ALBU, Julie
eMail Address: MAldish@aol.com

My father's name was Daniel ALDISH and he was born 8 October 1882 at Voevodenie Mici, Romania. This small mountain town was near Bala Mare (by the sea) in the Casscaion Mountains. He arrived in New York in 1901 from Bremen, Germany on the "Friedrich der Grosse" vessel. His surname may have been changed - possibly from ALDESKI, OLDES or ALDEA ? His father's name was John and his mother's, Mary. A brother, John was born at Foyorc, Austria-Hungry on 15 April 1888. He came to America and than returned home. He also had a brother Zebediah that had moved to Bucharest and may have been a lawyer. He also spoke of a sister, Mary. Would there be any way where we could get information from any of the areas I have mentioned? I had received a note from the Office of Vital Statistics, that I had requested but records were destroyed. Now I'm hoping to find areas with simular names. We would appreciate any help. Thank you

ANTON, Ion
C & S & A Agency
eMail address: Csa@xnet.ro

tel/fax : +4012404386

I am the manager of a private investigation agency in Bucharest, Romania. I was impressed by the messages posted at RORL. I would like to help people who are looking for their ancestors. Even if I cannot build the whole genealogical tree for an individual, I can try to help, free of charge, some people who want to find out if they have any relatives alive in Romania. The source area of some family names can be traced also for free. Urari de bine si sanatate tuturor celor care nu au uitat tara stramosilor.

AZAMBUJA, Alan Verissimo
eMail Address: alanazambuja@ig.com.br

(Greek Orthodox)

My mother, Doina STURZA, was born in Transylvania, Romania 11 February 1923, the youngest of seven children and the only daughter of Alexander STURZA, born in Hungary, and his Romanian wife, Maria. During World War WII, Doina was taken prisoner and spent two years in a concentration camp. When the war was over, she learned that she was the sole survivor of her family and she went to live in Brussels in Belgium. She received a new set of documents, and with them a new identity. She was now Marion MITTERLING, born at Arad on 26 June 1923. According to this document, she was the daughter of Alfred MITTERLING, dead at Camp Nordhausen and Maria CSIKGENOFOLVI GYENGE, dead at Camp Loodsdorf. These documents belonged to another young woman, who died during the war. After the war, my mother, Doina, was in Velden (Austria) where she met my father Raphael Veríssimo AZAMBUJA, a Brazilian in charge of a diplomatic mission for the selection of immigrants to Brazil after the war. Born at Brussels, Belgium, my name was Alain Pierre MITTERLING, according to my Belgium birth certificate. When my father's work was over in Europe, we all returned to Brazil. I was two years old and was registered in Brazil by my father, as if I had been born in Brazil in 1950. My name became Alan Verissimo AZAMBUJA, the name I have always used. It is very important for me to find out any possible information about my grandparents, my uncles and any birth certificates with complete names, especially of my mother.

BALDWIN, Glen S.
eMail address: MgPerilane@aol.com

My grandmother's maiden name was Margarita SZEIBERT and her family lived at Temesvar (Timisoara) until the start of World War II. My grandmother had two brothers - Adam and Joseph. She lost contact with them when World War II started. She was a Roman Catholic but married my grandfather (Nicolai DIMITRIEVICIE) who was either a Russian or Greek Orthodox Catholic in a civil ceremony on New Years Eve 1899. She left Europe in 1911 when she was 31 years old to immigrate to America and settle at New York City. My grandfather, Nicolai DIMITRIEVICIE was a member of the Austrian-Hungarian Army at the time he married my grandmother in 1899. He had three brothers Michael, George and Joseph. All immigrated to the USA in the early 1900s. The pictures I have of my grandfather when he was in the Army, indicate he had the rank of a corporal in the Army. My mother tells me he was a member of the Hussars and also of a palace guard detail. Where might that have been? Would like to know if there are records of the Army back that far which I might be able to search. He was also a police detective and a train conductor after leaving the Army. Would there be records of this employment in Timisoara? Thank you kindly for attention to this message.
Webmaster's Note: FYI, your granmother was from a Germanic name that indicates, based on the location, that she was from a Banater family. She appears to have married an ethnic Roumanian.

BALOG, John
eMail Address: johnbalog@anaresdes.com

I am looking for information about John (Jonas) and Vronika BALOG who were from the village of Bukova, Transylvania, just west of the present day city of Petrosani in Romania. They were born in that area around 1870, and had six children. John may have had a brother Anton, from the same village. They immigrated to America, travelling to Wisconsin in the late 1890s, and then John and part of the family returned to Bukova after Vronika died in Wisconsin in 1910. Any information would help. Thanks.

BOWMAN, Judi

Dochia MATEIU AVRAN was born at Bucuresti 12 February 1891. Her younger sister was Marie MATEIU AVRAN born at Leslea Mare 29 November 1894. Their brother was Alexander Niculae AVRAN. All were children of Niculae AVRAN (AVIAM) and Crucita MATEIU.

CEANGA, Leslie
eMail address: batevill@bcn.net

I seek info on Pantalamon ("Peter") CEANGA, born in Romania 15 July 1874 and Catherine STOIKA, born in Romania 28 August 1883. They met on the ship that came to Prince Edward Island, Canada between 1901 and 1904. Catherine already had a daughter "out of wedlock", who was born in 1900 in Romania, named Mary STOIKA. I don't know when Pantalamon and Catherine married but their first child was born in 1904 as they made their way across Canada to eventually settle in Michigan. They probably settled in Oakdale county, Michigan. My understanding is that they worked other people's dairy farms for them and moved many times. Pantalamon died 2 October 1953 and Catherine died 4 April 1962.

CLACKUM, Naomi HERSH
Florida, USA
eMail address:

Isaac HERSHKOWITZ, originally from Poland but relocated to Rumania as a young boy, met and married Yetta UNGER from Braila, Rumania in 1901. They left for NY in 1902 to immigrate to America. I can find no record of them coming through Ellis Island, but I know they did. I seek any information on Isaac and/or Yetta. Supposedly Yetta's was disowned when she married a Communist Count.

CORSATEA METZ, Jacqueline
P.O. Box 154, Bowling Green, Ohio 43402-0154, USA
eMail Address: jcmetz@wcnet.org

(Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox)

I am researching Thomas and Magdalena CORSATEA from the Fagaras area. Thomas was born 24 April 1889, and he had brothers, George and Gabriel. They all immigrated to America, settled at Warren, Ohio, and were raised Romanian Catholic. Magdalena M. CORSATEA was born November 18, 1895. I am also researching Gheorghe RADU who was born at Garbova, Alba-Julia, 6 May 1891 and died 2 January 939 at Bazetta, Ohio. Gheorge's siblings were Ioan, Maria, Maisa, Constantine, and Eli. He married my grandmother, Anna CARPINISIAN, also from Garbova, who was born 8 March 1902 (Eastern Orthodox). Her siblings (that I know of) were Maria, Parasheiva, and Victoria.

FEICA, Steve
Waterbury, Connecticut, USA
eMail Address: Sfeica@aol.com

(Eastern Orthodox)

I am looking for descendants and/or relatives of Dumitru "Mitro" and Anna FEICA, Eastern Orthodox faith, who emigrated from Boian, Bucovina, Romania in the spring of 1899. They settled at Boian, Alberta, Canada along with several other families who had emigrated from the village to Canada at the same time. I believe that at least one brother of Mitro FEICA also came to Alberta at the same time. Mitro, my grandfather, received a Dominion Land Grant in Alberta in 1907 and another one at Kayville, Saskatchewan in 1917. The family was large. My father was the youngest of 15-17 children.

FOWLER, Linda E.
eMail address: lef48@worldnet.att.net

My grandparents were from Perjamos, Hungary. My grandfather was Ferencz ESS, a shoemaker from Perjamos, Hungary. His uncle, Franz ESS, also lived in Perjamos. Ferencz was born around 1887, immigrated to America and settled at Cincinnati in July of 1907. He died in 1960. My Grandmother was Elizabeth SHISLER (SCHISSLER, SCHUESSLER); she was a nanny for a doctor in Europe and he sponsored her to travel to America. She was one of 11 children from Perjamos, Hungary. She was born somewhere around 1885 and died in 1952. She immigrated to America sometime between 1906 to 1910, and settled in Cincinnati. She was to meet her sister, Anna, in Cincinnati. Anna married a man named DRYER (DREIER) of Cincinnati.

FUSHAN, Roberto
Argentina
eMail address: roberto50@sinectis.com.ar

My ancestors Roberto and Leon FUKSHANSKY (FUKCHAMSKY) changed their last name to FUSHAN. They came from Forshan or Focsani or Fokshani, Rumania or from Tulchin or Talchin, Russia. Roberto and Leon immigrated to Argentina, arriving in Argentina in 1888, to escape Russian Czar Nicholas II. They had other siblings, Abraham and Marcus who resided in USA, and a brother Jacob in Belgium. To further my genealogy study, I am interested in connecting with anyone who may be related to this family.

GRUBER, Frank
eMail address: fjg24@yahoo.com

I am searching for information on the GRUBER and PASTOR surnames. Friedrich GRUBER was born 6 October 1850 at Neupanat, Hungary (now Horia Romania) and died in 1941. Friedrich married Theresia PASTOR; she was born 22 May 1846 at Glogowatz. Supposedly they had several children but I know only of Anna Gruber, born 1877 at Neupanat Hungary; Martin Gruber, born 1879; and Friedrich Gruber, born 1881.

HUBBARD, Claudia
eMail Address: claudiahu2001@yahoo.com

My ancestor Justina PITSUI and husband Alex NIMIGEAN (NIMIJEAN) had a daughter, Domnica NIMIGEAN, born about 1910, who married Gerizim TODERIUK. The NIMIGEAN's moved to Quebec, Canada in the 1920's. They may have been from one of these Romanian cities: Bukovina, Terreblachia, or Bucharesti.

JUMATATE, Mircea

English Translation: My mother's father, Gheorghe JUMATATE was originally from the city Rosiori de Vede, I believe. He lived at Bucharest after he got married, and he died in 1944 at the age of 52. He had 3 children: my mother, Georgeta (my mother), Dumitra and Gheorghe. I'll try to get more information from my mother. For now this is all I have.

KONEFAL, Margaret
eMail address: Margaret.Konefal@odin.cciw.ca

I am researching the HERRGESELL family. My grandfather RUDOLF HERRGESELL, born about 1880, was from Braszow (now Romania, but before the war, Hungary). My father Antoni HERRGESELL was born in 1912. His sister's name was Emma. Between the two World Wars they lived at Budapest. My grandfather remarried and had two other children, a son and a daughter. After WW II nobody was able to locate my grandfather. Can anyone help me?

Her father and grandfather were Chasid. She came from a long line of Rabbis. She went into the concentration camps at age 18. She was with a Clara LEVY (married name KESSLER) during most of the 6 years in the camps. My mother had 6 brothers and 1 sister. She was the youngest. The only brother's name I know is Myer. I know we currently have family at Netanyia, Israel. Any information would be appreciated.

MELLOWAY, Terri ZELICCSKOVICS
Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia
eMail Address: roxanne@ozeMail.com.au

(Hungarian Greek Catholic)

Janos ZELICSKOVICS was born at Kokenyesd, Ugocsamegye, Austria-Hungary (now Porumbesti) in l893. He had two brothers, George and Michael, and sister Elizabeth. Janos settled in New Jersey, brothers returned to Europe before World War I. I am looking for anyone with this surname and locality of origin. The Family was Hungarian Greek Catholic, so the Archdiocese should have records - births, deaths, baptisms, marriages, etc. How to Access these archives? What town in the Ugocsa County would have the records? Would only Romania have the records or would they be located in Hungary as he was born during the Austro-Hungarian Empire? There should also be official records of the family in the County Seat. Where is that? Any assistance would be appreciated

PAUL, Donna
eMail address: donnapaul@webtv.net

(Jewish)

Betty MARCUS was born 12 January 1896, or possibly 1895 or 1897. According to the manifest of the ship "Nieuw Amsterdam", out of Rotterdam that arrived at Ellis Island, New York on 31 May 1909, Betty was age 13. There were 4 other children: Max, David, Sarah and Tobey. They were Jewish. They settled at Chicago, Illinois and had emigrated from Jassy, Romania in 1909.

PENNINGTON, Marty
eMail address: MartPennington@aol.com

(Roman Catholic)

I am seeking information on my grandfather Lewis COMAN. He was born 6 December 1895 at Ploiesti, Romania. He had many brothers and sisters and I would like to find them or their descendants. He left his family to immigrate to the U.S. about 1900 to 1916. His mother's given name was Rita. I do not know what his dad's name was. The brothers names are: Basil, Frank and Steve. I do not know names of the other three brothers. One sister was named Jane, or so we believe. We believe Lewis traveled with Eugene PATAKI, who is also from Romania and immigrated first to New York, then to Pennsylvania and then settled in Ohio. My grandfather fought in the US Army from 1917 until 30 December 1918, so he had to immigrate before then. He was of Catholic religion.

POMEROY, Christina
eMail address: rtpomeroy@cs.com

(Romanian Orthodox)

I am beginning a genealogy for Spiridon BOGDAN, born in Fogaras, Romania 11 December 1879, and Eva POPA. Spiridon first immigrated to the USA in 1901 and was working there until 1907, but I cannot locate the ship he entered on that voyage. The records at Ellis Island show him coming again in 1911, traveling with two men from his village in Romania: Nicolac RAMBA and Joan MORAN, going to Garrett, Indiana, to work on the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. Eva POPA, born at Oltet, Fagaras, Romania, came through Ellis Island in 1913. Her son, Nicolae BOGDAN, born at Simbata de sus in 1909, should have come with her, but he is not listed on the ship's manifest. My grandfather, Spiridon BOGDAN, later written Sam or Samuel BOGDON, worked at Garrett, Indiana, for several years moving to Warren, Ohio in 1916, where he owned and operated a grocery store, Bogdon and Yakeil Grocery, on North Park Avenue. Another child, Mary BOGDAN, later Mary PANTZER, resided in Warren, Ohio with her husband George PANTZER and two daughters, Violet PANTZER and Evalene PANTZER. I would appreciate any information regarding the BOGDAN family in Romania, my father's passage to the US, and the location of the PANTZER children.

POPA, Andrie G.
eMail address: cwiggains@hotmail.com

My name is Andrei George POPA. I was adopted ten years ago and immigrated to the USA from Bucuresti, Romania. At the time I left Romania, I had one half sister by the name of Ioana POPA. We both had the same father. Her mother also had twin boys. Our father was a race car driver, he died on the way to a race. I was then raised by my grandparents, who died just before I was adopted. My birthmom also remarried, but I do not know her present name. I really would like to make a connection with my family, obtain a copy of my birth record, and find out more about my past. I am now 24 years old and living at Houston, Texas. My sister would be approximately 18 years old. If anyone could help me with any advice or information, it would be most appreciated. Thank you.

PRINE, Jackie
eMail address: tprine@wcoil.com

My great-grandfather, John Thomas CAPATINA, was born 1 September 1893 in Romania arrived in the U.S., immigrating with his cousin Vasile STOREY. His mother was Mary COTORA and father John Thomas CAPATINA, Sr. He married June Mae BILLINGS in a Romanian wedding in 1918 which was illegal in the U.S. so they remarried 1 April 1923 at Lansing, Michigan.

PUTNOKY, Agnes
eMail address: yagie1@juno.com

Agnes had a sister, Ilonka (Helen), and brothers, Arpad, Askoses and Martin. Agnes married Istvan (Stephen) NEMED and immigrated to America. SAMAC, Bonnie
eMail address: vbrrk5@aol.com

(Roman Catholic)

I am searching for information on Kata KOZLOVAK, born 26 November 1887. According to Ellis Island entries, she states her homeland as Darohai, Romania. I always assumed she was from Croatia. She was Roman Catholic, she married Ivan SAMAC from Goljak, Croatia, son of Joseph SAMAC and Hannah GOLISIC. She immigrated to the US in 1924 with her 3 sons: Vlonimir, Dragutin, and Stepan. She was married in Pennsylvania to Ivan in 1906, so she had to have been here at that time, but I cannot find any records. I have been told she would travel back to Croatia to visit with her mother and give birth to her sons. Only one of her 3 sons was born in US (Vlonimir, or William) he was born in Pennsylvania. The other 2 are listed births in Goljak Croatia. Kata died in March 1945 at Blairsville Pennsylvania. Anyone with knowledge of Kata (known as Catherine in the US) please acknowledge with eMail.

SMITH, John D.
eMail address: JOHNDS@iadb.org

(Eastern Rite Catholic [Uniate])

I would like to post a request on the origins of George Anthony BORBEY, Eastern Rite Catholic (Uniate). It is not known if his name was Americanized or not, or whether he was born in the U.S. or Romania. A World War II veteran, he spent much of his life at Aurora, Illinois and died in Chicago in 1985 or 1986. He has relatives in Erie, Pennsylvania.

STALLER, Eileen
eMail address: eibern@aol.com

(Jewish)

I would very much appreciate any information on the town of Milcauca, Romania, or find the family origins. My great grandparents, Lazer (or Eliazer- son of Yitzak) COHEN and Ester (Esther) GREEN lived there according to the ship's manifest from Ellis Island. They immigrated 28 August 1906 on a ship named "Potsdam", from the port of Rotterdam. I believe that they were approx 50 and 51 years of age, (birthdates approx 1854) when they immigrated. They traveled with at least one child, Israel, who was approx 4 yrs old. They were among the last of the family to come to the US, settling at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, having sent most or all of their other nine COHEN children on ahead of them. Lazer's father, Yitzak, appears to have remained in Romania. We believe Lazer had a roadside inn in Romania, which sounded like "Kvritchma Inn," where people stopped to have a bite to eat. He was a teacher, and a Hebrew scholar. He was educated and tutored kids for their Bar Mitvahs. Was brought over by his son, Isaac who lived at Philadelphia.

eMail address:

Laszlo ZSEJKAN who immigrated to the U.S. from Transylvania, Romania on the ship "Statendamö" on 3 August 1907, arriving at Ellis Island on 13 August 1907. The information that I have is from his ship records which has "Vermes - Nasgod" or Vermes - Naszod" as the place of birth. On the ships log it has nationality as Hungarian and race/people as being Romanian. His closest relative was a "Garva ZSEJKAN" and I am not certain if that was his father or mother. The last name is VASSEL. My father's name was changed at Ellis Island when he was processed.
