I am researching my Mother's Mother, Scholastika MELISKOVA. She was born 7 February 1857 and died after 1919. She had a twin brother named Matej MELISKOVA, and he died 27 June 1857. She married Josef SCHNIERER 27 Ferbruary 1878. Josef was born 22 November 1851 and died after 1919. They had five children, of whom my Mother Maria SCHNIERER the youngest. She was born 20 February 1892 and died 06 October 1953 in New Jersey, USA. Both Scholastika and Josef SCHNIERER were born and died at Handlova, Czechoslovakia, which is now in the Slovak Republic. Scholastika had a brother, Josef MELISKO, who was born 07 March 1861. She also had a sister, Juliana MELISKO, born 11 December 1858. I have no record when Josef and Juliana MELISKO died. I would like to get family information on the MELISKO family. I received this information from "Statny Oblastny Archiv V. Nitre" in 1992. Thank you for taking the time to read this.

I am searching for information on the FUHRER / FUEHRER (FÜHRER) Family. My grandfather, Ignacz (Yitzchak) FUHRER, was born in 1853 at Tiba, Hungary (now Tibava, Slovakia) near Sobrance. His parents were Abraham FUHRER and Golda STERN. I have no knowledge of his siblings. Ignacz married twice, and he had twelve sons. Some of them were born in Ungvar, Hungary and Natafalva, Hungary. The oldest son, Josef FUHRER (born in 1885), emigrated to the USA in 1910 or 1911. We believe his port of entry was Philadelphia. He may have worked in coal mines near Ungvar or Sobrance. He lived at the coal mining towns of Pocohontas, Virginia and Zeigler, Illinois until about 1930. The other sons were named David, Moricz, Aaron, Hersko / Hersh, Mathias, Jakob, Sandor and Abraham. Ignacz's two wives were Sali / Zali EISNER and Antonina GOLDBLATT. I am also looking for informatiom on the coal mines in the Ungvar/Sobrance area.

GOLDMAN, Leon

I am searching for my grandmother and grandfather from Lopany, Hungary (now Slovakia) circa 1870. Grandmother's name was Dora FRIEDMAN. She married Max GOLDMAN at Lipany about 1870. They emigrated to the US settling at Cleveland, Ohio about 1873. Nothing is known about Max GOLDMAN other than that he married Dora in Lipany (then known as Lipian or Lpijan, Hungary). Dora's father was Jacob FRIEDMAN; her mother was Leah JUNG. Dora's sisters were Rebecca (married Morris HERSCH, also from the Lipian area) and Hanna (born at Lipnitz, Hungary). Any information about either Max GOLDMAN or Dora FRIEDMAN, including Synagogue record location (if any), Austro-Hungarian birth or census records, or the like, would be very useful and appreciated.

My grandfather is listed in the 1910 Pennsylvania Census as UHUCH. We knew him as Joseph URICK. I remember him signing his name and I thought it started with a "Y". In retrospect, it probably was a "J". He married my grandmother in 1907 at Lebanon, Pennsylvania shortly after she immigrated to America. She was from Palanka and he was from across the Danube, probably Erdevik or Suszek. They still lived at Lebanon in 1910. He probably immigrated to America in 1906, but I can't find him in the Ellis Island Files. His nationality in census, social security records, etc. was Austrian / Slovak. He had a brother who emigrated to South America. My mother remembers relatives in Lebanon, Pennsylvania. I found the wife, Julga PECKOVSKY, in the Ellis Island files in 1905. She came from Erdevik with her infant son, Paul. Does anyone know where I might find more information on Slovaks living in Erdevik area in the early 1900's ? LDS records don't seem to have anything for that area.

SOHR, Michael
eMail address: Michael_Sohr@acml.com

My great-great-grandparents are from the area of Fobasy, Slovakia. Their names were Michael MATUSCAKJ and Mary (nee NOVAJOVSKY) MATUSCAK. Michael died in the early 1900s, probably in or around Forbasy, while Mary and their 10 children emigrated to the United States after his death. Mary was born on 1 Febraury 1850. Their children were Anna, John, Steven, Bill, Mary, Victoria, Katie, Sophie, Vera and Dorothy. Dorothy is my great-grandmother and she was born (probably at Forbasy) on January 2, 1889. I would be grateful if you could provide any recommendations to further my search. Specifically, I am trying to get copies of birth certificates, baptism certificates, etc. Thanks very much for any help you can offer.

I am searching for relatives in Slokavia. My father, George Korpas, was born at Zipov, Slovakia in 1901. He has two brothers and one sister. He helped to build a Greek Catholic Church there before he immigrated to America. I would live to find some relatives and have a picture of the church also. Thank you.
