I am looking for information on births, marriages, locations and family members in Germany for Jacob BOOP / BOPP, born circa 1773 in Baden, Germany, married Mary ?. Their children were: Georg BOOP/BOPP born Baden, Germany circa 1795, married Barbara MAY 1819 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania; John Conrad BOOP / BOPP born Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany circa 1798, married as 2nd wife, Elizabeth HARRIS in Tuscarawas County, Ohio on 7 September 1834; Jacob BOOP/BOPP Jr. born Baden, Germany about 1800; Michael BOOP / BOPP born Baden, Germany 28 March 1804, married Elizabeth WININGS 29 June 1823 in Harrison County, Ohio; Margaret BOOP / BOPP born about 1806 in Baden, Germany, married Clemens SMELTZ 7 July 1833; and David BOOP / BOPP. Then family emigrated to Ohio sometime after 1806.

I need any information on John Joseph WEIRICH, born July 1843 in Hessen, Germany, married Caroline Klausman WAGNER in 1867, died 5 December 1893 at Cincinnati, Ohio. Caroline was the daughter of Frank KLAUSMANN and Kristina ULRICH. She was born October 1841 and died 23 August 1909. The son of John Joseph and Caroline Klausman (WAGNER) WEIRICH was George WEIRICH, born 5 August 1869 at Cincinnati, Ohio and died 4 January 1938. He married Magdalena GEHLERT of St. Leon, Indiana in 1894. Magdalene was born 1 December 1871 and died 25 February 1900. I do not have eMail.
Webmaster's Note: While Wagner is a ubiquitous surname, Weirich is less common. Yet the 7 FHLC Weirich surname search listings (17th edition CR-ROM Catalog) are not primarily directed toward this surname and no listings exist for Gehlert. Both Weirich and Gehlert should be checked in the FHL Ancestral File (to locate others searching those ancestral surnames). Also make use of the Ahnenstammkartei des Deutschen Volkes collection - see item #2 of the "Sources" link (above/below).

I am seeking information about Michael and Regina MEYER who had an address of 75 Victoriastrasse, Wiesbaden, Hesse-Nassau in the 1870's. They had a son Ernest born 27 April 1871 at St. Petersburg, Russia, unmarried, died at London, England circa 1968; and a son Richard born 26 March 1875 at Wiesbaden Germany, married Louise DAVID 22 November 1904 at London, England, died at London, England on 8 February 1942. Both Ernest and Richard became naturalized British subjects. There were at least two other children: Ludwig who was a resident of London, England in 1939 according to brother Ernst's will; and Adela (refered to in the same 1939 will as a married sister of Ernest's, Mrs. Adela STEINMETZ of 19 Rue Emile Bouillet, Brussels, Belgium.

Dr. Johann Jacob SHÜTZ / SCHEETZ, a Pietest of Frankfort au Main, Germany, in 1683 bought 4,000 acres in Pennsylvania from William Penn. He was a participant of the Land Company for which Pastorius, a Lutheran Pietest, was agent. In March 1700 Catherin Elizabeth Schütz, his widow, assigned the greater part of the Pennsylvania acreage to Daniel Falkner and others for settlement. Conrad and George Scheetz, said to be the sons of Johann Jacob Schütz, arrived at Philadelphia in 1737. My ancestor, Jabob SHEETS, (born circa 1725-1730, died 1807) of Tom Creek Hundred, Frederick County, Maryland is said to be the grandson of Johann Jacob Schütz. I am seeking the parents of my Jacob Sheets in Maryland and any further information on Johann Jacob Schütz of Frankfort au Main.

I am researching the family of Alexander E. REST who claimed he was born at Detroit in 1862. I have, however, not found one piece of evidence to support that claim. I have had people research the Michigan census for the years 1870 and 1880, but no Rest shows up. I understand that there was quite a colony of German immigrants in Detroit about that 1890, but the census has been destroyed. By 1899 he was located at Baker City, Oregon and married to my grandmother. I haven't tried Canadian records yet or Canadian ship arrival passenger lists. I have been told that they are incomplete for the 1800's. In 1983 I uncovered a letter in my aunt's picture album from a Karl Rest in NY state. He claimed his grandfather (I think his name was Wilhelm) was still in Herbsen, Hesse, Germany on the farm that had been in the family for generations. In 1993 I went to the village of Herbsen, but could not find anyone who could or would speak English. We tried the church, but found no one there who could help us. We had a tight schedule and had to leave. I need to communicate with the pastor of tht church to see if any record exists stating that an Alexander E. REST was born to any family in or around Herbsen, Hesse. It could be I have this fixation about this village only because I found the name REST located there. There may be RESTS in many other places in Germany. I appeal to you as to how I can get into records in Germany. Can it be done by mail or is the World Wide Web the best way? I'm willing to cover expenses incurred, etc. REWARD OFFERED! I do not have eMail.

I am researching Jacob Henrich HENNEMANN, born 26 September 1826 at Berghausen, Hessen, and baptized in the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Werdorf / Berghausen on 27 Sep 1829. Looking for any information, but particularly when he emigrated (probably 1856), the ship that carried him, the names of his siblings, his parents and other ancestors. Jacob Henrich HENNEMANN married Theresia METZINGER in 1858 at St. Josephs Catholic Church, Apple Creek, Perry County, Missouri. According to her obituary, Theresia was born 3 February 1838 at "Baden-Rhyne" (NOTE: My German friends tell me that "Baden Rhyne" is confusing or makes no sense.) Any ideas on how to find her origin of birth? I have checked the church records in Missouri and the 1860 and 1870 census which show her origin in some cases as Baden or Prussia. Theresia was Roman Catholic. Jacob was a blacksmith and farmer and was found in the 1860 census of Cape Girardeau County (adjoining Perry County), Missouri. He also served in the Union army in the Civil War.

Researching Katharina Elisabeth EIFERT born 14 Nov 1843 in the village of Rebgeshain, Hesse-Darmstadt, married Fritz HELD from Westfalen. Katharina and Fritz had many children. Katharina was the daughter of Johann Heinrich EIFERT and Anna Maria ROTH who were "Evangelisch" Lutherans. Johann was the son of Johann Valentin EIFERT (born in Darmstadt) and Anna Gertrud SCHNEIDER. The EIFERTs settled in Illmo / Scott City, Missouri near Cape Girardeau. I wish to communicate with any EIFERT or ROTH ancestors or families in or around the village of Rebgeshain.

MEYER, Kathleen HECKER

(Evangelical Lutheran)

I am searching for information about my Grandfather, Peter HECKER, who was born in Mainz, Germany, November 19, 1855. He served in the German army from 1875 to 1878. He emigrated to America in 1881, leaving, I believe, much of his family in Germany. His religion was, I think, German Evangelical Lutheran. Any information about Peter's early years and his family in Germany would be appreciated.

Webmaster's Note: While you submitted your entry to Westphalia, Mainz was part of Hesse prior to World War I. There is a good chance you may find Peter and his line of Heckers in the holdings of the Family History Library (FHL) on Mainz (10 topics, 41 collections) available through your nearest LDS Family History Center (FHC). Because of the large number of church record collections (30), I suggest starting with the Nammenskartei aus Kirchenbuchen (Name Index to Mainz Parish Registers) collection (40 microfilms - Hecker is found on #0934697). This should help you spot their church.

I am researching Margareta WEITZEL about 1861. Margareta was born 4 March 1833 at Elben, Hessen, Germany. She died 31 Mar 1924 in Belvidere, New Jersey. She is buried at the Belvidere Cemetery. Margareta arrived in New York City on the ship Alboni. She married Eduard KOHLMAN (See HANRL). Margareta and Eduard were living in Newark, New Jersey when the 1870 census was taken. They were in Warren County New Jersey by the 1880 census. In the 1900 census the Kohlman family had a grandson, William Kohlman, age 13, born March 1887, living with them. I do not know at this time who William's parents were. William married Alice BURD, daughter of Caleb and Anna BURD of Washington, Warren County New Jersey about 1907. In the 1910 census, William and Alice had a daughter Frances, 1 1/2 years old, living with them in Washington, New Jersey. Frances was born 6 December 1908 and died 10 December 1973 at Clinton, Hunterdon County, New Jersey. She is also buried at Clinton. In the 1920 census, I found Alice (BURD) KOHLMAN living with her parents. I was unable to find William KOHLMAN and Frances KOHLMAN. The known children of Eduard KOHLMAN and Margareta WEITZEL are: 1) Edward KOHLMAN, born 1862 in New Jersey or New York, married Elizabeth ?; 2) Emilie KOHLMAN, born 1864 in New Jersey; 3) Elizabeth KOHLMAN, born 10 February 1866 at Newark, Essex County, New Jersey, died 1 December 1927 at Belvidere, Warren County, New Jersey, married Charles Henry WRIGHT 2 July 1889; 4) Charles KOHLMAN, born 1869 at Newark, New Jersey, died 1955 at Belvidere, New Jersey.

I am looking for the ancestors or family members of Johannes BROESSEL born 20 January 1826 in Kurhessen, Germany, and his wife, Anna Gertrude DERSCH born 23 January 1829. They arrived in New York on the Ship Republik from Bremen 16 Jul 1861 with their children Peter, age 8; Maria, age 5; Anna, age 3; and Catherine, age 6 months. Johannes BROESSEL listed his occupation as a tailor and their residence as Niederasphe in Kur Hessen. The family was Lutheran and settled in Dubuque, Iowa. Otto BROESSEL was a brother of Johannes and came to the United States in the 1850's. Johannes BROESSEL's death certificate lists his parents as J. BROESSEL and Marie DERSCH or LERSCH. Anna Gertrude DERSCH's (his wife) death certificate lists her parents as Henry DERSCH and Catherine MICHEL. I have been unable to find any microfilmed church records from Niederasphe.
Webmaster's Note: I know of no Church records on microfilm from Niederasphe. There is a civil register (1808-1812) which you probably have looked at for your surnames. You best start looking in the Ahnenstammkartei des Deutschen Volkes. One of its 1,221 reels is an Ortskartei (Place Index) on microfilm #1798337, item #2. From it you might be able to learn from it if there are any listings in it for your town. The next step would be to ask if IGS has any suggestions before you seek help from a Professional Genealogist like Henning Schröder. He lives near there in Gummerbach and might have already established access to the Evangelische church records there.

I need additional information on Valentin LIEBERUM born 3 January 1830 at Wellingerode (33 kilometers southeast of Kassel), Hessen-Nassau, Prussia, married Anna Martha HOFSOMMER, died 30 July 1901, possibly in Etna, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. His burial place is unknown. According to a passenger list, he arrived 30 July 1856 in New York. Valentin is in the 1870 census of Indiana Township, Allegheny Co., Pennsylvania and in the 1880 and 1900 census of Clarion Co., Pennsylvania. His parents were Johann Claus LIEBERUM born 28 March 1801 at Wellingerode and Anna Catharina FRIEDERICH born 28 June 1806 at Hitzerode, Hessen, Germany, died 6 March 1884 at Etna, Pennsylvania. Anna Martha HOFSOMMER was probably born in Germany.

I am researching Mary KALETSCH, born 6 July 1884 in Bortshausen, Kreis Marburg, Germany; married John Henry POFAHL on 23 April 1902 in Little Rock, Arkansas; died 8 Nov 1965 in Elizabethton, Tennessee. Mary was the daughter of John (Johannes) KALETSCH, born 21 March 1847 in Bortshausen, died 10 October 1910 in Little Rock, Arkansas and Mary (Marie) DREHER (or DRAER), born 1857 in Ebsdorf, Hessen, Germany, and died in Little Rock, Arkansas. Mary's paternal grandparents were Nicolaus KALETSCH, born 30 April 1795 in Bortshausen and Elizabeth BRUSIUS, christened 25 July 1815 in Wolfshausen, Hessen, Germany. Nicholaus was the son of Jacob KALETSCH, born 10 April 1756 in Bortshausen and Anna Dorthea CONRADI. Mary's husband, John Henry POFAHL, was born 22 September 1870 in Grumsdorf, Kreis Bublitz, Pommern. He came to the U.S. via Stettlin (Stettin ??).

Bill should check the FEEFHS website index for his surnames. For example the first of two existing citations for POFAHL include 16 listings in our Die Vorfahren web database by 6 Pommern record searchers. Stettin was the seaport for Berlin on the Oder River and Stettin Passenger records are being extracted and indexed. We will report on their availability soon.

REAMON, Paul (formerly Reimann)
eMail address: cptreamon@cyberportal.net

I am searching for relatives of Conrad REIMANN born 6 January 1806 at Ibe, Hesse or Cassel-Hesse, married Anna Maria HUBNER born 17 October 1798 at Ronshausen, Hesse. They both came to Canajoharie, New York in the late 1830's with their children. Why did they leave Germany? Are there any relatives left in Germany?

RIEDE, James
eMail address: riede@netspace.net.au

I am looking for information on the following ancestors (all brothers) all born and baptised at Altenhasungen-Hessen, Germany: Christian RIEDE born 18 December 1762; Henricus RIEDE born 18 June 1752; Johannes RIEDE born 17 February 1755; Johann Heinrich RIEDE born 2 April 1757; and Jacob RIEDE born 14 June 1760. Christian RIEDE went to Holland with the Prussian army of King Frederik William II and settled in Holland after the job was done. I think that the other brothers stayed in Germany, but I have no records to prove that. I am also looking for information about Johannes RIEDE born circa 1730; Gerlach? RIEDE born circa 1735; and Johannes Wilhelm RIEDE born circa 1752. According to the records in Beuna, they all lived in the Kassel area.
Webmaster's Note: FHL microfilm of records from Altenhasungen in Kries Wolfhagen Hesse do not start until 1809 (Civil records start 1874). Please see the "Suggestions" page listed above and below. You might want to consider checking the Ahnenstammkartei records using FHL microfilm at your nearest Family History Center. Since you live in Austria, you might want to visit Leipzig to research the original collection there.

No microfilm or records in the FHLC or in the catalog of the Zentralstelle füur Genealogie at Leipzig appear to exist for Gerlach. This may require you to make contact with the church authorities and/or visit Gerlach.

I am seeking information on John SCHNEIDER / SNYDER born September 1793 at Spetzwingle, Hessen, Germany, died Mar 1884 in Peru, IL. He married 1) Elizabeth HOSE who died in 1829 in Germany; 2) Eva HEMMEL born about 1796 in Germany, died 7 September 1894 at Kankakee, IL. He is said to have been a landowner, farmer, and government gamekeeper in Germany. He emigrated to the U.S. and settled in Bureau County, Illinois in 1847.

The children of his first marriage to Elizabeth HOSE were: Henry born 9 November 1816 in Hessen-Cassel, married Cecelia DOLL, died 24 July 1905 at Peru, Illinois; John born 14 November 1819 at Darmstadt, Germany, married 1) _____ LININGER, 2) Rebecca HALL, died 12 May 1916 at Peru, Illinois; and Catherine born before 1829 in Germany, married Andrew SCHLITT.

The children of his second marriage to Eva HEMMEL were: Juliana born 16 Sep 1829 in Spetzwingle, Germany, married Jacob SCHAFFER, died 19 October 1901 at Hastings, Nebraska; Edward W. born 17 February 1840 at Spetzwingle, Germany, married Julianna WAGNER, died 15 Mar 1910 in Nemaha County, Nebraska; Henry J. born 25 August 1844 at Schenstorf, Germany, married Delia R. I am researching Maria KRESSEL, born 1831 and died at Louisville, Kentucky in 1873. She married Johannes BAISCH in 1852 in St. Peter's German Lutheran Church at Louisville. On the 1860 Louisville Kentucky census her birthplace is listed as Hesse; on the 1870 census, it is listed as Hesse-Kassal. Martin KRESSEL, his wife Marguerite, and his three young children emigrated to Louisville KY in 1847. They were all born in Babenhausen, Hesse-Darmstadt. I have found no record of their emigration to the U.S. in any of the Hesse records. Marguerite died at Louisville, KY in 1848. Martin returned to Babenhausen with his children prior to 1850. No record of Maria KRESSEL is found in Babenhausen or the surrounding parishes. I am positive that there was some kind of relationship between Martin and Maria because those are the only two KRESSEL families I find in the Louisville records. Maria's first born son was named William. William is not a BAISCH family name; therefore, he could have been named after Maria's father. I have written to the archives in Kassal, but there was no record of Maria KRESSEL. Can anyone offer some suggestions as to where I should search, either in Hesse-Darmstadt or Hesse-Kassal?
