I am seeking information on the family of Elizabeth BECKER, born
13 September 1857. Her mother's maiden name was SCHICK. They
were probably Catholic. Elizabeth BECKER emigrated to the U.S.
alone from Kirchhain, Kassel before 1889. She married Peter
STRASSEL at Cincinnati, Ohio.
BERG, Shirley
eMail addres: sberg1@mindspring.com
I am researching John BERG born 18 September 1808 in Hesse Cassel
(as written on 1870 Grant County, West Virginia census). He was
in Company I, 7th West Virginia Infantry from 1 May 1861 until 9
January 1863 during the Civil War; he was a prisoner 16 months, 7
days. He died 17 March 1884 in Grant County, West Virginia. We
cannot find burial site for him or his wife, Elizabeth. He
married Elizabeth BERMAN who was born in 1811 in Germany; date of
her death in West Virginia is unknown. Their children were:
1. Henry BERG born July 1840, possibly Baltimore, Maryland
(cannot obtain records). He died 14 July 1921 and is buried in
Lahmansville Cemetery at Lahmansville, West Virginia. (This is
my husband's great-grandfather and the first child of the family
born in America.) Henry married Ann Rebecca TUCKER in 1866.
2. Joshua BERG born 5 January 1845; died 2 December 1917 and is
buried in Maysville Cemetery at Maysville, West Virginia. 3.
Mary BERG born 1847 in Virginia; died 14 January 1892 and is
buried in Lahmansville Cemetery at Lahmansville, West Virginia.
4. Lewis Edward BERG born 1852 in Virginia; died 26 July 1926
and is buried in Lahmansville Cemetery at Lahmansville, West
Virginia. 5. Anna Maria BERG born 20 March 1854; died 18
December 1857 in Hary County, West Virginia. I live in the
general area of West Virginia where a lot of this information has
been obtained and I am still searching to fill in holes. But we
have never been able to get any information from Germany. I have
no knowledge of any other siblings of John BERG (1808), but there
is a possibility of a brother Frederich BERG, but I have no
confirmation on this. A fellow researcher has this line and we
have been working together to try and get something from Germany.
Any suggestions or information will be appreciated.
BIEHL, Marilyn

I am researching Henry W. FRIES born in Hessen, Germany. He is
believed to have been a judge at Richland
Center, Wisconsin. He married Margaret WOLF. They had a
daughter, Ida M. FRIES born 1841 at
Lewisburg, Pennsylvania. She died in 1921. Ida married William
M. BARNES in 1863 in Wisconsin and had
seven children.
BIRKENHOLZ, Dan
eMail address: birk@pcpartner.net
I am looking for information on the John Christian BIRKENHOLZ
family from Vielbach?, Hessen, Germany.
His son, John, was born 30 October 1791, and emigrated to Iowa
between 1852 and 1856. He married Anna
Margaretha STRATER at Vielbach on 3 February 1815 and had a son,
John William, born 9 February 1835.
John Christian BIRKENHOLZ was married to Anna Katherine
BALKER.

I am researching my great-grandfather, George REILING, born 22
March 1839 in Hessen, Germany. He was
the son of Henry REILING who was also born in Hessen, and Kater
LA MOYNE/ LAMOYNE who was born
in France. George REILING emigrated to Cook County, Illinois
circa 1852, presumably with his parents. He
married 1) Alvine KLEISS who was born in Germany and died in 1901
at Chicago, Illinois. He married 2)
Catherine WEISBACKER who was born at Lamsheim, Germany. George
REILING died in 1924 at Forest
Park, Cook County Illinois. All this information came from his
death certificate and those of his wives.
Presumably he was Lutheran as his daughter, Elizabeth Reiling
Mortimer LAMBACHER was Lutheran. I
haven't done any research in Germany before and don't know where
to start. Any help would be greatly
appreciated.
COMP, John
eMail address: KD22718@aol.com
(Methodist?)
I am searching for ancestors of John COMP who I believe was born
in Hessen, Germany on 26 December
1831. He married Celia MORGAN on 27 November 1853 at West
Bridgewater, Pennsylvania. Celia was born
at Chicopee, Hampden County, Massachusetts on 29 March 1836.
They had nine children; one died in infancy.
Their children were: Clara L. COMP, may have been born in
Pennsylvania, married Joseph W. MONROE;
Mary COMP, may have been born in Pennsylvania, married John
STAPLETON, Harry Franklin COMP, may
have been born at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, married Mamie
MCCARTHY on 9 April 1890 at Milwaukee,
Milwaukee Coounty, Wisconsin; Charles B. COMP, may have been born
in Pennsylvania, married Julia
LAWLER on 24 April 1889 at Milwaukee, Wisconsin (she died after
giving birth to a stillborn child on 17
August 1907; August C. COMP born 30 October 1867, may have been
born in Pennsylvania, married Christina
PRINZ on 23 November 1892, died 25 September 1914; Anna COMP, may
have been born in Pennsylvania or
Indiana; John W. COMP born 17 August 1873, may have been born in
Pennslvania, Indiana or Illinois,
married Jennie LAUF on 10 May 1898; and Emma Sylvia COMP born 27
June 1876, may have been born in
Pennsylvania, Indiana or Illinois, married John MONHEIMER. From
other research I have done, they may
have been Methodist. John was a glassblower by trade. They must
have started moving west at some time
going through Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and ending up in
Wisconsin. Most of the information I have has been
from documents at the Milwaukee Co. court house.
DADDARIO, Lynda

I am researching my great-grandparents who were born at Villigen,
Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany. I found the
following information on the death records I have obtained:
Heinrich Conrad BENDER, born: 5 February 1848
at Villigen, Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany; His father was Conrad
BENDER, his mother ? He married Sophia
STIEHLER on 22 September 1870 at St. Johns Lutheran Church, Erie,
PA and died 10 January 1935. Sophia
STIEHLER was born 15 April 1848 at Villigen, Hessen-Darmstadt,
Germany. Her mother was Catherine
GRAF and her father was Conrad STIEHLER. She died 8 January
1918.

I researching Christian STEINMILLER, born at Darmstadt, Hessen in
1842 and his wife, Sabina, born in
Baden in 1844. They came to Michigan before 1862, possibly in
1850. Christian STEINMILLER's father's
name could be Johann. I do not know when and in what
village/town they were born, to whom, or if they were
married before their arrival. I have searched ship records
without any luck. Their children were: Martin born
1864; George born 1869; Frank born 1869; Henry born 1871; Adolph
born 1875; and Oscar born 1876. I
know that Christian's parents were both from Darmstadt and that
Sabina's father was from Darmstadt and her
mother was from Baden. I have yet to find their graves. I have
complete info on
Frank and Oscar.
HAAG, Don

I am looking for information on George Adam HAAG who was born in
Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany on 29
September 1844. I do not know the date he emigrated to the
United States, but he married Barbara
WIEDEMANN in Louisville, Kentucky on 18 Aug 1868. He was a
member of the Evangelical Church.
HUMPHREY, Jackie
eMail address: jhumphre@ix.netcom.com
I am researching Friderick Ludwig VON VULTEE from Hachborn,
Hessen, Germany, born circa 1773, and his
wife, Gertrude WERTHEIM from Hesse Cassel, born circa 1778. They
emigrated to Montgomery County,
Pennsylvania circa 1800-06. Gertrude's father is said to be a
Lutheran pastor. I need information on her
family. Friderick's parents are said to be Wilhelm Christian VON
VULTEE and Anna or Martha
SPORLEDER or SPORLETTER.
KLEIN, Kombiz
eMail address: kklein@ped1.med.uth.tmc.edu
I am looking for information on Johannes KLEIN who married
Margaretha DUMONT. Margaretha was born
at Hessisches Nierstein, Germany in 1782 or 1783 and emigrated to
the U.S. with her son, Joseph KLEIN.
Joseph KLEIN was a stone worker in the town of Nierstein in 1855,
married, with at least two children.
Joseph KLEIN, his wife (name unknown), two children, and the
widowed Margaretha DUMONT KLEIN
emigrated together to Wisconsin on an unknown date, but most
likely between 1855
and 1861.
KOESTNER, Pat
eMail address: Wiz196@aol.com
My ancestor, Peter IMEL, is supposed to have been one of four
brothers who came to America to fight for the British during the
Revolutionary War. His brothers were Henry, Thomas, Jacob, and
Joseph. Peter IMEL was born in Hesse-Kassel, Germany between
1756 and 1764. He married Susanna KIRKLAND 12 August 1787 in
Frederick, Maryland. He lived in Virginia, Kentucky, and
Indiana. He died in Fairland, Indiana on 3 January 1849.
Peter's children were: Maria, John, Henry, George, Thomas,
Peggy, Samuel, Sarah, Peter, Anna, Catherine, Conrad, and James.
I believe Peter was a farmer. I do not know his religion. I am
anxious to find any information that there may be in Germany
about the men who were sent to America to fight during the
Revolutionary War.

I am researching Anna Sibylla SCHARMANN, born about 1691 at
Fischborn, Isenburg, Hesse, Germany. She married Andreas Franz
GUNDERMAN (also called Anders Franz COUNTRYMAN) about 1715.
Andreas' father was Hans Frederick GUNDERMAN or Johann Friederich
GUNDERMAN and his mother was Maria Barbara SIMON or Anna Barbara
SIMON. Andreas / Anders was born about 1695 at Niefern, Germany
or in 1696 at Entzberg, Niefern, Germany. They were
Presbyterians. They emigrated to Albany, New York; then to
Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, I believe on the Snoe Greg.
LEES, Judith

I am seeking information on Peter FINIFF and his wife Elizabeth
BARMONT. Peter was born in Hesse-Darmstadt about 1810.
Elizabeth was born there also, about 1811. They were married
before 1833. They emigrated to the U.S.(place unknown), probably
before 1833, when their first son was born. Peter FINIFF died 5
September 1887 at McConnellsburg, Fulton County, Pennsylvania.
The census information I have indicates that they lived there
from at least 1850. My other great-great-grandfather was from
Hahn, Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany. He changed his name from BERMOND
to BERMON to BARMONT after coming to Fulton County, PA. Is it
possible that FINIFF also was not always spelled that way? The
BERMONDS were Waldensians. Since Peter FINIFF let his daughter
marry a BARMONT, would it fololow that Peter and Elizabeth were
also Waldensians? Peter was a Lutheran when he died.
LINK, Melissa
405 South Spring Street, Port Washington, Wisconsin, USA
eMail adress: MLWisc@aol.com
I am researching John LINK, born 1841; Adam LINK, born about
1837; and William LINK, born about 1846. They are supposedly the
sons of Andreas LINK and Agnes SPECHT. We think that they
emigrated in 1856 on the ship "Genessee". They ended up in
Wisconsin in an area known originally as "Washington" in Ozaukee
County, now Saukville and Port Washington, Wisconsin. We know
that John and Adam were here for sure. There are naturalization
papers for a 20-year old Andreas LINK, but at a much later date -
1864 - for this county. Andreas and Agnes LINK are listed
on a census as having children named Adam, John, and William,
plus living with a woman named Elizabeth and a stray child named
Marie MARTIN who they told the census taker was from Luxembourg.
The LINKS were from Hesse-Darmstadt, but John LINK's wife was
from Luxembourg. Family folklore is that John, Adam, and William
came over here alone in 1878 and that William was lost forever at
the Port of New York. None of this was verified by the 1860,
1870, 1880, or 1890 U.S. Federal census lists or land records.
In fact, we came up with a ton of LINKS living here as early as
1848: Bonifaz, Theresia, Phillip, Robert, Henry, Jerome, George,
etc. I have checked every single one of these out and it appears
they came from Milwaukee. Until 1837, Port Washington /
Saukville was only connected to Milwaukee by a bark Indian
trail.
Other data I have found: John LINK married Katarina LEDENBACH in
1865 in Port Washington, Wisconsin and they had 15 children.
Adam, John's brother, moved to Sioux Falls, SD, and formally
changed his name to LINCK. John and Katherina's son, also a
William, went to live with Adam for awhile and also formally
changed the spellikng of his last name to LINCK. I can't find
records on Andreas, Agnes, and the elusive Elizabeth
LINK, or Mary MARTIN or Andreas' son, William.

I am researching the surnames BUXMANN and KOCH. I have traced
the BUXMANN line to Reinheim, a few
kilometers from Darmstadt, but the first name I have is Peter
BUSSMAN born 1585 at Gundernhausen, a few
kilometers from Darmstadt and Reinheim. He was married in the
Lutheran Church at Reinheim, but possibly
the family could be listed in the Catholic Church records in
Gundernhausen before Martin Luther split in 1520.
We have the family records onward from 1585 and are interested in
finding anything older. The KOCH
surname records we have begin with Johann Adam KOCH, born 1743 in
Germany, possibly Hessen. He and
two other male relatives left for Russia in 1767, where they
founded the village of Kolb. We are looking
for the village in Germany where this family emigrated from.
MEYER, Joseph

(Lutheran ?)
I am looking for more information on Ann Elizabeth BACH, born
1820 in Hessen, Germany, and came to Pennsylvania. She married
1) George MACKER sometime in the 1830's in Pennsylvania, Maryland
or Ohio. They had the following children: Catherine born 1835,
married Theron SHANDROW; Elizabeth born 1836 in in Maryland or
Ohio, married James MCWILLIAMS; Phillip born 1838 in Ohio; George
W. born 1842 at Quincy, Adams county, Illinois; and Louisa C.
born 1846 at Quincy, Illinois. Ann Elizabeth married 2)
Carryton KELLER in 1850-1858. She died in Calhoun County,
Illinois and is buried there. She was a Protestant, probably of
the Lutheran faith.
I also need any information on William NEITZERT, born 1832 in
Hessen, Germany. He might have been the
son of Henry and Catherine NEITZERT. William married Catherine
GREENSTREET in Morgan County,
Missouri in 1854 and they had the following children: Elizabeth
born 1854; Mary Ann born 1855; John born
1857; Hannah born 1859; Anna Sophia born 1863; Abigail born 1865;
Susan born 1867; and Thomas born
1873. All children were born in Missouri. They lived in Morton,
St. Clair, and Benton counties in Missouri.
William died in 1915 in Benton County, Missouri. His wife
Catherine died in Woodruff County, Arkansas
about 1921.
MILLER, Jay F.
eMail address: jayfmiller@mindspring.com
I am trying to find information on the parents of the following
individuals: Wilhelm MILLER born in
Camberg, Hessen Nassau on or about 12 August 1817 (he had a
brother Phillip who died in Germany in 1901).
Wilhelm married Magdalena WEISS, born 10 March 1815 at an unknown
location, in the early 1840's. One of
their sons, William Phillip MILLER, born 21 February 1848 at
Biedenkopf, Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany,
married Louisa Frances FRANK, born 29 September 1855 in Denstedt
(then Prussia), on 6 May 1875 at
Johnstown, Pennsylvania. Louisa's mother's maiden name may have
been GRUNAUER.
NAGLE, Jim & Dianna
eMail address: unique1@cyberg8t.com
I am searching for information on John NAUGLE, born about 1830,
married to Katherine CONRAD, born about 1840. Both were born in
Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany. They emigrated to Pittston, Luzerne
County, Pennsylvania between 1861 and 1865 with their daughter,
Leana NAUGLE, born in Hesse-Darmstadt in 1861. Any information
would be appreciated.
RHOADES, Lori
eMail address: Kuell1@aol.com
I am researching the family of Hans Henry OHLENDORF born circa
1805 in Kur Hessen. I believe that he
might have come to the U.S. with his son Henry, daughter-in-law
Sophia, and grandson Henry when they came
circa 1868 or 1869. Hans is shown on the 1870 census for Bremer
County, Iowa. I have been unsuccessful
finding him on a passenger list.
SWALM, Larry
eMail address: ls-dfi@bconnex.net or lsdfi@hotmail.com
(Lutheran)
My name is Larry Swalm and I am trying to conduct a search on my
great-great-great grandfather and
grandmother. Conrad SCHWALM and Mary RUHL left Hesse-Cassel and
emigrated to Canada (through
Montreal, Canada) in 1834 with 2 sons and a daughter. We don't
know exactly where in Hesse-Cassel they
came from only that Conrad worked in a grist mill (flour mill)
carrying large bags of flour. They were very
poor and came to Canada to receive a free 100 acre parcel of
land. All that is known of Mary is that she was a
devout Lutheran and was troubled at their common law state of
marriage. I have connected with the Johannes
Schwalm of Schwalmstadt and they are searching but there are many
Schwalms there also. Is it possible to
find a list of Lutheran churches in that area or perhaps would
there be some documentation with the local
municipality regarding the advertising of such "new starts in a
new country"?. There really aren't any ship lists
in Canada dating before 1870 and the ship lists from Hamburg
don't go back farther than 1850. Any
suggestions on where to look next? Thank you in advance.
Webmaster's Note: There are 3 listings of the SCHWALM surname
in "Surname Search" section of the
the FHL Catalog. One refers to the Johannes Schwalm Historical
Association of Gratz, Pennsylvania. While
this association is primarily interested in Hessian soldiers and
their descendants in Nortth America, they have
has an extensive library and many active members of this family
doing genealogy research. Look up these
listings and contact this association
STURMFELS, Walter
eMail address: Sturm5@aol.com
I am researching Henry STURMFELS, born 1868 in Gross area of
Hessen, Germany. He came to America in
1885. He married Anna ? in 1886. Henry was the son of Heinrich
Jacob STURMFELS, born 18 October 1840 at Klein-Umstadt, Germany
and Anna Margaretha ZINNEL, born 8 November 1839 at Ulfa,
Germany. Death dates are unknown.

I am researching my great-grandparents, George and Barbara KOCH.
Barbara's maiden name is KROPF. Both were born in 1831. They
emigrated to the U.S. in 1882 from Mansbach, Hesse-Darmstadt,
Germany. I am looking for church records from there. They were
Lutheran. I would like to find their wedding date. George's
parents were given as Henry and Margaret KOCH. I do not know
Margaret's maiden name. I would like to find siblings of all of
them and information on their parents.
THOMPSON, Robert
eMail address: pthom681@midohio.net
I am searching for any information regarding Michael
STREITENBERGER, born 16 Jul 1827. The U.S.
census of 1900 states that he was born at Darmstadt, Hessen,
Germany and that he immigrated to the U.S. in
1832 (allegedly with his parents and siblings). Michael
STREITENBERGER married Barbara Ellen STARR on
26 August 1849 in Ross county Ohio. One probable sibling is John
M. STREITENBERGER, born 1825, also
at Darmstadt (according to the 1860 census). Michael
STREITENBERGER was Catholic. The 1860 U.S.
census of Pike county, Pee Pee Township, Ohio lists Michael, John
M., Adam, John C., and Charles
STREITENBERGER in households #986, #987, #989, #990, and #991
respectively. Most of these
STREITENBERGERS are buried in the St. Francis Xavier Cemetery
just south of Chillicothe, Ross county,
Ohio and north of Wavery, Pike Co., Ohio. I would like to know
who Michael's parents and siblings
were.

eMail address: munger@dolsun.dol.state.nj.us
I am seeking the town of origin of Andreas GUSS born circa
1746-48 in Hessen-Nassau, died 2 February 1780 at Kreuzstaetten.
He married twice; the name of his first wife is unknown. They
had one son who is listed on the Vienna register. His second
wife was Anna MOLER / MAHLER whom he married at Kreuzstaetten.
They had two children: 1) Andreas, born circa 1778-1779 at
Kreuzstaetten, married Margaretha KOENIG in 1803 at
Kreuzstaetten; and 2) Margaretha, born circa 1779-80 at
Kreuzstaetten, married Joannes Georgius PELJUNG/BELJUNG in 1801.
That is all the information I have. Monika Ferrer suggested the
name GAUS / GAUSS as well. Vienna and Jarhmarkt registrations
read GUSS and earliest Kreuzstaetten records read GUSS. Later,
the Hungarian "Z" replaced the last "S" and the name became GUSZ,
as it remains.
VERRET, Caryl
eMail address: maxver@acadiacom.net
I am looking for information on Frederick SANDROCK who came to
the U.S. in the mid-1800's. He fought in
the Civil War and, according to newspaper accounts, had a
distinguished military career. His obituary
in the New Orleans Times-Picayune notes he was born in
Hesse Cassel in 1837 and came to the
U.S. in 1857. He died at New Orleans, Louisiana on 4 April 1910.
Looking through the Hessen surname list
of those leaving that area in the 19th century, I did not find
him listed.
VETOR, Jim
eMail addressnycpc@cox.net
My great-great-grandfather, John VETOR, was born in Koressin,
Germany on 22 November 1817. He emigrated to America with his
father in 1831, landing at New York City. The name could have
been spelled VIETOR or VEEDER. This is the only information I
have. It was taken from a newspaper interview with John. I have
other information I can't verify saying he came from Neustadt,
Germany. Records from the Catholic parish, St. Trinitas, show a
Johannes VIETOR born 22 November 1825 (eight years difference in
the birth dates). Johannes VIETOR's father's name was Georg
VIETOR and his mother's name was Anna FABER. His godfather's
name was Johannes VIETOR. Church records show Johannes VIETOR
immigrated to America. Neustadt was a part of the old German
province of Kurhessen. This information could be correct. I
know a lot of people back then didn't really know their age and I
also know that spelling of names was changed a lot when they
landed in America. My great-great-grandfather, John VETOR, said
in the newspaper article that he came to America with his father
in 1831 and that after about three weeks in New York City, they
moved to Buffalo, New York. Two years later they moved to
Detroit, Michigan. He traveled many years as a seaman seeing the
world. He fought with the First Michigan Infantry, Company C
during the Mexican War. He later lived at Greenfield, Indiana
and spent his final years at Fairmount, Indiana. This is the
only information I have on him. Any help will be
appreciated.

I am researching George Frederick GIMMY, born approximately 1813
in Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany, married Anna Maria ? They had
one
son, John. George Frederick GIMMY and his family, and one
brother named Adam GIMMY, emigrated in 1840 from Hesse-Darmstadt
to the U.S., landed at New Orleans, and went to St. Louis,
Missouri. They then moved to Carrollton, Illinois. I am also
looking for Valentine WEBER who came to the U.S. from
Hesse-Darmstadt in approximately 1840.
