Map size: These oversize (9" by 12 1/2" per page were
usually printed by the publishers of the Harmsworth Atlas and
Gazetteer book as a double page - 18" by 12 1/2" in size).
As such they are too large for the typical PC scanner that has a
8 1/2" by 14" scanner surface (as used by home offices and
Kinkos.
Scanning Method: These maps were scanned using a Colortrac
380 Gx scanner (39 inch wide platen). They were then converted
to a JPEG digital image using Adobe Photoshop 5.5 software by
Monson Engineering, Inc., a reprographics and scanning services
firm at Salt Lake City, Utah.
Commercial Scanner Options at Monson: For large full
color scans, a Colortrac 380 Gx scanner at Monson was used
for these map scans. It is capable of scanning document images
up to 39 inches wide by 40 feet long. It is often used to
reproduce USGS topographic maps in full color and to deal with
full color architectural renderings of proposed buildings,
layouts and assorted other full color graphics.
For black and white scans, Monson currently uses a Vidar
Truscan scanner with a 36" wide platen and a 69 foot long image.
It is normally used to reproduce large architectual and
engineering drawings and graphic banners.
Problems in Printing FEEFHS Maps: These oversize color
maps CANNOT be printed out by your home printer. You most likely
to have insufficient printer RAM to print out even a small 150K
black a white map with many less pixels. To print them, you will
need to seek out a commercial reprographics service or commercial
graphic printer which have the industrial strength equipment to
do the whole job.
Webmaster's Suggestion: IMHO, if you intend to print out
any of these Harmsworth Atlas maps you should:
- Locate and contact a selected commercial digital printer or
reprographics services supplier to determine the digital transfer
media they work in.
- For small stuff (8 1/2" by 11" or smaller) in the U. S. you
can use AlphaGraphics, one of the better Kinko franchises or a
commercial printer with digital graphics capability.
- For oversize stuff (larger in one dimension than 8 1/2" by
11", like these Harmsworth maps), seek out an engineering
services firm offering reprographics services (I use Monson
Engineering at Salt Lake City, Utah, USA) or find a good
commercial digital printer.
- Determine the compatable digital media options available -
i.e. what form of digital storage do they work in and will they
accept and return? For example, Monson is only able to deal with
1.4 Meg diskettes, ZIP drive disks and CD-ROMs (no JAZZ or other
high density media accepted here).
- Download the high resolution (300 dpi) map version (from a
150dpi web page) to a ZIP, JAZZ or burn a CD-ROM (most 300 dpi
[and some 150 dpi] digital maps are too large for a 1.4 Meg
diskette) that is compatable with your reprographics or
commercial digital printer firm.
- Take it to your local reprographics or commercial digital
printer and have them print it out for you. Only a commercial
digital printer can provide the needed full color printout due in
part to the large amount of printer RAM required. See Printing Maps for
more related Q & A.
