IAQ Question (From Bob E.): Re the Ahnenstammkartei reference text, you
state: "Because of the extensive length of the computer CD-ROM summary, the Register to
the Ahnenstammkartei Des Deutschen Volkes is being published as a reference text."
Answer: "Yes. It is a detailed directory of all the microfilm reels. But it is not an
everyname index, which could easily exceed 20,000 pages. This register is a virtual
pre-requisite to being able to effectively use this massive pedigree collection."
IAQ Question: How do I order it? And does this "reference text" include the
explanations necessary to convert one's name into the "Soundex-like" version, and other
explanatory information otherwise found on FHL microfilm found in the English-language
"introduction"?
Answer: While the full summary of all 1,221 reels is extensive on the FHLC
CD ROM, the Germanic Soundex-like conversion is on the first part of the first reel. Thus
you don't really have to buy the book if you have reasonable access to the computer or fiche
version of the FHLC at your nearby FHC and only have a surname or two to search for.
However to use the Ahnenstammkartei collection extensively, it is very useful to have Tom
Edlund's book available.
Since writing the article however, the Germanic Genealogy
Society, has published this register. So I suggest you contact the GGS.
