Latest Update: 27 September 1996

Background FEEFHS thanks Ewald Keil of Germany for his eMail message of 16 June in which made us aware this way of Romeo Bernreuther and this database. Ewald said: "Maybe somebody at FEEFHS is interested in the following information of my friend Romeo Bernreuther, sysop of the greatest FIDO (no WWW links possible, only e-mail exchange!) BBS in southwest Germany, having become only recently a very 'agressive' genealogist. He speaks English. Here is Romeo's information, in free translation, with some terms left in German...":

(Message from Romeo): "I am establishing, in cooperation with a 'Heimatbund', a database of persons from the villages and towns where the ancestors of my maternal grandmother lived (as of now, about 800 persons). These villages are located in the 'Karpathen-Ukraine' and were populated by Austrian immigrants, in 1775. If you meet somebody who does research in that northwestern corner of late 'Oesterreich-Ungarn', feel free to pass my address to her or him."

In June 1996 FEEFHS contacted Romeo, who lives in Weinstadt Germany (just east of Stuttgart). Romeo provided us with the following copyrighted information which we are pleased to share with all persons who browse this web site:

Karpatho-Ukraine Database. This has been prepared by Romeo Bernreuther and the Theresientaler Hematbund. "This database was established using Brothers Keeper for WIN software. Thus it can be exported in GEDCOM-format. Also an ASCII list can be created of the persons with date of birth, marriage, death and the appropriate parents"

On 9 July 1996 this Karpatho-Ukraine-Database was posted on this web site.

Romeo does this work together with the President of the Theresientaler Heimatbund. "The database can not be accessed via mail or online, because there we have no way to integrate it in our BBS-software."

See also the Theresientaler Heimatbund society HomePage.

Facts about the Karpatho-Ukraine Database:

Note from Romeo: "In the documents, the names may vary because they were written by hungarian-speeking priests. p.e. (i.e): DACZER for DACER or CZEPECZAUER for ZEPEZAUER. We use only the German spelling. We have documents of about 200 more persons. They will be entered in July."

"We would (plan to) write some information about the history, the austrian immigrants from 1775 and maybe some geographical information. Maybe some maps too. And the database or a person list."

The Karpathen-Ukraine-Database was first posted on 9 July 1996.
