I am looking for information on John Bernard ENGELKEN. He was
born 5 July 1813, in
Melstrup, Lower Saxony, to John Theodor ENGELKEN and Anna WUBLE
GROTE ENGELKEN.
They belonged to the Catholic Church. I want to know about any
siblings. I would like to know why he
decided to leave his homeland. Were there political, religious,
economical events which effected him?
He emigrated to America in 1848, with his wife, Mary Rosina
KUPPER, and 4 children. They settled at St.
Louis, Missouri for a year before moving to Jo Davis county
Illinois. He worked for 8 yrs in the lead mines to
save enough to buy a farm. In 1857, he moved his family to
Allamakee county Iowa, where they raised 5
children. In 1881, the children gone from home, they moved to
Nemaha county Kansas, where they lived out
their days with their eldest son.

Henry MAIMAN was born at Freren, Provence of Hannover 25 October
1840. Henry emigrated to Chicago, Illinois, USA in 1865. Henry
moved to Wauconda, Lake County, Illinois in 1867. His parents
were Gerhardt and Catherine MAIMAN. He had a sister: Caroline,
and a brother: Herman, born about 1853 in Germany. Herman was
found at Wauconda Illinois during the 1880 census. I am looking
for any information or tips on finding information regarding this
family in Germany. Thank you for any help.

KUNKE/KUNCK/KUNK
Cornerstone of St. Vitus Church, (Catholic) dated 1420 in
Altenlunne Parish, Plantlunne District, Kreis Lingen, Emsland.
(Present day area Parish & District known as Lunne.
The book Urkunden und Sonstige Schriftliche Quellen zur
Geschichte des Kirchspiels Emsburen by Walter Tenfelde,
Lingen (Ems) 1990, ISBN 3-927099-13-9, lists Johan and Trinen
KUNKE, administrators / operators of KUNKEMUHLE, (KUNKEMILL) by
dates of 26 April, 1625 and 16 July, 1626. The mill was located
on Grosse Aa, Moorlage, Plantlunne District. (Grosse Aa is a
water feed canal take-off at junction of Ems River & Dortmund-Ems
Canal on the east side.) KUNKEMUHLE is still in existence,
owned by SCHROEDER family since 1902, no longer powered by water,
partially operated as mill. An electrified saw mill was added in
the 1900's. The surrounding area on the Dortmund-Ems Canal is
operated as an R&R area, with cabins, swimming and boating on the
Ems Canal.
My great-grandfather Herman Bernard "Franz" KUNK, born 29 January
1822 was the 5th of 8 children born to Johann Bernhard KUNK and
Anna Adelheid HUNK nee HENSEN of Bramsel. They were married on
4 February 1812 at St. Vitus Church, Altenlunne. I need
documentation of birth and death dates of Johann Bernhard and
Anna Adelheid KUNK. I also need date of death of first born son,
Johann Gerhard KUNK, 2nd child born on 16 December 1814, and
through primogeniture stayed in Germany. I believe the oldest
daughter and 3 sons emigrated to Cincinnati in 1845/46 and
married there. I am searching for immigration details, - ships,
dates, etc. I have documentation of Johann Gerhard Herman KUNK,
4th born child, married to Gesine MEINDERS 18 January 1848, St.
John the Baptist Church, Cincinnati, and Herman Bernard "Franz"
KUNK, 5th born child, married to Mary HOFFMAN. 15 July, 1849, St.
Philomena Church, Cincinnati. The marriages of M. Theresa KUNK
to John William GUNTMAN, 27 January 1848, Old St. Mary's Church,
Cincinnati, and H.H. KUNK to Mary SELS, circa 1850 may prove to
be two other siblings of Gerhard H. and Franz KUNK.
I need documentation of births, marriages and deaths of Johan
KUNK and Gesine HILVERS, married 21 April, 1711; Johan Bernhard
KUNK and Anna Maria WENNEKER, married 25 January 1756; Johann
Gerhard KUNK & Gesine Elisabeth SCHMEES, married 12 August 1788,
probably in Altenlunne, and earlier siblings back to Johan and
Trinen KUNKE in 1625. Hopefully, records still exist at
Bistumarchiv, Osnabruck, or St. Vitus Church, Altenlunne, Kreis
Lingen, Neidersachsen, Germany. Anyone? Thank you for your
assistance and Happy Hunting!

I am searching for the town or village of origin of my family.
Gerhardt A. WESTER, born 1799, and his wife
Magaretha WESSELS, born 1805, left Bremen and arrived at New
Orleans 1 December 1853 and then went to
St. Louis, Missouri. They had children: Mary, Margaret,
Elizabeth, Adelhaid, Helena, born 13 September
1842, and Tekla, and possibly a son Heinrich, all born in
Germany. Helena married in St. Peter and Paul
Catholic Church in St. Louis to Bernard WOLKEN born 4 December
1838 in Germany. He had brothers
Henry Herman and Gerhardt Herman, a sister Mary. All of them
give their place of origin as the Kingdom
of Hanover. I believe that they were farmers and in St. Louis
were in they dairy business. If you have any
information I will be glad to share with you. Thank you

I am searching for information on the following families, all of
whom left Emsland, worked in Slagharen in the Netherland for
several years, then emigrated to the Damiansville/Germantown area
of Clinton County Illinois, mostly in the period 1837-1845.
John Bernard KALMER was born in 1793 at Backum; his wife Anna
Maria KRIEGER was born in 1811. John Herman SANTEN / SANTEL was
born 1795 at Fullen. On 12 February 1814 he married Anna Maria
BOVEN at Meppen. John Gerhard WESTER was born about 1774 at
Kleine Besch (I have been unable to find this locality). His
wife Maria Helene WILKE / WILKENS was born in 1792 at Ulsen.
Herman Heinrich HEIMANN was born in 1786 at Gross Fullen. He
married in 1809 at Meppen and died in 1811 at Gross Fullen. His
wife was Anna Maria BOVEN. Thier son married Anna Maria
Catherine MENKE, who was born in 1814 at Haren. Associated names
include WUEBBLES, ALTGILBERS / OLDEGILBERS, RENSING, WESTER,
TOENNIES, WELLEN and KORTE. All of these families, or their
children, immigrated to the US in about 1838. I would like to
exchange information with anyone working on these.

I am guessing that the book: Urkunden und Sonstige
Schriftliche Quellen zur Geschichte des Kirchspiels
Emsburen by Walter Tenfelde, Lingen (Ems) 1990, ISBN
3-927099-13-9, mentioned in the EMSRL is
only printed in German. Perhaps someone could do a look-up for
me and check my surnames?
STEVENS, ABELN, LUCKEN, HECKMANN from the villages of Lathen,
Meppen and Melstrup.
My immigrant ancestor from the Emsland was Stephan Herman STEVENS
and his wife Maria Tecla ABELN.
They emigrated 1867 and homesteaded in northeastern Nebraska.
My Stevens line: Stephan H. STEVENS was born 1832 at Melstrup,
married (date unknown) to Maria Tecla
Abeln, born 1825 Melstrup. Stephanas STEVENS was born 1786 at
Melstrup married (date unknown) to
Helena Maria Abeln born 1792 at Melstrup. Stephanus STEVENS born
1743 at Meppen or Lathen, married
(date unknown) to Maria Elizabeth HECKMANN born 1754 at Melstrup.
Stephen STEVENS, born about 1693
(place unknown), married Tecla (unknown surname). This couple
was listed in a St. Vitus Catholic Church
census. This census listed ten children by name and a woman
named Angela born 1669. I assume her surname
was Stevens or surely they would have written it in.
My Abeln line: Johannes Bernard ABELN, father of Maria Tecla,
born 1769, married 5 June 1810 at St. Vitus
Catholic Church, Lathen, to Helena LUCKEN / LUECKEN. I have
christening records from St. Vitus Catholic
Church at Lathen. I am looking for someone researching these
surnames to help fill in the
blanks. I will share all my records.
