I am looking for information on Johann GAHN and his wife,
Elisabeth (last name unknown), both born about 1804 in
Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany. They married in Germany and four of
their children were born in Germany. They immigrated to the
United States in 1840, sailing from Le Havre on the ship "Silvie
de Grasse" and arriving at the port of New York on 27 August
1840. The children immigrating with them were: Conrad, 11;
Elisabeth, 5; Maria, 4; and Marguerite, 1. Johann died March
1880 in Sandusky county Ohio and Elisabeth died November 1891 in
Sandusky county Ohio. Their religion was Lutheran. They
attended the Salem Lutheran Church in Sandusky county (near
Fremont), which was a German-speaking church. They later
attended Faith Lutheran Church after the Salem Church
congregation split. Faith Lutheran back then was also known as
Mud Creek, St. Paul or Hetrick. It is on U.S. 20, west of
Fremont, Ohio.

I am looking for any information about George NOLL. From what I
have found, he immigrated to New York, USA from Schwarz,
Oberhessen, Hessen, Germany in 1881 with his wife, Maria, and
children Maria, George, Heinrich, and Cathrina. George was born
23 April 1841. He moved from New York to South Carolina and then
to St. Louis, Missouri. Charles and John NOLL were born in South
Carolina. George was the son of Johann Heinrich NOLL and
Cathrina BECKER. I would appreciate any help that I can get.
GARCIA, Leona

I am looking for the ancestors of Johann Georg HERMAN, possibly
HERMANN, born 16 December 1864 at Hussenbach-Linevo Osero,
Saratov, Volga, Russia and his sons, Johann Georg HERMAN, born
1883, Heinrich HERMAN, born 1892, and Fredrich HERMAN, born 1891.
The sons immigrated to the United States in the early 1900's. We
know the family is originally from Hesse, Germany, but we do not
know where in Hesse or when they were there.

I am researching the Andreas LAPP and Barbura KRAUSHAAR families
of Hesse-Kassel, Germany. My great-grandfather was Edward Andrew
LAPP who was born 14 December 1861 at Buffalo, Erie county, New
York. His parents were Andreas LAPP, born 1827 in "Kus Hessen"
and Barbura KRAUSHAAR born 1834 in "Kus Hessen," per the 1880
U.S. census for Upper Alton, Madison county Illinois. On this
census (which does not include Edward Andrew LAPP) is a sister
Katie LAPP born about 1866 at Upper Alton (?), Illinois. Edward
Andrew LAPP married Julia Anna WINN on 15 October 1890 at
Whitehall, Illinois. On the marriage license application, Edward
lists his place of birth as Buffalo, New York and his parents as
from Hesse-Kassel, Germany. Family oral history is minimal and I
am unaware of any family papers. Edward and Julia had the
following chidlren: 1) Walter Edward born 9 October 1892 at
Upper Alton, Illinois; 2) George Ralph born 12 December 1893 at
Whitehall, Illinois, died February 1963 at Miami, Dade county,
Florida; and 3) Winnona Elva born 23 April 1894 at Whitehall,
Illinois, died after 1950. There may have been a set of
stillborn twins prior to their migrating to Flagler county,
Florida where they had two more children: 4) Eleda Katherine born
14 June 1899; and 5) Louise Lillian (my grandmother) born 27 May
1904, died 1990 in Volusia county, Florida. Edward Andrew was in
the US Merchant Marine during part of the time he lived in
Illinois. His father, Andreas, was a wagonmaker. My
great-grandparents attended the Luthern church. I am interested
in finding Andreas LAPPs parents and siblings, date of
immigration, and the parents and siblings of Barbara KRAUSHAAR,
who we were told he married "on the boat." Since finding the
place of birth on the 1880 census, I am wondering what "Kus" is.
A dukedom, a duchy? Is it even a place? The census states their
parents were born there also.

I am researching my grandfather, Jacob John HILL, who was born at
Reckrod, Hesse-Nassau, Germany on 14 November 1871. He died at
Rochester, Monroe county, New York USA on 14 February 1950. He
immigrated to the U.S. about 1888. I am very interested in
learning more about a brewery that he co-owned in Germany. It
was called Hill or Hill's Brudern Brauerei (Hill or Hill's
Brothers Brewery). I understand that at the time it was one of
Germany's largest breweries and I was also told that it was
destroyed during World War I. Jacob married Regina Josepha
NEIDERT on 23 November 1897 in Rochester, New York. Regina was
born 25 December 1874 at Steinbach, Hunfeld, Germany. She died 1
March 1941 in Rochester, New York. My grandfather had three
brothers: Joseph, Albert and Emil. Albert remained in Germany.
He also had three sisters: Caroline, Katherine Anna and Theresa.
Katherine immigrated to the U.S. and died at Rochester, New York.
Regina had four sisters and two brothers (one who died in
Germany). All immigrated to the USA. The children of my
grandparents are: Peter, Milton (died as a baby), Albert,
Clarence, Oscar (my father), Lillian, Jacob, Jr., Rosemary,
William and Joseph. All have died but Rosemary and her memory is
not good.

(Protestant ?)
I am looking for any information on Johannes STAHL, born 2
February 1827 in the Hesse-Kassel region. His father's name was
Johannes and his mother's name is likely Maria. He may have had
a brother named Heinrich. I found a Heinrich STALL who was
married in Fulton county Illinois in 1852, but no other traces of
him. The younger Johannes immigrated to North American sometime
between 1836 and 1849. In the U.S. he was known as John STELL.
His citizenship certificate and his marriage registration show
his name as John STALL. I have seen the name in a book as STILL
and I have a picture of my grandmother on which is hand-written
STAHL. He married Rebecca RAY (an Irish immigrant) on 8 December
1851 in Fulton County Illinois, USA. He died 6 December 1898 in
Fulton county, Illinois. My grandmother told me that Johannes
came into the USA through the port of New Orleans (as a stowaway)
on a ship and made his way up to Illinois through St. Louis with
only $5.00. He eventually acquired a farm of over 600 acres.
Johannes and Rebecca had four children: Mary Ann STELL (born
1854, died 12 July 1855); Arthur STELL (born 12 November 1855,
died 16 January 1928); Roseanne STELL (born 4 April 1859, died 9
October 1941); and William Dexter STELL (born 18 July 1868, died
11 January 1945). William is my great-grandfather. I believe
that the family was Protestant as that is what Johannes'
granddaughter was.
KARGES, Robert
eMail address: rbkarges@prodigy.net
I am looking for the ancestors of my great-grandfather, George
KARGES, who, according to the 1880 U.S. census, was born in
Kassel, Germany in 1837. He immigrated to the United States in
1872 and resided in Clay county, Minnesota as a farmer and later
at Fargo, North Dakota. He married Barbara FRANK who was also
born in Kassel in 1836. Both died in 1918 at Fargo, North
Dakota. They had seven children: Mary, Barbara, and Emma who
were all born in Kassel; William born in New York; and Amelia,
Henry and John born in Minnesota.
KREINER, Mary
eMail address: MCM736@aol.com
I am looking for the family of Adam KREINER who was born in
Limburg, Hesse, Prussia, Germany in 1826. In 1850 he was living
in New Albion, Cattaraugus county, New York. He married Ottili
(last name unknown) who was born in 1831 at Frankfort,
Hesse-Nassau, Germany. Their children were: Odelia (born
1851), Julia and Josephine (twins), Adam, Ferdinand, George,
Frank, Mary and Albert (Bertie). I don't know when Adam and
Ottili died. I am assuming, however, that they died at New
Albion, New York, USA.
MANOLATOS, Sylvia HOHMANN

(Lutheran)
I am researching Christopher HOHMANN and his wife, Catherine
Elisabeth LAMSBACH, who immigrated to Baltimore or Annapolis,
Maryland in 1868. They were born around 1840 in Hesse-Kassel,
Germany. Others say they came from Escherode which is near
Hesse-Kassel. Both of them died in the vicinity of Baltimore,
Maryland around the turn of the century (circa 1900). They were
married in Germany before they immigrated to the U.S. in 1868,
having several children, the youngest being my grandfather,
Henry, who was six at the time. They had probably been married
10-15 years (married circa 1853-1858). They settled at
Baltimore and Glen Burnie, Maryland when they arrived in the U.S.
Their religion was Lutheran.
MCCANN, Janet

I am looking for information on August HERTZER, who was born 6
August 1857 in Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany and died in 1935 in New
Jersey, USA. His father was also named August HERTZER and his
mother was Alvina SAPPER. August married Eva Katherine (Kate)
SHERMAN (date and place unknown). Kate was born in New York
City, New York around 1852. She was the daughter of Jacob and
Josephine SHERMAN. Kate died in New Jersey sometime around 1945.
They had a daughter named Josephine HERTZER. I don't know when
they immigrated to America or what their religion was.
PATRYLICK, Kathryn
eMail address: Tal88@aol.com
I am researching John MOTZ and his wife, Amelia, who immigrated
to America from Hesse in 1845. I think the name of the ship was
the "Miles". John was 31 years old and Amelia was 29. They
settled at Pottsville, Pennsylvania; he later lived at
Shenandoah, Pennsylvania. I think that John died about 1880. I
do not know when Amelia died. They had 11 children, one of whom
was my grandfather, Benedict MOTZ, who was born in 1866. I would
like to know where in Hesse they came from and Amelia's maiden
name. I understand that MOTZ is found quite frequently in Hesse
from Heidelburg to Karlsruhe. John was a miner in
Pennsylvania.
PUTNAM, Sue
eMail address: sueputs@charter.net
I am researching Lorenz BAUREIS born 1826 in Hessen, Germany, a
tailor by trade. He married Barbara BELGAR born 1830 in Hessen,
Germany. Three sons were born: George, 1863; Marlin, 1865; and
Lorenz, 1867 at New York City. This information was on the New
York 1870 census. Also listed in the household was John BUGIR,
father-in-law, age 85, born in Hessen, Germany. I believe the
name BUGIR is really BELGAR according to other records I have
found. I would like to know more about the BAUREIS family in
Germany. My great-grandfather is Lorenz' son, George BAUREIS
(born 1863); he married Mary KITCHENS at Chicago, Illinois in
1886. He died at Chicago in 1927.
RAMEY, Lorraine

(Calvanists ?)
I am looking for the families of Ferdinand KLAR, born 6 September
1798 in Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany. He died 3 May 1865 in Ohio.
He married Anna Maria BACH who was born 9 June 1799 in Hesse-
Darmstadt, Germany and died 8 November 1874 in Ohio. I am
guessing that Ferdinand and Anna Maria were married between 1821
and 1823, perhaps in the village of Eckhartsborn, Hesse-
Darmstadt, Germany, but certainly in Germany / Prussia. They
left Eckhartsborn for America in 1837. The passenger manifest
shows their arrival at Baltimore, Maryland on 7 November 1837
from Bremen and lists the last residence as Eckhardboom, which I
would translate to be a village called Eckhartsborn. They had
one child: John Conrad KLAR was born 5 October 1823 or 1824 in
Hesse-Darmstadt, and died 16 July 1898 in Ohio. He became a
minister of the German Reformed faith once in America, which
suggests that they were Calvinists rather than Lutherans.
SCHMIDT, Ray
eMail address: resmd1@mchsi.com
My great-great-grandfather was Casper / Caspar SOHL, who was born
at Oberaula, Hessen, Germany in April 1850. He immigrated to New
York City, New York in 1871. Casper's parents were Henry SOHL
and Anna Elizabeth HAPPEL, also from Hessen. Casper married
Margaretha BORMANN in Manhattan, New York on 26 May 1872. They
listed their home address as 118 Delancey Street. I have not
been able to find the name of the church where they were married.
I do not know when they died. In 1900 they were living at 233
Cook Street in Brooklyn (with my great-grandparents, Edward MEYER
and Elizabeth SOHL MEYER). In 1910 they were living at 56
Wyckoff Avenue in Brooklyn, New York. These addresses would
probably be considered in the Bushwick area of Brooklyn. I could
not locate them on either the 1880 or 1920 census. Casper and
Margaretha's children were: Charles, born about 1873; Nicholas,
born about 1874-1875; Elizabeth (married MEYER), born 21 Jun
1876; and Mary, born about 1885.
The parents of Margaretha BORMANN were Johann (John) BORMANN and
Maria TOTH. Johann was born about 1827 and Maria was born about
1829. I'm fairly certain that the BORMANNs immigrated to New
York City, New York in 1852. Other children (all born in New
York City) of John and Maria included Louis, born about 1860;
Nettie, born about 1862; and Elizabeth, born about 1864. In
1880, they lived at 63 Ridge Street in Manhattan (about 2 blocks
from 118 Delancey Street - the 1872 address of Casper and
Margaretha). I could not find them on the 1900 census. Johann
(John) BOHRMANN was still alive on the 1910 census and living
with his daughter Nettie BORMANN HOFFMAN at the age of 82 in the
Ridgewood area of Queens, New York.
SEBLONKA, Peter
eMail address: cathys@uproc.lib.mi.us
I am looking for information on the names BIEGEL, BUCHEL, BICHEL,
and BUGEL of Seligenstadt, Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany. Conrad
Hieronimius BUCHEL, a shoemaker, was present in Seligenstadt in
1756 and on 1 February 1758 his first wife, Maria Eva, died.
Conrad Hieronimius BUCHEL died on 7 September 1785 at the age of
57 (his death entry has the entry "ortus Frankfurt"). One of his
grandsons, Johann George BIEGEL (BUGEL, BIGEL, BEGEL, BIEGLE)
immigrated to America in 1847 and lived at Havershaw, New York
and Lake county Indiana. He died in Chariton county Missouri.
Of the BIEGELs that remained in Seligenstadt, another grandson,
Peter Marcellin BIEGEL (BUGEL) married Anna Maria LOMMEL and
remained at Seligenstadt and his offspring remained there too.
Of the granddaughters, Anna Margaretha BUGEL married Andrew HULT
and Elisabeth BIEGEL (BUGEL) married Joseph Martin WURZEL. There
are also BIEGEL families at Limburg, Camburg, Frankfurt am Main,
Gau Algersheim and Mainz. I would like to share information on
any of the Hessian family named BIEGEL.

(Roman Catholic)
I am researching Peter SCHIPPER who was born at Fuldau, Hessen,
Germany. I am not sure about the spelling of Fuldau, as I am
trying to decipher my great-uncle's handwriting. Peter left
Fuldau in 1781 and went to Neusidel, Banat, Romania. The German
name of the town is Neusiedel auf der Heide (in Romanian it is
known as Uihei). The only other information I have is that he was
Roman Catholic.
WALLISCH, Volker
eMail address: vwallisch@sternpost.de
I am searching for information about my ancestor, Freidrich
MICHEL, who was born 28 February 1820 at Rohrbach,
Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany and immigrated to America as a single
person from Breman with the Konrad MUSCH and Konrad NOSS families
(also from Rohrbach) to the port of Baltimore on the ship
"Rhone". He arrived at Baltimore on 20 September 1847. His
parents remained in Germany. I believe that he went to the
southwest corner of Illinois where other families of Rohrbach
settled. If he married in the United States, I do not know the
name of his wife. This is all the information that I have.
