I am seeking information on Johann BOEHLER, born January 1835 at
Wonsheim, Rheinhessen, Hessen, Germany. He immigrated to the
United States in 1852. He homesteaded in Wisconsin in 1874. His
relgion was Catholic. Johann was the son of Heinrich BOHLER and
Anna Maria JUNG, both of Germany. He had a brother, Heinrich
BOHLER, who settled at Milwaukee, Wisconsin and fought in the U.
S. Civil War. He married Jenny HEISE. Johann BOEHLER married
Theresia RANECKER in Wisconsin in 1866. He took up residence
with a Native American woman about the turn of the century. His
children, all born in Wisconsin, were: Frank, born May 1876
(later changed his surname to BAILER); Maria, born 1870;
Francisca; Theresa; and Katerina.
BECKER, Peter
eMail address: unclepete@clarkston.com
(Lutheran)
I'm researching Conrad BECKER, shown in some family papers to
have been born at Leeds, England on 15 May 1840. He was the son
of Henry BECKER and Elizabeth HAUPT. Conrad married Elizabeth
METZ in Muenster (near Hesse-Darmstadt) and they immigrated to
San Francisco in 1862. The rest of Conrad's family seems to have
been born in the Hesse-Darmstadt area. Conrad died 14 March 1919
at Berkeley, Alameda county, California. Elizabeth was born 8
January 1843 at Kleeburg, Usingen, Nassau, Germany. She died 29
September 1936 at San Francisco, California. The children of
Conrad and Elizabeth BECKER were: Christopher BECKER, born in
1863 in San Francisco; John BECKER, born in San Francisco; Peter
BECKER, born in Germany; Christina BECKER; Elsie BECKER; Conrad
BECKER; Otto BECKER, born at San Francisco; and Elizabeth BECKER,
born in San Francisco. The whole family moved back to Hesse in
1883 so that Christopher could enter the Army where he served
three years with the Hessian-Jaegers and is shown as Lutheran on
his military papers. In the mid-1880's, the family moved back to
San Francisco and they were naturalized in 1886.
CRONAU, Jeannine

I am looking for ancestors of my great-grandfather, Johann
Frederich ACHILLES (also went by Frederich). According to his
obituary, he was born at Keofort, Hessen, Germany on 24 June
1828. I've never been able to find Keofort and think that it was
spelled incorrectly when he immigrated came to the U.S. in 1850.
He came to the U.S. as a young man and resided for several years
in Illinois. He married Sophia Wilhelmine Eleanore SCHROEDER.
Sophia ws born 8 February 1834 in Germany. They had 12 children,
the first three born in Illinois and the rest born in Minnesota.
Frederich died 28 January 1913 at Wheeling, Minnesota. Sophia
died 10 March 1909 at Wheeling, Minnesota.
DAVISON, Gerald
eMail address: gerry@marlab.dk
(Lutheran)
I am researching my wife's family which goes back to Johann
Ludwig PLITH / PLITT, born 1735 in Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany. He
married 1) Ellen Marie FRANDSDATTER, born 1731 in Denmark; aaand
later on he married 2) Karen Olesdatter RYTTER, born 1754 in
Denmark. Both marriages were in Lutheran churches in
Kolding. Johann Ludwig died 23 February 1817 at Kolding,
Denmark. Johann went to Denmark in 1762 to be a soldier with the
first Danish Husar Regiment which was founded in 1762 and
disbanded in 1767. The regiment had four companies, one of which
resided in Kolding. The children of Johann Ludwig and Ellen
Marie were (all born in Kolding): Johan Wilhelm Ludwig, born
1761; Marie Juliana, born 1768; and Christian Wilhelm Ludwig,
born 1775. The children of Johann Ludwig and Karen were (all
born in Kolding): twins, Johan Emanuel and Jeppe Ole, born 1785;
and Ellen Kathrine, born 1788. His first wife died at Kolding in
1781 and his second wife died at Kolding in 1821.
DeFILIPPO (De FILIPPO), Vikki
eMail Address: Vikkster@aol.com
I am researching William Andrew MARTIN, born 11 September 1829 at
Altstadt, Hesse-Nassau, Germany, died 10 March 1910 at Searsboro,
Iowa. He married Marie Elise NAUROTH (date and location
unknown). Marie was born 4 April 1840 (location unknown) and she
died 22 September 1887 at Searsboro, Iowa. Their children were:
John Peter born 30 December 1863; Ferdinand born circa 1867;
Francis born circa 1871; and Louis born circa 1876 at Searsboro,
Iowa. I believe this family immigrated to the U.S. around 1871.
I have yet to find the ship and the exact date. It is said that
the first three boys were born on the Hohensainer Estate (has
anyone heard of Hohensainer?). I believe that William's parents
were Peter MARTIN and Clara BEANDER. Also, it is said that this
family, upon arrival, went directly to Iowa to stay with Peter
SCHMIDT. Peter is somehow related to William MARTIN and may have
also been born at Altstadt. Peter was born in 1826 and
immigrated to New York in 1852. He spent time in Pennsylvania
and then went to Poweshiek county Iowa where he married and
raised his family. Altstadt is now a part of the city of
Hachenburg, Rheinland-Pfalz. I noticed on a map that southwest
of this city there is a town called Nauroth. I would like to
find more information on William's parents, the Hohensainer
Estate, the exact dates of birth for William's sons, information
on William's wife, whether the town with the same name means
anything, and William's relationship to Peter SCHMIDT.
DIETRICH, Robert
eMail address: betrad@dslextreme.com
(Protestant)
I am searching for information on my great-grandfather, Philip
DIETRICH, who married Lysbeth HEILMAN. Their children were:
Frederica DIETRICH; Jake (may be Jacob) DIETRICH; John DIETRICH;
and my grandfather, Frederick DIETRICH, born 15 October 1859 at
Gunterblum, Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany. Frederick immigrated to
the United States in 1878. Frederica, Jake, and John also
immigrated to the United States. All the children settled in
upstate New York. All were Protestant. This is the only
information I know about the family.
EURICH, Vicki
eMail address: eurichv@yahoo.com
Valentine EURICH and his wife, Maria RUPPEL, are believed to have
been born and married in Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany. Valentine's
obituary states that they married in 1849. Maria was the
daughter of John and Gertrude RUPPEL. Valentine died in 1940 at
Tarentum, Pennsylvania; Maria died in 1891, probably at Tarentum,
Pennsylvania. Valentine and Maria, with their small daughter,
Elizabeth, immigrated to America and arrived at New York from
Germany, via London, on 12 August 1850 on the ship "Devonshire".
The three EURICHs reportedly spent some time atn Benet (sp?),
Pennsylvania before relocating and settling permanently at
Tarentum, Alleghany county, Pennsylvania. Further children born
to Valentine and Maria were: John EURICH, born 28 August 1850;
Conrad EURICH, born 6 February 1853; Mary EURICH, born 6
October
1854; Caroline EURICH and Henry EURICH, born 2 October 1856; Hite
EURICH, born 25 October 1858; and Anna EURICH, born 13 September
1861. Valentine's obituary (from the Tarentum Telegraph)
states that "In 1851 he was converted and joined the German
Evangelical Church on East Ninth Avenue." Elizabeth's birth date
has been passed down to me as 1845 which might mean Valentine
wasn't her biological father. She was born in Germany and the
next seven children were born in the U.S.
GANTZ, Carroll
eMail Address: carrgantz@worldnet.att.net
(Evangelical Lutheran)
I am looking for information about the origins of the GANTZ
family. I suspect an early connection to the GANTZ family of
Otzberg (near Gross Umstadt in the Hesse region) where records of
descendants of the Knight Gantz von OTZBERG (detailed in the
Deutsche Geslecterbuch of 1936) are found from the 1300's to the
1750's. I am particularly interested in finding evidence that
the Pferdsfeld GANTZ family came from the Gross Umstadt area.
I'm researching Johann Friedrich GANSS (GANTZ) the elder, a
wheelwright, born May 1686, died 24 December 1743 at Pferdsfeld.
His death is recorded in Pferdsfeld church records at the
Evangelical Archivstelle, Koblenz. He married, before 1721, his
first wife, Elisebethe Margarethe HATSTEIN, born Apr 1698 in
Prussia, died 12 January 1729 at Pferdsfeld. A possible father
of Johann Friedrich was Johann Frantz GANSS, born about 1660 per
church records. I am looking for a possible connection of the
Pferdsfeld GANTZ family to the earlier Gross Umstadt GANTZ family
who may have fathered Johann Frantz GANSS, namely 1) Carl
Christian GANSS, born 7 May 1637 at Gross Umstadt, died 7
November 1689; unmarried and age 23 in 1600; or George Heinrich
GANSS, born 28 August 1638 at Gross Umstadt; attended
"educational theory" school in 1657 in Hesse-Darmstadt, and in
1660 at age 22 was a student at Geissen. Both men were sons of
Johann (Hans) George GANSS (born 16 June 1605, died 29 January
1675) who was major of Gross Umstadt for 44 years (1631-1675),
and who founded the GANSS Brewery there in 1672 and became its
first brewmaster. The family was Evangelical Lutheran and lived
in Otzberg Castle (Veste Otzberg).
GIES, Richard
eMail Address: rtgceg@aol.com
(Roman Catholic)
I am searching for information about my great-great-grandparents,
who emigrated from Germany to America in 1831. Johannes GIES
(may have been spelled GIESS) was born in 1784. He married
Elizabeth KOCH in Germany. Elizabeth was born in 1799.
According to the 1860 U.S. Federal Census, Johannes and Elizabeth
were both born in Hesse-Darmstadt. They sailed aboard the ship
"Juno" with their three children and arrived at the port of New
York City 14 November 1831. Their children were: John, born
1819; Magdelina, born 1822; and Elizabeth. The family settled at
Easton, Pennsylvania and in 1840 moved to St. Marys,
Pennsylvania. The family was Catholic. I have information about
the family while in America, but I need information about their
city of origin in Germany.
HAGEN, Heather
eMail Address: david@scanningsystems.com.au
I am researching my husband's great-grandfather, Christian von
HAGEN, born circa 1816. Anecdotal evidence is that he was from
the Hesse-Kassel region. He immigrated to England circa 1830.
On 23 Apr 1842, he married Maria KOHLER or COLLER (born at
Balzer, Saratov, Volga. Maria was the daughter of Johann KOHLER,
born 1795, and Anna Elizabeth HELWIG, born 1795. Their children
were (all born near London, England): male child born 30 March
1843; Anna Elizabeth, born 25 November 1846 at St. Bethnal Green;
Christian born 9 October 1848 at St. Giles; Johann Jacob, born
1840-50, christened 30 March 1851 at Spitalfields; Augustus, born
15 October 1852 at St. George; Conrad, born 30 March 1855 at St.
George; Wilhelm, born 1857; Wilhelmine, born 26 January 1859 at
St. George; Maria Louisa, born 1861, died 28 September 1947;
Albania Rosina, christened September 1863; and Mercy Sophia, born
2 May 1864. There may also have been a child named Cyril.
Conrad, Johann, Jacob and Mercy Sophia all immigrated to
Australia. Only Conrad became a parent and our patriarch. I am
also interested in Kurt or Curt von HAGEN, who was an
administrator of the German-occupied territory of Papua, New
Guinea in 1896 and was murdered by the natives in 1897 while on
patrol. He is also a relation to Christian von HAGEN.
HALASZ, Amanda
eMail Address: rdhalasz@adelphia.net
(Roman Catholic ?)
I am looking for information on John Peter STREITENBERGER or
Peter STRIDENBARGER (as he is listed in the U.S. Federal census)
born 24 May 1792 in Bieber (near Geinhausen), Hesse-Darmstadt,
Germany. John Peter died 12 July 1857 in Ross county Ohio. His
father's name was supposedly Charles. John Peter married Barbara
HANZELMAN sometime before 1818 at Bieber. They had three
children: John Adam, John Charles, and John M. A questionable
son would be Michael STREITENBERGER. Barbara HANZELMAN was born
April 1792 at Bieber and died 1 December 1854 in Ross county
Ohio. The family's religion is thought to be Catholic.
HECKMAN, James
eMail address: ja-elheckman@voyager.net
I am researching Francis / Frances M. HECKMAN / HECKMANN, born 25
November 1843, possibly at Dieburg, Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany.
His parents may have moved from Alsace Lorraine when Francis was
two years old. His first name is also spelled Frances. Francis
immigrated to Canada with his parents, Michael and Maria
HECKMANN, circa 1844 or 1845? Francis married Catharine
ECKENSWILLER / ACKERSVILLER on 21 October 1867. He is listed in
the 1900 census as living at Sebawaing, Huron county, Michigan.
On 14 July 1909, Catharine died and she is buried in Silver Lawn
Cemetery at Sebawaing, Michigan. On 4 January 1912 at Windsor,
Ontario, Canada, Francis married Barbara ECKENSWILLER /
ACKERSVILLER, the sister of his first wife, Catharine. She
was born circa 1846 and died 4 December 1923. Francis died 20
Aug 1923 and is buried at Stratford, Ontario, Canada in the
Avondale Cemetery with his second wife, Barbara. Francis'
children were (uncertain about some of these dates): Joseph, born
18 February 1867?; John, born 30 May 1869, died 28 September
1930; Paulina (Collina?), born 23 February 1870, died 1954;
Jacob, born 5 July 1871?; Anthony, born 23 January 1873?; George,
born 30 June 1867?; Rosa and twin (twin died at birth), born 23
February 1879; died 19 December 1946; Mary and twin (twin died at
birth), born 26 April 1880, died 2 February 1949; Barbara, born
16 May 1884?; Elizabeth, born 25 April 1886, died 7 February
1961; Thersia, born 5 October 1888, died 22 February 1933; Henry,
born 5 February 1890, died 1965; and Agnes, born 24 January 1893,
died 18 December 1914.

I am looking for information on my WENDEL ancestors and on my
FREDENBURGER cousins. This is from letters written to my
great-great-grandfather, John Paul (Johann Paulus) WENDEL, who
was born
in Hesse-Darmstadt (I don't know which town) and immigrated to
Brownsville, Tennessee. John Paul WENDEL was born in 1812 in

Siblings of John Paul (Johann Paulus) WENDEL were: Leonhard
WENDEL, born Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany. (--?--) WENDEL, born
Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany married (--?--) FREDENBURGER. They had
a child named Gerge (JP) FREDENBURGER. If any one has any
information on WENDEL or FREDENBURGER, please let me know.
JAHNKE, Mary

(Roman Catholic)
I am researching my great-great-grandfather, John KOCH, who was
born 8 September 1841 in Oberhessen, Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany.
He was the son of John KOCH and Elizabeth HORNIG. He immigrated
to the United States in May 1857 and settled at Niagara Falls,
New York. He later settled at Polk, Washington county Wisconsin
where, on 11 December 1870, he married Catharine BECKER of
Germantown, Wisconsin. Catharina was born in Wisconsin. John
died on 14 September 1902 at West Bend, Wisconsin. Catharina
died between 1910 and 1920. They had five children: George,
married Maria Louise KOEPKE; Louisa, married Joseph PHENNING;
Julia, married William WARNKEY; Rosa, married Ed GROESCHEL; and
Tillie, married Alfred BENZ. The family was Catholic.
KURTZ, Barbara
email address: bekurtz@ilstu.edu
(Lutheran)
I am searching for the family of George Henry KURTZ, born circa
1823 in Hesse, possibly at or near Dorn-Durkheim. He was
Lutheran. He immigrated to Washington county Wisconsin, probably
in the 1840's. I don't know the name of his spouse, but he had
one child, Philip KURTZ, who married Anna Maria Dorothea BEIGLER,
from Hesse-Darmstadt. George Henry KURTZ died in Washington
county Wisconsin.
MARX, Bill
eMail Address: bmarx@realweb.com
I am searching for information on my great-grandfather, Jacob
MARX, born 22 Apr 1822 at Treis (?), Germany which I think is in
Hesse-Nassau, Germany. Jacob was one of nine children born to
Jacob MARX and Gertrud SANGER (?). I do not know the names of
the other eight children. Jacob emigrated from Germany to North
America on 9 May 1857 and subsequently married Margaret BLESER 22
November 1850 at Springfield, Illinois. My unverified
information is that he landed at Quebec, Canada. Regarding the
town of Treis, I have been told that Treis is today part of the
town of Rauschenberg in Hessen and that three families named Marx
live there. Right now, however, I am concentrating on Treis in
the Treis-Karden area on the Mosel River, located about 100 km
northwest of Frankfurt-Main. It is about halfway between
Frankfurt and Cologne.
NOYES, Robert
eMail address: myrobnoyes1@juno.com
(Roman Catholic)
I am researching Jacob ESSELBACH, born between 1839-1841 in
Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany. He married Julia Karoline Dorothea
WOLLENWEBER. Julia was born 26 January 1842 at Munchen, Bayern,
Germany. She was the daughter of Karl Wilhelm WOLLENWEBER (born
25 May 1810) and Maria Anna WINKELMEYER / WINKELMAYER (born 10
March 1818). Julia's father worked as a court artist for Prince
SCHOENBORN in Schloss Weissenstein at Pommersfelden, Bayern,
Germany. Jacob ESSELBACH's death date and place is unknown.
Julia died 25 November 1921 at Billings, Montana. Their children
were: Arthur William ESSELBACH, born 3 June 1873 at Santa Fe, New
Mexico; Rudolph Henry ESSELBACH, born 1 September 1876; Bertha
ESSELBACH, born February 1877; and Sophia ESSELBACH, born May
1883. Family legend has it that Jacob ESSELBACH was Roman
Catholic. Julia WOLLENWEBER emigrated from Bremen, Germany on
the ship "Weser" and arrived in New York on 11 April 1871 with
two sisters, Sophie and Friedrike WOLLENWEBER. There is a record
in the book, Germans to America, Vol. 20 of a Jacob
ESSELBACH who emigrated from Germany on the ship "Atlanta" and
arrived in New York from LeHavre and London on 27 September 1868.
I would like to find information about Jacob's parents and his
siblings and definite birth dates.
PAXTON, Dorothy

(Roman Catholic, later Protestant)
I am seeking information on Johan Engleburtis FICK of
Hesse-Nassau, born 1754, who immigrated to America in 1797. I
have information which says he was born at Fickenhutten, Nassau
Seigen. He was a blacksmith. His wife's name is unknown. His
known children at the time of immigration were Anthony, Harmonus,
Engle and Dodovia. The family settled at New York City, New
York. Johan died in 1820 at New York City. I think the family
at that time was Roman Catholic, but later became Protestant.
SPIEGEL, Albert
eMail Address: atspieg@sigmaweb.net
I am looking for the family of Johann Kasper LIEBERUM, and his
wife Elizabeth (surname unknown). I don't know when or where
Johann or Elizabeth were born. They immigrated to the U.S. about
1871. Johann died at Brooklyn, New York (date unknown). The
last time I see his name in a Brooklyn City directory is about
1875-76. My great-grandparents made a trip back to Germany in
late 1876, returning to the U.S. on 1 April 1877. My best guess
is that they may have returned his body to Germany (on this
trip). Johann and Elizabeth married in Hesse-Kassel, Germany. I
have tried church records for a number of areas around
Wellingerode; there were lots of the LIEBERUM family, but not the
right line.
WEIKEL, Paull
eMail address: bubbasnoops1@cs.com
(Roman Catholic)
I am searching for immigration records and other supporting data
for Mikel WIKEL, John WIKEL and Margaret HAXEN. Mikel WIKEL was
born about 1796 in Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany. John WIKEL was
born about 1830 in Hessen-Darmstadt and may have immigrated to
America with Mikel. A possible port of entry is in Louisiana.
John married Margaret HAXEN on 31 August 1848 in Bainbridge
Township, Dubois county, Indiana. Margaret was born about 1830
in Bayern, Bavaria, Germany. They lived at Bainbridge until
1876. In 1878, they moved to Carmi, Illinois. They then moved to
Owensboro, Kentucky. John and Margaret had a son named Mikel who
changed the family name to WEIKEL (this information obtained from
relative - since deceased - in July 1984. He also changed his
first name to Micheal then to Mike. Mikel (1796) was living in
Dearborn county, Indiana in 1850 (listed as Michael WIKEL in the
1850 U.S. Federal census, wife unknown). The family was Roman
Catholic. The family settled for quite awhile in Daviess county,
Kentucky where some relatives still reside today. The name was
misspelled as WOIKEL in the 1900 census. The 1910 census
spelling of WEIKEL is the one retained today. The sons of Mikel
(1830) were Matthew, Robert S. and Leo.
WITTIG, Milton
eMail Address: MiltMP@cs.com
I am researching Israel WITTIG, who lived in the German state of
Hessen, near Grossenenglis, in 1862, the year my grandfather was
born. Israel probably died at or near Grossenenglis after 1862.
He married Caroline ORT. I know of one son, August WITTIG, who
was born 7 January 1862 at or near Grossenenglis. This is all I
have been able to find. I have no information on when Israel was
born, where he died, and if he had any siblings.
