BENJAMIN, Robert (Bob) L.
eMail address: 4benjamins@networksplus.net

I am looking for the parents of Joseph ESCHBAUGH, born 1844 at Eschbaugh, Baden, Germany. (By all accounts there is no Eschbaugh in Baden, but there are a lot of places with similar names in Baden and nearby.) Joseph immigrated to the U.S. in 1861 to escape the draft. He was married twice. His first wife was Martha Jane SAYRE. They had a set of twins, Isa Dora and Charles. They were born 13 October 1872. Joseph and Martha divorced and Martha took Isa Dora and Joseph took Charles. Joseph's second marriage was to Mahala SWAIN in December 1880. They had three children: Laura Lane born 20 February 1883, died 20 February 1954; Joseph Clyde born 1884, died 1958; and Thomas Ross, born 24 August 1887.

CARNEY, Ann
eMail address: ann_carney01@hotmail.com

(Jewish ?)

I am seeking information on George LUDWIG born 1860 in Baden, Germany. His wife, Mary MEDEX, was born at London, England in 1869. George emigrated to Port Chalmers, New Zealand where he worked as a fisherman. George and Mary had one son, Edward George LUDWIG, born 12 September 1889. I do not know their religion, but there is a strong possibility that Mary was Jewish. I have no information on their death dates.

CARPENTER, Douglas
eMail address: d.l.carpenter@worldnet.att.net

I am looking for the place of birth of my great-grandfather, Joseph REISER, who is listed on the U.S. census as being born in Baden, Germany. He emigrated from the port of LeHarve to New York on the ship "Zurich" and arrived aaaat the port of New York on 31 December 1860. He was listed on the ship's passenger list as 21 years of age. He married Ermetina KLUG from Bavaria about 1864 at Eckley, PA. Joseph died about 1893 at Whitehaven, Pennsylvania. Eermetina died at Pittston, Pennsylvania about 1918. They are both buried in St. Patrick's Cemetery at Whitehaven, PA. Joseph was Catholic. Their children, all born in North Kidder township, Carbon county, Pennsylvania, were: Charles, Theresa, Amelia, Joseph, Anna, Laura, Kattie, Henry, Clara, Edward, and Frances.

CARTER, Louise
eMail address: lacakaruby@aol.com

I am looking for information on my great-grandfather. According to the Union Army, his name was Timothe or Timothy HURLE. His name could have been Dimotius HURLE. He was born in Baden, Germany about 1827. He served in the Massachusetts Volunteer Calvary. He married (apparently in the U.S.) Christiana HIRTH or HART or HARDT who was born circa 1826. We have found a marriage that could be theirs, but we are not sure. It lists a woman named Christiana HIRTH and a man named Dimotius HALLER that were married at Boston on 15 April 1854. This date could be their marriage date because it coincides with the birth of their first child and the ages are just about right. It also lists Dimotius's occupation as a rope maker and we know he worked in a rope factory after the Civil War. Family legend says that Timothy was in the calvary in Germany and that is why he was in the calvary during the Civil War. All their children were baptized Catholic, although at least one of their sons, William, was a staunch member of the Lutheran Church. The last names of their children, all born in Boston, are spelled differently on their baptism record. Their name HURLE was changed to HURLEY (we think about 1880 - at least that is how it appears on the 1880 census). There apparently was a problem with one of the sons (family legend says something about vigilantes). I have been in contact with a woman from Spain who said that her HURLE ancestors came from the village of Tannheim, Germany.

CLEARY, Ellen
eMail address: ellencleary@earthlink.net

I am researching my gr-grandmother, Caroline GERNSBACHER, born 1 February 1821 at Buhl, Baden, Germany. She was the daughter of Aaron Hirsch GERNSBACHER and Rosalie/Rosa ACH. Her siblings were: Goetz, Bertha, Babeth, Abraham, Loeb, Malko, Joseph, Sophia, Babetta / Betty, and Henrietta GERNSBACHER. Caroline GERNSBACHER married Abraham KLEIN. Abraham died about 1896 at Speyer, Rheinpfalz, Bavaria, Germany, but I have not yet been able to document this. Abraham KLEIN and Caroline GERNSBACHER KLEIN had a daughter named Clara KLEIN, who was born 27 November 1859. Clara immigrated to the US when she was about 12. She was living with her uncle, Joseph GERNSBACHER, in New Orleans, LA in 1880. Clara KLEIN married Louis GOLDSMITH (born in Altleiningen, Germany on 22 July 1857) in New Orleans, Louisiana on 29 November 1882. Clara died 19 Jun 1946 at New Orleans, Louisana.

FANCHER, Patricia
eMail address: Patfancher1941@aol.com

I am looking for information on my great-grandparents, Josef WUNSCH born 1795 and Rosa ROTH born 1798. They were from Forbach Village, South Baden, Germany. Louis died in the US in 1870. They had 8 children, two of whom were Minnie and Louis, born 1837, both born at Forbach Village. Minnie immigrated to the US in 1867. The date of immigration for Louis is unknown, but he was in the US and served in the Civil War in 1861. When Louis was naturalized, he lived at 519 East 12th Street, New York City, New York. Louis was married twice: his first wife is unknown, but his second wife was Catherine Elizabeth (FISCHER) AULMAN. She was born in Hesse-Nassau and died at New York City 24 May 1903. Louis died 26 April 1897 in the US Veterans Administration Hospital at Togus, Maine.

FAY, Dee
eMail address: bdfay@gpcom.net

I am looking for information on John FAY, born 28 September 1791, married Barbara (last name unknown), died 7 July 1880 in Sangamon county, Illinois. Barbara was born 16 December 1800 in Germany. She died 12 October 1884 in Sangamon county, Illinois. They had two sons, both born in Baden, Germany: John, born 3 November 1821, died 6 May 1847 in Sangamon county, Illinois; and Michael born 2 June 1824, died 1905 in Moultie county, Illinois. The family settled in Sangamon county, Illinois and are listed in the 1830 US Federal census.

FOOTE, Kim
eMail address: WhiteDuv65@aol.com

I am researching my great-grandfather, Julius Franz BARTH, born 24 May 1854 in Baden, Germany; died 30 March 1930 at Collinsville, Illinois. He immigrated and arrived with his brother, believed to be Charles F. BARTH, in the U.S. on or about 12 February 1870. They were separated in New York and never heard from each other again. Julius heard from his family in Germany when their father, Charles F. BARTH, died, but he was unable to return to Germany. I've been told that his family may have owned a shoe factory in Germany. Julius married Elizabeth Margaret GINDLER, born 4 September 1864 at Troy, Illinois, died 2 March 1930. They had 11 children, 8 of whom survived: Karl born 1 January 1887, died 26 March 1941 in Illinois; Ella born 12 February 1888, died 1968 in Illinois; Friedrich born 3 December 1890, died 30 October 1959 in Illinois; Elizabeth born 23 March 1892, died 1955 in Illinois; Julius born 13 March 1895, died 22 September 1954 in Illinois; Theresa born 11 May 1899, died 22 February 1920 in Illinois; Klara born 26 May 1902, died April 1977 in South Dakota; and Frances born 31 October 1904, death date unknown.

FULWIDER, Dianne

(Roman Catholic)

I am looking for information on George HAUSWIRTH from Weingarten, Baden, Germany and Birgitta STELZER from Bruchsal, Baden, Germany. They were Catholic and were probably married in about 1864. They had two children in Baden: Frank (born 1865) and Mary (born 1867). The family immigrated to America and settled in Chicago and then in Nebraska. George and Birgitta both died in 1878 and left six orphans. I would love to share with others the information that I have on this family.

HOLLENBECK, Susan
eMail address: choll@epix.net

(Roman Catholic)

I am researching the family of John HOLLENBECK or HOLLERBACK, born Baden 1837 / 1838, aand immigrated to the U.S. between 1865-1870, and settled in New Jersey. He married Monica EISENHAUER (born 5 May 1828 in Germany) in Germany. Two of their children were born in Germany: Frank about 1865 and Theresa about 1867. John died in Passaic, New Jersey 6 March 1917. He lived at Rutherford, Bergen county, New Jersey and was a farmer. The first census I found him in was the 1870 census at Rutherford, New Jersey, occupation: laborer. Monica died 22 August 1915 at home at Rutherford, New Jersey. They were both Catholic.

HORENSKY, Mary Grace
eMail address: herk33@mediaone.net

I am looking for information on Johann August SCHENKEL, born 1835 in Baden, Germany; married Maria Anna HARTWICK, born 1835 in Baden, Germany. Johann was the son of Friedrich SCHENKEL and Elizabeth GUENTHER. Johann and Maria immigrated to the U.S., via New York, about 1860. Sometime after Johann arrived in the U.S., he dropped the "c" and became known as Johann August SHENKEL. Johann and Maria had a son, named John Joseph, who was born 16 May 1862 at Rochester, New York. John Joseph died 13 August 1907 at Mt. Hope, Maryland. He is buried at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The other children of Johann and Maria were: Frank, born March 1867; Jacob W., born July 1873, died 1939 (he served in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in the mid-1930's); and Henry, born in 1877. All but John Joseph were born and died in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Johann and Maria both died at Pittsburgh; Maria in 1917. On an IGI record for the christening of Johann August (13 September 1835), it lists Culmsee, Westpreussen, Preussen. I would like to know where Culmsee is located.
Webmaster's Note: Get a map from eeither Genealogy Unlimited or Travel Genie (both busineses have web pages on this web site - use the FEEFHS WEsite Index to find them). Culmsee was in Kreis Thorn of Westpreussen and should be on the 1882 map of West Pruessen here. It is now called Chelmza, Torun, Bydoszcz, Poland. Both Roman Catholic and Evangelical church records are available on FHL microfilm.

JUNGERS, Shari
PJSJMJ@aol.com

They immigrated to the U.S. with their children: William born 1834; Paul born 1832, Jakob born 1833; Caroline; and Mary born 1839. Joseph died at Zanesville, Ohio in 1851 and Veronica died at Worthington, Iowa in 1903. Caroline also died in the U.S., however, I have been unable to find a death record or burial place. She married a man named YOUNG and had a son whom Veronica raised to manhood.

KAPPTIE, Gail
eMail address: tkapptie@bigfoot.com

(Roman Catholic)

I am researching Leopold SACK and his wife, Margaret (maiden name unknown) born at Paimar, Baden, Germany around 1850. They were farmers and belonged to the Catholic church. Both Leopold and Margaret are buried at Paimar. They had six children. Their children Rosina, Conrad, and John immigrated to the United States, while Barthel, Walburga, and Anna Marie stayed in Germany. John and Conrad came first to Shenandoah, Pennsylvania about 1880. Their sister, Rosina, was already living there and married to Charles DIETZ. After three years working in the mines, John and Conrad went to Fort Benton, Montana and set up homesteads. John and Conrad never married. John returned to Germany. Conrad died in an accident in Portland, Oregon in 1937 and is buried at Great Falls, Montana. Other family members who remained in Baden, Germany were: Lina HAUN of Ilmspan; Walburga MAHLER of Lauda; Babbet KRAUS of Paimar; and many members of a family named BRENNFLECK of Ilmspan.

KUMZ, Alvia
eMail address: doug.kunz@worldnet.att.net

(Roman Catholic)

I am researching Michael SCHELL and his wife, Margarett, along with their three children (all born in Baden, Germany), William born circa 1836; Alace born circa 1841; and Clara born circa 1845. They immigrated to America and settled in Hamilton county, Ohio. They were Catholic. I am interested in finding out what ship they came to the United States on, where they came from in Germany, and if any of the family is still in Germany.

LeBLANC, Maurine SPAHNLE
eMail address: gleblanc@terragon.com

I am seeking information on Josef/Joseph and Rosata SCHWARZ and their descendants. Joseph was born in 1822 and Rosata was born about 27 December 1820. They resided in Baden-Baden, Germany and were Catholic. Joseph and Rosata had three children: Joseph born 1850, Michael born 1849, and Lena. Michael and Joseph deserted the German army (Calvary) probably during the Franco- Prussian War and immigrated to the United States. Upon entry into the U.S., they changed their surname from SCHWARZ to SPAHNLE. It is my speculation that Michael and Joseph changed their surname to SPAHNLE as that is what their mother's maiden name was. I have found records that Mary SPAHNLE and Caroline SPAHNLE were already in the U.S. upon their arrival. Mary SPAHNLE married John MICHAEL and Caroline SPAHNLE married John KARNOPP. Michael SPAHNLE married Fredericka HAMM and Joseph SPAHNLE married Sophia BOESWETTER. Both Michael and Joseph SPAHNLE settled in Nebraska and became farmers. Michael SPAHNLE's son, Max, married Mary Ann Handrock of the Saxony area. Mary Ann's father was Ernest HANDROCK and her mother was Marie Andonie SAC GIEBENRATH HANDROCK of Roglitz, Germany.

In the 1840 census, John and Julia were living at Farmington, St. Francois county, Missouri with Mary and John RUDY. I don't have a death date for Julia; but John died in 1841. John and Julia also had a son named Henry K. RESINGER. Henry had a daughter named Julia Ann RESINGER. Henry and his family were Seventh Day Adventists.

MEEKS, Debbie
eMail address: djam53@aol.com

I am searching for information on Adam SPAUGY or SPAUKIE, born about 1788 in Baden, and his wife, Margarita, born about 1798 in Baden. They immigrated to America, sailed on the ship "Merchant" to New York in 1833, eventually living in Pennsylvania. We have a transcription from Bridgegum Cemetery in Somerset county, Pennsylvania, that gives the death of Adam as 4 October 1853, and Margarita's death as 13 September 1863. Their children (listed in a will probate record) were: Catherine, Jacob, Margaret, Maria, Louisa, Daniel, Adam, John, and William. The first six children are listed in the ship's record, along with a "Maria Louise" and a notation by Daniel was "born at sea." Maria Louise is not listed in the will. The last three children were probably born in Pennsylvania, but I am not certain. The others were born in Baden. We don't know if they landed in New York and came right to Pennsylvania or spent a few years elsewhere. They died in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, where Adam owned 150 acres. We have no information before the ship voyage.

ROSEN, Sherrie
eMail address: sherriesmail@netscape.net

I'm searching for Caspar Jacob SHRIMP who is listed in census records as having been born in Baden Baden, Germany about 1820. He married Anna ALLEN circa 1840 in either Ohio, New Jersey or Pennsylvania, depending on which census record I look at. I did find the mother of Anna, Charity ALLEN, in Ohio so I believe that might be where they were married. Caspar settled in Campbell county, Kentucky around 1850, but I cannot find him before that time. I do not know if he changed or shortened his name, although in later years, his grandson did change the name to SCHRIMP. Different records list his name as either Caspar or Jacob. I lost him after the 1880 census. I tracked many of his children to California which is where my great-grandfather, Yancy Andy SHRIMP (son of George Washington SHRIMP), settled (he changed his name to James Andrew SCHRIMP in the early 1900's. Anna (ALLEN) SHRIMP, wife of Caspar Jacob SHRIMP, died and was buried in Campbell county, Keentucky. Caspar and Anna were members of the Flagspring Baptist Church and that is where Anna is buried. One of their sons, George Washington SHRIMP, left the Baptist church and became a Mormon. I am very interested in locating information on my SHRIMP family in Germany (parents, siblings, etc.)

SIGDESTAD, Kathy SCHNEIDER

My grandfather, Frank Xavier SCHNEIDER, immigrated to the United States with his brother (name unknown) about 1875 or 1876 from some place in Baden, Germany. Frank's birthdate is 24 June 1861. We know that he immigrated when he was 14 or 15 years old. He settled at St. Paul, Minnesota, where he married Mary FLORIAN from Bohemia. He had nine children who survived. He died 14 September 1944. I would like to find the place of his birth or the town in Baden he emigrated from. I do not know his parent's name. He may not have lived with his birthparents. He was Catholic.

SULZMAN, Henry W.
eMail address: BUDPETS@aol.com

I am researching Jacob SULZMANN born 1853 and immigrated to southern New Jersey to what was then called Spring Mills and is now called Grenloch. From my research, many people named SULZMANN came from Villingen, Baden, Germany. Jacob married Tamar CARTY about 1875 in south New Jersey. Tamar was born in 1840 in New Jersey, possibly Egg Harbor Township. They had five children, all born in America: Christina; Lillian, died 1932; Frederick, died 1932; Everett born 1888, died 1913; and one whose name is unknown. Jacob and Tamar died in the late 1800's or early 1900's.

TROTTER, Rea Ann

WANDER, Harriet
eMail address: rhrw5@netzero.net

I'm looking for the parents of my grandfather, John WANDER, born November 1849 at Buffalo, New York. He married Mary (last name unknown). The 1880 census indicates ancestry in Baden- Wurttemberg. Data I have points to the Stuttgart-Funkstatt region. My great-grandparents are most likely Johann WANDER (or WANDERER) who emigrated to Buffalo, New York prior to 1849. I have been unable to find any information regarding my grandfather prior to the 1880 census. I have information on the WANDER / WANDERER Funkstatt line dating back to 1451, compiled by Alwin E. J. WANDERER (born 1888, died 1951), but I cannot make a connection to my immediate family. Any help will be appreciated.

ZIPF, Pat
eMail address: patz@home.com
