FISCHER, Joseph H.
22574 Toreador Drive, Salinas, California 93908-1121

My grandfather Charles FISCHER was born February 1863 somewhere in Alsace Lorraine. His parents were Christoph Fischer and Christine DAHN. Charles arrived in the United States on 12 August 1887. His Declaration of Intention paper was taken out on 24 march 1890 and his Petition for Naturalization on 29 September 1892 in New York City. Charles was married on 31 December 1890 to Louise DOPPLER, born 1872 in Alsace Lorraine. She arrived in the United States in 1887. Her fathers name was Antone Doppler and her mother was Barbara MERTH.

Charles and Louise were married at the Second German Methodist Episcopal Church at 346 West 40th Street, New York City (no longer exists). I have written to the Methodist Archives but have not received and answer yet. On the marriage certificate it states he was widowed (prior marriage). I am unable to determine if his first wife died in the United States or Alsace Lorraine. Charles and Louise had four children: Louise born 1891, Charles born 1893, Joseph born 1895, and Harry born 1897. They are now deceased.

In the 1900 Federal Census a Paulina was listed as his wife and a son listed with the name of Issac. In the 1905 New York Census neither were listed. I have not been able to find them listed any where. Paulina came to the U.S. in 1840.

In 1908 Charles married a widow by the name of Barbara MATHY MUELLER. She was also born in Alsace Lorraine in 1868. Her parents were Nicolas Mathy and Barbara CONRAD. She had three children from a previous marriage: Mary born 1892, but did not enter the U.S. until 1907, Paul, born 1898, and Eugenia born 1900. Chalres did not have any chldren from this marriage. The last time I saw them was in 1940 while in the service. I do not know when they died. I have lived in California since I left the service so had very little contact with any relatives since 1945. I became interested in genealogy in 1991 and there are no living relatives who can help me in my research. I hope this entry will be seen by someone who can be of help.

Greetings from France! I have researched in Alsace all the surnames (persons) related to MEICHEL, MEUCHEL, MAICHLE, MAYCHELL, etc. I would like to get in touch with people who know these stems before 1800. I am also interrested in BAYERN (today you can still find some Meichel there). In BADEN-WUERTTEMBERG (at the end of the middle-ages this surname was very common there) and even the Pfalz (in the 17th century there were Meichel and Meuchel).

I am also a professional genealogist in Strasbourg. Please see my listing on the FEEFHS Professional Genealogist Database.
