I have researched my Jewish ancestors from Zempelburg for 16
years. The
families: ISRAELSKI, GAPPE,
ZACHARONSKI, BLUHM, LESS and others. While the 1874 and later
standard
Prussian B-M-D registers are
available on LDS microfilm through Family History Centers, I have
never
located the specifically Jewish
records from 1847-1874, or other periods. The main lists
available are
name-adoptions for all of Westpreussen
(1812), and a census of the Jews of Westpreussen from 1810 which
does not
list many family names, only
patronymics. Does anyone know of the existence of Jewish Records
for
Zempelburg? Perhaps in some former
East German or Russian archive?

I am searching for information on my great-grandparents, Julius
PFEIFFER (born 1864), who listed his parents
as Johan KRASHEWSKI or KRAJEWSKI, and his wife Adelgunda (born
1863), nee GROSHINSKI. One
Pennsylvania census lists their place of birth as West Prussia,
another, as Germany. Their son, Arthur
PFEIFFER (my grandfather), was also born in West Prussia (1890).
They spoke German, and I believe they
were Lutherans. They emigrated in 1891 or 1892 to Schuylkill
County, Pennsylvania, USA.

I am seeking information regarding my GreatGrandfather August J.
DREGER he
was born 1836 (?), not sure
where, but lived in Danzig-Stadt as a youg adult. He was a
member of St.
Trinitatis Evangelical Church, my
grandfather Robert DREGER was baptized there in 1868. August
wife's name was
Albertine (nee SCHULTZ).
Family emigrated to Philadelphia USA sometime around 1873-74
period. August
DREGER died at Philadelphia
in 1911. I am looking for information about August parents as
well.
Webmaster's Note: Under the first of four listings for Danzig
in the FHL
Catalog there are 28 Topics.
Topic #6 is Church Records (66 collections). Records #42 and 43
at for the
"Trinitatiskirche" with
churchbooks spanning 1651-1867 (8 microfilms) and 1644-1919 (11
microfilms).
These can be ordered out on
rental for a few dollars from the FHL in Salt Lake City for
viewing at your
nearest Family History Center
(FHC).

My great great grandparents are a John Joseph WOYWODKA /
WOYWOTKA, fathers name John, born Danzig 3 February 1855.
Married a Rosemary DAZMER / DEZMER, parents Joseph DAZMER and
Catherine BASZECHOWSKI, born Danzig 29 March 1857. John Joseph
was to have served in the military there as a telegrapher, Rose
was to have been a nurse. I believe they were Catholic and
possibly came to the US around 1880. No records can be found
other than death certificates. I have yet to find their name
anywhere in the US or anywhere else for that matter. They had
several children, most born in Danzig. Any help or guidance
would be appreciated.
HIRSCHBERGER, Donald W.
1252 Singingwood Court, #3, Walnut Creek, California 94595-3227,
USA.
I am interested in finding information on my grandfather, Hans
HIRSCHBERGER
and his family. He was born
in Torun, Poland 9 December 1856. I know his father was Amand
Hirschberger
(died 1875) and his mother's
name was Julia. Armand was in the sheet metal business which
became my
father's trade. I think there were
two older and two younger siblings - that is all I know. What is
the
procedure to obtain more details regarding
the family before and after that time? Are there other sources
which I
should pursue? I would be grateful for
any help you can give me. I do not have access to eMail.
Webmaster's Note: Torun (Bydgoszcz) Poland is the name today.
But your
name is Germanic and your
inquiry refers to a period of 126 years prior to World War I when
Poland was
partitioned into three segments -
that city was called Thorne in the German Province of West
Prussia (on the
border with the province of Posen)
then. It is very important to know the religion of your father's
parents, as
that will determin where you look
for the vital records. There where at least four protestant
churches at
Thorn and at least one Catholic Church -
all have microfilm records available through the Concord-Walnut
Creek FHC. Most seem to cover the time period of your
interest.

I am searching on how I may get further information on my
ancestors with the surnames of BAHR and
MARTEN/MARTIN who emigrated to the USA about 1888 from "Zueger by
Schloppe", West Prussia. I know
where Schloppe is now located. What does Zueger mean? Nearby
village? Henriette Caroline MARTEN
BAHR, widow of August BAHR emigrated to the USA and eventually
to Wisconsin with August's brother,
Wilhelm BAHR about 1888. Henriette had three daughters, Emma who
stayed in Indiana, Lizzie who stayed in
Ohio and Minna BAHR that came to the United States with her. The
BAHRS were Lutheran. Any Lutheran
parishes near or in Schloppe? How do I find death record of
August BAHR? - I don't know when he died.
How do I obtain Henriette Caroline MARTEN BAHR's birth record? Or
Henriette and August BAHR's
marriage record? Is there a way to obtain land records or census
records for that area? Are there emigration
records? What town would they emigrate from and most likely to
where in the USA? Minna BAHR was my
grandmother and was born 25 February, 1874 at Schloppe. I do not
know the birth or death dates of her
parents, August and Henriette Caroline MARTEN BAHR. Thank
you.

I am searching for more information on my great grandparents.. My
great
grandfather was August Ludwig
DUMKE. He was born 2 April 1866 at Barkenfelde, county of
Marienwerier, in
Preussen"Prussia", which is
now eastern Germany. He was the son of Ludwig DUMKE, of
Barkenfelde and
Esteun Augusta GRURINIKI.
August left Germany 4 November 1893. He married Therese
Wilhelmine Albertine
SEEFELDT at Marinette
County, Wisconsin, on 11 August 1900. I am hoping to find more
information on
August, such as siblings and
his parents.

My grandmother, Pauline Wilhelmina WERNER, was born on 29 April
1864 at
Garnsee, Germany now
Gardeja, Poland. Her mother's maiden name was Anna GABELL and
her father's
name was given only as Mr.
WERNER. I learned this information from her marriage record. She
entered the
United States in 1880 through
New York City and remained there all of her life. She married my
grandfather, Philip DUSCH on 18
September 1887 at New York City, New York. From the census
records I learned
that she had a half-brother
Richard MILBRAD (MILBRODT) born circa 1870 in Germany and a half
sister Ida
MILBRAD, born circa
1872 in Germany. I do not know what Mr. MILBRAD's first name
was. She was
of the Lutheran faith. This
is all I know about these families.
Garnsee is located appoximately 25 kilometers north of Graudenz
and
approximately 30-35 kilometers south of
Marienwerder, in West Prussia. I have searched the IGI in our
local FHL but
to no avail. I have put
ads in the Genealogical Helper Magazine which produced nothing.
I have had
searches done by the Immigrant
Genealogical Society and they have found nothing. I have placed
the surnames
in the Genealogical Research
Directory and never heard anything. The surnames were placed in
numerous
other societies and on other lists
but I have never had any answers. I would like to find out more
about any /
all of these families.
Can you help me? I would appreciate any help or suggestions you
can give
me.

I am US Military stationed in Germany. I am trying to find
information
concerning my Great Grandparents on
my father's side. Julius ARTUER from Thorne, Germany and Helena
EINSPORN
from Province-Posen,
Germany. They were believed to be Roman Catholic. Julius'
occupation was a
(fresco) painter. Emigration
and marriage information is not available. The first record I
have is the
Birth Certificate of my grandmother's
brother. Edward Theodore Arteur. He was born on 14 September
1894 at
Chicago, Illinois. Street name of
residence was either Fremont or Plymoth in Willis ward.
According to his
birth certificate, he was Helena's
3rd born / living child. Gertrude Irene Arteur was born 04 July
1897 at
Clevland Ohio. She was baptized at
St. Mary's Church in Clevland about 10 October 1897. God-Parents
were Annie
WASSON and Frank
KOENIG.
Helena Einsporn Artuer then moved to the Buffalo New York area.
Sometime
prior to 1936, she remmaried a
Michael SCHULTZ. I believe my Uncle Ben Schultz was also born of
Helena, but
I have no proof. She lived
in Buffalo until her death 03 December 1949. She is interred at
Holy Cross
Cemetery, Buffalo, NY. I do not
speak German. But, as I live here on a temporary basis, I am
interested in
finding the Artuer/Einsporn birth
place. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Until now,
I have not
been able to locate either name.
Edward's birth certificate lists the information about Artuer /
Einsporn and
Germany. Thank you.
Webmaster's Note: Thorne is now called Torun, Poland and is
east
southeast of Bromberg, Posen (now
called Bydgoszcz, Poland. FHL microfilm exists for three
different Roman
Catholic churches there (St Jacob,
St. Johns and St. Marys), but the latest dates filmed are in the
mid
1870's.
As for the surnames, you have the added burden of the fact that
Artuer /
Artür / Artur is a common
given name as well as a more unique surname. FYI, two women with
the
Einsporn surname were married at
Breslau, Silesia in 1810 and 1811 according to Die
Eheschliessungen in den
Schlesischen
Provinzialblättern (1785-1849) - a book published in
1994 by Verlag
Degener of Neustadt an der
Aisch. While Breslau was a large city then, obtaining a
photocopy of the
obituary might indicate where they
lived and provide a clue as to which churchbook to search.
Since you are stationed in Germany, I suggest you take a few week
days days
of furlough time and spend it at
the Deutsche Zentralstelle für Genealogie at Leipzig. You
do not need
to know German to search card
files such as the mamoth Die
Ahnenstammkartei des Deutschen
Volkes. But searching this one large collection there might
take you a
couple days. The other archive of
primary interest to you would be the Bücherei des Deutschen
Ostens at
Herne, Westphalia. Searching the
catalog or card files at Herne should be no problem, looking for
your
surnames and the two placenames. It
might have useful information for you regarding your surnames at
Thorne and
Breslau. You will find the staff
and most of the other records searchers friendly and quite
helpful. You can
always photocopy text about your
family surnames for later translation.

I am seeking information on my family KRAUSE. I believe they
lived in and
around the Danzig / Zoppot area
of West Prussia. My great grandfather was John Joseph KRAUSE,
born 12
October 1862. He came to the
U.S. about 1882, settling in South Dakota. His obituary states
that he
served in "the German Military" at
age 18 for 2 1/2 years. He then learned "the tinner's trade"
before coming
to America. I have a death notice
for his father, Joseph KRAUSE. It says "The Pensioneer, Joseph
KRAUSE,
Recipient of the Royal Order of
the Crown." He was born about 1832 and died 26 October 1904 at
Zoppot. His
wife's name was Anna.
Another tombstone in the cemetery at Zoppot shows Pensioneer
Oskar KRAUSE, 31
Mar 1866 - 28 September
1926.
I believe the family was Roman Catholic. A family story suggests
that a
KRAUSE was a city official in Danzig
at some point. I would appreciate any information. Thanks.
Webmaster's Note: Can I assume you are aware of the
existence of civil
registration records for Zoppot
(1874-1883: 3 microfilm reels) and the Evangelical (Protestant)
churchbook
(1874-1883: 4 reels) and well as a
114 page history of that town in book form at the FHL? There are
also
several books at the FHL in Salt Lake
City that contain various lists of Danzig officials - see the
Danzig listing
in the FHL Catalog under topic #24 -
"Officials and employees". Unless you visit there you may need
help from a
genealogist living near Salt Lake
City to access the books - see the Professional Genealogist
Database

I am searching for family history on my great grandmother
Wilhelmine RAUSCHKE
born 12 October 1853 at Seefelde Wiecbork, Germany (possibly part
of
Pomerania/Prussia). She Married Herman SCHMIDT born May 1854.
They wed 7
November 1877 in Germany. They emigrated to the US the summer of
1882.
Their children were: Ida Malvine SHEPARD, born 21 September 1878
at Wiecbork
Germany, died 23 March 1950 at Baraboo, Wisconsin. Emil Julius,
born 25 May
1881 at Guntergost, Germany, died 11 June 1951 at Baraboo,
Wisconsin. Herman
August 1 August 1883 at Blue Earth, Wisconsin, death unknown;
Martha
Rosemary OTT, born 17 July 1886 at Blue Earth, Wisconsin; died 5
November
1954 at St. Croix Falls, Wisconsin; Lena Amelia KRUEGER RAMAUT,
born 14 June
1887 at St. Paul, Minnesota; died 27 May 1960 at Baraboo
Wisconsin; Charles
Henry, born 23 January 1892 at Renville Minnesota, died 19
November 1968 at
Baraboo Wisconsin; Henry Carl, born 23 October 1892 at Ennet,
Minnesota, died
23 September 1965 at Baraboo, Wisconsin; Alma Olga LOOMIS, born
23 October
1892 at Ennet, Minnesota, died 16 April 1968; and Mathilda Alvina
SUTTON,
born 14 September 1996 at Baraboo, Wisconsin; death unknown.
Family history has it that Wilhelmina Rauschke's family was a
member of the
Prussia nobility and that Herman Scmidt was a member of the
German Army and a
son of a Lutheran Minister. The places of birth shows the
family's moving
about until they settled in the Baraboo, Wisconsin. area.

I am looking for any information on my great grandfather,
Adalbert PLACZEK / PACIEK, or my great
grandmother, Mary WESTPHALL, his wife. They emigrated to
Galveston Texas in 1881 from Danzig. They
had one son Stanislaus (= Vincent) who was born in 1879. They
were Catholic. I have 2 records where the
last name was spelled PLACZEK or PACIEK, even though today it is
spelled differently (PACHECK). They
eventually moved to Berea Ohio in mid 1880's. My grandfather
Leon was born at Berea Ohio in 1893 and then
moved to Syracuse New York. Any help would be appreciated.

My great-great-grandfather Joseph HINTZ / HINZ was born around
1837, we believe at Muhlbank, Germany.
He married Maria PUNTOWSKI in 1860 at Dirschau, which I believe
is now known as Tzchev in Poland. In
1875 they boarded the ship "Lammershagen" with their young family
and emigrated to New Zealand. Joseph's
death certificate notes that this parents names were Anton and
Maria (no maiden name given for Maria) and that
Anton was a labourer. Where is Muhlbank in Germany? I cannot
find it. Also does
anybody link with these people. Thank you.
Webmaster's Note: Dirschau was in West Prussia; it is now
called Tczew, Poland. So is
Mühlbanz, which is probably the Muhlbank you are seeking.
It must have been very close by Dirschau.
Mühlbanz was first called Milobadz by Poland, but now is
also be called Tczew. Perhaps the two
villages were so close as to grow into one town. It is near
Gdansk, Poland. Microfilm of churchbooks and
other records for both villages exist at the FHL in Salt Lake
City. The FHL Catalog is available at your nearest
LDS FHC (Family History Center).

My great-grandfather Johann PRAHL, born 1857 along with his wife
Emilie ZESCH
Prahl, born 1867 (I also
have dated of 1859 and 1863), and son Karl, born 1883, emigrated
to the USA
from Hamburg 25 March 1885
on the ship "Gellert" arriving New York 15 April 1885. I just
looked at the
Hamburg passenger list and
learned their last residence was Petzin, West Prussia.
The PRAHLS came to Chicago where Johann died in 1894. Emilie
then married
Charles BRINGE, who died in
1915 and then married Theodore FREDERICKS, who died in 1920.
Emilie ZESCH,
PRAHL, BRINGE,
FREDERICKS died in 1931. They were members of St. Martini
Lutheran Church
in Chicago since their
arrival and all the children were baptized there, so I assume
they were
Lutheran in Germany. I'll be going to
the LDS FHC and would appreciate help on what to look for.
Webmaster's Note: According to my German-Polish name
directory for Alt
Petzin (Kreis Flatow),
Kreis Flatow was a kreis in West Prussia from 1878 until 1920 on
the western
border with Pommern. In the
mid 1930's it became part of Pommern until 1946 when it bcame
part of Poland.
I find no records for Alt
Petzin or Petzin in the latest CD-ROM fo the FHL Catalog (FHLC).
I suggest
you look for it in the microfiche
version of the FHLC which may be more recent. You might check
your german surnames in the surname search section of the FHLC.
Assuming no help has been found in the IGI or the Acestral File
at the FHC, then I suggest you consider searching Die Ahnenstammkartei des
Deutschen Volkes. for Prahl and Zesch.
From Claire Rozbesky: Just thought I would let you know how your
help helped me. In answer to my 6 April 1998 posting to WPRURL,
you told me to check the IGI at LDS. I couldn't believe it but
Johann Prahl and his siblings birth records were "extracted" for
Krojanke, West Prussia and there they were on the computer. I
was able to obtain the microfilms and research back to early
1800's for his family. Unfortunately, the Zech family does not
show up there and I am still looking for her. (Plus the films
were not late enough to include their marriage around 1882.) A
SUPER THANK-YOU for the advice.

(13 February 19998) I am trying to find information about
Nicolaus SCHLAGE or SZLAGER, who was born 5 December 1791, I
believe somewhere near Roggenhausen, near Graudenz, West Prussia
(currently Rogozno, near Grudziadz, Poland). He died 5 December
1867 at Garnsee, West Prussia (currently Lake Gardeja, Poland).
He had three different wives at different times; 1) Gertrude
ROSNER, 2) Eva FELBERG or FELBEROWA (born approximately 1791 in
an unknown location and died 22 April 1842 at Roggenhausen, West
Prussia); and, 3) Matilda FUCHS.
I am trying to get the birth date, and location of birth, and
the names of the parents of Eva FELBERG (or FELBEROWA). I am
trying to get the birth place and the names of the parents of
Nicolaus SCHLAGE. By the way, I was thrilled to find this
location on the internet. Thanks so much! What a service!
(8 March 1999): I am no longer looking for the parents of
Nicolaus SCHLAGE as I have located them. I am now looking for
the birthplace of Johann Gorttlieb SCHLAGE, who was born in the
year 1771 approximately. He was in the Obr von Besser regiment
in 1796, and was located in Graudenz, West Preussen at that time.
I can find no record of his birth. His wife's name was Anna
NEUBANOWNA, whose birthplace I am also seeking. She was born in
approximately 1767. Anyone out there who ties into this
line?

My great-great-grandfather, Julius Leopolt STREHLKE (1837-1904),
emigrated to
the US in the early 1860's.
He was born in the town of Gross Palubin (aka Polobeen, Pallbain)
in Kreis
Berent in West Prussia (WPRU)
and was the son of Christian STREHLKE. Julius was one of seven
children and
served in the Prussian
military. Christian died at the age of 62. Is there a way to
get the
military record of Julius? Does anyone
have information about these folks? I noticed on an old map that
next to
Gross Palubin was a tiny village called
"Strehlkau". Does anyone have knowledge about this place?
Webmaster's Note: German military informatiom will be the
subject of an
upcoming article in the German Genealogical
Digest by
Lorraine Ferguson. The
short answer is you need to know the unit identifcation to search
most
military records. There are two
collections of West Prussian military records for the
Marienwerder district
near Gdansk on FHL
microfilm.
