I am looking for information on the family of Herman L. HAGAN. According to the U.S. Federal census, he was born in Baden, Germany. A biography says that he was born in Prussia in 1813 and sailed to America in 1851. His father was H. L. HAGAN, a farmer in Prussia, who died in 1832 at 68 years old. Herman L. HAGAN married Catherine BOMCAMP, also from Prussia, on 20 October 1851 at Waukegan, Lake County, Illinois. Catherine was born in 1826 and died 24 September 1912 at Waukegan. Information also says they had one son, George, born 20 Jun 1863. I would like information on the mother, brothers and sisters of Herman L. HAGAN and village or town of his birth. I would also like the same information on BOMCAMP. I do not know when the BOMCAMPs came to the U.S. They were Catholic.

CLEMENS, Cathy

The following information is from FHL microfilm #1767907 from Klostitz, Bessarabia: Christian Wilhelm Sprecher was born in KARLSRUHE in 1782. He married Katharina Stahl on 12 Oct 1816, Margaretha Augenstein on 26 Dec 1818, and Christina Mammel on 31 Jul 1832. Two women living also in Klostitz may be his daughters. One woman was Louisa Sprecher who married Michael Dietterle on 9 Jan 1822.

The other woman was Karolina SPRECHER, born at Sulzfeld, Poland, on 8 Jun 1807. Sulzfeld may be the same as Neusalz. Karolina married Christian BUCHELE on 9 Jun 1825 and had the following children: Christina born 1 June 1826; Louisa born 5 October 1827; Margaretha born 17 August 1829; Christian born 1 January 1832; Andreas 30 May 1836; Wilhelm 15 Apr 1839; Johann Philipp born 19 May 1841; Katherina born 6 December 1843, died before 1847; Gottlieb 8 Oct 1848; and Regina born 16 Feb 1851. Christina BUCHLE (born 1 June 1826) married Paulus SCHLENKER on 22 May 1847. Christina died 9 August 1883. They had children Margaretha born 13 May 1850 and Christian 2 September 1853. Two Sprecher men lived in the neighboring town of Leipzig, Bessarabia. They were Gottfried, 1788, and Samuel, 1791, both born in Lorenzdorf, Prussia. I am trying to find family records from KARLSRUHE, Baden, and the Wroclaw, Poland, area to see if the three Sprecher men were brothers.

COLEMAN, Stuart

I am researching my gg-grandfather, Dr. William Frederick George NOETLING, born 8 Apr 1819 ? at Mannheim, Baden, Germany. He was the son of Frederick William NOETLING, M.D. and Johanna WOLFE. There were 7 children; 5 boys and 2 girls. I don't have any information on them, but would like some. I would also like to confirm birthdates, and get birthdates for his parents, and names of other ancestors. Emigration data would also be appreciated. William Frederick George NOETLING attended the Mannheim Lyceum Latin School, and at age 18, entered the University of Heidelburg (3 years) and then the University of Wuertzburg (2 1/2 years). He served as a physician at Mannheim and later at Koenigshoven. He and some friends were jailed for 4 years for treason under Kaiser Frederick III. At age 32 he emigrated to New York City. Dr. Frederick William NOETLING supposedly served as a surgeon in the army of Napoleon after the taking of Baden. Thanks for any help, and if anyone needs research in the Connecticut area, please let me know and I'll try to help.
Webmaster's Note: The Matrikel register for Heildelburg Universtät has been reprinted and is available at various research libraries in America and Europe as well as at the FHL. It should show his entrance date and city he was born in to confirm your information. In addition. many church records exist on FHL microfilm for Mannheim if you know his religion and further there was civil registration at Mannheim starting in 1807 with 206 reels on indexed films, so you should be able to locate the names and birhdates of some of his siblings.

CRAIG, Marilyn
eMail address: MCraig5060@aol.com

I am looking for information about my great-great-grandfather and his family who came to the U.S. in 1854 settling in Oswego, New York. The name on the family trunk was HIMBERLY, and the three children we discovered in orphanage records were listed in the 1855 New York state census as HIMBERLY, but they seem to have all taken the name of HIMPLE once here. They came from Baden, Germany. My great-great-grandmother died on the passage and was buried at sea; three of the children were placed in the Oswego Orphan Asylum on 10 December 1854. There were 5, possibly 6 children. One was Albert, who fought in the Civil War, enlisting in 1861 at Booneville, New York, and listing his age at 25 that year. He would have been too old for the orphanage in 1855. His muster roll record said he was born in Baden, Germany. According to the 1855 census, other children were: Bonaparte, age 11 in 1855; Simon, age 9, and Mary Ann at age 4 1/2 who only stayed in the orphanage 2 months before being taken as an indentured servant. I believe Mary Ann's birthday was 10 October 1849 because her indenture papers said she had to stay until 10 October 1867. I have given up looking for arrival lists since we do not know at what port they entered. They settled at Oswego, New York, so that is where they could have entered, but I find no lists available for that port, although it is listed as a Great Lakes port. Any help provided will be greatly appreciated.
Additional Note as of 13 November 1998: Dear Marilyn, I have had the most phenomenal response I could ever have hoped for since I posted my last message on the Baden Research List. A lady by the name of Rose Weber emailed me that the names I had entered interested her. She looked into her GEDCOM files and discovered over the course of a few days that she is the second cousin thrice removed to my great grandfather. She also had the correct name. It was NOT Himberly as we had thought, but HIMPELE. She not only had the town where they lived, but the complete family of my ancestors back to about 1600!!!! birth and death dates, names of children, the whole shebang. She even had the day that they left town to come to the US. Can you beleive it? I thought I had done well getting back to 1801 and my great-great-grandfather. She supplied me with LDS microfilm numbers and everything. (She's been researching her family for 15 years, and was born in a town 2 miles away from where all my ancestors lived!!! I just had to write and tell you this amazing story. Thank you for being here on the web and making this page possible. My goal now is to try and find out the port from which they sailed, the name of the ship, and a record of her burial at sea. Thanks again

CROUCH, Evelyn BELL
eMail address; ebcrou@network-one.com

I am searching for the parents of Leonard, August, Christian, and Herman DORN. They came into the U.S. and lived in the New Orleans, Louisiana area. Census records in Louisiana show that they were born in Baden, Germany. Any information on these brothers will be greatly appreciated.

DAY, Lawrence
eMail address: ld.flyfish@btinternet.com

I am researching Edward DORRER who was born in Baden in 1832 and emigrated to England before 1865. He settled in Chislehurst, Kent, England and married Caroline BLUNDELL. They had four children: Ann Charlotte (1867-1881); Lewis Frederick (1875-1882); Edward Charles Albert William (1865-1873); and Ernest Edward (1872-1942). Edward DORRER died in 1907 and is buried at St. Nicholas' Church, Chislehurst, Kent, England.

My great-great-grandfather was Joseph RIEGGER, born 1829. He emigrated to america, arriving at New York in 1854, then went to Wisconsin in 1857. He was married to Kunnigundie HOUSER (sp?). His brother Benedikt's Civil War papers list his town in Baden as "Zillishausen." Possible siblings are: Gabriel, Xavier and Mary. I don't know if they came to America. Any information on RIEGGERs or the Zillishausen area would be greatly appreciated.
Webmaster's Note: There is a location names Zilshausen in the Rheinland province of Germany. However no microfilm of its records or books about it exist at the FHL however.

FEHRMAN, Kathy
eMail address: Katfeh@aol.com

(Roman Catholic)

I am looking for the parents and siblings of Frank WORNER (WARNER), born 3 February 1828 at or near Heidleberg, Baden, Germany. Frank's father and brother owned a brickyard near the French/German border. Frank received part of an inheritance about 1880. He was then in Wisconsin. We believe he was Catholic. He emigrated around 1848-1850, leaving Germany because of the War. He married Magdalena ROESCH / RAISH in 1852 in New York. Magdalena's parents were Michael ROESCH and Maria FROLICH. Magdalena was born 29 May 1832 at Engelsweiss, Germany. We are looking for Frank's family. We have recently found Magdalena's family.

GERNHAUSER, Henry
eMail address: hankgern@ih2000.net

(Roman Catholic)

I am researching Casper GERNHAUSER (may be Kasper or Gaspard), born 4 April 1824 in Germany. My parents have said he was from Baden; they have also mentioned Alsace Lorraine. He was Catholic. He married Maria Anna SPOSITO of Naples, Italy November 1854 at New Orleans, Louisiana. A witness at the wedding was Vincenco Gernhauser, and a four year old daughter, Vincente, was declared. Henry died 14 August 1878 and he is buried at Chatawa, Mississippi. His son's death certificate, Joseph A. Gernhauser, states his father was from Germany; Louisiana census records and birth records of his children confirm his birthplace as Germany. Anna Maria SPOSITO (surname also seen as SPOZITO, with one son's certificate stating "born Chinquin" was born in Naples, Italy per Louisiana birth certificates of their children. Her given name shows up in various ways: Marianne, Mary Anna, etc. Anna Maria died in 1892 at San Antonio, TX, but I don't know where she is buried and I have been unable to get documentation on that.

Casper had several children that I've linked through birth and baptismal certificates: Casper, Jr. (drowned at Chatawa, Mississippi 1869; Joseph Alponse (my great-grandfather, died at New Orleans); George (died at San Antonio, TX; his son died in CO); Johannes (appears in New Orleans directory as an adult in 1886); Maria Helena (no trace). A daughter Emilie became a nun, Sister Anna Joseph GERNHAUSER; died 3 March 1934 at Covington, Lousiana. I have searched LDS records and continue to do so based on the birth records for churches and cities that indicate GERNHAUSERs are present. All of the GERNHAUSERs at New Orleans were descendants of Casper. I have found GERNHAUSERs in the following German cities from Catholic church records, but haven't been able to link to Casper: Ruffenhofen, Weiltingen, Deiningen, Ketsch; Erlenbach, Binswangen, Buhlerzell, Berlinchingen, Duelken and Gollnow.

They were Catholic. They had 8 children, all born at Fort Wayne, Indiana. Joseph FISHER died 5 April 1872 at Fort Wayne, Indiana. I am looking for his parents, brothers and sisters, and date of emigration. Other surname of interest: WOEHNKER.

His nine children were: Theresa born 30 April 1831, died 14 February 1908; Maria Eva (Mary) born 15 August 1832, died 8 February 1916, married 2) Jodakus (Jost) VOELKEL 12 June 1883; Eva (Catherine) born 21 April 1834, died 8 July 1899; Joseph born 2 November 1836, died 3 June 1883; Sebastian born 1838, died 10 May 1922; Susan; James; Charles; and Lorenzo. Data is incomplete as to who was the mother of each of the children.

I am looking for info on my great-grandfather, Frank MUELLER (also spelled MILLER), who was born in Baden, Germany around November 1837. He emigrated to the U.S. in 1860, and died in Dallas, Texas on 27 May 1901. He fought in the Civil War in a Texas regiment and settled in Jefferson, Texas where he married Azelai (Ida) MILLOT, widow of Eduard MILLOT, on 18 Feb 1873. They moved to Dallas, Texas where Frank was a baker. They had three children: Charles MILLER, born 1875 in Dallas; and twin daughters, Emma and Louise, born 1878 in Dallas. Any assistance in identifying further info for exploration in Germany would be greatly appreciated.

HYLAND, Barbara
eMail address: behyland@worldnet.att.net

I am researching my grandfather, William Herman GUTSCHMIDT, who emigrated from Baden to the U.S. in 1890. From the census records, he should have been about 15 years old at that time (would make his birthdate about 1875) so I assume that he came with other family members. I am not sure of this, but it is said that his father's name was Carl GUTSCHMIDT and he had a brother named Albert GUTSCHMIDT. Any help you can give me will be greatly appreciated.

JANALYN, Dennis
eMail address: tjdennis2@worldnet.att.net

I am searching for any information on Otto Armond BOLLER born 1 July 1884 in Baden Baden, Germany. NINE, Jeanie
eMail address: zinacat9@pacbell.net

I am researching Eva M. WEIRGER or WEINGER, born 19 February 1834, died 10 November 1923. She came to New York where she met her husband. Against her father's wishes, as the story goes, she married Captain Andrew P. ANDERSON. They moved to San Francisco around 1851 and had a daughter named Mary Elizabeth ANDERSON. They then settled in Suisun, CA. I have her death certificate which lists her birthplace as Germany. My mother recalls her grandmother claiming she was from Baden, Baden, Germany. Her father is listed as Ludwig WEIRGER or WEINGER (cannot tell from writing) and his birthplace is listed as Germany. Her mother's name is listed as SEIGLER (no first name) with the birthplace as France. I can find no on-line references for the name WEIRGER, but a few for the name WEINGER. Any information would be helpful.

NORMAN, Barbara
email address: norma003@acpub.duke.edu

I am searching for information on George and Caroline RIX who are listed on the 1860 Connecticut Federal Census as coming from Germany. On a later census, Caroline's birthplace is listed as Baden. I think they possibly came from a town called Fusilaut but I cannot find this town or village listed anywhere. Their children changed the spelling of their name to RICKS. I have not been able to locate them on any passenger lists, and I cannot find them on the 1850 census. Their birth dates should be roughly 1834 to 1838. They lived in Weston, Connecticut and Caroline appears on the census up through 1890. George is not mentioned after 1860, but I cannot find any record of his death. Their children were: Elma Delilah RIX born about 1858 and Frederick RIX born about 1866. Any information would be very much appreciated.

I'm trying to find information about my ancestors, but I'm not even sure that they came from Baden. The name Baden has come up a couple of times in my research, but I have never been able to pin it down. Hans John MOYER was born around 1682 (we think). We can find no documentation of his wife. He came to Pennsylvania with his son, Christian MOYER, born 10 December 1708 in Germany. Christian MOYER became a reverand here in the states and married Elizabeth KAUFFMAN, whose mother, Elizabeth KNEISSLE (KNEISLEY), was born in Schiltach, Baden, Germany. We have a lot of information on the family once they came to Pennsylvania, but nothing before then. I would appreciate any help that you might be able to give me. Unfortunately, we haven't been able to find documentation on when they came over there either.

SCHUMACHER, Pat
eMail addresses: patstewart@geocities.com

I am seeking information on George SCHUMACHER born in Baden, Germany on 5 January 1828. He married Catharina Barbara FUSSLER who was born in Baden, Germany on 22 May 1822. They emigrated to America around 1844, via Staten Island, NY, and settled at Erie, Pennsylvania. I have some records that
list George's father as Johnathan SCHUHMACHER born in Baden, and Catherine's father as Ernst FEUSSLER, also born in Baden. George and Catherine had ten children, all born at Erie, Pennsylvania. George died in 1904 in Washington State and Catherine died in Kansas. Any information
would be greatly appreciated.

SKOFF, Kathleen
eMail address: Skofflady@aol.com

I am looking for information on John (Johann) Frederick UEBELHOER born in Baden, Germany 30 Nov 1834. His father was John UEBELHOER also, but he was not a junior. He probably immigrated to the U.S. in the 1850's or earlier. He married Mary A. MILLER or MUELLER (born 22 March 1839 in Baden Baden) during or just before the Civil War. Mary immigrated to the U.S. around 1857. Both are buried in West Seneca, New York. In 1866, they were living in New York City. I'm looking for relatives of their son, John A. UEBELHOER, born after 1866. I believe his wife is buried with her in-laws in West Seneca, New York, but his gravesite is unknown.

STRAND, Carl
1436 South Bentley Avenue #6, Los Angeles, California 90025-, USA
eMail address: Strandeart@aol.com

I am searching for the European ancestry of my great-great-grandfather, Maximillian "Max" MAIER, born 28 July 1829 in Baden, Germany, died 1 May 1867 in Memphis, Tennessee, buried in Elmwood Cemetery. Max MAIER emigrated from Baden, departing from Le Havre, arriving at the port of New York in September 1849. He declared his intention to naturalize on 23 October 1851 at the age of 22 (Hamilton Co., Ohio, Citizenship Record Abstracts, 1837-1916). Max MAIER is lsited in the Memphis directories of 1855-1856 (proprietor of Harmony Hall, 167 Main) and 1860 (proprietor of Mozart Hall Hotel on south side of Monroe, between Main and 2nd). Max's wife was Monika "Veronica" (surname unknown), born 4 May 1832 at Villingen, Baden, Germany and died 7 Aug 1876 at Memphis, Tennessee. Her second husband was Henry LINDEMANN.

My great-grandfather, Adolph G. MAIER, born 3 November 1853 in Memphis, Tennessee, died 7 October 1923 at Los Angeles, CA, was apparently Max's only child. Adolph studied piano at the Conservatory of Music in Leipzig, where he met his wife Jenny GRAU, born 3 September 1859 at Lichenstein, Germany, died 25 January 1950 at Long Beach, CA. Jenny married 2) Herman OWEN. Adolph and Jenny MAIER married circa 1880 and had three children: Carl, born 27 July 1881 at Cincinnati, OH, died 29 October 1935 in Los Angeles, California; Max, born 8 April 1886 at Cincinnati, OH, died 18 October 1964 in Mt. Shasta, California; and Hildegard, born at Cincinnati, Ohio, died at age 13 at Cincinnati, Ohio. Family legend is that Max MAIER emigrated to the U.S. with his father, sister, and brother after his mother died, and that Max's father had been a bandleader. I do not know the name of Max's father or brother. Max's sister, Joseph Apalonia "Do Do" MAIER was born 11 March 1826 in Baden, Germany, and died 19 March 1904 at Memphis, Tennessee. She married Ferdinand SOHM, born 8 October 1817 in Germany, died 27 August 1890 at Memphis. They moved from Ohio to Memphis, Tennessee circa 1858-1868. Their three children were: John Joseph "JJ" SOHM, born 29 July 1850 at Cleveland, OH, died 7 September 1934 in Memphis, Tennessee; Julius Ferdinand SOHM, born 4 November 1853 in Ohio, died 6 April 1931 at Memphis, TN; and Louis F.SOHM, born circa 1855, died 20 September 1879 in Memphis, TN of yellow fever. We are in touch with descendants of "JJ" SOHM with the surnames of CALKINS, METZ, and WOOD who live in the Memphis area.

THOMA, Dick

eMail address: RThoma3772@aol.com

I am searching for the European roots of Anselm THOMA and Juliana KROHNING of Inzlingen, Loerrach, Baden, Germany. Anselm was born 24 April 1806 and Juliana was born 16 February 1813. They were married between 1836 to 1839. Three of their children, Donatus, Paul and Maria, were born in Baden; three children, Christoph, Heinrich and Christiana, were born in Washington county, Wisconsin after they immigrated in 1846. We would like to know if the names THOMA and KROHNING persist in Baden and if the families had been in Baden long before the early 1800's. We would also like to know what compelled Anselm and Juliana to leave in 1846 and what or who drew them to Wisconsin.

WENKER, Bernard

I am searching for information about Louis SCHMITT, born in Baden-Baden, Germany 29 January 1872. He was Catholic. He emigrated to the U.S. about 1886, leaving his family behind. He had at least one brother whose son, Otto SCHMITT, a German soldier, was killed in action during the World War I (1914-1918). I would like to find the names of his parents, grandparents, siblings, baptismal record, and whether there are any living members of the family in Baden-Baden.
Webmaster's Note: While the IGS (Immigrant Genealogy Society has a German Telephone Directory on CD-ROM that can be searched for Baden Schmitt listings, that will surely produce thousands of listings of little use. You would be better off posting his wifes name, if known and searching for the town she came from. That might be the way to get started. Have you looked for him in the Hamburg Passenger Lists (direct and indirect lists)?

WIELAND, Eileen

I am trying to obtain more information on the family of my grandmother Louise GIMBLE from Thugen, Baden Germany. Louise emigrated to the United States in 1909 with her uncle Ernest GIMBLE and a cousin Rose. The parents of Louise were August GIMBLE and Elkizabeth SHUNZLIU. Did she or her parents have any siblings? I am also trying to locate Thugen and learn about another cousin, Charles Gimble who emigrated to the US about 1909. Sorry, I do not have access to the Internet.

WINKELMAN, Joan M.
eMail address: bp995@FreeNet.Buffalo.edu

(Roman Catholic)

I am trying to determine former German hometown and relatives for Catholic emigrants from Baden. They bought farm land at East Eden, south of Buffalo, Erie county, New York; property deed dated 24 December 1844. Their alien application dated 1847 declared against the Duke of Baden. Michael WINKELMAN / WINKELMANN was born circa 1800 in Baden and married Barbara SCHMITT / SCHMIDT before 1834 in Baden. Barbara was born circa 1807 in Baden. They emigrated with their children, all born in Baden: John born 28 December 1836, Peter born circa 1834, Eva born circa 1838, and Barbara born circa 1840.

I have only two more possible FHL emigration films for Baden to check. I am not finding them. I've checked Alsace emigration films, various books of emigrants (circa 1844 not in some of them). Local records here provide no clues. The IGI lists only one Baden WINKELMAN (not my person) family of Neidenstein, Heidelberg, and the book German Emigrants lists 11 towns for origin of the various WINKELMAN'S but cross referencing those spellings with Atlantic Bridge to Germany - Baden finds that none are Baden towns. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. I'll be ordering FHL Neidenstein Catholic films after I receive the two last possible emigration films to check. Is there any one area that the dates, occupation of farmer, and Catholic suggest more than others to check? My final path will be to order Catholic records for every town in Baden until I find them. I have never sent letters to German records centers. If I must, can anyone suggest which addresses are best for clues?

See the BADRL Index for other listings.
