eMail address: Glonette@aol.com

I'm researching my grandfather: Henry J. DREWES, born December 1853 in Germany. The closest I can connect to his birth place is at Winkledorf, Germany, twenty miles from Bremmen. Some of the zfamily has pictures of graves there with the name DREWES on some of the tombstones. I know of one brother, along with my grandfather, who both had butcher shops at San Francisco, California, after immigrating to America. My grandfather was married at San Francisco, California in 1883. I don't know when he came to America. I shall appreciate any information you can give me to pursue this search.

(Evangelical Lutheran)

I am searching for a source to look up church records (or government records) concerning Johann Peter Christian BECKER of Assel / Asseln, Hannover Provence. He was born 17 February 1826, Married (at St. Nicoli - Stade) on 27 April 1848 and died in CA 1848 in Assel. J. P. C. BECKER was a Geriftschreiber at the court in Assel. I am specifically looking for information on his death (date and cause). I believe this information would be in the parish registers of "Ev.-luth. Landeskirche Hannover" for Church District Kehdingen - Assel or Church District Stade - St. Nicoli. I am also looking for civil records that might tell where in Assel J. P. C. BECKER and his family lived and a map of Assel for the period around 1850 to 1880. Any recommendations or suggestions will be welcome. Thanks.

I am searching for marriage records of my father, Wilhelm Heinrich KRICKAU and Helen KRICKAU, married between 1912 - 1923. Thier last known address was Green Street, Hannover, Germany before he left for USA in September 1923. My father, (William KRICKAU), was born in Bendorf (near Neuwied) on 21 May 1895 (Father, Fritz Martin KRICKAU; Mother, Helene BONN). He had an uncle, Albert KRICKAU, who I believe immigrated to the USA in 1872. He had a picture taken in San Francisco, CA. I have found an Emma Sophie BECKWITH 1878-1941 and a Louise Henrietta SWIFT 1883-1945 in Alameda county, California. They both show their father as a KRICKAU and mother's maiden name LODING. This is perhaps the cousin my father, who lived with them when he first arrived in CA. I am also looking for the cousin he went to live with in Oakland, California, named Luis SWIFT. That family lived at 667-61st Street, Oakland, California. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I would like to know the address of the Archive of Hannover, Germany for the 28 April 1823 birth of Johanna SCHLUETER. Believe that she was Lutheran and immigrated to US before 1849. She married a Rudolph WESSELING from Veltrup, Germany in St. Louis, Missouri, USA. I appreciate any help you can give. I have checked all the microfilm for Hannover, Hannover, Germany - by my ancestor was not found. Possibly: Goettingen, Luechow, Stade. Coppenbruegge could be found in Hameln or Kreis Hamelin??

DITTMAN, Jerry

eMail address: DittDad@aol.com

I am looking for information on my immigrant great grandparents Joseph Frederick DITTMAN and his wife, Catherine M. HENGELSBERG. Records of the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Catholic Diocesan Archives indicate that they both were from Osnabrueck. I have estimated that they emigrated to Pittsburgh, with possibly a daughter, between about 1853 and 1857. Frederick Joseph DITTMANN was born 31 January 1832, calculated from his age given in his death notice, he died at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. 19 May 1886. I am assuming that his wife, Catherine M. HENGELSBERG was born within a year or two of that year; she also died in Pittsburgh 21 May 1917.

The Diocesan Archives have also given me records on two other Catherine HENGELSBERG whose place of origin is listed as Hannover and Osnabrueck. The parents of one Catherine are given as Joh. Heinr. and Maria HENGELSBERG; the other's parents are given as Georg and Angela HENGELSBERG. These two HENGELSBERGS were married in Pittsburgh in 1845 and 1848 to a KOVERMANN and a VOSKUHLE. The Catherine HENGELSBERG whose parents where Joh. Heinr. and Maria HENGELSBERG was born probably in the early 1820s. The Catherine HENGELSBERG whose parents were Georg and Angela HENGELSBERG was born probably in the late 1820s. These estimated birth dates are base on marriage at about the age 20. It is my estimate that the grooms of these Catherines were also born in the same time periods as the bride. I would also like to find the family connection between these three HENGELSBERG families, if, it exists. These HENGELSBERG families and the DITTMANN family are intertwined in the Archive Records through sponsorship at baptisms and witnesses at marriages.

According to his 1847 New York Lutheran marriage record, my great-great-grandfather, Johann Friedrich THELER, was baptized at Hunteburg in 1822. I have found other perons named Theler in the LDS records for 1821 and 1823 but none in 1822. I would like to know if the Evangelical church at Hunteburg would still have baptism recorts for 1822 or would I have to look for them in Hannover? Thank you.

EDWARDS, Ralph

(Evangelical Association)

I would like information on the ancestry of William BUDDE (born Christian Wilhelm BUDDE) on 5 December 1835 in Hanover Prussia. He died from apoplexy on 29 Decembr 1913. When he was about 9 years old, he immigrated with his parents to America and settled in Cook county Illinois. Soon, however, his father died, after which the family moved to Chicago. After his marriage in 1855, he moved to Wheeling, Illinois and in 1879 came to Minnesota and settled in Nicollet county (near Minneapolis). About 14 years later, he moved with his family to Mankato, Minnesota, where he resided until his death. Brother BUDDE was converted in his youth under the influence of the Evangelical Association and tried to live a Christian life and serve God. His wife died in 1911. He leaves 2 sons and 3 daughters, besides many other friends. A. A. SCHENDEL. (from a newspaper obituary) Occupation - House Mover; Wifes name: Anna Maria WOLF, born 3 December 1833, location unknown.

GOTTEMOLLER, Sophie

(Roman Catholic)

I am trying to find information about my husband's ancestors. Johann Heinrich Joseph GOTTEMOLLER emigrated to the United States with his wife, Elizabetha TANGEMAN KORTE (widow) GOTTEMOLLER, in the 4th quarter of 1836 to Baltimore. Johann Heinrich was the son of Johann Bernard Joseph GORTEMOLLER nee BECKER and Catharina Maria HELLWIG and was born at Kloster Lage, Rieste in 1800 ? Johann Bernard Joseph was born to ? BECKER and C.M. MECKLENFELD in Vorden?. After the death of Catharina he married Margaretha Maria Eliszbetha BERLAGE. Catharine died in 1813 and Johann Bernard Joseph died in 1814. We do not know of any children born of the second marriage or of any other children of Johann Bernard Joseph and Catharina Maria. Johann Heinrich Joseph GORTEMOLLER and Elizabetha had three children in Germany - Elizabeth, born 1831; Gertrude, born 1833; and Bernard, born 1835. Have no idea how much of this information is complete. Also do not know where the three children were born or how we can trace the BECKER connection. Johann Heinrich GOTTEMOLLER listed Hannover on his Declaration of Intent for Citizenship. I would like to know where he and Elizabeth lived and why the name change from BECKER. I know that names were changed when a man married the daughter of a family with a farm but no sons. But we know of no such marriage. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

HORAK, Jeanne
eMail address: jeanne@emperor.co.za

I am looking for any information on my HORAK ancestors before 1704. I know that Jan Andries HORAK was born at Altendam, Hannover in 1704. He later left by ship from Amsterdam to immigrate to the Cape (South Africa) in the employment of the VOC (Dutch East India Company). My father has traced our family back to him and if anybody is interested I can supply them with full information on HORAK'S in South Africa 1734 - 2002. I also know that the surname is originally from eastern Europe and I would like to try to trace my ancestors back to eastern Europe, but I am struggling to do so without the names of Jan Andries HORAK'S parents. Any information would be appreciated greatly! Thank you.

I am looking for information on Henry Frederick KIRCHMANN (born 1852) and his wife, Wilemina KOOP KIRCHMANN, who came with (4) sons and daughters to America. Her oldest son, Heinnich Diederich KIRCHMANN, came to America in 1898 and was listed on the Ellis Island website as coming from Hannover Germany. He sent for them later, but I have not found them on the Ellis Island website although there youngest child was born in America.

I am searching for information about and ancestors of Johann Dietrich KUEKER who had two sons, Heinrich Willhelm Friedrich KUEKER born 2 August, 1836 at Borstel Hannover and Friedrich KUEKER born 29 June 1839 also at Borstel, Hannover. I believe Johann and his two sons emigrated to the U.S. in 1845. I would like to know who his wife was. Where did he emigrate from Germany from and where did he land in the US? Also information about Borstel - such as location in Hannover. Johann married a Dorothea BIERMANN at Zion Lutheran Church at Bensenville, Illinois, U.S. in 17 June 1852 and had a third son, Willhelm KUEKER born 16 August, 1853.

I am looking for Joh. Friedrich FUELLING / FULLING, born before 1812 at Harpenfeld, Bad Essen, Hannover Germany. He married Mar. Elinore THIESSEHARPEN / THIESCHARPER and they had a child, Johanne Christopher FUELLING, in 1832, who married Marie E. DUFELMEIER and immigrated and settled at Cleveland, Ohio.
Also, Peter QUELL born 3 February 1849, his brother Heinrich QUELL born 29 May 1840 in Hannover. Both brothers died at Cleveland, Ohio. Peter married Mary BARLAG, who came from Lintorf, Wittlag, Hannover. I'm not sure if Peter and Mary are from the same village. I was told Peter came from the city of Hannover. Peter's mother was Katherine KLINTWOOD / LINTWOOD / CLINTWOOD. The death certificate stated the mother's name, but it was hard to read. Peter was sent to the US by his parents because they did not want him to fight in the war. Peter named his sons: Edward Diedrich, Eddy, Paul, William, Wilbur, Elmer. Heinrich named his sons: John, Heinrich, Wilhelm. Peter came to the US January 1869, and Heinrich had come before. Also, Friedrich Ernest BARLAG was born before 1825 and his wife Elinore DREHS was born in Hannover. Marie Elisabeth BRINKMANN was born before 1812 and married Joh Heinr. DUFELMEYER at Haustenfeld, Bad Essen, Hannover. Thank you.

I am looking for information on the ROSEBROCK family. An 1880 US census for Ohio shows my ancestors JOHANN HEINRICH (Henry) ROSEBROCK, wife Margaretha, Martha or Metta and children John, Henry and Herman. All of this particular family immigrated to America in 1872 or 1873. Others may have come on other dates. I don't know whether it was the city of Hanover, proper or Hannover, Prussia, the province. I got the information from the US Federal census of 1880, where it says Hannover. Johann Heinrich was born circa 1842. I believe his parents were Johann ROSEBROCK and Anna M. BERIAN, but I'm not positive. A record that I have that is in German has a stamp Kirche zu Visselhovede. I don't know if that is a city or not. I can also read the wording Rhade, Saint Rodenburg, and the word Leven. I wish that I could read these papers and make out enough to make sense out of it. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Wilhelmina SCHWATZFAGER was my great grandmother's maiden name. I am trying to find out the names of her parents, or her brothers or sisters. Once upon a time, my mother told me that my great grandmother's name was Wilhelmina Carolina Charasina Augusta SCHWARTZFEGER-SWIHART. I never forgot that, although never knew how it was suppose to be spelled, and don't believe anyone else did either. She signed my mother's autograph book back in 1899 "W. C. SWIHART". I'm guessing that she immigrated to America from Germany in about 1845. My research so far has uncovered: According to her obituary (SCHWATZFAGER was how it was spelled), she was born 22 October 1833, in the Providence of Hanover, Germany, she died 17 January 1918, at Rush Springs, Oklahoma. She came to America at the age of 12 years in company with her father, located in Holmes county, Ohio, there in June 1853, married Fred SWINEHART. In the year of 1867, they moved to Jasper county, Iowa. Early in life she became a member of the Lutheran Church.

Her marriage record shows her listed as Willian Seville SWITSFIGER. Another wedding record, she is listed as SWITZER, Willian Seville. Her husband's parents were also married in Holmes County on 15 October 1829 -- George SWINEHART and Katharine SNYDER-SWINEHART. The 1850 Federal census of Holmes county, lists George and Cathrine with their children, at the bottom, Frederick SWINDHART married Seville SWITZER 23 June 1852. The 1850 census also shows Wilhelmina living with a family of SNYDERS; she is listed as Mina SWARTZFELLO, age 17, Germany, also listed is Jacob SNYDER, 67, Jonathan, 56, Daniel, 60, & Mary, 49, (maybe some of Katharine's relations ?) also a Mary BAKER, 15, and an Isiah SHUNK, 20, all from Md. Pa. & Ohio. The 1860 census show Frederick SWINEHART and Wilhelmina (after George & Catherine had passed away) with some of his brothers & sisters, and 3 of their own. I have a marriage record of Joseph SHUNK marrying a Palena SWATSFINGER, on November 15, 1855. The 1860 census (Saltcreek Township, Holmes Co.) also shows a Isiah SHUNK, 31, with a Paullena, 20, with two small children, and a Henry SWATZFAGER, 15 (this would have been the year I think Wilhelmina came over) farmhand, also a James McCULLOCK, 26, farmer.

The 1887 history in Jasper County, Iowa, says Wilhelmina first came to Pennsylvania as a child, and then Ohio, it lists her birthday as 22 October 1832, Frederick had died 11 February 1874. I also have record where a Henry SWERDSFEGER died 22 March 1845, 39 years of age, buried in New Bedford Cemetery, Clark Township, Holmes county, Ohio. I thought perhaps this might be the father of my great grandmother Wilhelmina. He is listed in the "Ohio Estates and Wills, and Index", by Carol Willsey Bell, Probate Case File #596. I thought this was a chance to find out relatives, so wrote Coshorton County, I couldn't find a Clark Township in Holmes Co., anyway they looked it up for me, and I wasn't lucky the paper trail stopped there, had amount of money, and attorneys, and the the last entry just a few dollars left, but no names. They informed me that New Bedford Cemetery was actually in Holmes county, something about some of the territory switched, way back.

I have searched all the ship lists I could find, for Wilhelmina and her father, or others, but to no avail. I found another lady that was looking for the parents of her great grandmother, also. Her great grandmother's maiden name was Wilhelmina SCHARTZFAGER (also?), but she, as I gather, was born 19 October 1831, came from the same part of Germany, but was married to a man with the last name of "NEAR" on 21 July 1853 in Pennsylvania, and they are both buried in western Kansas, isn't that strange, that the dates are so close, etc. I have a feeling that something happened to Wihelmina's father or parents between 1845-1850, but that she must be some relation to the other SWATZFAGER, SWATSFINGER, etc., listed above. I have contacted a man, who says the Henry SWATZFAGER that is listed in the 1860 census in Holmes County, Ohio, with the SHUNK family is his great great grandfather, and that Isiah SHUNK'S wife, Paulina, is Henry's sister, and there is another sister Louisa, who married a RAMAGER, also a brother, Harmon. Louisa born 1837, Harmon 1839, Paulina 1841, Henry, 1844 or 45. Much later, I think in Louisa's obituary, it is stated that her parents were both born in Germany, came to America, where they met and were married, and he thinks maybe the Henry SWERDSFEGER who died in 1845, and buried in Holmes county might be his great great great grandfather, he knows by obituaries that his g-g-g-grandfather was married to a HINKLE / HEINKLE. I feel I have looked everywhere I can think of on my Wilhelmina, and am open for any suggestions. Thank you!

Frank "Franz" GIESKE was my great grandfather. He was born in Germany, according to his death notice in the Cincinnati Frei Presse of 25 November 1894 - this was at Horsten (Hoersten), Amt. (Amtsgerichts = court district) Malgartan in the Kingdom of Hannover about 29 March 1840. We guess that he immigrated to the USA about 1866, the year that Prussia annexed Hannover. His wife was named Elizabeth BROERMAN / BROERMANN. She was born about 1843, probably in the same part of Hannover (Horsten, Malgartan, Neuenkirchen, etc.), where her husband came from. The two married in December 1868 at Covington, Kentucky, where they were then living. Their first children, Joseph GIESKE (1870) and Henry GIESKE (1871) were born there. By 1873, they moved to Cincinnati where their remaining six children were born: Bernadina or Della (1874); Frank, Jr. (1875); John Bernard or Ben (1877); William (1879) - this was my grandfather; Marian Agnes (1880) and Marian Theresa [Sister Pauline] (1882). They were all Roman Catholics. Any information that would enable me to tie in with the German (Hannover) background or current family members of the GIESKE family in the USA would be greatly appreciated.

STODIECK, Russ
eMail address: russstodieck@sbcglobal.net

(English:) I am researching the STODIECK or STODICK family from Hanover, Germany. Henry Herman STODIECK, Sr. was born in Hanover, Germany on 21 September 1838. His father was a successful veterinarian in Hanover. Henry was 18 years old when he immigrated to the US. Henry arrived in the US on the passenger ship "Neptune". The ship left Bremen, Germany and arrived in New Orleans on December 16, 1856. On the passenger list, Henry listed his occupation as a farmer and his name appears on the passenger list as "H. STODICK". Along came our US Civil War (1861-1865), an he was drafted into the 9th Ohio Infantry, Company G., where he served throughout the entire war. I discovered, from "The Roster of Union Soldiers, Ohio 1861-1865", Volume 4, that he was listed on the roster and that the spelling of the last name was STODICK, Henry, 9th Inf. Co. G. and "Stodick, Henry", 9th Inf. (3 months, 1861) Co. G. After the civil war, he settled at Cincinnati, Ohio where he married a German girl named Mary SCHWENSER from Minster, Auglaize, Ohio. They were married in the town of Hamilton. In the 1880 Federal census of Chicago, Illinois, Henry changed the spelling of the last name from STODICK to STODIECK.

I am not sure when brother William STODICK immigrated came to the US, but he settled at St. Louis and was a dry goods salesman. Later he opened his own store. He married Elizabeth BLAETZ. He too, later changed the spelling of the last name from STODICK to STODIECK. This is where my story stops. I do not know the parents of Henry and William STODICK or STODIECK from Hanover, Germany. If you would like to contribute to my research, please send me an email with any and all information about our family. Thanks.

I am researching family of Matthias or Martin (known as Motts) MASSMANN, born in 1801 or 1811, who immigrated to the USA on or about 26 September 1836, along with his family -- his wife Mary Elisabeth BIERMANN, age 36; his son, Bernhard MASSMANN, age 2 years old; and his sister, Anna Maria MASSMANN, 22 years old. We have the original passport paper, No. 980 of the register, issued by the Royal Great British Hannovarian Office stating that he left "through Bremen to North America." We believe he and his family were Catholic. He settled in Warren County, Missouri. We have a list of his descendants, but no names prior to this Matthias. We do not, at the present time, have a connection to Anna Maria MASSMANN's descendants. We would appreciate knowing any information of sibling or parents of Matthias and Anna Maria MASSMANN or Mary Elisabeth BIERMANN. Thank you!

I am searching any information about descendants of my KNIGGE or HAHNE ancestors. They were from Hanover Germany. I do not know what village they are from in Hanover. Maria Sophia HAHNE immigrated to the US in 1858. My great-grandfather, Frederick Johann KNIGGE, immigrated to the US prior to 1860. He married my great-grandmother, Maria Sophia HAHNE, on 23 November 1861, in the Emanuel Church (United Church of Christ) at Bensonville Illinois. They had three children while living in that area. August Frederick, Anna Margerethe, and Franz Albert are their given names. Frederick was born 12 February 1830. Marie was born 17 November 1839. I believe that Marie's father's name is Frederick HAHNE. Frederick and Marie moved to Fort Dodge Iowa in 1864 or 1865 and lived there for the remainder of their lives. Their children (born at Fort Dodge) are Frederick Johann Wilhelm, Karl Wilhelm Ludwig, and Emma Marie Augusta KNIGGE. They also had three other children who died in a dyptheria epidemic. I feel certain that other family members immigrated to America with them but have been unable to locate them. I am searching for other persons named HAHNE or KNIGGE who are related to them. I am also searching for any information about where they were born in Germany. Any information will be appreciated. Thank you.

I am just starting research on my 2nd grandmother, Justenia MAHLER, born 1 March 1847 at Hannover, Germany. Both of her parents were also born there, also, according to the 1880 Federal Census for Wayne county, Pennsylvania. According to family tradition, Justenia immigrated. to the USA abou. 1850, after the death of her parents in Germany. She married 17 September 1870, at Millville, Columbia, Pennsylvania, Wesley Frederick RODGERS / ROGERS who was born in Lackawaxen, Pike Co, PA, 9 July 1845. They had 5 boys: Harry F., Ralph E., Charles A., Clarence E., Hurbert R., all born at Honesdale, Wayne county, Pennsylvania and 1 daughter: MayBelle Justine, born Yonkers, New York. As Justenia MAHLER was so young at time of immgration, she must have lived with someone, but no mention of her is found in the in the 1850 or 1860 censuses that I have searched. Where do I go from here? Any ideas?

I am in search of Frederick BOOKMILLER of Hanover, Germany. Frederick, along with his wife Lena (?) and his children: 1. Augustus George born 3 April 1846 in Hanover, Germany; 2. Sophia C., born 2 July 1848 in Hanover, Germany; 3. Minnie born Hanover, Germany. The obituary of Augustus states that he immigrated to America when he was eight years of age. This would make his arrival in America about 1854. The following reference tells something about the family. Biographical Sketches of Early Settlers in Northwestern Montgomery County (from 1897 biographical Record)"...... Miss. Sophia BOOKMILLER, who was born 2 July 1848, and is a daughter of Frederick BOOKMILLER. Frederick BOOKMILLER was born in Germany and married there. By his first wife he had 3 children, Augustus, Sophie and Minnie. The mother of these children died and he married again, also in Germany, came to the United Stated with his family and is now living at Toledo, Ohio......" Anyone having information on this family, please contact me directly.
