Latest Update: 20 April 1998 (New eMail address)
Slovak and Czech Archives
by Duncan Gardiner, C.G., A.G.
eMail message to FEEFHS from Duncan Gardiner, C.G.: "Here is an
updated archive address list. I have also added the Czech Embassy website address and an address
where the form to make genealogical search requests to the Slovak archive administration can
be obtained. I am sorry we cannot include diacritical marks on these addresses as posted on
the Internet web at this time."
The Slovak and Czech archive systems do ancestry research for those who inquire by mail.
They have a great
deal of experience and are good at it, by and large. The charges are not cheap any more, but
they are not
excessive. The inquiries used to be handled by the Czechoslovak Embassy, but this is no
longer the case, both
because the two countries are separate and because the procedure has changed. However,
you
might want to
write to the Czech or Slovak Embassy for information about the archive services.
- Embassy of the Slovak Republic, 2201 Wisconsin Avenue N.W., Suite 250,
Washington,
D.C. 20007. There was no eMail address as of 22 July 1996, but you can access the forms
requesting genealogical research by accessing the internet address http://www.iarelative.com/embassy.htm.
The instructions give the address at Krizkova 7 - shown below - to which
the form is
to be returned.
- Embassy of the Czech Republic, 3900 Spring of Freedom St. NW, Washington, D.C.
20008. Their e-mail
address is 72360.544@compuserve.com.
(The
Czech Embassy has a website at http://www.czech.cz/washington. The
main menu there
does not list anything specifically related to genealogical research.)
If you want to write directly to the archive service in each country:
- For Czech research: Archivni Sprava, Milady Horakove 133, 166 21 Praha 6, Czech
Republic
- For Slovak research: Archivna Sprava, Krizkova 7, 811 04 Bratislava,
Slovakia
If you are at all doubtful about which archive will have the parish registers for the ancestral
town in question,
you should write to the archive administration in Prague or in Bratislava and they will make
sure the appropriate
archive handles the request. In case you do know which archive can help you, the list of
addresses and telephone
numbers is given below.
Both archive systems are used to mail inquiries and have someone who can deal with
inquiries in English. But
make it easy: Write in clear, short sentences and make clear requests.

County and Special Archives; There is a county archive system as well. The 35
county archives
(okresne archivy) are not as well funded and many materials have not been catalogued.

the
Comenius
University Archive in Bratislava, the Archive of Matica Slovenska in Martin, the Mining
Archive in Banska
