I am looking for information on John SCHAMBURGER (SHANBERGER in Germany), born in Baden in 1813 and his wife, Elizabeth HECKERT born in Hessen-Cassel in 1819. They emigrated to Arkansas in 1833. Their children (all born in Arkansas) were: Louisa born in 1842; George W. SCHAMBURGER born in 1845, died in Civil War 7 May 1862; John SCHAMBURGER born in 1847; Elisabeth born in 1849; Catharine born in 1851; and Margaret born in 1854. I am having difficulty locating an article written by Ruth RECTOR. Everytime I locate this relative in a reference book, it refers to the article, "Auswanderer nach Arkansas (USA)" in Hessische Familienkunde, vol. 16:2 (June 1982), cols. 117-122. Any suggestions where I might locate this magazine and article? I have tried the Salt Lake LDS Library and local libraries.

(Protestant)

Trying to locate the ancestral village and information about the family of Jacob SCHELL born 27 June 1826 or 1827 in Kreis Heidelberg. He was the son of Petter SCHELL. He served in the regular army from 1848 to 1852. After that time, he left Baden for America, settling in Western New York State (Genesee, Erie and Wyoming counties). He married Louisa DESGRANGES in 1853. In 1866 the family moved to Waverly, Iowa where they resided the rest of their lives. Jacob was Protestant. I am also trying to find additional information on the FALLER and KUSS families of Neukirch, Hoch Schwarzwald, Baden, Germany. Anton FALLER born 7 November 1834 at Neukirch, Germany (son of Johann Chrisostomus FALLER and Barbara KUPFERRER) and Franziska KUSS born 9 March 1845 at Neukirch (daughter of Josef KUFF, clockmaker, and Franziska ROMBACH) left Baden in 1870, settling in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan (Eagle River, Phoenix, Lake Linden, and Beacon Hill). Anton's siblings were: Ludwig FALLER, born 1829, died 1877 in New York; Lukas FALLER, born 1830, died 1909 at Furtwangen, Baden; Paulina, born 1832; Theresa, born and died in 1833; Katharina, born 1836, died 1843; and Hieronimus FALLER, born 1848, died at Neustadt, Baden.

MAURATH, John L.

eMail address: conlaeth@juno.com

Felix MAURATH was born 20 May 1815 in the northwestern Black Forest (Schwarzwald) village of Unzhurst. Unzhurst is such a small village that it is now part of the town of Ottersweier. Unzhurst is old German for "our forest." Felix first came to Cleveland, Ohio in 1833 when he was 18 years old, and was in St. Louis, Missouri by 1842. In that interim, he supposedly married a girl by the name of JACOB from Lothringen, and they had a son named Denis, born in 1840, who was killed in the Civil War. His wife died, and Felix married her sister, Josephine JACOB (born 1825) around 1845. From St. Louis, they moved to Millstadt, Illinois in 1864, where they died in 1897 and 1907, respectively. I'd like to know which port Felix left from in Europe, and which port he landed at in America. I'd also like to know his first wife's name and where and when they were married, and where Denis was born.

I am researching Jacob HOFFMAN born 23 April 1826 in Baden, married Barbara HEILMAN about 1853 in Germany, died 7 February 1881 in Stephenson County, Illinois. Barbara HEILMAN was born in Germany and died 7 June 1874. She is buried in Gund Cemetery, east of Freeport, Illinois. Their children were Elizabeth, born at Hockenheim, Baden, Germany 10 Apr 1853, married Adam George CHRISTMAN 12 Mar 1871 at Freeport, Illinois, died 23 January 1938 at Shannon, Illinois; Mary Anna born about 1860; John born about 1862; Louis born about 1865; and Catherine born about 1866.

Adam George CHRISTMAN was born 28 August 1843 at Nerzwiler, Beyer, Germany and he died 20 Februry 1934 at Shannon, Illinois. He was the son of George Adam CHRISTMAN and Mary Elizabeth GROSS who were married 22 September 1832 in Germany. George Adam died soon after Adam's birth and he and his mother came to the U.S. alone as far as I know. Mary Elizabeth was the daughter of Christine and Philippinne Lang GROSS who were from the same area in Germany as far as I know. According to family information, Mary Elizabeth was born 1 May 1814 at Nertzwiler, Germany); Note: Dates were estimated from census.

I am searching for Gustave (Gustavus) WEBER, born circa 1819, who came to the U.S. with his wife, Louisa WEITZENEGGER; father, Frederick WEBER; stepmother, Louise STUTZ WEBER; half-sister, Mina (Wilhelmina?) WEBER; and step-brother, Frederick STUTZ. They sailed from LeHavre on the Steamship Athens and arrived in New Orleans 12 Jun 1850. Gustave was from Karlsruhe, Baden (noted on his child's birth certificate which he signed) and his wife, Louisa, was from Ralstatt (listed on her death certificate which Gustave signed). The family was Lutheran. Any help finding the marriage or births of Gustave WEBER and Louisa WEITZENEGGER would be appreciated.
Webmaster's Note: The Karlsruhe churchbook records with 17 record collections is where to look for Gustave and his line. Without a religion specified, it is now possible to be more specific. Then there is the 182 listings of Weber and 9 for Stutz in the "Surname Search" section of the 17th CD-ROM edition of the FHL Catalog. There also is an emigration list on FHL microfilm for Baden.

You might also gain new information from Die Ahnenstammkartei des Deutschen Volkes on FHL microfilm - a three step process.

I am researching the surname SINGLER, but the information I have is very sketchy because a SINGLER husband and wife died the same day when my ancestor, James P. SINGLER, was very young. James P. SINGLER was born in the Neponset section at Dorchester, Massachusetts (Boston area) in 1887. He was one of 14 children of Joseph SINGLER and Mary McCLOSKEY SINGLER. James married Elizabeth M. CLARK circa 1913 in St. Ambrose Church in Fields Corner section at Dorchester. Joseph was a contractor. Elizabeth M. CLARK was born circa 1894 at Dorchester, Massachusetts.

They had two daughters: Dorothy Elizabeth born 30 Aug 1920, married Paul JACOBS; and Marie born circa 1916, married ____ CONWAY. These daughters are both still living. It is not known where the father of James, Joseph SINGLER, was born, but I believe Joseph's parents were born in Baden-Baden. To the best of my knowledge, this family was Catholic. I would like to hear from any SINGLERS who may have a connection to this family. My goal is to be able to fill in the missing pieces between the family in Baden and the family in America.
Webmaster's Note: Goto the "Suggestions" link below and follow the first three suggestions given there. If they do not end up providing the information you need, I recommend you consider enlisting the services of a professional genealogist who has Baden experience- for example someone like Trudy Schenk, who is listed on this website. She has a Baden database she is building.

I am searching for information on Franz Anton WEINMANN, born 1808 in either Baden-Baden or Rheinsheim, Baden. He married Maria Theresa BAUER in 1833 at Rheinsheim at the local Catholic church. They had eight children in Rheinsheim. The family was in Erie County, New York by 1840. They later settled in Casco, Wisconsin. Maria Theresa BAUER'S family is in the IGI (LDS International Genealogical Index) back into the 1600s, but Franz Anton WEINMANN is the only one of his family in the IGI. Family tradition is that he was from Baden-Baden, but the IGI information has him born in Rheinsheim. The name was changed from WEINMANN to WYMAN when they arrived in this country.
