Vaclav NOVAK (NOWAK) was born in village of Pobevratd (Podebrady) Bohemia 3 March 1842, the son of Jan NOVAK and Katerina LUKAVEC. He sired two daughters Emily born 2 February 1878 ? and Bessie born 15 April 1881 ? who emigrated to Cleveland Ohio with a "teacher" about 1884 ?. Vaclav followed but told immigration he came on 16 February 1882. Emily said her father, Vaclav, was married in Bohemia and she had a brother. She thought her brother and mother died in Bohemia of "black measles". Any information to clarify Emily and Bessie's mother and confirm birth dates appreciated. All catholic and all remained in Cleveland. Vaclav told U.S. Census he was not married in Bohemia. Cleveland records have been searched and many are known to be false.
Webmaster's Note: The "black measles" of the early to mid 1800's was not the Plague (Black Death) but a disease now called Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. It was also called Black Fever, Blue Measles, Blue Fever and Tobia Fever. Of the nine listing for Nowak or Novak in the Surname Search section of the FHL catalog, you might check out #3 Michael Nowak (FHL microfilm #2055192 item 5) and #4 the Nowak-Novak Network News. I suspect that Nowak is the Polish version of the Czechoslovak Novak. There are 13 listings for Nowak and 54 for Novak in the FEEFHS Website Index (see hot links at the top and bottom of every FEEFHS web page)

I am looking for descendants of Josef LUSTIG born circa 1870. His wife's name is unknown. His last known residence was Pribram, Czech Republic. He had two sons, Karel and Ruda. Does anyone know how I could find out if the family still lives there? A response in English or Czech is fine. Thanks.
Webmaster's Note: The FEEFHS Genealogy ToolKit had a section called "Lookups - Telephone and eMail Addresses. The third hotlink is for Worldwide Telephone Dioirectories on the Web by Rob Hoare. He has a Czech Republic telephone book but it only permits you to search onr town or village at a time. You might have a Czech mapor the names of nearby larger cities available it you cannot find them in Pribram. Try Prague and other nearby but larger towns and cities.

I am also seeking the ancestors and descendants of Andreas MAIER / MAYER / MEYER born 22 December 1829 at Maria Kulm Bohemia, emigrated to Milwaukee in 1854 and married Katherina SCHNIEDER of Milwaukee. His father was Georg Simon MAYER, born 1791 at Kalerov (formerly Katzengruen). His grandfather was Mathius MEYER, born 1757. His mother was Ewa Magdalene BLASEL, born circa 1800 at Ober Schusserieth (Horni Castrov). Her father was Anton PLASSEL born 1759. His siblings were Andrea, George and Margaretha, who married a SOMMERS. I do not have eMail.

LYONS, L. Jack
eMail address: LJL@prodigy.net

BUDIN is one of the family names I am researching. My grandfather Karel Budin, later changed to Charles Budin, and his five brothers and one sister emigrated from Bohemia, Austria in the 1880's. Charles Budin married Josephine ZEMAN, also from Bohemia, Austria. I am interested in researching back into Bohemia to look for the Budin and Zeman families. Also, on an 1882 FEEFHS map of Bohemia there was a town named Budin, which does not exist on modern maps. I wondered what happened to it.

MIKKELSON, Irene YURISTA

(Orthodox)

My father was Gregory JURISTA, (Anglisized to YURISTA) born 24 May 1888 at Regetovka, Saris, Slovakia. He came to America in 1907 via Ellis Island and settled in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He married (on 21 September 1912) Julia ZBIHLEY, born 12 January 1890 at Regetovka, Saris, Slovakia. She arrived in this country 29 September 1909. Originally they were Orthodox, were called Greek Catholic when only Catholicism was allowed in Austro-Hungary. In this country, they returned to the Orthodox faith. Gregory died in November 1955 and Julia in April 1952. I would also like to know the meaning of my surnames, JURISTA, ZBIHLEY, KOSTIK, PREKSTA and HAFICH. I would also like to learn when the villages of Ondavka, Regetovka, Becherov, Chmelova and Stebnik , all in Saris County of Slovakia, were established. Thanks for any information you are able to provide. Thank you.

NEMEC, Carol A.
eMail address: kuiipo@juno.com

I am seeking information on the following surnames: PONEC, SATORIE, KRYTINAR and PRASEK. Rudolph Ponec born l859 at Smecna, came to USA in the late l800's and settled at Omaha Nebraska. His father's name was Vincenz or Vencentio. Anton Satorie came from Podmoky and was born 13 June l867. He married Antonia VOBRIL (her parents were Joseph Vobril and Antonia NEDVED) She may have come from Bratislava. Franciscus Satorie was born at Podmoky and married Maria KANKA. Thier son Franciscus Wencelaus Satorie died at Prague June l987. Joseph KRYTINER (or Krytinar) was born 18 March l878. He probably came from the Brno area and came to the USA as a teenager. Mary Agnes NOVOTNY born 10 June 878, came at the same time. They settled at Plattsmouth, Nebraska.

I am also looking for information about a library source of a book written by a man named Prasek probably published prior to l9l8 in which he outlined his wife's family tree. Her maiden name was PONEC and she was from Spain. The purpose was to claim some sort of nobility going back to Spain in the l6th-l7th century. Evidently the name PONEC evolved from the name PONCE...They emigrated to Bohemia and the last two letters were changed. I understand that after l9l8 claiming nobility was no longer allowed. It possibly could be authored by Justin Vaclav Prasek, Vladimar Prasek, or another Prasek. I have found several books on the World Catalog written by at least four Praseks, but none of them seem to involve Czech history, rather that of other countries or other fields of endeavor Information any of the above would be appreciated. I also need the title of the Prasek book and whatever information you can give me regarding the contents.

PALOWSKI, Lisa

I am searching for information on Charles TUCEK, who came to USA in 1888, at age of 19 (born circa 1869) by himself. He was born somewhere near Prague (i.e. in Bohemia). He studied to be a priest, probably over there before coming to the Chicago area. He married Wilhelmina SHULTZ 20 August 1901. They had six children. His family in Czech. He is believed to have owned a pastry business. His brother, Carl Tucek, came over sometime after he did. We don't know his mother or father's name, his birhplace or what port left from or entered into the USA. Some say they thought emigrated to Canada. We have learned that he was cousin to the legendary ballerenia, Anna PAVLOVA. Without more information on my great-grandfathers side I will never be able to connect the two. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I am trying to find ancestors that date back to before my great-grandparents. My great-grandfather was Adam ROSENBAUM and his wife was Katharina, nee SCHWEITZER. They lived at Katzengruen, Bohemia. I believe this is now called Kalerov. Their son, Ignatz ROSENBAUM married Hermine ZUCKERBAECKER on 28 June 1887 at Vienna, Austria. Ignatz died 21 June 1913. All of the above were Jewish. Your help would be greatly appreciated.
Webmaster's Note: No FHL microfilm is listed for your location in the 17th edition of the FHL Catalog. A book in German titled Juden in Böhemen by Rudolph M. Walschek (1990) might provide a helpful overview. There are 13 listings of Rosenbaum under the "Surname Search" section of the FHL Catalog. See listing #9 from Nira Czechoslovakia. There are 20 listings for the Schweitzer surname. I suggest you contact, subscibe to and submit your genealogy to Stammbaum - (German-Jewish SIG)

SCHWALBE, Tye
eMail address: tyesan@webtv.net

I am searching for information regarding sibings and parents of Josef SCHWALBE born at Auscha 19 June 1829 (now Ustek, Czech Republic). He was the son of a building contractor, went to architectural school at Prague and entered the contracting business at age 21. He married Elisabeth FROSCH (born at Auscha 1829). Her parents were Karl FROSCH (born 1807 at Auscha, died 14 March 1886 at Auscha) and Elisabeth WIETEK. Josef and Elisabeth had 3 sons and 4 daughters born to them at Auscha before coming to America (LaCrosse, Wisconsin) about 1868 where another 2 sons and 1 daughter were born. 6 children from this union survived to adulthood. Thank you for any help.
Webmaster's Note: The church and civil records for this village have not been microfilmed. However it is possible to research there. In lieu of visiting yourself, you might want contact the correct regional Czech archive by letter (they charge a fairly expensive fee) to search/provide basic vital records (join a nearby Czech genealogy society to learn more). Or you can engage an experienced Czech researcher such as Duncan Gardiner C.G, A.G. of Ohio do it for you on his semi-annual spring or fall client research trips to the Czech Republic.

I am interested in anyone researching the HAZAK surname from the town of Pabianice (near Lodz) and originally from Bohemia. I suspect Jozef Hazak, his wife Magdalena and four (?) children Karolina, Ambrozy, Francziszek and Weronica, migrated (in the early 1800's) from Bohemia to the Lodz industrial area, specifically Pabianice, as weavers. A variation of the surname that I have encountered in my research is CHAZAK. I am interested in finding out where in Bohemia they came from.
