Nicholas RUB left Wallroth, in the Schluchtern area of Hessen, in
May 1836 and immigrated to America, sailing from Bremen on the
ship "Lucilla" for Richmond, Virginia. He was listed as a tailor
by trade. His future wife, Katherine KRESS, and several other
KRESS families from Wallroth and Schluchtern sailed on the same
ship. I am seeking to make contact with RUB or KRESS relatives
in Hessen to share data.

I am researching the descendants of Philip Peter ANTON, born 26
April 1826 at Huntersblum, Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany. He was the
youngest son of John Jacob and Anna Maria GRASMANN ANTON. He
immigrated to the U.S. on 26 February 1848 and landed in the U.S.
in June 1848. What was his port of departure and port of
arrival? He had a sister named Maria Dorthea ANTON who also
immigrated to the U.S. in 1848. She married Frederick MUHEL, Sr.
(born 5 November 1822 at Interheim, Darmstadt, Germany) on 3
October 1848. Maria and Frederick bought a 40-acre farm in
Germantown, Wisconsin and lived there 21 years, then in 1867,
bought a 240 acre farm in Seymore, Wisconsin. Frederick died at
Seymore in 1899. Maria died 12 January 1899 at Seymore. Where
are the MUEHL heirs located in the U.S?
ALTHOFF, Lucille

I am researching Leonhard SCHANZ born in 1809. He was a native
of Niedernhausen, Amt. Lichtenberg, Kreis Dieburg, Provinz
Starkenburg, Grossherzogthum, Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany.
Leonhard married Margaret Elizabeth BECKER in Pennsylvania in
1834. He was in St. Clair county Illinois in 1844 and that is
where he died 28 February 1853. The children of Leonhard and
Margaret were: Mary, born in Pennsylvania about 1834; Catharine,
born in Pennsylvania about 1836; Barbara, born about 1840; Delia,
born about 1845; and Margaret, born about 1847 in Illinois. I am
looking for birth information on Leonhard, his parents and
siblings.
BARTON, Bea

I am researching the family of Jacob William OESTE, born about
1812 in Hessen-Kassel, died about 1879 in California, probably
Yolo county. He married (in Germany) Anne Catherine VOIGT, born
about 1812 in Kur-Hessen, Germany, died about 1879 or 1880 in
California, probably Yolo county. They immigrated to the United
States in 1854 and settled in Milwaukee, Wisconsin where they
lived for 14 years. In 1868 they and their grown children,
also born in Germany, moved to Yolo county California. Jacob was
a farmer and a hotel-keeper. Their children were: John Henry,
born 21 April 1837; Sophie, born 1841; David Theodore, born 1843;
William born, 10 September 1847; and Carlotta.
BRADLEY, Kay

I am researching George DUNSTADTER born 1867 in Germany,
immigrated to the United States in 1884 or 1885, died 8 December
1942. I believe he may have been born in Hessen, Germany.
George married Petronelle "Nellie" BORRESTON born 20 April 1869
at Kvinholen Loten, Norway, died 4 March 1954. Both died
at Dallas, Texas and I believe they are buried in the Old Calvary
Hill Cemetery. Are there any others out there researching the
DUNSTADTER name?
COSTELLO, Bill
eMail address: User291741@aol.com
I am researching George MANDLER, born in Hesse-Kassel. He
appeared in the 1870 Federal census living in Dekalb county,
Illinois. He probably immigrated to the US as a child prior to
1850. He was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge and his religion
was probably either Catholic or Lutheran, although the name
MANDLER can also be Jewish. He may have been a harness maker. He
had several children, one of whom was Grace MANDLER who married
Thomas ? COSTELLO and resided at 1425 Wisconsin Street, Berwyn,
Illinois in the 1920's. Any information about the family would
be helpful.
COX, Herman BAILES

Germany, died 29 June 1813 in Lincoln county, North Carolina, and
his wife Catherine MOTZ born about 1734 in Hesse-Kassel, Germany,
died 14 March 1813 in Lincoln county, North Carolina. Catherine
was the daughter of Hans George MOTZ. Johannes and Catherine
arrived in Pennsylvania in 1765 on the ship Polly. They had two
sons: William (born about 1762, died 14 August 1822) and George
(born 20 Dec 1763 in Hessel Kassel, Germany, died 16 October 1850
in Catawaba county, North Carolina). George was a captain in the
American Revolution.

I'm doing research on my great-great-grandfather, Adam KNOTH,
born 26 January 1837. He was from the Hesse-Kassel region and
immigrated to the U.S. in 1857. He settled in the Chicago area.
He may have been in Wisconsin first. He was in the Civil War and
after he was wounded, he settled at Chicago and married Mary
SCHULTZ 24 October 1866 at St. Paul's German Lutheran Church in
Chicago. I assume their religion was Lutheran. Their
marriage certificate was burned in the big fire in Chicago in
1870 or 1871. Their children were: Emma born 1868; John (Jack)
born 1873; William John born 1875 (my grandfather); Freid (Fred)
born 1877; Amalia (Molly) born 1881; Carrie born 1884; Mae (Mary
or Marie) born 1886; Louis born 1888; and Adam Jr. born 1897
(died as an infant or young child - was not listed in the 1900
census). Adam KNOTH died 18 March 1911 at Chicago and Mary died
11 April 1915 at Chicago. Both are buried in Mt. Greenwood
Cemetery in Illinois which is for Civil War veterans. I am
trying to learn where Adam KNOTH was born and who his parents and
siblings were.
CORBETT, Terri
eMail address: Tmcorb@aol.com
I am researching Anton LOREY, born 26 January 1840 at Alsfeld,
Hessen, Germany, son of Catharina LOREY (I believe she was single
when she had Anton). Catharina was the daughter of Johannes
LOREY and Catharina LUTZ and was probably born circa 1820-1825.
Anton was baptized on 30 January 1840 by Pastor C. CONHARD,
pfarrer. I believe that he was Lutheran. Anton LOREY emigrated
to the United States in Nov 1866. He married Elisa Jane SCHWENK
and they had eight children, all born in Lehigh county,
Pennsylvania. Their children were: Madina M. born 1870; George
A. born 1872; Franklin W. born 1875; Susan A. born 1879; Henry W.
born 1883; Herbert A. born 1885; Elmer L. born 1888; and Grover
C. born 1892. Anton died as a widower in Pennsylvania in 1921.
I would appreciate hearing from anyone who knows the name of
Catharina LOREY'S husband, as well as any other siblings who may
have been born to them. I would also like to correspond with
anyone researching the LOREY surname or the name of the pastor,
CONHARD.

I am researching Baltzer OSCHMAN (birth and death date unknown)
and Ann Martha GERLACH, born 30 December 1811 at Suess,
Kurhessen, Germany, died 20 November 1887 in Schuylkill county
Pennsylvania. Their children were: 1) Baltheiser (John Baltzer
in America) OSCHMAN, born 1834 in Hesse Cassel according to
citizenship papers, died 11 May 1898 in Schuylkill county
Pennsylvania. Baltheiser married Anna Elizabeth (surname known),
born in 1836 in Saxony, died 26 July 1892 in Schuylkill county
Pennsylvania, 2) Christina OSCHMAN, born 5 December 1836 in
Germany, died 22 March 1925 in Schuylkill county Pemnnsylvania.
3) William OSCHMAN, born about 1840 in Germany. Baltheiser
(1834-1898) and Anne Elizabeth OSCHMAN were the parents of
(all born in Pennsylvania): Andrew, born 1860; Christina, born
1862; Anna Josephine Elizabeth, born 1863; Anna Louise, born
1866; Anna Martha, born 1868; Anna Sabina, born 1871; Baltzer
William, born 1873; and John William, born 1876. Most of these
dates were from records in a Lutheran Church at Tamaqua,
Pennsylvania. I am interested in knowing the town in Germany
where the OSCHMAN family was located, any siblings, and the
GERLACH family.

I am researching Adam Jacob HERMANN born 23 October 1806 near
Marburg, Hessen, Germany. He married Mary (maiden name unknown)
at Marburg (date unknown). Mary was born 26 December 1804 in
Germany. They emigrated in 1868 from Bremen on the ship "Bremen"
to Burlington, Iowa. Adam died 10 October 1880; Mary died 4 June
1875. Their children were: Jacob born 1838; Laura born 1836;
Henry born 1840; John born 1844-1845; and my great great
grandfather, Frederick Jacob Adam, born 26 May 1850. The older
children emigrated before Frederick and his parents. Frederick
was 17 when they left Germany and 18 when they arrived in
America. On the tombstones of Adam, Mary and Frederick, it says
that they were born near Marburg, Germany. The family was
Lutheran. They joined a Lutheran Church (German) when they
arrived in Union Township, Iowa.
KANIUT, Peter

I am searching for information on my grandmother, Anna Marie ?
RUST, born in Hesse Kassel on 10 October 1860. Her father was a
Dr. RUST (first name unknown) who was a professor at the college
in Kassell. Anna had at least one brother (August or Carl) who
founded the Rust Chemical Company, which later merged with I.G.
Farben. She attended the college where she may have met my
grandfather, A.? Max KANIUT, who was from Brinnitz, Silesia.
They were married in Hamburg on 5 September 1888, and immigrated
to the US on 9 September 1888 on the steamer "Wilhelm II". Anna
could speak five languages and A.? Max could speak seven
languages. She wrote a note one time on "Things to see in
Deutschland," and in it are: "Mutters home-Risidens and
Haupt-Stack Kassell-Hessen Nassau." Also, there are names of
relatives: Carolin GOETZE, RUST, LIEBE, LATVESEN, Karl and
Auguste GROSSEL. A few years ago I found many letters from the
following people sent to my grandmother: Charlotte LATVESEN from
Johannesburg in 1901; Auguste GROSSEL from Frankfurt in 1901; and
Herr Lui GROSSEL from Berlin (no date). There are many others
dating from 1889 through 1911. They all seem to be close
relatives. These letters are in the old German script and I have
had no luck translating them. I would really like to share
information with descendants of these relatives.

I am researching the ancestors of my great great grandfather,
Andreas HERBERT, born 28 January 1822 at Oberingelheim,
Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany. He married Elizabeth MUELLER (born
1826) in June 1850 or 1851. I believe they emigrated to the
United States sometime thereafter. They settled at Evansville,
Vanderburgh county, Indiana. Elizabeth died there 19 April 1868
and is buried at Evansville. Andreas died 5 May 1871 and is also
buried there. They had four children, all born in Indiana, with
the possible exception of Frederick. The children were:
Frederick (born 1853, died 1921); Elizabeth (dates unknown);
Philippina (died 1886); and Jacob (born 1866, died 1944). Any
information would be appreciated.
MINK, Kenneth
eMail address: Kenmink@aol.com
I am researching Johann MINK Sr., believed to have been born in
Hessen, Germany about 1690 and immigrated to Wilmington, Delaware
about 1710. The name of his wife is unknown. Johann Sr. and his
wife are believed to have died in the Wilmington, Delaware area
around 1750. They had a son, Johann MINK Jr., born in 1713 at
Wilmington. He is believed to have died in Lee county, Virginia
(near Pennington Gap, possibly at a place called Minktown about
1772). He had a son named John (later to be known as Old Man
MINK).
NOVAK, Billy Gene OESTREICH
eMail addresss: chickade@worldnet.att.net
I am researching my great great grandparents, Henry (Heinrich)
OESTREICH (born 21 December 1800 at Darmstadt, Germany,; died
1883)and Juliana SCHWEIZER (born 1811 at Steifurt, Germany; died
1890). They married and had daughters, Julia and Margaret in
Germany. They emigrated to the United States about 1838,
settling in Waterloo, Monroe county Illinois. They had four more
children: Henry, William, Mary and Catherine.
NUDDS, Gordon
eMail address: cargon@oxford.net
I am searching for the background/ancestry of my GG Grandparents
who emigrated from Germany about 1850 to Ontario, Canada living
in the Toronto area for awhile then moving on to Lambton County,
Ontario about 1857. Jacob ROMPH and wife Caroline BOUCHNER
emigrated in 1850 from Germany. Jacob died 26 May 1901 in
Bosanquet Township, Lambton County, Ontario Canada. Caroline
died 1 November 1907 in Bosanquet also. On the 1881 Canadian
Census for Bosanquet I have the following with notes on it from
the Genealogy Society in Lambton County giving actual dates of
birth on some of the children and on Jacob and Caroline: Jacob
63 (born 14 March 1820, Germany), Caroline 52 (born 24 January
1829 in Nassau, Germany), John 31 (born 1850), George 24 (born
1859), William 24 (born 5 October 1859) - not sure if twins or an
error - Walter 21 (born 23 August 1861), Albert 12 (born 25 March
1868), Arthur (born 10 Sept 1872), and Lizzy 6 (born 1875). I
believe one is missing as the death of Caroline gave the
following summary in her obit: Mrs. Jacob Romph survived by 8
children - George, Mayville, Michigan; John, Stokes Bay, Bruce
County, Ontario; Mrs. A. FLOOD of Toronto; Mrs. W.H. MILLMAN of
Sarnia, Ontario; Scott of West William; and William, Albert and
Arthur all of Bosanquet, Lambton Cty, Ontario. In marriage
application 004985 of my great grandfather John Jacob, it gives
his father and mother's names but not anything about them. In
the obituary write up it gave Caroline's birthpace as Nassau,
Germany. John Jason's birthplace was given as Michigan, U.S.A
but all others were born in Bosanquet, Lambton Cty, Ontario I
believe. If anyone can help me I would greatly appreciate any
information. Thanks.

I'm looking for the parents of Johann Peter APPELMAN, born 1668
at Nieder-Ramstadt, Darmstadt, Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany and Anna
Magdalena DIEKERHOFF, born 1677 at the same place. Johann Peter
and Anna Magdalena were married in the Lutheran church in
Darmstadt in 1700. Their children were: Johann Peter (II), born
2 April 1701; Johann Michael, born 2 April 1702; Elisabeth, born
19 December 1703; Anna Catherina born 4 Deceember 1705; and
Johann Daniel, born 26 July 1708. Johann Peter and Anna
Magdalena APPELMAN immigrated to America, sailing from Germany
to England and then to New Jersey where both are buried at
Somerset, New Jersey. I have church records (written in the old
German script) and all I can recognize are the names and dates
because the priest wrote everything in German.
ROJO, Karla
eMail address: drkrojo@ozinet.aunz.com
I am researching George Peter GROHS and his wife, Elizabetha
SCHAEFER, formerly of Offenbach, Hessen, Germany. George was a
carpenter. They emigrated from Germany on board the ship "Caesar
Goddefroy," arriving in Moreton Bay, Australia on 7 March 1856.
The ship was quarantined due to an outbreak of small pox. Their
daughter, Catherine Henrietta Augusta GROHS was born 17 February
1856 and I assume was one of those stricken by the virus as I
have been unable to find any further trace of her. George Peter
GROHS was naturalized in Australia 7 June 1858. He died in
Balmain, Sydney, Australia on 9 November 1902. His wife,
Elizabetha GROHS, died in Grafton, New South Wales, Australia on
7 April 1906. Their other children (all born in Grafton, New
South Wales, Australia) were: Jacob born 5 June 1857; Sophia born
27 March 1861; Catherine born 20 November 1862; Augusta born 14
December 1865, married Francis THORNLEY 17 January 1894;
Elizabeth; and George Ludwig born 2 June 1872.
When George and Elizabetha settled as pioneers in the Clarence
River Valley at Grafton, they were very involved in the Lutheran
Church, so I have assumed they followed that faith in Germany,
but I have not been able to prove this. Through the IGI at the
LDS Church, I have been looking at a possible connection to the
family of Petrus SCHAEFER and Catharina DAHLBENDER who were
married on 7 January 1823 in the Catholic church at Hackenheim,
Rheinhessen, Hessen, Germany. Their children were Eva born 27
December 1827; Elizabetha born 30 August 1831; Anna Maria born 23
March 1835; Christina born 17 February 1838; and Catharina born
25 September 1842. It was recorded on Elizabetha GROHS' death
certificate that her mother was Anna M, father unknown, which
makes me think this could be the right family and that Elizabetha
was the illegitimate daughter of Anna Maria SCHAEFER. It could
be possible as Anna Maria would be 21 years old when Elizabetha
was born. I have been unable to find any information regarding
George Peter GROHS' family in Germany.

I am trying to find my family's roots in Germany for an upcoming
visit. My great great grandfather, John Jacob VON GREBENSTEIN,
was born 1 April 1837 in West Hessen, Germany. He died in 1904.
He married Elizabeth SCHMIDT, born 21 September 1838 in West
Baden, Germany and died in 1922. They had a son, John Jacob
GREBENSTEIN, born at New York City 9 November 1858 and died 9
February 1959 at Valhalla, New York. He married Margaret HAHN
born 16 July 1859 at New York City and died 22 May 1910 at Mount
Vernon, New York. They had a daughter, Marguerite Tuttle
GREBENSTEIN, who was born 23 September 1898 and died 27 December
1975. She married Orben Cornelius PURDY who was born 28 March
1897 in New York City and died 3 Jan 1966 in Mount Vernon, NY.
Any information would be appreciated.

I am researching John HENKES, born 12 December 1831; Martin
HENKES born 28 March 1805; and Catherine Anna HENKES (nee KUHN)
born 30 October 1806. The name may also be spelled HENCKES.
They gave Hessen-Kassel as their birthplace.
John HENKES immigrated to the U.S. in the spring of 1849 with one
of his elder brothers. He died 4 January 1915. His parents were
Martin and Anna KUHN HENKES. In Germany, the family belonged to
the Reformed Church of Germany and in the U.S. they were
associated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church. The parents
came to the U.S. in 1850 and settled in Browhelm Township, Ohio
and moved to Clayton ccounty Iowa in 1855. Martin died 7 May
1875 and Anna died 17 June 1889. John married Martha Elizabeth
DEITZ (DIETZ?) who was born in Hessen on 24 July 1830. Martha
arrived in the U.S. at age 24 with her 16 year old brother and
traveled from Bremen to New York, arriving 23 May 1854 aboard the
ship "Speculant". I would like to find her birthplace and the
birthplace of the HENKES in Hessen-Kassel.

I am researching Paulus (aka Paul) SCHENK, born in Hesse-
Darmstadt, Germany, died 1814 at Cobbleskill, NY. He married
Betsy FRANTZ (daughter of Sebastian FRANTZ), born 14 September
1758, died 1846 at Cobbleskill, NY (buried in Cobbleskill Rural
Cemetery). They worshiped at the Cobbleskill Lutheran Church.
Their children were: Magdalena, born 3 May 1784; John, born 2
April 1786; Barbara, born 31 January 1787; Sebastian born
1790, married Maria SHAFER 20 February 1814, died 26 November
1876; Elizabeth, born 17 September 1793; Maria born 15 July 1796,
died 8 October 1862; and David, born 22 April 1802, married Cay
SHAFER 1 January 1825, died 20 December 1881. Possible brothers
of Paulus are Johannes and Henrich SCHENCK (on list for Third
Provincial Congress meeting in New York as representatives from
Dutchess county, New York. A family letter states that Paulus
was a soldier and present at the surrender of Burgoyne. However,
I haven't found his name on any regimental lists.

My grandfather, Franz GAULRAPP, was from the Eppenheim area,
which is about 10 miles south of Darmstadt, Hessen, Germany. He
was said to have attended Heidelberg University, School of
Architecture. We do not have any emigration information, but we
do know that in 1903 his first child was born in Boston, MA. We
have no information about any of his family. Franz died in
Boston about 1914. He married Emma REIBEL, whom we believe to
have been born in the New York harbor while waiting for
disembarkation. She was born on 16 February (unknown year) to
Maria Magdalena REIBEL who was from Baden; Emma died in 1934 at
Boston. Maria died in 1931 at Boston. She was what is known as
"High German." We do not know if REIBEL was her maiden name or
married name, nor do we have any information about the father of
her child or children. Maria also had at least two other
daughters, Theresa and Sophie. We do not know if they were born
in Germany or in the US. Sophie married a Mr. FOSTER and had two
sons, Frederick and William. She passed away in the 1950's.
Theresa married a Mr. BROWN and had three or four children, all
born in Boston, and all have since passed away.
The children of Franz and Emma GAULRAPP were Edward, Elizabeth
and J. Margaret. J. Margaret was born 14 October 1912 at Dedham,
Massachusetts. Margaret married William EGERSHEIM at Boston.
All the children are deceased. To the best of my knowledge, all
were Roman Catholic. William GRAUEL / GRAUL was connected to the
family in some way, but we are not sure how. We are not sure of
the correct spelling of his name, or from where he came. All we
do know is that he immigrated to the US and he owned a home in
the Boston area which was taken by eminent domain by the city of
Boston in the 1930's. Tor the best of our knowledge, he was
never married. The other connection to the family is to the
George WATTENDORF family, though we do not have any information
regarding them except that they emigrated and resided in the
Boston area, as well as in Dedham, Massachusetts.
