Polly" (along with an URFFER and a HANMUELLER, if I recall correctly), dying about 1779 in Ruscombmanor Township, Berks County, PA. I suspect my MAURERS originally came from Canton Bern or Zurich or Aargau or Basel, but probably spent some time in Alsace or the German Palatinate before coming to the USA. "Hot spots" for my research are the Frankenthal area of the German Palatinate, west of Ludwigshafen, Woerth, Alsace, and Seftigen, Steffisburg and Zweisimmern, Canton Bern. My Maurers were strongly associated with PETRY and BREINER / BRINER and also with KRICK and KERN families in Pennsylvania and later in Wayne Coounty, Ohio. I speak and write German, and welcome correspondence on MAURERS or other families who followed the Switzerland-Alsace-Palatinate pattern to Pennsylvania in the 1700s. There is a chance my MAURERS may have been Moravian or Mennonite / Amish, but existing evidence only shows Reformed. I live in Heidelberg, Germany, and have for 23 years.

MUELLER, Deborah

email address: Deborah.Mueller@chron.com

I am looking for Jacob STRAUB, or (von STRAUB). He was born in Canton Bern 23 December 1831. He emigrated to the US 12 April 1854. I think he came in through New York. He then went to Marine (Madison County) Illinois. I do not know his parents name or if there were brothers and sisters. He was a farmer. He was not Catholic.

He married Karolina Schaeffer in November 1869. He served in the Civil War in the US and became a citizen in November 1864. They had 10 children. Seven of them were born in Madison County, Illinois. One was born in Bellaire, Ohio and the last two were born in St. Louis, Missouri. Both Jacob and Karolina died and are buried at St. Louis, Missouri. I am looking for information from Switzerland that will tell me who his family is. I would like to see if there are any families members still there. Thank you.
Webmaster's Note: Contact the IGS concerning a CD-ROM Swiss Telephone Directory lookup of your surname.

POWER, Carol MESSINGER
eMail address: sweetwater@wyoming.com

I am trying to find ancestral information on the Johannes MESSINGER (sometimes found as MOESSINGER / MÖSSINGER / MOSSINGER) family which emigrated to Pennsylvania in 1732 from Basel, Switzerland on the ship "Pink Johnson". Family members included Johannes MESSINGER (father), Elizabeth MESSINGER (mother), Michale MESSINGER (son), Paule MESSINGER (son), Jacob MESSINGER (son), and Maria MESSINGER (daughter). All we know (?) is that he (or his ancestors) came from Prussia "where they lived along the Rhine." They may have been members of the German Reformed Church. I can find no leads on their life (including marriage or births) in Basel nor in Prussia. Anyone have any ideas on where to really begin this search?? Any suggestions welcome.

TRAXLER, Donald A.
eMail address: dtraxler@ix.netcom.com

Anyone with information regarding the above family, prior to those dates, I will appreciate hearing from them.
