I am looking for information on the emigration from Germany to
the U.S. on the Michael BECKER family.
Michael, his wife Henriette, and probably their son, August
arrived in the U.S. in 1857. Michael was born at
Wilkersdorf, Brandenburg, Germany on 16 May 1824, to Gottfried
and Sophie BECKER. The Michael
BECKER family settled at Watertown, Wisconsin, after their
arrival in the U.S. There are records of the
family at St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Watertown. I would like
to know their port of departure from
Germany, port of entry in the U.S., and the name of ship and date
of arrival in U.S. Where should I start my
search? Thank you.
Webmaster' Note: Wilkersdorf was in kreis Königsberg and
is now Krzesnica, powiat Chokna, Poland; but no FHL microfilm
appears to exist for it under either location name. Becker is a
very common surname, translating to baker here. However since
you do have a specific location in the former German Empire,
after you search the IGI, the Ancestral File and the FHL surname
location section (there are listed) for any Becker surnames from
there, you might try your surnames in Die Ahnenstammkartei des Deutschen
Volkes on FHL microfilm - a three step process.
Comment by Siegfried RAMBAUM of Ithaca, New York, USA (eMail
address: siram@lightlink.com)
You should not be too surprised that no microfilmings exist for
that location. Wilkersdorf had no churches. The Lutherans
belonged to the parish of a neighboring village named Zornddorf.
If you have access to Archiv fuer Sippenforschung, volume
10, issue 4, April 1933, you would find a cross reference list of
the Lutheran church books in the Brandenburg province. Cornell
University Library, Ithaca, New York also has the bound volume of
1933, and it is available by Inter-Library Loan. The parish
affiliation of Wilkersdorf is in the April issue 1933, pages 97
through 141. Though much of the stuff listed in that index has
been lost in 1945, it nevertheless is a useful reference, as it
tells you what you would have to look for when searching for
church books.
Many churches in some villages were also serving neighbouring
smaller villages. The index also is interesting in one respect,
as it tells you about church books that were already lost in
1933, and how they were lost. And if something was lost in 1933
already, then you can give up all hope for it showing up
unexpectedly after 1945. Other than that, Wilkersdorf in Kreis
Koenigsberg i.N. (this "i.N." is important, as there is another
Koenigsberg in Prussia -- in East Prussia, though -- which is
also a county seat) is located in a region that to Germans is
much better known under the name of "Neumark"...
Is there a genealogical mailing list dedicated to this region?
Unfortunately, the mailing list is in German language only. But
then, names and places do not hinge on languages to have them
ring a bell with you. The mailing list archives can be found at
http://www.ecircle.de/circles/Neumark-L Howver, to have access to those, you
need to be subscribed to the mailing-list and use your
email-address as a user id and a password that will be
sent to you, when subscribing. To subscribe, send a blank email
to Neumark-L-subscribe@ecircle.de
The Neumark-Listers are very active in extracting all
genealogically relevant information from whatever sources they
can lay their hands on. So you possibly might want to check out
the many regional (i.e. for counties, professions, towns) indexes
that have resulted from that mailing list so far. They can be
found at http://home.t-online.de/home/Neumark-L Good luck on your research.

(My HomePage

I am researching the ancestry and heritage of the EICHHOLZ family
of Kreis Friedberg. My family lived in
Franzthal (parish of Netzbruch - Neumark - Brandenburg - Prussia)
in approximately the year 1830 undoubtedly
just after the departure of the Mennonite colonies to Poland and
Russia. My greatfather Heinrich August
EICHHOLZ moved to Lyons (France). One of his brothers left for
the U.S.A. while his other brothers and
sisters stayed in Prussia. Their father was called Hans (Johann)
Gotlob EICHHOLZ.
Henri Auguste EICHHOLZ was born 24 Febrary 1834 at Franzthal,
Kreis Friedeberg (Neumark-Preussen), son
of Hans Gottlob EICHHOLZ and Christine Frederika ZIPPEL (dates
and origin of the father and mother are
unknown). He died 1908 at Lyon (France). He married a) 17 July
1869 at Lyon, Josephine FECHTIG, born
(?) at Bischweier (Baden-Germany), the daughter of Fridolin F.
FECHTIG and Marie Eva SCHERER. She
died 6 July 1871 at Lyon; there were no children from this
marriage. b) 21 October 1871 at Lyon, BEURER
Marie Anne Josephine BEURER, born 23 February 1842 at Oberlingen
(Baden-Germany), died 1921 at Lyon
(France). Their children were i: Henri Louis EICHOLZ, born 03
April 1873 at Lyon - died 20 July 1954 at
Lyon (France). ii - Louise Josephine EICHOLZ born 09 July 1875
at Lyon, died 1875 at Seyssel (France).
Religion: probably evangelist. Place: Franzthal (Kreis
Friedeberg - Neumark-Preussen) in 1834. Emigration to
the USA (one his brothers), place and date unknown, estimated
circa 1860-1870. Profession : military & civil
tailor. Some dates: volunteered in the French Foreign Legion 2
December 1882 (Paris), served in Africa
(Sidi-Bel-Abbes ?) 18 December 1862-31 December 1863 and in
Mexico 1864-1867 (English-French
Expedition): 29 March 1864 at Vera Cruz, 13 April 1864 at Puebla.
Returned to Africa (probably Mascara) 17
April 1867. Finished the service 1 December 1867. Went to
Calais (France) or Lyon (France). Tailor at Lyon
1869 and later. Lived at Lyon 1869-1908.
Research into the ancestry and hereditary of the EICHHOLZ family:
My family lived at Frantzthal (parish of
Netzbruch - Neumark - Brandenburg - Prussia) in approximately the
year 1830 undoubtedly just after the
departure of the Mennonite colonies to Poland and Russia. My
grandfather Heinrich Adolph EICHHOLZ
moved to Lyons (France). One of this brothers emigrated to the
USA while his other brothers and sisters
stayed in Prussia. Their father was called Hans (Johann) Gotlob.
I'm looking for information about this family
in the USA and Germany; also want to trace their origins prior to
their settling in Frantzthal. The origins of
the village and non-Mennonite settlers also interest me. ICH

I am searching for family members of Albert and Klara GIEWALD who
I believe died in Falkensee,
Brandenburg in the 1930s. I think Albert was born at Hamburg and
Klara at Magdeburg in the mid 1800s.
They had eight children as follows: A) These children emigrated
to Wisconsin in October 1923: 1) Grete, born
at Schoenebeck 23 April 1896, died Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin 31
March 1953. Her son, Walter ERICH was
born at Falkenhagen, Brandenburg 25 February 1913, 2) Erich -
born Schoenebeck, died ?; 3) Lisbeth, born
Falkenhagen, Brandenburg 1904, died Sheyboygan, Wisconsin 1934.
B) These children remained in Germany:
4) Helen, 5) Robert (died at Stalingrad?), 6) Clara, 7) Ernst and
8) Lotte. Falkenhagen and Seegefeld merged
to form Falkensee, Brandenburg.
Webmaster's Note: Falkenhagen and Seegefeld Evangelisch
church records (1659-1804, 1806-1874) exist
on 5 reels of FHL microfilm. There is a Schoenebeck in Saxony
near Magdeburg and another in Pommern -
Pomerania.

I have just started researching the GOHLKE branch of my family
tree. Before the family moved to Berlin in
the early 1900's they lived in an Brandenberg area called the
"Netzebruch" which now lies in Poland (Gorzow
Wielkopolski province I believe). The villages they lived in
were called (German names; polish names
unknown): Hammelstall, Antoinettenlust, Vollrath and Alt
Gurkowsch Bruch. The generations (sorted by time)
were: 1) Andreas GOHLKE (born ?, died ?); 2) Carl Ludwig GOHLKE
(born 1791, died ?); 3) Karl Friedrich
Wilhelm GOHLKE (born 1818, died 1897); 4) Carl August GOHLKE
(born 1871, died ?);
They were all married to women either from Alt Gurkowsch Bruch or
from the area around Landsberg / Warte
(Guscht, Guschterbruch, Guschterhollaender - today Goszczanowo,
Lipke, Alt-Lipke - today Lipki Wielki,
Annenaue, Darbendorf, Schoenefeld - here the Polish names are
unknown to me). Names in these branches:
SCHULZ, MEYER, SCHNELL, DICKHOFF, SICHEL / STICHEL ?, LUECK,
FANSELOW, KRUEGER,
GOLIKE, BENGSCH, RAASCHEN, WEDDERMANN, SCHWANDT. As far as I
know all have been
Lutheran. I would be really glad about any information that
helps me with the family research. That includes
information about the GOHLKEs in general (missing birth /
marriage / death dates, siblings etc.), and the
identification of their hometowns (Polish names today?). Thanks
in advance,

I am seeking information on my grandfather, Robert Otto MUELLER,
born 14 December 1859 to William and Rosalie MUELLER at Cottbus,
Brandenburg. Robert died at Elmira New York in 1926 leaving a
brother Albert MUELLER at Frankfurt am Main and a brother Otto
MUELLER at Franfurt an der Oder, plus nieces Margaret MUELLER who
settled at Woodmere Long Island, New York, and Gertrude MUELLER,
nephews William MUELLER and Paul MUELLER. Robert MUELLER arrived
at New York about 1885 and was organist, choir director of the
First German Evangelical Church at Elmira NY. How do I find the
right Evangelical parish records for his baptism in Cottbus? And
how can I trace any kin in Germany with such a common name? I
would appreciate your suggestions.

I am researching my family history in parts of Germany in 1700
that are now Poland. All of the wills and documents I have all
list Brandenberg province (now Poland). Andreas KRAUS was born
in 1764 in Brandenberg (town or province?), died 1835. His wife
was Johanne Henriette STOCK who died in 1834. The latest burial
certificate I have is for Johann August Andreas KRAUS who died at
Biesdorf in 1849.
Part of my problem is access to maps and apparently none are
available up here. To date I have had no response to my letter
to the Berlin archives. The places that I am looking for include
Prishelwitz, Ost Prussia, Bierdorf (1790's), Praus Nitz (1793),
Gremmentin (a game keeper is listed in 1793), Luben (1793),
Probsthayn (1602), Kreydelwitz (1900) and the Augustberg district
of Frezberg, which I believe to be present day Augustberg, east
of Chemnitz. Would you please advise as to where I could find
maps or a gazetteer for Prussia Germany in 1600 - 1700? I am not
on the Internet.

Frank Herman STELTER was born 10 November 1888 at Stettin,
Grabow, Germany. His Father Herman
Richard Stelter and Mother Mary Stelter, Maiden name RUDOLF,
moved from Sweden to Germany. Frank had
at least 2 sisters, one a twin dying at an early age. His father
was a sea captain in Norway during the sardine
season and followed his brother to Germany to take up a boat
building trade. He arrange an apprenticeship for
his son Frank, who then stowed away overseas at the age of 13.
He arrived in New Zealand where he later
married and had a family. He lost contact with his family during
World War I. As family descendants we
would like to know if there are any surviving relatives. I
originally thought the family was from Switzerland
but it has been confirmed they are Swedish. Is the surname
Stelter known differently in Sweden?
Webmaster's Notes: Stettin (now , Poland), on the Oder
River that has
divided Germany from Poland since the 1945 Yalta aggreement, was
Berlin's
seaport from the early 1800's until World War II. However Sweden
controlled
the part of the German province of Pommern west of the Oder River
from the
treaty of Osnabrück - circa 1648 - the end of the 30 years
religious war
- until the early 1800's, roughly the time of Napolean's north
European
adventures.
Sweden thus controlled the five major north German seaports for
over a
century after the 30 years war (from Wismar east) and this
included Stettin.
It was negotiated as part of the Osnabrueck treaty (probably to
blut the
possibility of any invasion of its homelands). Thus for a
seafaring family,
moving from Sweden to Stettin was really no big deal, and
probably a matter
of accepting a job. So you best start searching Swedish records
now. I know
of no reason to believe the spelling of the Stetler surname
should have
changed from Germany to Sweden, especially since Stetler has no
diacritical
marks.

My gr-grandfather was Oswald JUDATZ born 13 April 1860, reputedly
at Forst en Lausitz, Lausatia. He was
academy educated in Berlin before marrying Anna SCHULTZ - born 31
August 1861 in Essen. They married in
Germany (place unknown) and emigrated to the USA before 1888. An
uncle tells the story that Oswald's
half-brother inherited the family cabinet making business in
Forst and essentially ran it bankrupt. Oswald
returned to Forst sometime between 1900 and 1914 to settle the
estate of this half brother after his death. I
would be grateful for advice or assistance in researching cabinet
making businesses operating in and around
Forst from about 1850 to 1900.
I would also welcome any advice or comments one might have on the
surname JUDATZ. I have yet to find any
other US occurance of this surname as spelled above. I have been
advised this may be an anglicized corruption
of the surname JUDAS. I have also encountered two researchers
investigating the Polish name JUDASCZ.
Several German nationals suggest it may be of Jewish origin
although Oswald himself was an active Lutheran,
helping to found an Evangelical Lutheran church in North Hartford
CT where he settled.
Webmaster's Note: Forst en Lausitz is located in Brandenburg,
Prussia and several FHL microfilm
collections exist of some of the town's churchbooks. You best
determine Oswald's religion before you start a
serious search. Try checking the IGI (International Genealogical
Index) and the Ancestral File at your closest
LDS Family History Center. Then try Ahnenstammkartei des
Deutschen Volkes.

I am looking for any information regarding Henriette FENNER, born
in Brandenburg, Prussia 27 March 1835.
She emigrated to America in 1856 and married August GARTMANN 10
October 1856 at Sheboygan,
Wisconsin where she remained the rest of her life. They had 15
children...some named Charles (Karl)
Ferdinand, Albert, Fred, and F.W. She died 27 June 1897.
Webmaster's Note: Of the 28 citations of the Fenner name in
the Surname Search section of the FHL
Catalog, you might want to check record #19 - from Belzeg (sic)
Brandenburg. There is a Belzig, Brandenburg
for which Evangelische churchbook records (1805-1872) exist on 5
reels of FHL microfilm. For Gartmann,
there are two citations pointing to Graubünden (Graubuenden
/ Graubunden), a Germanic part of
Switzerland.

In recent weeks I located my ancestors on the 1819 Census of
Mecklenburg. They were Hans Heinrich FRICK,
who's birth information says he was born 4 August 1774 at
Maulbeerwalde by Wittstock and his wife was
Marg. Elis. FILTER or VILTER, who was born at Prodohl, Parish of
Falkenhagen on 24 December 1761.
They had a son, my great great grandfather, Johann Friedrich
Christian FRICK. He was born 14 June 1806 at
Mayenburg, Parish of Mayenburg. I am told all locations are in
Brandenburg. My question is, are there any
films available at the Family History Center in Salt Lake City
for the above mentioned towns? I am planning a
trip there in two weeks. Thank you for your help.
Webmaster's Note: You do not mention the religion, but the
only FHL films I see are for Jewish

Kuestrin 10 April 1904 and emigrated to Canada in 1929. His
father's name was Albert SCHAEDE and his
mother's name was Flora SINOFUSS. I know that there were several
other children in this family but do not
know their names. I would like to correspond with anyone who has
any experience in researching civil and
church records for Kuestrin for the period from 1890 to 1920. I
have tried the various Internet sources of
genealogical information and the FHL sources, but have not yet
found any information about my father's family

parish registers are to be found.
Webmaster's Note: With the extreme brevity of your

I am researching Johann Ludwig MUELLER (he went by Louis MILLER
later in life). His father was August
MUELLER (born in Illinois) and his mother was Emilie Ernestine
HABERLAND (born at Luckenwalde,
Brandenburg, Germany, the daughter of Karl Gottfried HABERLAND
and Charlotte Emilie UEBEL from
Lindow (Mark) Brandenburg, Germany. August and Emilie
(HABERLAND) MUELLER were married in 1877
in St. Clair County, Illinois and Johann Ludwig was born later
that year.
In 1880, the family was listed in Central Township, St. Louis
County, Missouri. I would like to know which
Lutheran church they might have attended in Central Township. I
have pictures of this family that I would like
to have identified. I would especially like to learn where
August MUELLER was from, who were his parents,
and what happened to him. After living at Little Rock, Arkansas
for a few years, Louis MILLER moved to
Lane County, Oregon with his grandmother, Charlotte Emilie UEBEL
HABERLAND and uncles at the turn of
the century. They were Lutheran. Emilie Ernestine (HABERLAND)
MUELLER married Louis SELVITZ in
1886 at Little Rock, Arkansas.

there is a 1914 city dirctory, 1860-1916 military records,
