Background: He is a native of Lincoln, Nebraska, and has lived in California, Utah, and Ohio. He earned a doctoral degree from The Ohio State University, after studying a combination of second language acquisition and German language history. He is an A.G. (Accedited Genealogist) with Austrian and German specialties. He has lived more than four years in Germany and Austria and conducts research in Europe annually. He has more than thirty publications in Germany pedagogy and family history research, and joined the staff of the German Genealogical Digest as associate editor in early 1998. As a conference speaker for FEEFHS and other organizations, his favorite topics include the relation of German phonetics to the spelling of surnames; locating church and civil records sources; and communicating with persons and agencies in Europe for family history purposes.
