I am searching for the family of Gertrude Elisabeth BUCH, born 7 Dec 1864 or 1865, christened 25 Dec 1864 or 1865 at Kassel, Simmerhausen, Germany. She was the daughter of Jost Heinrich BUCH and Margarethe Elisabeth SOMMER. She immigrated to Champaign, Champaign county, Illinois in March 1882. She met her husband-to-be, John C. EBERHARDT, born in 1854, on the same ship she came on. (I am also interested in information about John's parents). Gertrude traveled with friends named MYERS. John told her that he would send for her when he got settled. They married in 1885 at Boswell, Indiana. In 1896 they moved to Fowler, Benton county, Indiana. Gertrude died 11 August 1932 and John died 30 October 1897. They are buried in the Fowler Cemetery at Fowler, Indiana. Their children were: William J, of Blue Island, Illinois, married Tillie and they had two children; Delbert R. of Kentland, Indiana; George W., of Ojibwa, Wisconsin; Pearl Freda, of Fowler, Idiana, married Mr. MARION; Mildred of Monticello, married Dorrance DOBBINS, died in 1998 or 1999, had one child; and John C. EBERHARDT Jr. of Fowler, Indiana, died 1953 in the Veterans Hospital at Indianapolis, Indiana, married Mary ?. Gertrude was active in the Fowler Christian Church at Fowler, Indiana, and the American Legion Auxiliary, Eight and Forty and Rebecca and Pocahontas lodges.

AUSTERMÜHLE (AUSTERMUEHLE / AUSTERMUHLE), Hans
eMail address: auster@racsa.co.cr

(Protestant)

I am researching David AUSTERMUHLE (son of Johann Philipp AUSTERMUHLE and Christina Elisabeth VON DISSEN) born 27 October 1792 at Liebenau, Hessen, Germany, migrated to the Netherlands where he married Johanna Leonora HOFF on 5 December 1823. Johanna was born 5 August 1799 at Den Haag (the Hague), Zuid Holland, Netherlands. I do not have death information on either of them. Their children were: Christina Martina Elisabeth born 18 October 1824 in Rotterdam, Zuid Holland; and Martiena Johanna Jacoba born 18 Augusst 1826 in Rotterdam.

David was married a second time on 29 June 1831 at Den Haag to Catharina Geraldina VARENKAMP, born 9 March 1809. Their children were: Johanna Maria born 20 May 1832 at Schiedam, Zuid Holland; Johannes Philippus born 3 December 1833 at Den Haag; Willem Hendrik born 10 July 1836 at Den Haag; Johanna Maria born 3 May 1838 at Den Haag; Elisabeth Geradina born 28 July 1840 at Den Haag; and Johannes Hendrik born 23 November 1845 at Rotterdam, Zuid Holland. My Dutch ancestors were Protestant. I wonder whether David was part of the Napoleonic troops that occupied Holland between 1795 and 1815 or the allied troops that defeated Napoleon. I am especially interested in possible emigration records, source of military data, etc.

The only information I have about the individuals I'm looking for comes from anecdotal family history, and I'm not sure how much of it is accurate. Here is what I have: John (Johannes?) DIPPEL, born 1817 in Hesse, Germany, died 1899 at Granville, Putnam county, Illinois. He married Elizabeth BRIDENSTEIN in 1843. Elizabeth was born 17 August 1818 in Hesse, Germany, died 9 November 1892 at Granville, Putnam county, Illinois. They immigrated to the US with their son, August DIPPEL, in 1856. August was born 28 August 1856 in Hesse, Germany, and died 4 August 1931 in Illinois. August married Elizabeth FRIESLEBEN (the name appears in some records as FREASLAVEN) on 6 March 1888. Elizabeth was born 24 October 1862 in Hesse, Germany, died 30 July 1949 in Illinois. In America the descendants of John (or Johannes) DIPPEL and his family attended Lutheran churches. I assume that the family in Germany was also Lutheran.

(Jewish)

I am researching Jacob MEYER, born in 1843 in Nufringen, Herrenberg?, Germany. When he arrived in New York in 1866 on board the ship "New York," he said that he was from Hessen, Germany. Jacob is believed to have died at Louisville, Kentucky. He married Barbara ? at Seneca, Ohio on 13 December 1871 and they lived at Louisville, KY. Their children were Max, Mina, Fy and Lev. Their religion was Jewish.

GOLIAN, Georgia
eMail address: ggolian@webtv.net

I am researching Jacob WILHELM born 1780 in Germany, died 16 Dec 1835. He married Elizabeth C. ?, born 1776, died 1880. Their son (my great-grandfather), Phillip Peter WILHELM, was born 11 November 1827 at Auelterbach, Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany. He immigrated to America in 1853 and located at Portsmouth, Ohio. He enlisted in the Union Army during the civil War, serving four years as a member of Co. E, 37th Regiment of Ohio Volunteers. He married Anna Jane JOHNSON. They had a number of children, one of whom was Margaretha Elenor WILHELM. Margaretha married James SNELL. They had a daughter named Pansy May SNELL. Phillip died 24 April 1909 at Hannibal, Missouri. Anna Jane died 7 May 1932 at age 75.

I am researching my great-grandparents, Sigmund SOMMERS, born 18 December 1831 at Creinfeld, Grosherdsrglsng, Hessen and his wife, Caroline BIRK, born 31 December 1835 at Sterbfritz, Kurhessen. Sigmund and Caroline married 2 September 1856 in the Lodge Street Synagogue at Cincinnati, Ohio. I believe the parents of Caroline BIRK were David BIRK, a tradesman born 10 April 1788, died 25 March 1844 at Sterbfritz, and Rachel STRAUSS. I believe that the father of Sigmund SOMMERS was Benjamin SOMMERS, born 21 October 1802 at Creinfeld, Hessen. Benjamin is buried at Cincinnati, Ohio. Sigmund died 20 December 1909 and Caroline died 22 December 1925; both are buried at Cincinnati, Ohio. The children of Sigmund and Caroline were: Mary, Julia, Fanny, Stella, David, Hattie, Charles and Samuel, all of whom, I believe, were born at Cincinnati. The family was Jewish. I would especially like information on the parents of Sigmund and Caroline and their siblings.

HEIER, Richard
eMail address: Rfheier@aol.com

I'm looking for the birth village of Peter MICHEL, born 29 January 1866 somewhere at Kurhessen, Germany, died 14 October 1920 in Allentown, Pennsylvania. He immigrated with his wife, Pauline VOLZ, to America prior to 1910. Pauline was born 15 November 1866 in Liebenzell, Wuerttemberg, Germany. She died 17 December 1943 in Allentown, Pennsylvania. Peter's parents are said to have owned a shoe factory. Their children were: Helen born 1894, Harry born 1896, Esther born 1899 and Edward born 1906. It is not known in what country Peter and Pauline were married. However, based on a photo of Pauline, which I have, I would guess that she married and immigrated in 1894.

PABST, Kathy
eMail address: KathyPabst@aol.com

I am researching Melchior PABST, born at Hintersteinau, Hesse Kassel, Germany on 31 August 1835. He had brothers named John and Casper. They were the sons of Henry PABST. I believe that the family arrived in America around 1859 or 1860. Melchior lived outside of Hecker, Illinois. He died 13 August 1919 and is buried outside Hecker at the Tomorrow Cemetery. The two closest cities to Hecker are Red Bud and New Athens. Melchior had two wives who both preceded him in death. The first wife was Dora WYANGARDNER. The children of Melchior and Dora were Elizabeth, Emelia, Edward, and William. Melchior's second wife was Elizabeth RINGEISER and their children were: Mary, Bertha, and Jacob. Both wives must be buried somewhere close to Melchior, but the exact location is unknown.

PARKER, Barbara

(Episcopal ?)

I am researching Franz Joseph TEISSLER, born 1854 (accrdong to his death certificate in Austria, but I'm not sure), immigrated to America about 1874, and died 2 May 1911 at Chicago, Illinois. He married Elizabeth BOEHM born circa 1852 (believed to have been born in Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany). She died 12 October 1908 in Chicago, Illinois. The family may have been Episcopalian as my grandmother was a member of the Episcopal church. The children of Franz and Elizabeth were: John Anton TEISSLER, died 1931 at the age of 72 years, 4 months, 25 days; Alma TEISSLER, married Louis STEICHMAN; Frank TEISSLER, married a woman named Maude, died in a US Veteran's Administration Hospital at Chicago; Henry TEISSLER, died young; and Charles Louis TEISSLER, born 8 May 1880, died 5 July 1964. Charles married Charlotte BAINE on 19 November 1907 at the Church of the Ascension in Chicago. Charlotte was born 29 November 1875 at Guelph, Ontario, Canada. She died 15 January 1952. Both Charles and Charlotte are buried in Rosehill Cemetery at Chicago.

PERRY, Marlis
eMail address: mardon.perry7@verizon.net

I am searching for information on my great-great-grandparents who immigrated to America before 1848. Peter HOFMEISTER was born in Hesse-Darmstadt about 1817. He settled in Indiana and was listed in the 1860 census stating his father and mother both were born in Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany. Peter's wife was Christina BOLLY born circa 1820 in Wurtenburg, Germany. She also stated in the 1860 census that her parents were born in Wurtenburg. I believe that Peter and Christina were married before immigrating to America. They are both buried at Charlestown, Indiana.
They must have immigrated before 1848, because all of their children were born in Indiana. Their children were: 1) John, born 1848, married Eva OEDER in Indiana on 20 March 1873. They were Roman Catholic and had one child, William C. John and Eva ran a grocery store and, at one point, John owned a brickyard. They moved to Louisville, Jefferson county Kentucky. 2) Louisa, born 1853, married Jake GRAF. 3) Henry, born 1857, married Anna GRIMM. 4) Lena born 1858, married Willis GRAVES, and, according to the 1880 U.S. Federal census, they were living at Clark county, Indiana. 5) Carrie, married Henry HEFFENDEFER. 6)0
Edward, died as a child. 7) Lizzie (Elizabeth) born 1861, married Arthur DAWES at Henderson, Indiana. I have not been able to find out when Peter and Christina died. According to some new information, Peter had brothers named Conrad and William (also immigrated to America).

PATMORE, Hilary
eMail address: patmore@henderson.net

(Baptist ?)

I am looking for anything on a Peter WHITTINGHILL, possibly from Stesse, (Kates note: this appears to be HESSE) Germany. He was probably born in 1752, as he was said to have immigrated to America in 1770 at age 18. He married Catherine GABHART in 1774 in Virginia. He fought in the American Revolution, and afterwards moved to Kentucky and on to Warrick county Indiana, where he died in 1844. I am not sure of his religion, possibly Baptist. He had eight children, the oldest was John. Any information would be helpful. Thank you.

MERRICK, Laurel
eMail address: merricklaurel@hotmail.com

I am researching my ancestors from Wollmar, Hessen, Germany. Johannes MULLER (also written as MOLLER and MOELLER) married Phillipine HENKEL. They had a child named Carl MULLER, born 7 June 1838 at Wollmar, christened 7 September 1838 in the Lutheran Church at Wollmar. The godfather was Carl BICHERMANN and the godmother was Gertrude BECKER, half-sister of Johannes MULLER. Carl MULLER went to Australia in 1863 on the ship "Beausite", arriving at Moreton Bay, Queensland, Australia on 9 May 1863. He is supposed to have left siblings in Germany.

SHORT, Leslie
eMail address: Aandlshort@snip.net

(Evangelisch)

I am researching Friedrich NIESSNER; his brother, Johann NIESSNER; and his cousin, Heinrich Jacob SCHMIDT. They were all born at Gelnhausen, Hessen, Germany. I am especially interested in finding information about their immigration to America (year and port of arrival). Each man would have been approximately 16 to 20 years old.

Friedrich NIESSNER was born 22 April 1859, the son of Philip NIESSNER and Caroline SCHMIDT. He was christened in the Marienkirche (Evangelisch) at Gelnhausen. Friedrich married Clara BOLZ at Filley, Nebraska in 1885. Clara was born in Bromberg (Bydgoszcz) 7 July 1863. Their children, Elizabeth Antonia and Frederick, were born in Nebraska. Friedrich took out a homestead patent in Kit Carson county, Colorado about 1888. In 1889 Friedrich NIESSNER was at Johnstown, PA at the time of the flood, where he and his wife lost all their possessions. His cousin, Heinrich Jacob SCHMIDT, was also a resident of Johnstown at that time, having recently arrived from Norfolk, Virginia where he owned a dairy farm.

Friederich NIESSNER was a homesteader at Benito, Manitoba, Canada. Hearsay has it that he did not want to declare Canadian citizenship at the time of World War I and forsook his claim. In 1891, Friedrich NIESSNER was living in the Northern Liberties section of Philadelphia on Lawrence Street where his sons, Herman Ferdinand NIESSNER and John Paul NIESSNER, were born. Friedrich worked for Baldwin Locomotive. He and his brother, Johann, were machinists. Around 1900, Friedrich NIESSNER moved to Camden, NJ, where his children, William and Caroline, were born. Friedrich and Clara attended Christus Evangelical Lutheran Church at 27th Street and Hayes Avenue. Friedrich died 27 Mar 1943; Clara died 16 Dec 1950, both in Camden, NJ. They are buried in Lakeview Cemetery at Riverside, New Jersey.

Johann (John) NIESSNER, Friedrich's brother, also lived and worked at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Camden, New Jersey; he died in Camden, New Jersey. Heinrich (Henry) J. SCHMIDT, cousin of Friedrich and John, was born at Gelnhausen on 5 Feb 1864, "one of 9 sons of John J. and Christine (AURING) SCHMIDT. Henry died 30 March 1942 at Johnstown, Cambria county, Pennsylvania. His tombstone in Grandview Cemetery, Johnstown, Pennylvania gives his place of birth: "Born Gelnhausen bei Frankfurt A/M Germany." His wife was Eliza VONALT (born 1861, died 1926).

WILDER, Erika
eMail address: teabn@prodigy.net

(Lutheran)

I am researching Emil WAPPLER. I believe that he was born in Hessen, Germany in the mid-1800's. He married Julianna MORACH. They had a son, Adolf WAPPLER, born at Kalish, Poland. They also had another son, Frederich, born in 1884. The family did not immigrate to the United States. They were Lutheran.

WOOTON, Mona
Docscowboy@aol.com

(Roman Catholic)

I am researching Johann ZUNCK or ZANK. He immigrated to America around 1847 or 1848. He married Katharine MUELLER or MILLER (as it was spelled on his will). He died in 1871 at St. Louis, Missouri. On the census, he is listed as being from Darmstadt, Hessen and his name is listed as ZANCK and ZANKE. My father, who is now deceased, said it used to be ZUNCK. Johann died in 1871 at St. Louis, Missouri and is buried in St. Peter and Paul Cemetery. I don't know when his wife died. They were Catholic. They had a total of 10 children. I think that the first two, Elizabeth and Mary, were born in Germany, and Peter was the first child born in America (at St. Louis, about 1849).
