I am looking for information on ancestors of Jacob AHL, born
(Westfalia?) 29 April 1837) and his second wife
Christine Zimmermann born (Westfalia?) 16 March 1852. The local
death index for Jacob AHL lists his father
as Albhard AHL and Christine's parents as Henry ZIMMERMANN and
Cathrine FLENDER. Jacob and
Christine sailed from Rotterdam on the "WA Sholten" and arrived
at New York 18 October 1886, with their
children Lena (12 years old, child by first marriage), August (9
years old) and Fredrick (7 years old).
Germans to America Passenger list shows Jacob was a
Laborer. Information on Jacob's first wife
and location of their birth's would aid in my research greatly.
Thank you for your help,
BEILER, Marilyn
eMail address: GRANBYE@aol.com
(Evangelical and Reformed)
I am researching William BLICE and Amelia FRITZ of Westphalia,
Germany. William was born in 1848 and Amelia was born 27 April
1848. They emigrated to the USA in 1882 with sons Carl (born 24
August 1874, my grandfather), William (born 1879) and Fritz (born
1880). Their name may have changed or may have been spelled
differently. I believe they belonged to the Evangelical and
Reformed Church in Germany because that was their church
affiliation in The US.
Webmaster's Note: Have you checked the 1882 Ship Passenger
Lists for Hamburg (both direct and indirect passage)? Among the
47 listings for Fritz in the surname search section of the FHL
Catalog, the surname FITTS is often seen and an alternate
spelling. If the Hamburg ship records do not help, then as a
long shot you might search Die Ahnenstammkartei des
Deutschen Volkes and look for FRITZ / FITTS and BLICE
listings that show a Westphalia place of origin.
BROLAND, William
eMail address: Lyauteylad@aol.com
(Lutheran)
Wilhelm BROELAND, born 30 January 1851 and christened 31 January
1852 at Hattingen, Westfalen, Preussen
married Lisette EUGLEBRECHT. They emigrated to the USA in 1888.
Their children were Wihelm
BROELAND Jr., born 29 January 1875; Augusta Broeland, born 20
July 1879; Gustav (Augustus) Broeland
born 20 July 1879; Karl Broeland born 10 October 1881; Satie
Broeland born 22 December 1883 and Heinrich
Broeland born 12 May 1886. Satie (Sadie, Lisette) ENGELBRECHT
(Wilhelm's wife) was born 20 February
1852.
Webmaster's Note: Hattingen, Westfalia has civil registration
(1810) and Jewish records (1847-1874) on
FHL microfilm. There are also 8 record collections of
churchbooks on FHL microfilm, but you did not
indicate their religion.
BUSSANMUS, Carol
4150 51st Street, Des Moines, Iowa 50310- U.S.A.
email address: GANDOLF@CONCENTRIC.NET
I am looking for information on the place of origin of
Christopher BUSSANMAS he was born in 1816 family
books say Rietburg Westphaila Germany but the census says
Prussia. He has seven children of which five were
born in Germany: Otto born 6 January 1848; Gertrude born 1 May
1853; John (Johann) born 17 December
1855; Henry (Heinrich) born 15 May 1858 and Mary born 5 October
1861. I found them in the Germans
to America index; it listed them as leaving Bremen and
arriving at Baltimore on 5 June 1868. In that
index the name was spelled BUSEMANN. I have also found it
spelled BUSSANMUS. Otto later married Julia
MUELLER after they were in the U.S. Her father was Johann MULLER
also spelled MILLER. They also
came from Germany but not at the same time. Any information you
can offer would be a great help I have
been stuck on this one for a year.
CLANCY, Nancy CASTROP
eMail address: Anjoutooo@aol.com
(Catholic)
I am looking for information regarding the CASTROP family. They
emigrated from Castrop, Westphalia, Germany approximately 1850 -
1870 and settled at Westphalia, Missouri, USA. Catholic family.
My Great Grandfather named Henry Castrop was born in Westphalia,
worked for railroad as foreman, finally settled in Detroit,
Michigan with his wife: Anne LUEKENHOFF?. They had two children:
Charles, a phyysician who died 1959 at Detroit, Michigan and
Vincent, a Vice President of General Motors Corp who died 1988 at
St. Clair Shores, Michigan. Many thanks to those who can help
me.
Wemaster's Note: Your location of origin is now called
Castrop-Rauxel. In addition to a Civil registration (1810-1814 -
4 reels) Protestant and Jewish records, there are two collections
of Catholic church registers (1665-1929, 7 reels; 1815-1874, 3
reels of microfilm) which should yield Henry and other ancestors
from that town.
CLARK, Patricia Walscheid
eMail address: Patwc751@aol.com
(Protestant)
I am looking for Prussian ancestors of great grandfather Julius
Emil WALSCHEID. He was born February 1827, possibly in the area
of Solingen, Germany. He emigrated to the US and by 1870 had
settled in Union Hill, Union City, NJ. He married Josephine
KESSEL and died in 1911. He may have emigrated about 1850, but I
am not sure of this. He had two sons prominent in Hudson County,
NJ, Emil WALSCHEID, attorney and Arthur John WALSCHEID MD. The
family was Protestant in the US.
Webmaster's Note: If you are interested there is a ton of
stuff on Germans from Solingen on microfilm that will permit you
to determine the validity of your Solingen presumption. Lutheran
churchbooks span 1659-1881 and Catholic ones cover 1752-1809. A
Zivilstandregister (Civil Register - 18 reels) exists from
1822-1920. Of less interest might be a book at the FHL which
includes a medieval (1487) list of Solingen subjects of Wilhelm
II, Duke of Berg.
You should first look at the 35 microfilm reel FHL collection
called "Auswanderungsakten" (emigrants and immigrants from
1822-1920) for the Düsseldorf district. For our German
browsers,
the original manuscripts are in the Hauptstaatsarchiv at
Düsseldorf. They also include the locations of Barmen,
Duisberg, Düsseldorf, Elberfeld, Essen-Oberhausen, Geldern,
München, Gladbach, Grevenbroich, Kempen, Cleve, Crefeld,
Lennep, Mettmann, Moers, Mühlheim, Neuss, Rees, Ruhrort
(Duisberg) as well as Solingen. For Solingen, this collection
spans 1852-1860 (film #1347246), 1860-1881 (film #1347247) and
1881-1897 (film#1347248, items 1-2).
As for your Kessel surname, there are 8 listings of German and
Dutch Kessel lines in the surname section of the 17th edition of
the FHL Catalog on CD-ROM.
ELLIS, Kelly BARTZ
eMail address: FLOWERFISH@aol.com
(Roman Catholic?)
I am searching for great grandparents: Peter BARCINIAK born 27
October 1871 of Catholic faith who was a
tailor. He married Rose DRAHEIM, born 17 August 1875. Both were
born in Germany. They had Three
children in Germany: Martha, born 28 December 1898; Wanda, born
16 June 1900; and Walter born 2 June
1902. It was said that Wanda was born in Westphalia. I do not
know Rose's religion. My Grandfather Walter
was a Catholic so Rose must have been also. Rose had a sister
Bertha, a sister Veronica, a brother Joseph, and
maybe more. Rose's Mother's parents were Elizabeth KARCZYNSKA
Draheim and Albert DRAHEIM. Was
this family from Westphalia? Some of the older Aunts say DRAHEIM
had a "Von" in front of the name. How
do I find this out? Thank you.
ENGELBRECHT, Robert
eMail address: RENGELBRECHT@onaustralia.com.au
After a lot of searching, I am led to believe that the family
name ENGELBRECHT may have originated in the Westfalia region. I
am seeking any information or a guide to information on the
ENGELBRECHT name.
Webmaster's Note: You must know the full name of your
pedigree ancestor - the
one who came to Australia. By reading the instructions above
again and posting a bit of
what you know as to his full name, vital dates, emigration date
or era, wife's maiden name
and the names of the first generation of his children, you will
permit others to offer more
specific help based on when he left Europe. You should also use
the hotlink above to the
Website Index to see if the two persons named Englebrecht (in
America from Bavaria and
Germany in 1872) might be related or if those in Iowa or Illinois
German-American
churchbook extractions give you any clues.
I suggest you contact the Immigrant
Genealogy
Society and request a German Telephone Book lookup for your
surname in Westphalia. There are 4 sources of Engelbrecht
genealogy in the FHL (Salt Lake City) but none listed from
Westphalia. You should also look in the Ancestral File,
available at your nearest LDS Family History Center, as it may
have helpful leads.
FORREST, Robert
email address: forrest@whidbey.com
I am seeking information on the marriage and ancestry of Carl
Dietrich MEYER, born 21 September 1803,
probably near Minden, and his wife Louisa Sophia KRUMME, born 30
April 1812 at Eisbergen (near Minden).
Children were born at Eisbergen: Friedrich, born 26 July 1835;
Wilhelmina Louisa Sophia, born 7 October
1837; Sophia ???; Carl, born 16 April 1842; Wilhelm, born about
1844; and Heinrich, born 23 November
1846. They emigrated to Wisconsin, USA in 1848 and settled on a
farm at Herman, Sheboygan, Wisconsin
about 1850. Two more children born in the USA, Louise and
August. Religion: Lutheran.
HAMBLIN, Christi
eMail address: CHamb81823@aol.com
I am searching for any information on H. Karl (Carl) Ludwig
(Louis) TEGELER who was born at Minden
Germany 16 February 1833 and emigrated to the US in the early
1850's. First he went to the Worden Illinois
area where he married Caroline Wilheline MOEHLE / MOHLE / MAHLER
(MÖHLE in Germany). He
later move to the Concordia Missouri area. Thanks for any
help.
Webmaster's Note: You need to make plans to spend some
quality research time using microform
resources from the FHL (Salt Lake City) at your nearest LDS
Family History Center. The FHL Catalog shows
9 topics with 18 different collections. You decline to state
Carl's religion, but there are 18 collections of
churchbooks plus civil registration, obituaries, etc. There are
four citations for Moehle in the FHL Surname
Search section. Start by reviewing the resources in the FHL
Catalog, looking at the IGI and checking the
Ancestral File for the possibility that others are searching your
line or your surnames.
HUXHOLD, William E.
eMail address: hux@uwm.edu
(Lutheran)
I am looking for the origins of the surname HUXHOLD, also
recorded as HUXHOLTZ in England. In
particular, I am looking for: 1) the father of George August
Ferdinand HUXHOLD. George was born at
Katherinhagen, Oberkirchen House Number 50, on 5 June 1829, at 20
minutes after 9:00 PM. I believe all
HUXHOLDs were Luthern. I understand that he married Katrina
BACHMAN (1831-1898) and they emigrated
to DuPage county, Illinois, in 1849, and proceeded to have 11
children (of which I am descended). 2) any
information about Thieleke HUXHOLD, born at Buchholz, Westfalen,
Germany, about 1629. Who were his
parents, where were they born, and what children did he have? 3)
any information about John HUXHOLD,
born in 1701 in England, I believe. A son of this John HUXHOLD
was a Captain on one of England's finest
ships in those days (in the Merchant Marines, I believe), and he
was said to be overpowered in "troublesome
times" and was forced to take his ship out of London Harbor and
into the English Channel to get a crowd of
200 away and out of danger. The ship became stranded on the
"Holland Rocks" during a big storm and only a
small number of lives were saved. John HUXHOLD and some others
were good swimmers and swam to shore.
He did not dare go back, for he would undoubtedly have been
blamed and accused of insubordination. So he
walked and walked and finally got to Katherinhagen in Hessen,
Germany. 4) any information about Adamus
Andreas HUXHOLTZ, Wolradus HUXHOLTZ, Johannes Ludovicus HUXHOLTZ,
Joannes Henricus
HUXHOLTZ, who were notable doctors and published writers of
medical publications in England between 1659
and 1701. 5) the identification of the father of "Joh." Conrad
HUXHOLD who was married to Anne ENGEL
BORCHERS in Saint Martin Church of Honhorst, Schaumburg province
and their children. 6) any information
about a woman with the surname of REINHOLD. The HUXHOLD family
oral history describes the origin of
the name HUXHOLD as being created by an Englishman named HUXLEY
who met a woman from Germany
with the surname of REINHOLD on board ship in the English Channel
(was this the English seacaptain
described in #3 above?). They decided that upon marriage they
would take half of each name and combine
these for theirsurname: HUXHOLD.
MAERZ, James W.
P.O. Box 1326, Agoura Hills, California 91301-4088,
U.S.A.
(Lutheran)
I am trying to locate my paternal grandfather's sister's family.
Her maiden name was Augusta MAERZ. Her married name was Augusta
WOLF. Per a family photograph circa 1890-1900, the Wolf family
lived near Muehlheim, Alsace or Essen, Westphalia. They had
three children, 2 male, 1 female, names unknown. Her parents
were Herman MAERZ and Anna KERSTEEN of Prussia. I am going from
a photo and know nothing more about the children. Augusta had
two brothers; both were Lutheran missionaries. Carl MAERZ, my
grandfather, brought his family to USA in 1883. Herman, his
older brother, went to Africa. Augusta apparently remained in
Westphalia. I do not have eMail, but will greatly appreciate any
suggestions or information from internet genealogists.
Webmaster's Note: You might check the März /Maerz
genealogy found in the surname search section of the FHL Catalog
on FHL microfilm #1573188 item 13, available on loan for viewing
at your nearest LDS Family History Center. It makes reference to
family lines in Berlin, Westphalia and Bavaria.

Hubert KOHLE was born 4 June 1862. He lived at Luedinghausen,
Westphalia. His wife was a NOGLEMAN
born 16 January 1865 at Mettingen Tecklenberg, Westphalia. They

you know any information about these people it would be greatly
appreciated.

I am searching for information on the family of Henry Albert
ZANGS, born 4 June 1832 at "M. Glabach (Moenchen Gladbach)
Prussia Rhineland Germany". This is my great grandfather. I am
interested in finding out more about this family, Henry having
emigrated from Germany and settled at Ottumwa, Iowa. There he
married Pauline AUWERDA, a Dutch immigrant. Any help
appreciated. Slainte

Casper BORGSCHATZ born 1802 came with his son Heinrich born 12
October 1843, from
the Teutoberger Woods near Bielefeld in 1866 after his wife
Katrina TEBBE had died. They
settled in Hay Creek, Minnesota. The family was told that
BORGSCHATZ was not their
official name in Germany but GOEDEKE was, and relatives with that
name came to America
and settled near St. Louis, Missouri. The family was Lutheran.
Any information on any of
these names would be appreciated.
Webmaster's Note: There is a wealth of information (14
topics, 28 collections)
on microfilm about Bielefeld and its surrounding area available
from the Family History
Library (FHL) at Salt Lake City for viewing (on loan at a
reasonable fee) at your nearest
LDS Family History Center (FHC). First check the FHL Catalog
(FHLC) on CD-ROM or
microfiche. In particular look at the Ein- und Auswanderer
records for 1856-1874 on
microfilm #0957027, the 1841-1846 Census - microfilm #0582345,
and one of the three Protestant Church records. There you might
start with the
Evangelische Reformierte Kirche which apparently covered Kreis
(county) Bielefeld since your
ancestors were from outside of town. It is item #2 (under church
records) has 9 microfilms and
the churchbook is partially indexed on film #0582916. There are
also land and property
records, court records and dwelling records.
MULLOWNY, Joanne WIEGMANN
eMail address: magwell@castle.net
(Evangelical Lutheran)
I am looking for information on the WIEGMANN / EMME families from
Heimsen / Ilvese in Westfalen. My
great-grandfather Heinrich Diedrich Wilhelm WIEGMANN emigrated to
New York from there in 1897. His
wife (Sophie Lisette Karoline EMME) and five of their children
followed him in 1899 on the "S.S. Kaiser
Friedrich". From the LDS microfilms of the records of the
Evangelical Lutheran Church in Heimsen I have
obtained a partial "tree" that I am still working on. His date
of birth was 23 April 1857. His wife's date of
birth was 15 December 1852. He was a brickworker. His parents
were Diedrich Friedrich Conrad
WIEGMANN and Sophie Marie Dorothea Lousie HARTMANN. His wife's
parents were Johann Friedrich
Gottlieb EMME and Louise Friedrike Henriette HILLBRECHT. My
research in Heimsen / Ilvese goes up to
about 1900. I am looking to flesh out more about their lives in
Germany and hopefully connect with a
family member there who might also be interested in making
contact and exchanging information.
Thank you for your help.
Webmaster's Note: Your Emme family surname may lead you back
to the Emmental valley of
Switzerland where the Emme river and this surname is found.
Don't be surprised to find your Wiegmann
surname also spelled Wiechmann - most German surnames have
several transliterations - mine has over
50.

locating the birthdate

I am trying to gain any information on my great, great
grandfather, Frederick RUESING. He came from the
Paderborn area. He was born in 1834 or 1835. He emigrated to
St. Louis, Missouri in 1858. Any information
would be helpful. He was Catholic.
Webmaster's Note: Too bad his wife (if any), siblings or
children are not mentioned - thank greatly
diminishes the effectiveness of your entry. The "Paderborn area"
has many villages for you to search - see a
good atlas or gazetteer.
STOELTING, Charles
eMail address: cstoelti@cc-cci.net
Caspar Herman Heinrich NIERMEYER was born 23 October 1824 at
Blasheim, Westfalen Germany. In
October 1881 he emigrated to America with his wife Marie Sophie
POST Niermeyer, daughter-in-law Charlotte
Niermeyer and daughter Anna KLOSTERMANN. He settled in Nebraska,
but in 1891 he sold his land and
disappeared. Suspect he may have returned to Germany. Any way
of finding out?
Webmaster's Note: If he returned to Blasheim and died there
and was Lutheran, it is possible he will be
listed in the Evangelische churchbooks on FHL microfilm
(1661-1910). Further, it may be possible to spot his
parents and other ancestorsin those church records.
TAYLOR, Jeff
eMail address: sebec@kreative.net
(Protestant)
I am looking for information on ancestors of Johann REMM, born in
Büren (with an umlaut = Bueren),
Westphalen, circa 24 August 1858. He emigrated to the USA circa
1878 and settled in Nebraska, where he
married Mary MEIER (died 1888), with whom he had six children,
and then Elizabeth STOLTE (died 1947),
with whom he had one child (Aloys REMM). All the REMM ancestry I
have, back to Johann is Protestant, so
it is assumed his forebears in the fatherland were also. I will
be extremely grateful for information on brothers,
sisters, father, mother and ancestors.
Kate's Note: There are two locations named Buren in
Westphalia, fairly close to one another. There is
yet a third not too far in Hannover (HANRL). Jeff THINKS this
is too far out). He is not sure which of the
two in Westphalia is his location.
Webmaster's Note: None of the Bueren locations has any FHL
microfilm listings. Assuming Jeff has already
searched the IGI and Ancestral File at his local FHC, he might
want to try Die Ahnenstammkartei des
Deutschen Volkes, looking for a REMM
from Westphalia in it.
WESTFALL, Thomas
eMail address: TRUWRITER@aol.com
(Lutheran)
I am beginning a search of my ancestry and I know that my
grandfather, Everett WESTFALL and grandmother
Martha were part of the Westfall family that emigrated from
Germany to Buchanon, West Virginia and possibly
from Virginia and Maryland before that. The name was likely
spelled WESTPHAL when people came from
Germany. My mother's family, WEISKIRCHER, also turn of the
century coal miner immigrants to northern
West Virginia, indicate that Westfall spelling was changed to
make the name more American, as Westfalls were
very active in German politics during World War I. Ther
supposedly is a rich family history from Westphalia,
however, also many branches to search I am guessing.
