The Research Outline - Germany(FHL item #34061) was first published in July 1994 by the Family History Library (FHL) at Salt Lake City, Utah, then updated and reissued in 1997. It is the finest, most comprehensive 52 page research guide available in English for the subject of Germanic genealogy record searching using (FHL) sources. While designed to showcase FHL sources, it also cites other important sources in America and Europe. It is of special value to the beginner as well as to those experienced Germanic record searchers who have encountered any upexpected difficulties and can use a brief refresher on the extent of this collection.

This monograph was prepared for distribution by FEEFHS. It is based on the questions asked during presentations based on using this research outline. These lectures have been given at various FHC sponsored seminars and society meetings thruout California and western states from 1995-2000.

California Record Searchers: This will also help answer the "next most obvious question" for record searchers who are near one of the eight University of California campus Main Libraries, but are not near a Family History Center (FHC). It also includes the starting FHL microfilm or fiche numbers for each reference and the call numbers for these books in the UC library system and where other California libraries carry the same book or film.

Record Searchers outside of California will find many of these citations available at any major research library. Further, browsing in the library stacks where these books are found often uncovers other volumes on the same or simular topic that can make a library visit surprisingly productive.

Please remember that the references in the Research Outline - Germany can be found in the Family History Library Catalog (FHLC). In turn this catalog is found at all Family History Centers worldwide (on fiche and at most centers on CD-ROM). It is also found at a growing number of public libraries, including the Sutro (California Genealogy) Library (on Winston Drive near Stonetown) in San Francisco. Remember also that the FHLC fiche version has a subject index, which is not yet available on the CD-ROM version of the FHLC.

Different Citation Numbers: Reemember that the FHL uses the "Dewey Decimal System" while The University of California library system (am most other U.S. public and university libraries) use the "Library of Congress" sytem. Thus a FHL book citation will bear a different citation number in the University of California and other major library systems.

Obtaining the Research Outline - Germany: Copies can be purchased for about US$1.00 each from any Family History Center or from the Family History Library at Salt Lake City, Utah.

Abbreviations: Please see the list at the end of this monograph for the abbreviations used to identify other libraries.
