I am looking for the Baden place of origin of John and Philip BAHR or BÄR or BAER. Both served in the U.S. Civil War. The wife of John had to fight the government to get a pension. John commited suicide by jumping in a well with iron tied to his leg as he was suffering from a "mental condition" brought on by his accidentally killing his oldest son with a backhoe. Both became successful farmers and there is a depressing story of someone absconding with the family Bible. The name appears with many different spellings in documentation. I've scanned passenger lists, German church and civil records, contacted all known relatives, and all the other common efforts. Information on the brothers is as follows:

John BÄHR / BAEHR / BÄR / BAER, born 18 July 1837, married Anna Philippina Marguretha VAN STRAATEN on 3 Jun 1861 in Calloway County, Missouri. Anna was born 21 February 1839 at Keeken, Kleve and was the daughter of Heinrich Otto VAN STRAATEN and Johanna Marie GRAAFEN / GRAVEN. Their children were: Johann Georg Heinrich born 1862, died as a child; Anna born 1866, married Rudolph ALLGEYER; William born 1867, married Ida HOLTWICK; John born 1870, married Anne HOLTWICK; Elizabeth born 1874, married Charles BECKMAN; Emma born 1875, married Hugo LENSING; Christina born 1876, married Henry STOCK; and Ida born 1883, married Samuel WRAY.

Phillip BÄHR / BAEHR / BÄR / BAER, born 3 September 1831, married Dorothea VAN STRAATEN on 1 March 1867. Dorothea was born 22 December 1849 and was the daughter of Heinrich Otto VAN STRAATEN and Johanna Marie GRAAFEN / GRAVEN (and the sister of Anna Philippina Marguretha above). Phillip was naturalized in 1866 and renounced allegiance to the "Duke of Baden." He was in the German military. His father may have been John. Their children were: Otto born 1867, married Wilhemina EGGART; August born 1868, married Mary Louise LAVY; Fred or Fritz born 1871, married Louisa THEIS; Mary Elizabeth born 1873, married William CRASS; Laura born 1876, married Ben Franklin POE. Phillip BAHR/BAR/BAER married his second wife Mary THEIS in 1881. Their children were: Phillip Jr. and George (both never married) and Henry who married Daisy BLACKWELL (no children).
Webmaster's Note: Of the 16 listings for BAHR in the surname search section of the FHL Catalog, record #10 is a book by Hazel NICE HASSEN published in 1994 (400 pages, printed at Goshen Indiana, possibly self-published, titled Six Families of Joe Daviess County Illinois...) that includes the genealogy of a Johannes BÄHR born in Baden in 1790. It is not on microfilm, but as letter to the FHL might produce the address of the author.

Your surnames may also appear in Die Ahnenstammkartei des Deutschen Volkes on FHL microfilm - a three step process. Be sure to check for them in the LDS Ancestral File too.

BREITNER, Sandy
eMail address: Kay5953@aol.com

I am researching Peter BREITNER, born in Baden, Germany about 1827, died in 1887 at Petersburg, Michigan. In the 1870 Federal census, he was living at Riga, Michigan. Peter married 1) Amelia HEINSMAN (marriage date and place unknown). Amelia was also born in Baden, Germany. Their children were: Fanny born circa 1858; John born June 1859; Mary born circa 1861; Peter born April 1862; Martin born 9 August 1865; Anna born circa 1867; and Frederick born circa 1870. Peter married 2) Louisa DETSSOUR on 1 April 1875. Louisa was born in Baden, Germany in 1846. Their children were: Franklin born 25 Jun 1876; Francis; Anton born June 1875; Charles born October 1879; and Sophia born November 1882. As far as I know, all children were born in Michigan.

GANG, Carolyn

(Roman Catholic)

I am seeking information on George GENG, born 11 March 1826 at Unteralpsen, Baden, Germany. I believe George to be the illegitimate son of Magdalena GENG who was born 19 July 1789 in Unteralpsen and died 17 September 1827. I am basing this on some Catholic church records of the area (if I translated them correctly). George GENG was involved in the Karlruhr uprising in 1848. As a result, he was put in a military prison about 1850. He was released and forced to leave the country. He left from LaHavre, France on the ship "Splendid" or "Splending" sometime between 1850 and 1853. George made his way from New York City to Cincinnati, Ohio where he married Katharina SCHEUBLE or SCHIEBLE 6 Februry 1854. She was also born at Unteralpsen 24 November 1827. I believe she is the daughter of Conrad SCHEUBLE and Ursula SCHLACHER. I cannot find any documentation on how Katharina emigrated from Baden to the U.S. I feel certain that George and Katherina knew each other in Baden. I would like to find her on a passenger list. Also, how do I obtain a copy of information, such as a passenger list, about the ship "Splendid" or "Splending" that sailed from LaHavre, France, such as the ship passenger list?
Webmaster's Note: While not a Ship Passenger List specialist, I do not belive that the Le Havre records have ever been microfilmed. I have heard of only one case when such a search was attemped, without success, by a Swiss professional with French language skills. It is possible that a French genealogist or recrod searcher in or near La Havre exists, but we do not know of one. You might place a query on the soc.genealogy.french Usenet newsgroup and find one that way. If you do, please let us know about it.

HAAS, W. L.
eMail address: jewlhaas@aol.com

I am researching Julius HAAS born 15 October 1863 and died 20 July 1925 at Alton, Illinois. He is listed at Pforzheim, Germany and worked as a butcher when he departed at age 17 for the U.S. on the "SS Main" ship that arrived at New York on 30 May 1879. He married Harriett CHESSEN on 13 January 1884 at Alton, Illinois. Harriett CHESSEN was born 18 June 1864 at Alton, IL and died 2 January 1951. The children of Julius HAAS and Harriett CHESSEN HAAS were:
1. William Kasper HAAS born 19 May 1886 and died 15 April 1937 at Alton, Illinois. He married Julia Elizabeth RINGERING in Alton, IL. Julia lived until she was in her 90's. William Kasper worked at his father's company (Haas Meatpacking Company) at Alton. They had 6 children who all lived at Alton, IL. All the children have died. Julia Elizabeth was the daughter of Antoine RINGERING who was born in 1839, came to the U.S. from Germany, and died at Alton, IL in 1904. He married Louisa BERGER born 21 October 1866, died 2 November 1946 at Alton, IL (her parents were Henry BERGER and Catherine PILGRIM). I have wondered if the name RINGERING is English and not German, even though the HAAS family has always thought he came from Germany.
2. Hattie HAAS was born at Alton, Illinois and married William SUNIER at Alton.
3. Marie HAAS was born at Alton, IL and married Alfred SCHWEGEL at Alton, IL. Marie is still living in a nursing home in Alton.
4. Helen HAAS born 23 November 1906, married David COLEMAN. Both still live at Alton, Illinois.
Although Marie and Helen are still living in Alton, IL, they are unable to provide any other family history.
Webmaster's Note: Considerable FHL microfilm exists for Pforzheim, Baden - 3 topiucs, 12 collections.

HABERSTROH, Bob
Bonn, Germany
eMail address: rhaberst@alumni.princeton.edu

(Lutheran)

According to German records, Ferdinand HABERSTROH, born 12 October 1827, and his brother Christian Gottlieb HABERSTROH, born 15 August 1842, emigrated from the town of Duerrn in Baden, Germany, to the U.S. in 1869. They were the sons of Ferdinand HABERSTROH (1800-1877) and Karoline (ENGEL) HABERSTROH (1799-1876). Ferdinand emigrated with the consent of his wife, Christine (STAMM) HABERSTROH, born 19 August 1842, who remained in Duerrn. The family was Lutheran. I'm interested in finding descendants of this family in the U.S.

I suspect that Christian Gottlieb HABERSTROH, born 8 June 1868 at Duerrn, Baden, Germany and his wife, Wilhelmina HOFSAESS, born 5 December 1865 at Duerrn, Baden, Germany, emigrated to America. They married 13 September 1890 in a Lutheran ceremony in Duerrn. Christian Gottlieb HABERSTROH was the son of Johann (1844-1894) and Karolina (HABERSTROH) HABERSTROH (1830-1914). Wilhelmina was the daughter of Jakob and Barbara (GOSSENBERGER) HOFSAESS. I'm interested in finding their descendants.

According to German records, Karl Friedrich HABERSTROH (born 11 November 1860), his brother, Johann Jakob Elias HABERSTROH (born 20 July 1857), and their parents, Gottlieb HABERSTROH (born 5 May 1829) and Anna Maria Barbara (MAAG) HABERSTROH, emigrated from the town of Duerrn in Baden, Germany to the U.S. in 1869. The father, Gottlieb, returned to Duerrn alone in 1870. I'm interested in finding descendants of this family in the U.S. My home page has to do with this and other cases of "lost" U.S. Haberstroh immigrants.

HOCHGESANG, Mike
Email address: mhochges@indy.net

I have traced my heritage back to Michael HOCHGESANG (called "Senior"). Jasper, Indiana Library records (including 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880 U.S. census) indicate that he was born about 1820 (based on age) in Bavaria, Germany. One of the four census records, however, indicates origin as Baden as opposed to Bavaria. There is another Michael HOCHGESANG (called "Junior") even though his father's name was Andreas William HOCHGESANG) with family tree that anchors back to Andreas HOCHGESANG from Lebenhan, Bavaria. Andreas HOCHGESANG was born 30 November 1784 and died 8 April 1863. He married Martina BENKERT on 12 Jan 1813. He arrived in America Aug 1848. Other cities in the tree are Unsleben, Wollback, Salle and Rodelmaier (all in Bavaria). Map research seems to indicate that these towns are or were in the current Bad Neustadt, Germany area (is that correct?). Michael HOCHGESANG Senior was a farmer and Michael HOCHGESANG Junior was a brick mason who built many of the old buildings in Jasper and southern Indiana. The two were separated by about 9 years in age. How can I find Michael HOCHGESANG Seniors family in Germany?

HYER, Diane
eMail address: tidefriend@aol.com

I am researching Charles SCHREMPP born in Baden, Germany, came to the U.S. in the late 1800's, died 14 May 1934 in San Francisco, California. He is buried in Deming, New Mexico. Charles married Anselina AVEITA. According to the Federal census, she was born in Mexico and so were her parents. Story has it that Anselina ran off with someone named LEAHY who was in law enforcement at El Paso, Texas. My grandmother Elvita / Elsie denies that Anselina and her parents were Mexican and says that they were Irish. My grandmother will not talk about her life as a child. Charles SCHREMPP worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad. He worked from 1 September 1899 to 1 July 1933. We think he came in through Ellis Island. The children of Charles and Anselina (AVEITA) SCHREMPP were: 1) Charles SCHREMPP (never married). 2) Elvita / Elsie SCHREMPP born (we think) 12 March 1906. Her name is Elvita on the 1910 US census and Elsie on the 1920 US census. 3) Joseph Benjamin SCHREMPP born 19 August 1909, baptised 13 December 1909. I have been trying for several years to find any information on this man. My grandmother never saw him after her father's death. I think all of the children were born in the Deming, New Mexico area.

KANALEY, Joseph

(Roman Catholic)

I am looking for information on my great-grandfather, Anton HARTMAN (HARTMANN), and his place of birth in Baden, Germany. I have his birth date (from death certificate) as 4 June 1859. Supposedly, Anton and a brother emigrated to the United States, but I'm not positive as to the year. Anton's father was also Anton HARTMANN and his mother was Mary REICHT. I think they stayed in Baden and I would like information as to where in Baden they lived. The younger Anton settled in Wisconsin and married Eva Marie MAY. They were living in Dodge Co., Wisconsin when their children were born. The family were Roman Catholics.

OEDY, Richard

(Roman Catholic)

I am researching Johann Michael ODEN / ÖDEN, shoemaker at Mudau, Baden, Germany, born about 1788, married Barbara WEBER on 15 July 1817 at Mudau. (For unkown reasons the father, Johann Michael, dropped the "N" off the surname of his sons). Their children were: 1) Franz Barthel ÖDE / OEDE, shoemaker at Mudau, born 29 March 1821, emigrated to US in 1851. 2) Johann Michael ÖDE / OEDE, shoemaker in Mudau, born 15 February 1823 at Mudau, married: A) Karoline Valentina ECKERT at Mudau on 18 February 1847, moved to Weisloch, Baden, Germany on 14 June 1847. They attended St. Laurentius Catholic Church there. They had a child Bertha born 24 December 1848. Johann married B) Victoria NEIDIG of Horrenberg on 18 October 1849. They had a daughter Magdalena who was born 31 August 1850. The family emigrated to America on 13 April 1851 and arrived in New York on 7 June 1851.

I am also looking for ancestors of Franz ÖDE / OEDE born April 1821 in Baden (city unknown). Franz was an unmarried shoemaker and a Catholic parish member. He emigrated to America 13 April 1851, arriving at New York on 7 June 1851. I am unable to provide descendancy information for those people in the U.S. I do not have an email address, but can be contacted by phone or through my mailing address (postage will be reimbursed).
Webmaster's Note: The Katholische Kirche Mudau churchbook (1660-1903) is on 8 FHL microfilm reels. In addition to baptism, confirmation, marriage and death records, it contains family registers and an index ("bruderschaftsbücher") on FHL film #1049537. There are 4 listings for Neidig in the "Surname Search" section of the 17th CD-ROM edition of the Salt Lake City FHL Catalog. Your unique surnames may also appear in Die Ahnenstammkartei des Deutschen Volkes on FHL microfilm - a three step process and worth it if you have exhausted other sources. Be sure to list them in the LDS Ancestral File and look there too.

REDMAN, Mark W.

I am researching Felix HABERSTROH born 1815 in Baden, Germany, emigrated to the U.S. about 1837, died 1 December 1900 at Hatfield, Warrick County, Indiana. Felix married 1) Thriza FRISBEE on 11 September 1842. Thriza was born about 1822 and died about 1844 in Indiana. No known children of this marriage. Felix married 2) Sarah (Sally) MITCHELL on 29 April 1844. Sarah was born 22 September 1826. Their children were: Lumbartis Frisbee MITCHELL born about 1847; William Frank MITCHELL born 30 September 1848; John H. MITCHELL born 26 September 1851; Joseph R. MITCHELL born 8 March 1853; Mary Caroline MITCHELL born 15 Apr 1856, married William REDMAN (born March 1850), died 1925; Rose (Rosa) M. MITCHELL born 16 June 1857; and Alice MITCHELL born about 1861.

ROY, Frank
eMail address: froy@erols.com

(Roman Catholic)

I am researching Gregory RAPP and Ellie KEIME. I am assuming that the Gregor RAPP on the FHC IGI is the same person. He was Catholic and had the 16 Nov 1835 birth date that was on the death certificate I obtained from the Ohio Historical Society. My grandmother's death certificate listed her father as Gregory RAPP and her mother as Ellie KIMEY. After doing telephone white page searches, I only found a few KIMEYs in the U.S. and none in Europe or the United Kingdom. Gregor RAPP's father is listed as Dominikus and his mother as Klara DREHER. They are listed as Katholisch from Beuren Ueberlingen, Konstanz, Baden.

SEITZ, David
eMail address: dseitz@magnus1.com

I am researching George F. SEITZ, born circa 1794 near Karlsruhe, Baden, Germany. He emigrated to Detroit, Michigan with his wife, Sophia BOLZ, and several of their children. Sophia was born about December 1802 in Germany. Their children were:
1) John Henry born 24 August 1831 in Baden-on-the-Rhine, Germany, married Mary CHOPE who was born in 1842. They had one child, Charles H. born May 1866 at Detroit, Michigan. All died at Detroit, Michigan. 2) C. Louise SEITZ, born 1827 in Germany, married George M. STAUCH.
3) Christina SEITZ born 1830 in Germany.
4) Frederick Louis SEITZ born 1835 at Baden-on-the-Rhine, Germany, married Anna FINDLEY and they had four children.
5) Melvina J. SEITZ married Emmet E. PORTER.

WESNER, Gerald F.
Glen Mills, Pennsylvania, USA
eMail address: debjer@prodigy.net

(Roman Catholic?)

I have traced my family surname back to my great-great-grandfather, Charles Fredrick WOESNER. According to an obituary in the 5 February 1877 New Orleans Times-Picayune, he was born in May 1827 in "Cantern," Baden, Germany. It also states that he died on 4 February 1877 in New Orleans and was a resident of the United States for 26 years. Since I cannot locate a town in Baden called "Cantern," I assume the town is really "Kandern." His wife was Rosina MEHRFIN and they had four children, all of whom were born in Louisiana; Charles Jr., Caroline, Anne and Louis. I know that Charles Frederick WOESNER lived for awhile (1870 Federal census) at Mobile, Alabama. I do not know for sure, but I believe that he was Catholic. I would now like to begin researching in Kandern, Baden, but I have no idea how to approach this task. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who can offer their experiences or suggestions.

WILHELM, Candace M.
eMail address: adwcmw@aol.com

(Lutheran)

I am researching John WILHELM born 6 October 1821 in Germany and settled at Connellsville, PA in the late 1840's. He married Anna Maria HETZEL (HEZEL), daughter of Johann Jacob HETZEL and Catherine SWARTZ from Muehlheim / Bach, Wuerttemburg, Germany. John and Anna Maria (HETZEL) WILHELM were Lutheran. They helped found St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church at Connellsville, PA. The pastor of the church was H.J.H. LEMCKE. I would be interested in finding the early records of this church--they seem to be missing. John and Anna Maria WILHELM had the following children: Catherine born 1851, married Thomas P. BOYD; Elizabeth born 1852, married George ENOS; Lena born 1855, married Albert NEVILLE; John Henry born 1857, married Mary Hannah STRICKLER; Jennie born 1861, married William EVERLY; and Bertha born 1865 and was unmarried at her death. On the 1860 Federal census of Pennsylvania John WILHELM stated that he was from Frankfurt. A naturalization record says that he came from Hesse Darmstadt. I would like to confirm the correct place. It has been said that John WILHELM came to the U.S. to meet his father. I would be interested in knowing anything about this family and their descendants.

WIELAND, Eileen

I am trying to obtain more information on the family of my grandmother Louise GIMBLE from Thugen, Baden Germany. Louise emigrated to the United States in 1909 with her uncle Ernest GIMBLE and a cousin Rose. The parents of Louise were August GIMBLE and Elkizabeth SHUNZLIU. Did she or her parents have any siblings? I am also trying to locate Thugen and learn about another cousin, Charles Gimble who emigrated to the US about 1909. Sorry, I do not have access to the Internet.
