I am searching for the family of Gertrude Elisabeth BUCH, born 7
Dec 1864 or 1865, christened 25 Dec 1864 or 1865 at Kassel,
Simmerhausen, Germany. She was the daughter of Jost Heinrich
BUCH and Margarethe Elisabeth SOMMER. She immigrated to
Champaign, Champaign county, Illinois in March 1882. She met her
husband-to-be, John C. EBERHARDT, born in 1854, on the same ship
she came on. (I am also interested in information about John's
parents). Gertrude traveled with friends named MYERS. John told
her that he would send for her when he got settled. They married
in 1885 at Boswell, Indiana. In 1896 they moved to Fowler,
Benton county, Indiana. Gertrude died 11 August 1932 and John
died 30 October 1897. They are buried in the Fowler Cemetery at
Fowler, Indiana. Their children were: William J, of Blue Island,
Illinois, married Tillie and they had two children; Delbert R. of
Kentland, Indiana; George W., of Ojibwa, Wisconsin; Pearl Freda,
of Fowler, Idiana, married Mr. MARION; Mildred of Monticello,
married Dorrance DOBBINS, died in 1998 or 1999, had one child;
and John C. EBERHARDT Jr. of Fowler, Indiana, died 1953 in the
Veterans Hospital at Indianapolis, Indiana, married Mary ?.
Gertrude was active in the Fowler Christian Church at Fowler,
Indiana, and the American Legion Auxiliary, Eight and Forty and
Rebecca and Pocahontas lodges.
I am also looking for information on the SCHMITT family of
Obertiefenbach, Hessen, Germany. Philip and Anna-Katherine
SCHMITT were probably born in the mid-1700's. They had a son
named John who married Ann STAMM. John and Ann had a son named
Jacob (1802-1870) who married Anna Katherine SCHACT. Jacob and
Anna had eight sons: John (1832-1899); Jacob (1834-1884), married
Ann Marie and had children William, Ann, John and Joseph); George
(1836-1893), married Ann Marie WAGNER (1842-1902) and had
children Jacob (1870-1941), George (1871-1940), Joseph (1874),
Karl, Ferdinand (1878), married Katherine DIEFENBACH(1887), John,
Katherine, and Valentine; Anton (1839-1912); Jacob (1842-1862);
William Schmitt (1844), married Mary BOYERSMITH, had children
Albert R. (born 1887 at Petrosky, Michigan, died 1954 at Grand
Rapids, Michigan). Albert married Rose Ann STEINBACH
(1887-1951); Philip (1847) and Aequidius (1850). The family was
Catholic and lived on property that was formerly owned by the
church and came to be called the "Schmitt House".

I am researching Gustav BAMBERGER born 31 July 1857. In a family
book it says that he was born in Hessen-Kassel and then it says
Dilshousen Marburg. He immigrated to the U.S. in 1879. He died
10 June 1916 at Chicago, Illinois. He married Louise ZEIGER in
Illinois 29 October 1882. Louise was born 5 October 1864 in
Germany and came to the U.S. at the age of 4. The family's
religion was Lutheran. Gustav and Louise had three children:
William, August Fredrick (my grandfather, born 1887), and Henry,
born 1890. I am trying to find Gustav's parent's names. His
mother's name may have been SMITH or SCHIMT. I don't know if it
is a possibility, but I found a Friedrich BAMBERGER, christened
16 August 1857, Lutheran, at Anghausen, Rhineland Prussia. This
caught my eye because of the date and because my grandfather's
middle name was Fredrick and he named one of his sons
Frederick.
BECKER, Peter
eMail address: unclepete@clarkston.com
I'm researching Conrad BECKER, shown in some family papers to
have been born at Leeds, England on 15 May 1840. He was the son
of Henry BECKER and Elizabeth HAUPT. Conrad married Elizabeth
METZ at Muenster (near Hesse-Darmstadt) and emigrated to San
Francisco, USA in 1862. The rest of Conrad's family seems to
have been born in the Hesse-Darmstadt area. Conrad died 14 March
1919 at Berkeley, Alameda county, California. Elizabeth was born
8 January 1843 at Kleeburg, Usingen, Nassau, Germany. She died
29 September 1936 at San Francisco, California. The children of
Conrad and Elizabeth BECKER were: Christopher, born in 1863 at
San Francisco; John, born at San Francisco; Peter, born in
Germany; Christina; Elsie; Conrad; Otto, born at San Francisco;
and Elizabeth, born at San Francisco. The entire family moved
back to Hesse in 1883 so that Christopher could enter the Army,
where he served three years with the Hessian-Jaegers and is shown
as Lutheran on his military papers. In the mid-1880's, the
family moved back to San Francisco and they were naturalized as
USA citizens in 1886.

I am researching George KESLER born about 1818, probably in
Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany, and his wife, Elizabeth, born 1820 in
Germany. In 1850, George and Elizabeth KESLER immigrated to
London, England. Their children were: Elizabeth born 19 March
1854; Mary born in 1858; Katherine born 14 February 1864, and a
son. George KESLER emigrated to Lewis county, New York about
1866 and his wife and daughters followed shortly. George was a
bootmaker. He died at Croghan, New York 3 May 1888. Elizabeth
KESLER died 3 November 1894 and Katherine KESLER died 4 November
1881. They are all buried in Sunnyside Cemetery at Croghan, New
York. The family's religion was Lutheran. Konrad KESLER, brother
to George) was born in 1816 and died at Lott, Germany in 1888.
Konrad's wife died in 1900 in Germany. They had two sons and one
daughter. Another brother, Justus KESLER, immigrated to Lewis,
New York, where he married Julia ____. Their son, Frederick,
died 9 Mar 1865 at age 10 years, 6 months, 23 days, and a son,
Henry 6, died 8 September. Another brother, _____ KESLER, died
at Norddeich, Germany 29 May 1897, and his wife died 22 May 1900.
They had three daughters: Elizabeth, Ann, and Katherine, none of
whom married. A sister of George's married a WISNER and
emigrated to the U.S. Their childrens names are unknown.
Heinrick KESLER, of Leipzig, Germany, was putting together a
family history in 1902 that went back to 1700.
DAVISON, Gerald
eMail address: gerry@marlab.dk
I am researching my wife's family which goes back to Johann
Ludwig PLITH / PLITT, born 1735 at Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany. He
married 1) Ellen Marie FRANDSDATTER, born 1731 in Denmark; he
married 2) Karen Olesdatter RYTTER, born 1754 in Denmark. Both
marriages were in Lutheran churches at Kolding. Johann Ludwig
died 23 Feb 1817 at Kolding, Denmark. Johann went to Denmark in
1762 to be a soldier with the first Danish Husar Regiment which
was founded in 1762 and disbanded in 1767. The regiment had four
companies, one of which resided at Kolding. The children of
Johann Ludwig and Ellen Marie were (all born at Kolding): Johan
Wilhelm Ludwig, born 1761; Marie Juliana, born 1768; and
Christian Wilhelm Ludwig, born 1775. The children of Johann
Ludwig and Karen were (all born at Kolding): twins, Johan Emanuel
and Jeppe Ole, born 1785; and Ellen Kathrine, born 1788. His
first wife died at Kolding in 1781 and his second wife died at
Kolding in 1821.
DIETRICH, Robert
eMail address: betrad@dslextreme.com
(Protestant)
I am searching for information on my great-grandfather, Philip
DIETRICH, who married Lysbeth HEILMAN. Their children were:
Frederica; Jake (may be Jacob); John; and my grandfather,
Frederick, born 15 October 1859 at Gunterblum, Hesse-Darmstadt,
Germany. Frederick emigrated to the United States in 1878.
Frederica, Jake, and John also emigrated to the United States.
All the children settled in upstate New York. All were
Protestant. This is the only information I know about the
family.
EURICH, Vicki
eMail address: eurichv@yahoo.com
(German Evangelical)
Valentine EURICH and his wife, Maria RUPPEL, are believed to have
been born and married at Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany. Valentine's
obituary states that they married in 1849. Maria was the
daughter of John and Gertrude RUPPEL. Valentine died in 1940 in
Tarentum, Pennsylvania; Maria died in 1891, probably at Tarentum,
Pennsylvania. Valentine and Maria, with their small daughter,
Elizabeth, immigrated to New York from Germany, via London, on 12
August 1850 on the ship "Devonshire". The three EURICH family
members reportedly spent some time at Benet (sp ?), Pennsylvania
before relocating and settling permanently at Tarentum, Alleghany
county, Pennsylvania. Further children born to Valentine and
Maria were: John, born 28 August 1850; Conrad, born 6 February
1853; Mary, born 6 October 1854; Caroline and Henry, born 2
October 1856; Hite, born 25 October 1858; and Anna, born 13
September 1861. Valentine's obituary (from the Tarentum
Telegraph) states that "In 1851 he was converted and joined
the German Evangelical Church on East Ninth Avenue." Elizabeth's
birth date has been passed down to me as 1845 which might mean
Valentine wasn't her biological father. She was born in Germany
and the next seven children were born in the U.S.
HAYWOOD, Carol
eMail address: chaywood@sonic.net
(Jewish ?, German Methodist)
I am researching Philip Konrad BUECHER, son of Konrad BUECHER
born 26 May 1828 at Idstein, Rheingau-Taunus, Hessen, Germany.
Philip immigrated in 1864 to Vanderburgh county, Indiana. He
first married Dorothea MEURER or MUIR; he second married
Elisabetha EGENOLF; and he third married Maria Elisabeth BRUCKER
AUERT. Philip died in 1920 at Evansville, Vanderburgh county,
Indiana. Philip's religion is in doubt, but it could be Jewish.
In the United States, he and his third wife had children baptized
in the German Methodist Church. Geographical confusion arises
because Philip seems to have lived both at Idstein and also at
Balduinstein, which is not far away but in another county and
state (Rheinland-Pfalz). Philip and Maria Elisabeth (BRUCKER)
AUERT had the following children: Philip Edward BUECHER, born
1876, died 1938; and Maria Lydia BUECHER, born 1872, died 1943.
I want to learn the name of Philip's mother and her birthplace
and his father's birthplace and religion. I also want to learn
the names of the parents of his first two wives and their
birthplaces.
HECKMAN, James
eMail address: ja-elheckman@voyager.net
I am researching Francis M. HECKMAN / HECKMANN, born 25 November
1843, possibly at Dieburg, Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany. His parents
may have moved from Alsace Lorraine when Francis was two years
old. His first name is also spelled Frances. Francis emigrated
to Canada with his parents, Michael and Maria HECKMANN, circa
1844 or 1845. Francis married Catharine ECKENSWILLER /
ACKERSVILLER on 21 October 1867. He is listed in the 1900 U.S.
Federal census as living at Sebawaing, Huron county, Michigan.
On 14 July 1909, Catharine died and she was buried in Silver Lawn
Cemetery at Sebawaing, Michigan. On 4 January 1912 in Windsor,
Ontario, Canada, Francis married Barbara ECKENSWILLER /
ACKERSVILLER, the sister of his first wife, Catharine. She was
born circa 1846 and died 4 December 1923. Francis died 20 August
1923 and is buried at Stratford, Ontario, Canada in the Avondale
Cemetery with his second wife, Barbara. Francis' children were
(uncertain about some of these dates): Joseph, born 18 February
1867 ?; John, born 30 May 1869, died 28 September 1930; Paulina
(Collina ?), born 23 February 1870, died 1954; Jacob, born 5 July
1871 ?; Anthony, born 23 January 1873 ?; George, born 30 June
1867 ?; Rosa and twin (twin died at birth), born 23 February
1879; died 19 Dec 1946; Mary and twin (twin died at birth), born
26 April 1880, died 2 February 1949; Barbara, born 16 May 1884 ?;
Elizabeth, born 25 Apr 1886, died 7 February 1961; Thersia, born
5 October 1888, died 22 February 1933; Henry, born 5 February
1890, died 1965; and Agnes, born 24 January 1893, died 18
December 1914.
JANICKI, Nancy KURTZ
eMail address: Kurtznj@aol.com
I am looking for information on Adam and Martha KURZ. Martha's
maiden name may have been OTTO. They immigrated, sailing for the
U.S. aboard the ship "Gustav", with date of arrival 20 Aug 1856
and the final destination listed as Pennsylvania. Their last
residence is listed as Hessen. Their children were Adam,
Henrich, and Wilhelm. I have a citizenship paper from Harrisburg,
Dauphin county, Pennsylvania for Adam KURTZ (no longer KURZ)
dated 25 September 1871. I don't know if this is the father or
the son. I have a list of KURTZ's: Otto born 1868; Edwin born
1870; Wilhelm born 1872 (my grandfather); John Oscar born 1874;
Grivin or Irvin (my father's name was Girvin Loss KURTZ) born
1876; Martha born 1879. All are listed as being from Harrisburg,
Pennsylvania. Andrew Roy KURTZ born 1884 was listed at LaMars,
Iowa. These papers were given to me by an aunt after my father
died. The only information on this family comes from these
papers. I don't know how the family of brothers and sisters
above, including my grandfather, were related to Adam. My
grandfather, Wilhelm or William Harrison (W. H. KURTZ, 47 years
old) is listed in the 1920 census with his wife, Lillian (Lilla
A, 44 years old), Priest, sons Girvin (my father), Ralph, and
William. I have no living relatives that I know of and have not
been able to find out how Adam was related to my grandfather.
Adam KURTZ was in the 1st Husaren Regiment 4th Escadron around
1820-1832. I have a paper in Old German which no one has been
able to translate. It looks like a marriage announcement, while
Adam was in the service, of his marriage to Martha Elizabeth OTTO
1820. I also have a document that might be his discharge paper.
I think Adam was an officer in the Prussian army.
LAPP, Patrick
eMail address: patrick.lapp@laposte.net

was Francois LAPP, born 9 February 1817 at Bergzabern, Germany,
died 8 April 1864 at Wissenbourg, France. There were 2 other
daughters and 3 other sons. I am interested in information on
his parents, siblings, and descendants.

were: Arthur William, born 3 June 1873 in Santa Fe, New Mexico;
Rudolph Henry, born 1 Septemnber 1876; Bertha, born February
1877; and Sophia, born May 1883. Family legend has it that Jacob
ESSELBACH was Roman Catholic. Julia WOLLENWEBER emigrated from
Bremen, Germany on the ship "Weser" and arrived at New York on 11
April 1871 with two sisters, Sophie WOLLENWEBER and Friedrike
WOLLENWEBER. There is a record in the book, Germans to America,
Vol. 20 of a Jacob ESSELBACH who emigrated from Germany on the
ship "Atlanta" and arrived at New York from LeHavre and London on
27 September 1868. I would like to find information about
Jacob's parents and his siblings and definite birth dates.

Caroline, born 10 February 1849; Christina Johanna, born 19
February 1850, died 1940 in Freeborn county, Minnesota; and Maria
Wilhelmina, born 5 March 1852, died 1946 in U.S. I have
information on the families after they immigrated to the U.S.,
but very little about them in Germany. Friedrich's
gr-grandfather is named as Jacob Michael JOST (1629-1717) and his
wife as Anna Christina MICHARLIN (1640-1717). I do know the JOST
/ YOST family, the BUNSE family, and the BLUME family were all
from around the same area in Germany. In addition to the towns
(Helsen and Koden) mentioned, the towns of Helmighausen,
Westheim, Koder Hammer, Pickershammer, Westheim Mill, Billinghaus

I am searching for immigration records and other supporting data
for Mikel WIKEL, John WIKEL and Margaret HAXEN. Mikel WIKEL was
born about 1796 at Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany. John WIKEL was
born about 1830 at Hessen-Darmstadt and may have emigrated with
Mikel. A possible port of entry would be in Louisiana. John
married Margaret HAXEN on 31 August 1848 in Bainbridge Township,
Dubois county, Indiana. Margaret was born about 1830 in Bayern,
(Bavaria) Germany. They lived at Bainbridge township Indiana
until 1876. In 1878, they moved to Carmi, Illinois. They then
moved to Owensboro, Kentucky. John and Margaret had a son named
Mikel who changed the family name to WEIKEL (this information
obtained from relative - since deceased - in July 1984. He also
changed his first name to Michael then to Mike. Mikel (1796) was
living in Dearborn county, Indiana in 1850 (listed as Michael
WIKEL in the 1850 U.S. Federal census, wife unknown). The family
was Roman Catholic. The family settled for quite awhile in
Daviess Co., Kentucky where some relatives still reside today.
The name was misspelled as WOIKEL in the 1900 census. The 1910
census spelling of WEIKEL is the one retained today. The sons of
Mikel (1830) were Matthew, Robert S. and Leo.

I am searching for my gg-grandmother, Anna GAUTER. We believe
she immigrated to New York via Hamburg in 1868, registering under
