From Evan Eichler
To Sarah Feroe:
eMail address: Pferoe@aol.com
I searched the church records for the names you mentioned and found the following: Only one
Michael WALDNER was found, who would be the correct age for your ggg-grandfather. Michael
Waldner b. 1847 Feb. 14 (nicknamed Maezel Michael) was born to Mathias Waldner (born 9 March
1819) and Anna TSCHETTER (born 3 March 1822). Fred is not a common name among Hutterites.
There was a Friederich Waldner, however, born 20 February 1811 who married a Barbara WALTER
(born 22 Oct 1807). They had several chidren (one of which was a Fred Waldner born 22 March
1836, died 12 December 1911). Your gg-grandfather is likely a grandson of Friedrich Waldner (born
1811).
The Pullman connection sounds plausible. Certainly the Joseph Pullman born 1854 may have been
the father of your g-grandfather Andy Pullman. This Joseph, however, was not born in Russia not
Germany (It is possible because he spoke German, that the family assumed he came directly from
Germany). I should point out, however, that the Pullman name does exist outside of the Hutterites in
Germany. Therefore, don't exclude the possibility that Andy may be descended from a non-Hutterite
lineage. (Is it possible that Joseph's wife's name was Sarah WIPF?)
I'm sorry that all of this data is still circumstantial. I am receiving more church records in about two
weeks from South Dakota regarding the Schmiedeleut Hutterites. The majority of the Waldners
belonged to the Schmiedeleut, so it is likely that the Waldner connections, at least, can be verified at
that time. Regards, Evan Eichler
From Sarah to Evan:
I wrote to you last week regarding my great-grandparents and their surnames (Mary Waldner
Pullman, and Andy Pullman). I was able to find out some information some of our relatives had.
Mary Waldners' parents were Mary and Fred Waldner (we believe that Mary's maiden name was
Waldner also). The first Mary Waldners' father was Mike, or Micheal, something along that line.
We don't know who Freds' parents were or who Mikes' wife was.
Andy Pullmans' parents were Joseph Pullman and Sarah WYDE (or WYPE). Joseph Pullman was
born in Germany. His parents were Joseph and Tina or Vistina or something like that we don't know
for sure. I think that it might be Justina Hofer who came here with her family in 1879, but I don't
know for sure. I hope that this information was not to confusing and will help us make a connection.
Thank you for your time and effort.
[Evan's response not available]
Thank you for responding to my letter so quickly. Mary Waldner was born in 1903, and Andy
Pullman was born in 1897. From what my grandmother (Mary and Andy's daughter) tells me John
Waldner (Marys' father) refused to move on to Canada with the colony. I hope that this information
will help us make a connection. My uncle (Mary and Andys') son, supposedly has some information
that might help us make a connection as well. I hope to get it by the end of the week.
