ADAMS, Karen NEIFING
eMail address: angel@adcomsys.net

(Roman Catholic?)

I am searching for the NEIFING and STANNBAUGH families from Hannover, Prussia. I am looking for parents, siblings, marriage records, emigration date/place. Mathias NEIFING was born 4 January 1816, died 10 March 1886 at Pontiac, Illinois. He married Anna STANNBAUGH, born 19 February 1820, died 21 July 1902 at Chicago, Illinois. They were married in Prussia 20 August 1843. Their children were Anna, born 1844 in Germany; Emma, born 2 December 1846 in Germany; John, born 1884/1887 in Illinois; and Mary born 1849 in Illinois. I think they were Catholic. Also, have Margareta NEIFING born 16 February 1826 at Osborg / Augsberg Germany. She lived at Chicago and Peoria Illinois. She came to the US about 1853. Trier is also listed as a possible town the NEIFINGS and STANNBAUGHs came from in Germany. Any info appreciated.

BECKMAN, Joan
eMail address: JBeck88803@aol.com

(Lutheran)

I am researching my husbands great-great-grandparents the surnames of BECKMAN or BECKMANN. Christian BECKMAN or BECKMAN, Lutheran faith, was born 23 July 1822 at Hannover, Germany (all it states on his naturalization papers is he came from the Kingdom of Hanover). His father's name was Henry BECKMAN, he had a brother named Henry and a sister named Justena BECKMAN, born 25 May 1825 at Hanover, Germany. Justena BECKMAN married a Henry WOLTER, born 4 April 1821 at Hannover, Germany. Christian BECKMAN also had a nephew named Fred BECKMAN, born 1844 at Hannover, Germany. His father's name was Henry BECKMAN, his mothers name was Fredericka Fraubazan. Christian BECKMAN married Doretta WOLTER in 1855 at Saegertown, Pennsylvania. Doretta WOLTER was born 16 July 1837 at Drakes Mills, Cambridge Springs, Pennsylvania. Her father's name was Henry WOLTER born 1800-1801 at Hannover, Germany. Her brothers name was John WOLTER, born 1840 in Pennsylvnaia. Doretta WOLTER died 24 January 1894 at Drakes Mills, Cambridge Springs, Pennsylvania. All the children of Christian and Doretta BECKMAN were born in Pennsylvania: Henry, born 1856, died 1861; Hannah, born 1858, died 1926; John F., born 1862, died 1906; William H., born 1865, died 1934; Fred G., born 1867, died 1935; Rosetta, born 1869, died 1946; Emma, born 1872, died 1961; and Charley, born 1874, died 1941. I need help in finding information on Christian BECKMAN from Hannover, Germany.

BROOKS (Mellenbrook), Kayle
eMail address: Kilowat357@aol.com

I am looking for parents, siblings, cousins, and especially American or German descendants of Jobst Heinrich WESTERFELD, born 1790's at Husede, Kreis Wittlage, by Bad Essen, in Osnabrueck district, Hannover. (There are 2 WESTERFELDs in LDS records for Husede, 1770's, including another Jobst Heinrich, perhaps an uncle.) Jobst Heinrich WESTERFELD married Gertrud MOELLENBROCK, changed his name to hers due to an inheritance, and had 7 children: 6 girls, one boy. Cousins in this line (unknown) are all blood WESTERFELDs. Did other Westerfelds emigrate, or remain in Osnabrueck area?

J.H.W's only son, Gerhard Caspar "Henry" MOELLENBROCK (born 1832), married Marie Engel DRIFTMEIER or STOLTE. They emigrated with three children (Heinrich, Hermann, Engel) in 1865 from Bremen to New York. On the ship they traveled with a 19 year old WESTERFELD male, along with a large STOLTE family. I strongly suspect they were "helped over" by WESTERFELD or STOLTE families living in Ohio, but I do not know who or where they were. The emigrant Moellenbrocks disappeared, somewhere "in Ohio," for first 15 years. By 1880 they are found, now with 7 children, at Olmsted Falls Ohio, (near Berea, Elyria and Cleveland Ohio) -- a town without Stoltes or Westerfelds. The emigrant Gerhard "Henry" MOELLENBROCK had four living sisters, all blood WESTERFELD descendants. One, Marie Engel Mollenbrock HALLMAN, acted as sponsor of a child. Hoping to find HALLMAN descendants who may know the answers to this question: what are the married names of the three remaining sisters? Did Marie HALLMAN and/or her sisters stay in Germany, leaving Gerhard some German cousins?

I am researching Dr. Wilhelm Adolph HAVEMANN born 27 September 1823 at Oberdorf, Hannover (Niedersachen) Germany. He died at New Bremen, Auglaize county, Ohio 14 July 1899. The father of Dr. Wilhelm was Dr. Johann Georg Havemann whose possible parents were Peter Havemann and Rebecca Catherina SCHROEDER of Bülkau, Hannover. Siblings born to Dr. Havemann and his wife Louise Aurora Beata WASMANN (see below) at Oberndorf were Charlotte Catherina; Elizabeth Fridericka; Aurura Johanna; Julie Luise; Dr. Friederich Carl Havemann; Aurora Sophia Havemann; Elise Wilhelmina Havemann, George Wilhelm Ferdinand; Heinrich Eduard (emigrated to New Orleans, USA); and Georg August Havemann, born at Neuhaus Oste. Dr. Wilhelm Adolph Havermann and and Dr. Friederich Carl Havermann attended university at Gottingen, Germany. I do not know the university of the father.

Louise Aurora Beata WASMANN was born 18 February 1773 at Gifhorn, Niedersachen (Hannover), died where and when? She married Dr. William Adolph Havemann 2 September 1781 at Oberdorf, Niedersachen Her father was Johann Daniel WASMANN, customs administrator at Grifhorn. Her mother was Beata Charlotte (unknown maiden name) GREVEN of Oberdorf. Father of Beata was Friederich Sebastian GREVE, an administrator at Oberdorf in 1798. Her husband was a Captain GREVEN / GREVE. I am looking for more informatiomn regarding the Greves of Oberdorf and wonder how to find out military information about Captain Greve /Greven.

Johann Daniel WASSMAN was toll administrator at Gifhorn, Niedersachsen (Hannover in 1770). His sons were Joachin Carl Friedrich Wassmann, born 19 January 1770 at Gifhorn; Johann Daniel August WASMANN, born 2 November 1771 at Grifhorn. His wife was Beata Charlotte GREVEN of Oberdorf. I wish to contact and would like to hear from anyone else working on these lines. While I have eMail, I do not have access to the WWW.
Webmaster's Note: Have you looked at FHL microfilm of Oberdorf civil registration (1823-1915), Gifhorn court records of marriages (1583-1800) or Neuhaus (an der Oste) churchbook (1715-1875)? Also the surname search section shows one Wasmann, 2 Havermann and 22 Greve citations. Matrikel registers exist for the Universiät Göttingen and other nearby Universities which might reveal others of your lines who attended there.

BUNKERS, Suzanne
eMail address: suzanne.bunkers@mankato.msus.edu

I am searching for the name BUENKER in the Linden, Hannover, area. My great-great-grandparents, Theodore (born 15 January 1815) and Elizabeth (born 13 March 1815) BUENKER left Linden, Hannover, in the early 1840s for the U.S. They settled first at Cincinnati, then Guttenberg and New Vienna, Iowa. Eventually, around 1880, they went west to Remsen Iowa, where they died and are buried. The name BUENKER (BÜNKER) was eventually anglicized to BUNKERS and BUNKER. Any help will be much appreciated.

I am seeking information or contacts relative to the ancestors and / or descendants of my great grandparents Johann Heinz PAPE born in Cadenberge 30 July 1831 and Juliane Margaretta PAPE (need SCHRODER) born in nearby Geversdorf 22 March 1831. Their known children were Anna Katrina Sofia PAPE (my grandmother) born 27 April 1858, Claus Rudolph PAPE born 6 May 1864, Emma S. PAPE born 14 July 1867 and Peter William PAPE born 9 August 1869. All of these children were born in Cadenberge and emigrated to the United States with their mother and subsequently lived their entire lives in the United States. I have full details of each of their spouses and descendants. It is believed that Johann Heinz PAPE and Juliane Margaretta PAPE may have had other children or that Johann Heinz PAPE had children not of this marriage. The PAPE's have lived in Cadenberge or the immediate area for over 200 years. My prior attempts to make contact by mail have gone unanswered. Any information or help in gaining additional information or making contacts with Cadenberge PAPE'S will be greatly appreciated.
Webmaster's Note: While you do not indicate a religion, the Hannover region is predominently Protestant. You might visit your nearest Family History Center to rent and view the Kadenberge / Cadenberg parish register (1715-1852) on FHL microfilm (3 reels)

(Roman Catholic)

I am searching for the ancestors and place of origin of George William (Georg Wilhelm) GELLENBECK. He was born in the Kingdom of Hannover 26 August 1826. He emigrated to the United States in 1843 or 1844 and lived for a time at Cincinnati, Ohio. From there he went to St. Louis, Missouri where he joined the First Dragoons in 1850. He married Ellen O'BRIEN in Minnesota and was discharged from the Army at Ft. Snelling, Minnesota in 1855. His marriage was in a Catholic Church and his family were Catholic, so I am assuming he was of that faith in Hannover. Many years of research have failed to unearth anything more specific regarding his his origins. I am becoming desperate at this point since I will be visiting that area of Germany in September 1998 and will be very disappointed if I cannot visit his native village. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Webmaster's Note: After searching the obvious -- the IGI (Immigrant Genealogical Index) and the Ancestral File at your nearest FHC -- you best try Die Ahnenstammkartei des Deutschen Volkes at an FHC.

KLINE, Dianne eMail address: jck4@bright.net
(Luthern)

I am tracing the German roots of the Friedrich and Marie (Reka? -first name nee FUHRHOP) ELLING family. Friedrich was born circa 1813 in Hannover and Marie was born circa 1814-15 in Prussia. They emigrated in 1859 and began farming in Northwest Ohio. Their children were Maria Sophia, Johann Heinrich, Frederick and Anna Maria Margareta.

I am to the point of finding the origin of this family in Germany. I have notes from one family member stating Freidrich's birthplace as Stelichte Kirchspeiel Walsrode, Kreis Fallingsbostel, Hannover. However, other notes say that the birthplace may have been a place called Tiedel (I can't find this on map) and that Frederich's father was Herr von TIEDEL. I also have not been able to find any info on the FUHRHOP family. Does anyone have ideas on how to proceed in proving the birthplace and in searching for more of the earlier family? I have located Stelichte, but not Tiedel. The family was Evangelisch Lutheran.

KNIGGE, Carol A.
8206 Penny Lane, Richmond, Illinois 60071-9764, U.S.A.

(Lutheran)

I am searching for the ancestors and descendants of Johann Friedrich Christian KRUGER / KROEGER / (KRÖGER), born 22 October 1806 at Anemolter, near Nienburg, bei Weser, in Hannover. He was the son of Johann Friedrich KRUGER and Anne Marie Elisabeth OSTERMEYERS. He married in 1834 to Sophia Maria "Dorothea" Charlotte SCHMIDT. They had three sons that I know of: "Johann" Heinrich August Friedrich KRUGER, born 1838; Heinrich "Friedrich" Christian KRUGER, born 1841 and Dietrich KRUGER, born circa 1843. All three sons were born at Anemolter. I found the family in the 1852 census of Anemolter, Germany. Second son, Friedrich, eloped with Wilheminia SCHARNINGHAUSEN and came to America in 1862. There were married at Long Grove, Lake County Illinois 29 July 1862. They lived in Lake County, Illinois the rest of their lives. What happened to the brothers of Friedrich?

Also looking for information on ancestors of Wilhemina SCHARNINGHAUSEN, born 30 May 1833 possibly at Schinna, near Neinburg, bei Weser, Hannover. Her parents may have been Rufus Christian SCHARNINGHAUSEN and Maria HARKMEYER. Wilhelmina had two know sisters: Charlotte, married Henry HOELTJE, and Caroline, married Henry WEBER. Both came to Lake County, Illinois; and one brother, Wilhelm SCHARNINGHAUSEN, who came to Lake County. Also looking for the ancestors and descendants of Johann Heinrich Friedrich KNIGGE, born 28 February 1794 at Suttorf, near Neustadt an der Rubenberge, Hannover, and his wife Catharine Marie "Dorothee" HOGREFE, born 12 January 1798 in Suttorf. They had nine children all born at Suttorf: Heinrich, born 1818; Dorothea, born 1819, married Heinrich FEDDELER at Basse, Hannover; Friedrich, born 1822; August born 1824; Ludwig born 1825; Dietrich born 1829; Dietrich, born circa 1831; Wilhelm, born 1833 (my gr. gr. grandfather); and Phillip born 1837. Wilhelm came to America in 1847 with two brothers, August and Ludwig and his married sister, Dorothea and brother-in-law. They all settled in Illinois. Also looking for KNIGGE families anywhere.

KOEHLER (Kohler?) family information is needed for William KOEHLER, born about 1872. Married to Sophia ____ born about 1875. Their children were William C. KOEHLER (born 30 May 1896 at Hannover, Germany); Frieda KOEHLER (born about 1899), and Marie KOEHLER (born about 1902). They emigrated to New York City about 1904. I need birth, baptism, marriage, emigration records and especially correspondence with relatives! Thank you for your help.

LASSITER, Donald C. (Kenny and Judy)
eMail address: judon@coastalnet.com

(Evangelical Lutheran)

My sister and I are looking for information on the KUMM family from Alsace-Loraine or Hanover, Germany area. Christian KUMM was a railroad signalman from that area and his son, Ernst Ferdinand KUMM, a blacksmith, married Marie Dorothea EBISCH in September 1884 (marriage certificate #733). Their son Ernest (Ernst) KUMM was born in Germany or the USA in 1886. We are looking for information from Germany concerning emigration and any or history.

The marriage license was issued/approved by the "Main Marriage Registrar's Office in Hannover on 30 October 1885". The number is #733 and the registrar's "standin" was someone named STROEDEL with a fee of 50 pfennigs. The cerificate reads in part: 1. The blacksmith Ernst Ferdinand KUMM appeared before the registrar for the purpose of matrimony with their 2 witnesses to which they know to, Evangelical religion, born 18 November 1855 in Schonfield County of Randow living in hannover, Schmiedesttrasse 48 (street). Future address: Kleine Duvenstrasse. Son of the deceased parents railroad-operator Christian KUMM and Wilekmine nee DITTNER, both last living in Tantow. 2. Marie Dorothea Charlotte EBISCH, maid. Both witnesses be known also by the registrar of Lutheran religion born 4 December 1854 in Salzhemmendorf (City of Lavenstein) address Dalzhemmendorf. Daugther of parents master shoemaker Heinrich Konrad Ebisch and Marie Dorothea Elizabeth nee TASMANN...... Any help is appreciated.
Webmaster's Note: The is one reference to Ebisch (Zwickau, Saxony?) and one to Ditner (from Ammertzwiller, Alsace in the Surname Search section of the FHL Catalog. There is microfilm for Ammertzwiller covering Catholic churchbooks (1687-1965) and civil registration (1794-1882). After searching the obvious -- the IGI (Immigrant Genealogical Index) and the Ancestral File at your nearest FHC -- you might try Die Ahnenstammkartei des Deutschen Volkes at an FHC.

I would appreciate knowing about the following family. I do not know where Jakob was from in Germany or Martha's first husbands name. Jacob FEIST was born 21 July 1841, Germany (my great grandfather) married Martha DIRKS (born 14 May 1849, Hannover / Hannover, Germany (great grandmother) circa: 1876 / 1877 in Germany (village unknown). Siblings: Frances A. FEIST, born April 1877 in Germany; Jakob, Martha and Frances emigrated 1880 from Germany to the U.S.A. and settled at Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne county, Pennsylvania, where Jakob and Martha had two other children including my grandfather, Jakob FEIST. I do not have access to LDS or FHC, however I have a library which has a microfilm reader. Any information greatly appreciated. Thanking you in advance.

MYRTLE, Ron and Lori
eMail address: patches@pld.com

(Lutheran)

I am seeking information about my great-grandparents. Johann SCHLUTERBUSCH and Wilhelminna WOHLERS. They immigrated from Bremmen, Germany to New York in 1901. SCHLUTERBUSCH was born in Schwarfarden, Germany, 1 April 1873 and WOHLERS was born in Bruchhausen, Germany, 27 January 1871. They were married in Bruchhausen, Germany, 1 January 1899. SCHLUTERBUSCH served in the German army, 1895-1897. WOHLERS had a brother, Fredrick Wilhem, who immigrated to the United States in 1896. He also served in the German Army, 1881-1884, 23rd Infantry Regiment at Hanover. WOHLERS parents names are, Dietriet WOHLERS and Kathrine FRANKE. SCHLUTERBUSCH and WOHLERS had two female children born in Bruchhausen, Germany. Marie born 13 May 1893 and Dorothy born 22 March 1898. I am not sure that these two children are SCHLUERBUSCH. There were seven more children born in the United States. The religion was Lutheran.
Webmaster's Note: The Court of Bruchhausen has census records on 3 reels of FHL microfilm (1608-1870) and 1 reel of FHL microfilm of court records of marriages (1603-1952) and civil registration (1811-1813). The surname search section of the FHL Catalog contains reference to one line of the Wöhlers line from Hannover on FHL microfilm #1183602 - item 8, filed under Schnehage. It would appear that your search in Germany should include the Woehlers spelling (with and ö umlaut).

RASFELD, Pamela
eMail address: prasf@juno.com

(Roman Catholic)

I am looking for the town of origin of our RASFELD ancestors. Joseph (also known as Herm, August, Henry and Anthony on various documents!) born 1838, married Elizabeth MARCUS. Three of their children came to the US. Heinrich B. RASFELD was born on June 10, 1864 in Germany. He and his sister left the port of Bremen on the Strassburg, and arrived in Baltimore, Maryland 1 September 1882. They settled at Cincinnati, Ohio. His sister Katherine / Catherine was born 1 October 1865 at Hanover. A younger brother, Conrad Gustave, born 10 March 1867 in Germany, emigrated from Bremen on the "SS Nurnberg" and arrived at Baltimore, Maryland 17 September 1885. He also settled in Cincinnati. Family history says that he left Germany and went to Holland to avoid military draft. All three siblings married and have descendents. They were Catholics. Any advice on new sources would be appreciated. I'm concentrating on Hannover District. I've done the IGI, AF, written about 6 Rasfelds in northern Germany in German- no response, looked at a few Catholic church films from the area, checked the city of Hannover. I have the history book of the town of Raesfeld and looked at their Catholic church films. Haven't been Raesfelds in the town since mid-1700's. I checked their death certificates and some marriage license applications. I looked for Katherine's obituary, and haven't checked for the guys yet. Cemetery records- nada. Are there any genealogy chat groups in the US or Germany for Hannover? Help! Thanks.
Webmaster's Note: Be sure to check Die Ahnenstammkartei des Deutschen Volkes at an FHC - it could well be your best bet if nothing has surfaced in the LDS IGI or the Ancestral File at your FHC. See also the "Hannover Genealogy Sources" below.

eMail address: murieler@earthlink.net

Johannes Willelmus VONDERSCHMALL (1731-1795), my g-g-g-grandfather came to America from Hannover, Germany in 1750. First known place is Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where his son Johannes VONDERSCHMALL, Jr. was born in 1756. The family went to New York as his wife, Mary, is buried in St. Paul's Church Yard in 1782. (My assumption is that they went there when the British occupied New York City.) The son, became John SMALL and fought for the British as a Major during the Revolution War. After the war he settled in Prince Edward Island. (I believe St. Paul's is Episcopal). This is all I know of Johannes. Hoping to learn any thing of the family history in Hannover or the United States. Thanks for your help.

SCHWACKE, Edward

(Lutheran)

I am looking for help on information on my great-great-grandfather, SCHWAKE Augustus Heinrich (Henry), born 15 May 1833 near the towns of Cappel and Dorum in the Province of Hannover. He was Lutheran. He had a sister Emma SCHWAKE and a brother, Adolphus Hinrich SCHWAKE, born 1844 at the same towns of Cappel and Dorum. Both were apothekers and started a pharmacy at Charleston, South Carolina, USA. Augustus SCHWAKE was fifteen when he immigrated to the US. I am trying to locate any records from the area to identify his parents and any other brothers and sisters. When he arrived in the States, he phonetically changed the spelling of his surname to SCHWACKE, which I am told, is the softer sound of the name. The area of Germany where he originated, halfway between Cuxhaven and Bremerhaven, had a rather strong dialect. I am looking for any help or information and plan a trip to the area to look for information but really don't know where to start.

(Roman Catholic)

I am researching my great-grandfather Anton WASSMANN, born about 1816. This is the name that he used in the United States and was listed on the Passenger List when he emigrated. I have also seen him listed as George Anton and Anton George WASSMANN. According to the Passenger list that I found him on, his last address was Hannover and his birthplace was Hannover, but the 1870 U.S. census listed his birthplace as Bavaria. He sailed from Bremen on the ship "Johannes Wilhelmine" and arrived at Baltimore, Maryland 19 July 1862. He was a bookbinder by trade and his religion was Catholic. I have no record of him prior to his departure from Germany, or between his arrival at Baltimore in 1862 and his appearance in the Cincinnati, Ohio city directory in 1867. At that time he was married to ANNA (STRIEBEL?). I am trying to locate his birthplace in Germany and any information about him prior to 1862. Thank you for your help.

John Herman SCHMIDT, born 1760 at Ankum, Germany married Elizabeth THURMAN there. Their son John Henry SCHMIDT, born 5 August 1793 married Gertrude Antonette BILLENKAMP, born 11 August 1794. They were married 25 February 1815 at Ankum, Germany. This family was Catholic and I am looking for the brothers and sisters of John Henry SCHMIDT and the brothers and sisters of Gertrude BILLENKAMP. John Henry and Gertrude brought their family to America in the 1830's. Prior to coming to America the family attended St. Nickolas Catholic Church at Ankum. Has anyone researched the records of this church?

STUERKE, Cecil

Marie INSELMAN was born 29 November 1869 at Zeven Germany. Her immigration to America included a stop over in England. Her brother, Henry, and she lived their later years in Concordia Missouri. A brother Fred moved to Orlando Oklahoma. A brother John INSELMAN stayed in Germany as did the parents, John INSELMAN and Elizabeth NEUHAUS. Berthold SCHAIFER was a cousin to Marie, Henry and Fred. Berthold's mother, Anna NEUHAUS was a sister to Elizabeth. Anna moved to Hildesheim Germany when she married Mr. Schaifer. Berthold moved near Concordia Missouri for his education. For Zeven Germany, I find only one LDS microfilm of church records. I've looked there without results. I believe the Inselman family was Lutheran and the film is for a Catholic church. The specific date of birth should make things easier, but where else should I look to trace earlier generations?
Webmaster's Note: Be sure to start by checking the IGI and the Ancstral File at your nearest LDS Family History Center. There are four listings for Neuhaus in the FHL Surname Search section. Check for Inselman in Die Ahnenstammkartei des Deutschen Volkes

THIES, Terry

I am searching for information on my great grandparents: Friedrich THIES (born 21 November 1824 at Mandelsloh, Hannover) and Louisa Maria D=DCKER THIES. Their oldest known daughter, Johanne THIES MONKEMEIER was born 28 May 1851 at Holtensen, Hannover. Their next oldest child, William THIES was born 9 March 1854 at St. Louis Missouri. Friedrich and Louisa settled in the Freeport, Illinois area where Friedrich died 14 February 1867. He is buried at North Grove Church, Ogle county, Illinois. Louisa moved her family to the Iowa Falls, Iowa area following Friedrich's death. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I am seeking information regarding my g-grandfather, Henry Charles Wilhelm KNUST. He was born 10 January 1850 in Hannover province. He emigrated to the USA in 1875 or 1876 through Galveston, Texas. His father was named Christian or Charles William KNUST and reportedly was also from Hannover province. He was a banker, died at a fairly young age and was married to Eleanor. She reportedly lived to be 96 and died about 1916 or 1917 in Hannover province. I understand a number of KNUST' come from Obermarsberg, a small town southwest of Hanover.
