I am a Family Visitor from Community Action Region VI, teaching homebased headstart to children on a Hutterite colony in North Dakota. I am looking for childrens books that deal with Hutterite heritage and culture either in English or in German. I would love to know where to look as I keep running into dead ends. Thanks.

BERGMANN, Jake

I recently became interested in my Hutterite heritage on my mother's side. She was Annie KLEINSASSER. Her father was Andrew KLEINSASSER who died approximately 1916. We also know that Andrew KLEINSASSER's mother was an Annie KLEINSASSER who is buried in a small 12 foot by 12 foot plot of land in the middle of a farmer's field currently owned by a John KLEINSASSER near Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. We also understand that the KLEINSASSER family emigrated from the United States circa 1900 but have no information on their history in the U.S. I would greatly appreciate it if anyone with information on the KLEINSASSER family, particularly in the late 1800's and early 1900's could contact me.

While doing research on my great-grandmother Mary WALDNER PULLMAN for a school project I discovered that not only was Waldner a surname, but Pullman was as well. (My grear-grandfather Andy Pullman married Mary Waldner in South Dakota). When I first read the Hutterite Genealogy Home Page my mother and I were surprised at how it coincided with what little we knew about my great-grandmother living in a German colony.

I spent all afternoon seaching for the book extractions the page mentioned. Finally, I stumbled on, Hutterite Genealogy Surnames of Founding Families Churchbook Extractions. I was somewhat surprised to see Waldner in the page, but shocked to see Pullman. While this information has helped me greatly I still need some more facts, such as the location of the colony. I would appreciate any refrences or more information about the two families you can give. Thank you for your time and the help you have already given.

Searching for WALDNER, PULLMAN, TSCHETTER, WALTER, WYDE /WYPE, WIPF?

In the book "Church Records of the Old Flemish or Groningen Mennonisten Societat in Przechowko, West Prussia" two of my direct line ancestors are recorded as having come from Moravia. (Peter?) SCHMIDT, a master or chief Smith came from Hungary together with Tobias SCHELLERBERGER, also a good smith, who had previously fled Moravia in 1634. These two are supposed to have been Moravian Brethren. Another direct line ancestor, Jacob THOMAS (or THOMSEN or THOMAS) also fled Moravia at about the same time.

In "The Hutterian Chronicle", I found a record of a Peter Schmidt, a master blacksmith who was tortured and killed at Pribitz, Hungary by imperial Polish Troops 28 Jul 1620. I beleive this man to be either father or grandfather of my earliest Schmidt. (All Schmidts in the Przechowko group are descended from this Schmidt, not to mention the ones in surrounding communities that also descend from him.) I would like to establish a surer connection between the two lines of Schmidts. In going through "The Hutterian Chronicle", I found records of many Schmidts, at last a Baker's dozen of them. "The Hutterian Chronicle" deals primarily with church leaders and heros, some of which may not have been Hutterites. For instance, My direct line ancestor, Heinrich BULLER who migrated from Switzerland in 1602 to Przechowko vic. returned in 1614 to bring the entire congregation to Poland. In the process, He was captured and held in prison for several months. This last item appears in "The Hutterian Chronicle". All the way through, family connections are not mentioned.

The question I have is 'Are at least some of these Schmidts related by physical family ties, such as son or grandson, etc.?' Notice the following coincidence: The earliest Schmidt in "The Hutterian Chronicle" is named Casper Klaindopf Schmidt, the earliest Schmidt with a given name in "Church Records . . . Przechowko, West Prussia" is also named Kasper Schmidt. You can see why I might reach the conclusion that one was the ancestor of the other, although they are 150 years apart. Are they really related?

I found an interesting listing that included Hutterite names - http://www.infobahn.mb.ca/mmhs/school62.htm... the "1862 School Registry for Molotschna". This source ... includes school registries for the villages Huttertal and Johannesruh both of which were entirely composed of Hutterite settlers with such last names as Stahl, Hofer, Wipf, Decker etc. The list consists of Fathers names, childrens names and ages that were attending at the end of the school year.

It was interesting to look at Evan's work and to find out more of where my surname comes from. I left a colony in Alberta Canada in 1975. About 7 years ago I was visiting South Dakota to see where my Gparents lived. Thanks for your work.

I was born at Huron South Dakota. I now live in Arizona. I am a pastor of a church. How do I trace my roots back to Austria? Someday I plan to go back there I see where there is a Hofer Hotel in Austria

KLEINSASSER, Lydia Ruth
North Dakota
eMail address: lydiark@restel.net

I am trying to trace my family tree. I am the daughter of Sam A. Kleinsasser of Chaseley, North Dakota. My Grandparents were Andrew John Marie Kleinsasser and Lydia (WOLLMAN) Kleinsasser. I have been told that our family originally belonged to a colony around Redfield, South Dakota. The mother of my grandfather, Andrew John Marie KLEINSASSER was Anna WIPF Kleinsasser, who emigrated with her parents, Zacharias and Marie WIPF on the ship "Hammonia". Anna WIPF Kleinsasser was 8 at the time and I think her father was Passenger #423 and Anna was Passenger #428. My grandfather's father, Joh Kleinsasser, emigrated when he was 14 with his brother Andr Kleinsasser and wife, Marie WIPF Kleinsasser. I believe they were passengers on the ship "Pommerania". Joh Kleinsasser may have been Passenger #276 and Andr, his brother, Passenger #273.

I know very little of my Grandmother, Lydia WOLLMAN Kleinsasser's family besides the fact that her mother's name was Anna WIPF Wollman, daughter of David and Catherine STAHL Wipf and I think they emigrated on the ship "Mosel". My Grandmother's father was named Paul WOLLMAN. I have always been interested in finding out where exactly my ancestors came from. Any help in tracing my family tree and finding other relatives would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Webmaster's Note: Your Kleinsasser and Wipf surnames are mainline Hutterite names and there are a number of Hutteritte colonies in North Dakota, some of which are listed on this web site. A telephone call to one of them will reveal to you thelocation of the nearest Kleinsasser and Wipf family genealogist. I am sure a visit to one of their colonies would be a fascinating experience for you.

Considerable information on Hutterites is posted on this web site - the only place we know of for online Hutterite genealogy. Open http://feefhs.org, got/clickon the web portal index, type in your surnames one by one, clickon search and explore the hypertext links. There are 10 listings for Kleinsasser stuff and 16 listings for Wipf.

Type Hutterite into the web portal index to check out our extensive collection of Hutterite stuff. We also have posted a number of Hutterite maps of the European locations where they lived. Type Hutterite Map into our Web Portal Index for several dozen hypertext links. You may wish to purchase a copy of the "The Hutterian Chronicle" book which is the source of our maps.

I am descended from Gottlieb Stahl, born 09 April 1817 and died 12 April 1902 in Huntington County, Indiana. I am interested in corresponding with other STAHL researchers in this area.

PETTREY, Danielle (Dani) KLEINSASSER
eMail address: daniday@prodigy.net

I am interested in finding out more about my ancestral background. My great-grandmother's maiden name was Katherine KLEINSASSER, born May 1898 in Hutchinson county, South Dakota. Her brother Jacob KLEINSASSER, was born 7 June 1891 in Hutchinson county, South Dakota. Other siblings were Paul, Susie, Lizzy, Annie, Rachel, Joseph, and John. Moved from Freeman, SD to Bowdon, ND in 1889. I believe their parents names were Paul Kleinsasser and Marie or Mary FAST. They moved from Freeman, South Dakota to Bowdon, North Dakota in 1889. It is thought that they were original German and possibly lived in Russia for a time (Ukraine). I am very interested in finding out if they were or the ancestors were part of the Hutterite families originally. I am looking for confirmation and any sources available about their family background. Any information or guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I am looking for informaation on Belle Plaine colony and update list of Canadian colonies. I am doing research on Hutterite colonies on the Canadian prairies. Does anyone have relatives on the Belle Plaine colony? I am also looking for an updated list of Canadian colonies. If anyone knows if Sam Hofer, author of Hutterite cookbooks, I'd appreciate. Thank you for your help.

SOMMERFELD, Grant
eMail address: ges@planet.eon.net

Dear Dr. Eichler: I am one of the people in the Canadian prairies who was surprised to learn of the existence of a Hutterite branch in my family tree. Within the last three months I have begun to explore it further but have been largely unsure of where to turn. I am truly grateful to have access to the information you have provided to the FEEFHS and hope you do not mind if I contact you with the odd question. My own information goes back to around 1750 and comes from a Hutterite woman in Montana who answered an inquiry I placed in the "Mennonite Historian"

I am studying history at the University of Innsbruck, Austria and I am starting this year my thesis about the Hutterites in the 16th and 17th century. I am writing about the letters of the Hutterian Brethren. With great interest I read about your project to collect the family names and to make some research about the history of the Canadian Hutterites. Unfortunately I couldn't get to some websites, so I am writing to you. Can you give me some more information about your project, why you are doing this work and what you intend with your work?

And this is my request: For my thesis I am looking for letters from the Hutterites from the 16th and 17th century. I got to know that on the Bruderhoefe in Canada there are many letters which have never been edited. Do you know anything about the archives of the Bruderhoefe? Parallel (letter sent) to Rev. John Hofer some time ago and I am now waiting for the answer. But perhaps you could help me, too.

WALDNER, Tony
c/o Forest River Bookbindery, 4068 35th Avenue, Fordville, North Dakota 58231-9525

Webmaster's Note I was first in touch with Tony Waldner of the Forest River Colony in January 1997. He is the author of "Russia Record" mentioned in the Hutterite Genealogy Initiative. As a Hutterite colony member, he does not have access to the Internet. When he was advised of the existence of this Hutterite Research List and he asked that a message like this be posted for him on the following subject:

"I am an author living in a Hutterite colony. I am seeking antique (old) photographs of Hutterites and of Hutterite colonies in Russia and America. Please send them to me at my address above. Thank you."

WALTER, Ivy Dawn
eMail address: dreamcatchercafe@netzero.net

My father is Lorenz Paul WALTER. He left his colony at Cardston, Alberta in 1965. Apparently it was a mixed colony with members of the HOFER and WALTERS faaaamilies and they did not get along (or so I've been told) so they made the split and the sister colony moved to southwestern Saskatchewan. The new colony became known as West Bench Colony near Eastend, Saskatchewan. My grandparents were named Sarah TSCHETTER WALTER and Paul WALTER. I was blessed to know them both very well. My grandfather passed away in 1976 and my grandmother passed away in 1999. I know they were both born in South Dakota but I'm not too sure where and I do not know the names of their parents who I assume were born in the old country. My grandparents had approximately 13 children. At least 2 had died at an early age. Back in the 1980's the colony got too big and they had to split again. The new sister colony was moved to Biggar, Saskatchewan. I'm not sure if this is true but I have been led to believe that my grandmother had a bible that contained the names of all the new children that are born, past and present. It never really meant anything to me because it was written in German but if that's the case then I believe that so much more could be learned from these books. And I do believe that it gets passed down from generation to generation. I just remember there being a bunch of hubbuck over the years because me and my sisters names weren't in it because my dad left the colony and married an "outsider". I'm proud of my Hutterite heritage and I go and visit my family at the colony whenever I can which isn't as often as I like but the next time I go I'll be sure to ask more questions.
