BIEDRON, Susan
512 South Delphia Avenue, Park Ridge, Illinois 60068-
eMail address: sbiedron@starnetusa.net

I am researching the ancestry of Carl SCHNEIDER born March 1865 at Simonswald, Baden, Germany. His parents were Karl SCHNEIDER and Gresensia SCHILL. Carl came to New York City in 1881 and eventually settled at Chicago where he married Anna Elizabeth RAPP in 1894. Anna was born 1873 at Chicago, Illinois. He changed his first name to Charles. Charles died in 1927 at Chicago, Illinois and Anna died in 1924 at Chicago, Illinois. The children of Anna and Carl (Charles) were: 1) Charles, born 1895, no children; 2) Margaret, born 1904, had children named Mary Ann, Alice and Gail; and 3) Pauline, born 1910, had one daughter, Susan. Carl (Charles) SCHNEIDER had an older brother and four sisters, names unknown. A cousin ordered the microfilm of Obersimonswald but could not find his birth record. I am hoping that someone is familiar with Simonswald in the Black Forest and would have information on the family.
Webmaster's Note: See FHL microfilm #1181610, item 3 for genealogy of the Schill surname in Baden and Wuerttemberg. The Shill surname also existed in Bohemia. Your Schill surname may also be a variant of Schillenberger from Switzerland. Good luck with your Schneider line - there are 162 citation for that surname in the FHLC (Family History Library Catalog).

BRUNT, Dick
eMail address: dbrunt1@aol.com

I am seeking infomation about Theodore LEBER born 1840 in Baden Germany and moved to Ohio and Kansas and his wife Mary Annie DANZER born 1847 in Baer, Germany. Thank you.

CHUTICH, Marlys M.
11664 Tulip Street, North West, Coon Rapids, Minnesota 55433-2650

Anna Maria SCHUH, born 23 March 1834. She came to America in 1852. On 27 April 1856 she marries Jacob Samuel HAUCK in Berlin (since World War I renamed Kitchener), Ontario, Canada. She moved to St.Paul Minnesota circa 1856/1857 and lived there many years. She died on 2 July 1918 at her son's home in Spokane, Washington.

My problem: Where was Anna Maria born and who were her parents? I think she came from South West Germany because many who emigrated to Berlin/Kitchener Ontario seemed to come from that region. Her husband and his parents came from Dühren, Kreis Sinsheim, Baden, but in 1834.
Webmaster's Note: You do not state the religion. For Dühren, Kreis Sinsheim there are Catholic, Evangelische and Jewish records on microfilm.

CRAWFIS, Gary
eMail adddress: gcrawfis@wcoil.com

Researching Nicholas CRAWFIS (Jr.), born in Baden, Germany on 17 October 1774, died 15 December 1825 in Berne Township, Fairfield Co., Ohio. Possible German spellings of the name include CRAFFUS, GRAFFIUS, GRAFFHAUS, GRAPHUS, and KRAFFUS. In 1783 or 1784, he came with his parents to America. His wife, Mary Magdaline "Polly" MC ELROY died in Blanchard Township, Putnam Co., Ohio in 1845. His father's name was also Nicholas CRAWFIS; his mother's name is unknown. No information is known about his father, other than he was a school teacher and was born in Germany. It is believed that he died in Hampshire County Virginia between 1798 and 1800.
Webmaster's Note: Two other possible transliterations (permanent spelling changes) of your surname might be GRAFFIS and GRAFFIUS. A Graffis family was in Pennsylvania in 1749 - see microfilm #1321178, item 13). Many Germans that emigrated to America in the 18th century were "Hessian" troops that stayed in America after the America Revolution. Check HETRINA for your surname spellings. Others than came during this period were so-called "Palatines" from the Palatinate near Baden. You might contact the nearest Palatines to America chapter to you.

DERNER, Ann LANGENDORFER
365 Stoney Bottom Road, Front Royal, Virginia 22630-5638

I am seeking information on Jacob Fredrick LANGENDORFER, born 3 July 1837 at Oberacker, Baden, Germany. On 29 September 1864 he married Katherina Margaret Sophia BENDER, born 4 April 1841 at Eschelbach, Germany. I would like to know the parents of Jacob and their vital dates. Katherina's father's name was Georg Michael Bender. I would like to know her mother's maiden name and any other available information. I do not have eMail.
Webmaster's Note: You do not state the religion. There is an Ortsippenücher published in 1970 for Oberacker on FHL microfilm #1440784, item 1 as well as Evangelische church records. Eschelbach has both Catholic and Evanglische church records on microfilm.

FELLMAN, Louise
416 8th Street, North East, Staples, Minnesota 56479-3015
Email address: lfellman@alpha.brainerd.net

I am researching Joseph FELLMAN and his wife, Anna ?, both born circa 1814 in Baden. The name was originally thought to be FELLMANN; an "n" was dropped when family emigrated to the U.S. Their children were: Charles, born 1849, and Ludwig born 1850 at Baden. The family emigrated to the U.S. 1870-1877 and settled in Goodhue County Minnesota. Abraham FELLMAN, believed to be a brother of Joseph FELLMAN, was born 3 Jun 1815 at Bruhl, Schwetzingen, Baden, Germany and came to the U.S. in 1852, first to Chicago, Illinois, then to Elgin, Illinois and then in 1859 to Goodhue County, Minnesota.

In the 1880 census, Joseph and Anna FELLMAN were living in Goodhue County Minnesota. Also living in the household were Eva FELLMAN, age 17, and Jake FELLMAN, age 16. In the 1885 census of Goodhue County I also found, living together, Jacob FELLMAN, born in Baden circa 1856 and Kate FELLMAN, born circa 1840 in Baden. Were they related to Joseph FELLMAN? Regarding religion, in the USA they belonged to the Methodist Episcopal Church, both family heads being Deacons of their church. Ludwig and Barbara SCHNEIDER were married in the same faith. My father-in-law said they were "die-hard" Methodists. I'm looking for any information on the FELLMAN families in this query.
Webmaster's Note: Strong Protestant descendants in the USA infer Evangelische in Baden. For Brü:hl microfilm of Evangelische parish records (1808-1863) are available and should be checked for possible family members. Sometimes it is the line of a cousin that eventually leads you to answers to your own line. You might also spend a few dollars to have the IGS check for Fellman telephone listings in Brü:hl and other towns in that Kreis, just on the off chance some of Fellman family descendants still live there and may have done their genealogy.

FICKLIN, Lori J.
2252 Dry Creek Court, Martinez California 94553-4958
Email address: rficklin@pacbell.net

I am researching John George GUMPERT born 1 April 1866 at Mannheim, Baden, Germany and died 22 January 1953 in Texas. John George married Otelia Ortencia / Ortillia Ortensia WILLIAMS born 22 January 1872 at Wills Point, Texas. The names of their children are unknown.

The brevity of this entry precludes detailed suggestions beyond the observation that personal effort is also needed for research success. Whatever Gumpert's religion, considerable information exists in microform on Mannheim at Salt Lake City. 18 topics with over 38 microfilm and book collections await your research efforts in the catalog of the FHL at your nearest Family History Center. You might consider starting with the Manheim civil registration records (1807-1900) that are indexed on 200 reels of microfilm.

HALL, James
eMail address: jameshall@mail.geocities.com

Researching Valentin LIPPERT born in Baden, Germany in 1787. We believe that he died at Buffalo, Erie County, New York, but current research has not confirmed this. The name of his wife is unknown. He had the following child: Joseph LIPPERT born at Dienstadt, Baden, Germany in 1814, died in 1883. He is buried at St. Bonaventure Cemetery at Allegany, Cattaraugus County, New York. He was a laborer. Joseph married Consegunda SCHMITT born at Oberleinach, Bavaria, Germany in 1821 and died in 1875. Valentin, Joseph and Consegunda emigrated to Buffalo, Erie County, New York about 1847.

Joseph and Consegunda (SCHMITT) LIPPERT had the following children: Maria born at Erie, New York circa 1848, married Frank J. WARTERS; George, born January 1850; Barbara born at Buffalo, Erie County, New York in August 1852; John J. born August 1854; Joseph Jr. born 17 January 1857; Michael Joseph born June 1859; Andrew born July 1862; and Nicholas born in New York. Any help with birth, marriages, etc. would be appreciated.

Webmaster's Note: While you make no mention of religion, the Dienstadt Catholic Kirchenbuch (1671-1900) is on microfilm reel #1044558.

ISELE, William
P.O. Box 667, Milltown, Newn Jersey 08850-0667
eMail address: T33sm@aol.com

I am researching Anton ISELE, a teacher, born 1785 in Hoflingen near Radolfzell; married Susanna ALLWEILER in 1814; died in Waldkirch near Waldshut in 1861. Susanna was born 15 Apr 1792 in Singen and died in 1853 in Waldkirch. Waldkirch is approximately 35 kilometers west of Schaffhausen. They had at least one child, also named Anton ISELE, born in 1817. Who were their parents? Where did Anton teach? Is any other information available?

WebMaster's Note: The Catholic churchbook for Waldrich in kreis Waldshut, in southern Baden (for the years 1593 to 1900) is on 7 microfilms (#0957284 - through #0957290). These can be obtained on loan for viewing at your nearest LDS Family History Center. The original churchbooks are in the Archbishop's archiv at Frieburg. In addition to the vital data (births, marriages and deaths) there is a Familienbuch (family book) dated 1864 kept by the parish priest that might be worth looking at.

JORDAN, Gwen
P.O. Box 307, Townsend, Tennessee 37882-0307
eMail address: GwenJn@aol.com

(Catholic)

I am researching Mary BENDER, born 1806 in Baden, Germany; married Francis BRAUN / BROWN from Bay, Germany. Francis BRAUN was born in Bayern, Germany in 1801. Both Mary and Francis died in Lancaster, Ohio in 1879. They were Catholic. Their children were: Magdaline, George, Levina / Lavina, and Francis. I need information on parents of Mary Bender and Francis Braun, date of their marriage, and when they emigrated to the U.S.

Webmaster's Note: Is your "Bay" an abbreviation for Bayern = Bavaria? We know of no place of origin in Baden or elsewhere in Germany named Bay

KINLEY, John A.
eMail address: jakinley@worldnet.att.net

I am researching Martin KUEHNLE (later KINLEY) born 1823, died 1900, and Luise REIB born 1833 at Babstadt, Germany, died 1906. They came to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania from Baden circa 1850, married in Pittsburgh, and spent the rest of their lives there. We have baptism information on REIB in Babstadt back several generations (DEUSEL, WILSER, MELSHEIMER, WALDKNEDIT) and would like to add more data. I also am looking for connections with the KUEHNLE family (presumably from the same area) and also the children of Martin and Luis (REIB) KUEHNLE / KINLEY.
Webmaster's Note: Without knowing the probable religion of your ancestors, it is impossible to be specific. However there are both Evangelische and Jewish vital records for Babstadt on FHL microfilm.

KUNK, Vincent P.
73-070 San Nicholas Avenue, Palm Desert, California 92260-2857
eMail address: spurnel@worldnet.att.net

I am seeking information on Andrew KUNKLER and his sister Cressentia Kunkler who immigrated from Unter Glottertal, Baden to America in the 1840's. Also their relationship with Seraphim Kinkler.
Webmaster's Note: While no no microfilm seems to exist for that location, you might consider checking the reference to Daniel Kunkler (born 1719 in Switzerland) on FHL microfilm #1598022, item #1. During that era some Swiss were emigrating north into Baden and elsewhere en route to Amrica.

LUCHNER, H.S.
Email address: Roshanfamlink@entercomp.com

(Catholic)

Researching George LUCHNER, born 1825 in Westphalan, Baden, Germany; came to New York in approximately 1852; married Magdalena BELSER / BEISER in 1852 in New York; and died 9 May 1895 in Burlington, Iowa. George was Roman Catholic. Magdalena was born 23 September 1832 in Baden, Germany, came to New York in 1852, and died 2 March 1917 in Burlington, Iowa. Magdalena was believed to have been Roman Catholic. Their children (all born and died in Burlington, Iowa) were: Wilhelmina, born 1855, died 1938; George Edward, born 1857; Amelia, born 1858, died 1946; Bertha, born 1860, died 1937; Henry W., born 1860, died 1898; and Ida, born 1872, died 1954. I would like to find the exact birthplaces, birthdates, parents, and siblings (or any other information) of George and Magdalena.

Webmaster Note: While "Westphalan" may well have existed as a place of origin in Baden, it is just one vowel away from the name of another province - Westpfalen (Westphalia). I cane find no place called Westphalen in Baden. None is in my 1892 Gazetteer or my 1993 German Auto Atlas or the LDS Family History Library Catalog (FHLC) on CD-ROM. That makes it either very tiny or more likely mis-named or mis-read in your document. This is no big deal and often ocurrs in German genealogy. The closest I can come to that placename in Baden is Westhofen. Is that possible?

PANKENIER, Ellen
24432 South Meteor Court, Sun Lakes, Arizona 85248-7787
Email address: Epankenier@aol.com

(Lutheran)

I am researching Edward ENGELBACH, born 21 April 1838 in Baden, son of Frederick ENGELBACH and Charlotte (MANGHER) ENGELBACH, also born in Baden. Edward ENGELBACH emigrated to the U.S. in 1854. He married Emma BEYER about 1858 and died 1 February 1912 at Jersey City, New Jersey. Edward ENGELBACH must have been an apprentice watchmaker in Baden, because by the time he was 22, he owned his own watchmaker shop. Emma BEYER was born Febuary 1841 in NJ and died 21 July 1901 at Brooklyn, New York. Emma was the daughter of William BEYER, born Hesse-Darmstadt, and Doris KRAUS / KRASS born Germany.

The children of Edward and Charlotte (MANGHER) ENGELBACH were: Edward Jr. born 10 September 1859 at Chicago, Illinois, married Amelia KEMPH / KAMPF 6 July 1880 in New York, died 26 April 1951 at Brooklyn, New York; Charles born January 1866 in Tennessee, died 30 December 1907 at Brooklyn, New York; Frank born July 1869 at Chicago, Illinois, died 1870; Florance born September 1874 in New Jersey, married James Keeley 1896 at Brooklyn, New York, died about 1956 on Long Island, New York; Minerva born January 1877 at Brooklyn, New York, married Henry WITZENBERGER about 1905, died about 1954 on Long Island, New York; and Theodore born June 1880 at Brooklyn, NY, married Augusta KROTHA about 1923, died 24 March 1943 at East Meadow, New York. The entire family was Lutheran.

PELICAN, Jacqueline
eMail address: MaxPel84@aol.com

I am searching for parents and siblings of Gustava ZILLY or VON ZILLY. He was born in Baden in March 1842. He emigrated to the U.S. in 1865. He lived at Newark, New Jersey where he married Justine D. BAIER born in Wuerttemberg on 18 July 1869. I think they married at the First Germany Presbyterian Church at Newark, New Jersey. They had at least nine children.

PITTMAN, Charlotte
eMail address: AZdoody@aol.com

I have done some research on Franz Joseph SCHERER born 25 February 1799 at Neustadt, Hochschwarzwald, Baden, and his wife, Walburga BRUDER born 11 October 1810 in Neustadt and related lines. Lines go back to 1705 or 1630 (depending on the line). I would like to know if there is a history of the Neustadt area written in English that I could obtain. As my family was there for so long with so many different lines, I would love to know about the area. All research was done on FHL films, Catholic Church records, and family books. Other surnames involved are: STROBEL, GREINER, WURTH, GANTER, WOLLER, HOFMAYER, FURDERER, IMBERI, and KALTENBACH.

SHONTZ, Tom
615 Bellwood Avenue, Monroeville, Pennsylvania 15146-3913, USA
eMail address: Tomshontz@aol.com

I am researching George SCHWAN born 19 February 1816 at Schriesheim, Baden, Germany; married Anna Maria RIEHL on 12 April 1840 at Schriesheim. George was the son of Johannes George SCHWAN born circa 1783 and Elisabetha REILAN from Neckerhausen. Johannes was the son of Philipp SCHWANN born circa 1760 and Anna Margaretha LUTHERANA of Schriesheim. Anna Maria RIEHL was born 1812 in Ladenburg, Baden, Germany. The children of George and Anna Maria (RIEHL) SCHWAN were Eva Catherine born circa 1844; Christop born circa 1846; and George C. born 25 June 1851.

I am also searching for the ancestors of Conrad HILGENBERG born 11 January 1827 in Germany, died 29 December 1908 at North Braddock, Allegheny Co., Pennsylvania and his wife, Anna WENDEROTH born circa 1825 in Germany, died 24 December 1899 at Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. They may have been from Melsungen where both family names are on record, but no intermarriages. There is a Hilgenberg Castle in the area, but the family connection has not been made. Conrad and Anna were married about 1850 in Hesse Kassel and emigrated to America shortly afterwards. All of the following children were born in the U.S.: John born 1851; Lewis Conrad born 10 January 1853; Mary Anna born 4 February 1855; Margaret born 1856; Conrad born 1860, died 1875; and Ann Elizabeth born 22 February 1865.
Webmaster's Note: 3 references to Schwan surname genealogy exist in the FHLC (Family History Library Catalog). You should check the 1980 book by Ferdinand F. Faber that includes the Schwan line at Urach, Baden (FHL microfilm #1183572, item 11). If that proves promising, FHL microfilm of 2 collections of Catholic church records for Urach span 1619-1876. You make no reference to religion, but there are Lutheran, Reformed and Catholic church records on FHL microfilm for Nekarhausen, Baden. There are 5 FHLC references to the Riehl surname - two from Canada.

WELTER, Arlene
3701 Par Road, Sebring, Florida 33872-1224, USA
Email address: rconnell@strato.net

I am researching Peter Henry SPIESS, born in Baden in 1823. He emigrated to the U.S. between 1846 and 1848. I would like to know when and what ship. Peter lived in Cook County Illinois in 1854 where he filed his intent to petition. He was naturalized in LaSalle County Illinois in 1860. He was a doctor and a farmer. He died in 1862 or 1863 and is buried at Somonauk, Illinois. I am trying to find the cemetery. He married Elizabeth Schnitzer and had four children: Lisette born in 1850 (no information after 1860 census); Anna born 1855, died in 1921 in Chicago as Anna PALM; Peter Henry born in 1859 and died in 1929 in Will County, Illinois; and Louise born in 1862 and died in 1928 as Louise MOODY at Chicago. I would like more information on Louise and Anna and Louise's two daughters.

WICHTEL, Arthur E.

I am researching the ancestry of Johann LERNER, born 1816, died 1869. Johann operated an inn at Bamlach, Kreis Lorrach, Baden. His spouse was Madalena Maria FREILING. Their known children were: Leo, born 1838, died 1915; and Ludwig, born and died 1840. Leo married Franziska WOHLSCHLAG and they had 11 children. The surnames of some of the married daughters were: WENK, HEILIG, and HERRLEIN. Johann LERNER had two brothers: Anton and Joseph. The family were Catholics.
Webmaster's Note: Bamlach Catholic church records (1640-1900) are found on 3 reels of FHL microfilm.
