I am looking for any information regarding the following person. He is my Grandfather who is now dead. Alexandru SCULES has a Romanian passport. His passport number is 23741 and since I can't read the language I'll enter some info as I see it: "Semnalmente: Anul nasterii: 1904" On another page there are Romamian Stamps with the following wording: "Liberat la Bucuresti la 23 August 1926 de Ministerul de Interne etc."

Since my Grandfather was a step-son to a Scules and took on his name, I am trying to trace my roots further back and would like names or places that I can talk and write to to get such. My Grandfather also served in the Austrian army when he was young and after that he immigrated to Canada via Poland and England according to his passport. Any info would be wonderful. Looking forward to a reply from someone.

I am searching for information about ancestors of Joseph KRADJEL born 1870 at Moritzfeld, Austria-Hungary. His parents were Johann KRADJEL and Elizabeth RICHTER Joseph married Anna von MEIER born 1873 at Moritzfeld. This German village is now in Rumania and called Maureni. Any information will be appreciated. I tried writing to Rumania but never received a reply. Any suggestions about where to write? Many thanks for your great work.

Webmaster Note: Moritzfeld also known as Moricföld, Temes Hungary was in the Banat of Hungary (SE Hungary) and became Moritfeld, Caras-Severin (north west) Romania after World War W I. The Roman Catholic parish registers (1786-1858 births, marriages and deaths) exist (microfilms #1190317 and 1190395) at the Famnily History Library (FHL) in Salt Lake City and are available on loan at a modest fee for viewing at your nearest LDS Family History Center (FHC). You should review the Banat FAQ available on this website and be in contact with someone on the Banat Discussion Group, a FEFHS member organization with a HomePage on this website.

My great grandfather was born in Romania. I am researching Romania's history, and culture, and also researching my family roots and ancestors. What a beautiful country, I plan to visit some time. I really don't have much to go by with information on my gr grandfather, so I browse alot, hoping I just might find a link. His name was Peter TATU, born 19 June l884 in Romania. He died at Kent, Ohio 15 November 1968 and is buried at Maple Grove cemetary in Ohio. I was told by my mother he stole away via ship to the US from Romania. She also mentioned that he changed the spelling of his last name, It may have been spelled TITUI or maybe TETIU ? I don't know where in Romania he came from, that is what makes my journey a challenge.

I noticed you are looking for some help with typing. I am very much interested in helping you. I am a house mom, and would love to spend my extra time on Romania data, I have become very interested in Romanian history, and I have spent some time studying the language. If you still need help please consider me - I love Romania.

(Jewish)

I am looking for any members of my family which originated in Focsani, Romania. At least three brothers migrated to the United States in the late 1800's. One was named Abraham, another was named Zisu (guessing at spelling) and I haven't found a name for the third. All three changed their last name to FOOSANER. I believe the original last name was FOCSANI (the same as the town from which they came). Their religion was Jewish. Two of the brothers (Abraham and Zisu) settled in the New Jersey / New York area and the third brother went to the midwest (Illinois, I believe, probably Chicago). I have found many of the family members in the United States but am wondering about others in Europe and possibly in Canada. I do not know if their were other siblings. Any information would be appreciated as we are trying to do a family tree.

I am searching for ancestors of JOSEPH RUNDJO ? (now RUNDIO) and his brother STEPHEN . JOSEPH born 1880 in Budapest area of Hungary died 1954 in Egg Harbor, New Jersey. They came to USA via Ellis Island in 1905 by ship and settled in New Jersey. Joseph married Margarate MARTINI from the GALICIA area of Romania and their sons are Alfred, (my father) Henry, Paul, Lawrence, and Joseph. Any info about these areas of Hungary / Romania appreciated, also where to list these surnames.

GILLETTE, Tegan
eMail address: Teganator@aol.com

I am looking for anyone who has information concerning my relatvies who emigrated from the Banat region of Romania. My mother was Julianna Catherine BAUMAN was born 9 February 1935 at Chicago, Ilinois. Her father was Alexander Baumann. BAUMAN is a German Jewish name. I know that he was born in Arad, Romania in 1913 and was 22 at the time of my mother's birth. He listed his occupation on her birth certificate as "waiter" although I've heard he was a chef in Chicago; perhaps he became a chef later. Alexander Baumann, or Alex as I have heard him referred to as, was married to Leona NOVAK. Leona was born in 1910 at Javornik, Poland (now the Czech Republic) and was a favorite "safe" city just over the border. I have no other information other than she was a housewife.

Alexander and Leona were divorced right after my mother's birth - within 18 months. My mother was raised by her Novak grandmother and Leona's remaining in-house siblings Sonia, Shirley, Lois, Constance, and Sophie. They lived in the Rogers Park area of Chicago which is within the city limits bordering Evanston. Leona and Alexander were never really spoken of since that time. I discovered their names when I received my mother's birth certificate via vital records. They have all but disappeared!

I know both Leona and Alexander have since died sometime in the 1970's, as one of them passed on when I was quite young and I remember my parents getting in the car and going to a funeral, but again for which I am unsure. I cannot find a vital record or any social security information. In my teens I met a "new" uncle. John Baumann (he seems to be Alexander's brother) was born 28 August 1910 I'm assuming in Arad, Romania as well. He claimed he was Hungarian, but in researching the Banat region I have learned that this became quite common as the Germans were becoming Magyarized as they say. Alexander could have been born in Hungary but claimed it was Romania at the time of the border change to avoid confusion.

According to my Uncle John's death certificate, his father's name was Joseph Baumann. His mother's name was Julianna. I believe I have an early photograph of the two and I will share the story behind the photograph with others researching this line. The story of the Baumann's arrival into the US was as follows; They left Germany and traveled down through Austria and Hungary, eventually winding up in Romania until they came to America. They were German but the eventually married outside of the German race incorporating Romanina blood. The word "gypsie" popped up on occasion. Gypsie? Romanian? Hungarian? This is all of the information I have so far. I am willing to share any or all information if anyone has anyting that might be of use in my search.

(Evangelical)

I am searching Transylvania for LIEHN, GRAF, WERBWL, TAUSAN and SOOS. The search for my relatives takes me to present day Romania. The village, Sercaia in the district of Fagaras county of Barsov. In a 1968 response from Dr. Serafim Oana, an attorney in Sercaia, I learned the following facts taken from the records of the Evangelic Parish in Sercaia:

My great grandfather was Ioan LIEHN and my great grandmother was Ana LIEHN born GRAF. Ana GRAF was born in Sercaia on the 17 September 1844. Iohn LIEHN and Ana GRAF were married in Sercaia on the 29 March 1864. They farmed two sugar beet farms and had three children, Aana, Ioan, and Ecaterina.

Ioan LIEHN born in Sercaia, 24 April 1887, was my Grandfather. Ioan LIEHN left Sercaia in November 1906 for Bremen, Germany to board the vessel FRANKFURT bound for Baltimore, Maryland USA by way of Galveston, Texas USA. He spent 35 days in steerage for which he paid 130 German Marks.(National Archives microfilm T844, roll 58, "page" 194.) Ioan was traveling with GRAEF (GRAF), Lorens.

According to the manifest both were born in Sarkany (Sercaia), Hungary and both were headed for Fremont, Ohio to stay with Johannes GRAEF. Both Lorens and Johannes are unknown to me. Ioan joined his sister Ecaterina LIEHN (next paragraph) in Fremont, Ohio. Ioan LIEHN married Elizabeth KAMPF a Donauschwaben girl in Detroit, Michigan on 26 January 1910 by Justice of the Peace Louis Ott. Ioan and Elizabeth were joined by his mother Ana GRAF LIEHN in Fremont on 4 February 1913 after the death of her husband Ioan LIEHN.

Ioan LIEHN and Elizabeth KAMPF LIEHN had three children, Henry, Rose and Gertrude. Henry John LIEHN was born on 24 June 1911 (My father) and he married Thelma Beatrice GROSSE and they had two children, Karen and Thomas. Henry died in Sturgis, Michigan 27 April 1981. Karen Sue LIEHN (changed to LEIHN) born 3 March 1941 in Sturgis, Michigan. Thanks in advance for any assistance in this search.

NAHODIL, Brian Edward
eMail address: BRIAN.NAHODIL@cpmx.saic.com

I am looking for information on the surname NAHODIL and attempting to narrow down the region where my Great Grandfather immigrated from in the 1880's to Northeast Pennsylvania. 6 Months ago, someone mailed me an inquiry about my family name and we corresponded once or twice. I have since lost the email address that person. I was not searching at that time or even interested in Genealogy, and did not write things down. She told me that I am related to a NAHODIL OR NAHODYL who was the Chief Carpenter for the king (?) of Romania. My Great Grandfather lists his origin from "Austria" in the 1910 census. I appreciate any info that anyone can give me or advice.
Webmaster's Note: There are at least two significant parts of Romania that were acquired from the Austro-Hungarian Empire after World War I: Transylvania (a former Hungarian region with some Germanic villiages in the north and northeast of Romania) and the Banat (a former Germanic region in the northwest of Romania). Since you surname does not sound Germanic and might be an ethnic Hungarian or Romanian surname, I would guess it is from Translyvania. Please send Barbara the probable religion of your ancestors - that will be a big help to others.

SCHROEDER, Richard

I am searching for information on Jacob COSEAULANU. I am not certain of the spelling of the surname. He was born about 1866 in Iassi, in the Bukovena Provence. He ran a forest preserve there, had sons Morris and Sigmund, and a daughter Celia. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

STEVENS, Vickey SCUREI
eMail address: vstevens@asu.uswest.net

My name is Vickey Scurei Stevens. I've been searching for my maiden name for sometime and finally found two people with my name, which is Scurei. One is in Sweden and the other is in Bucharest. The one from Sweden says they are of Romanian descent. My father is now saying that my name was changed when the family moved to the United States from Berlin. He also stated that the family is not of Romanian decent but of German decent. I don't think my father is correct because both my father and grandfather were born in Bucharest. My question is how do I go about getting records to prove to my father that the family is of Romanian decent and that the family name is spelled correctly.

SYNGE, John
eMail address: JohnSynge@aol.com

(Roman Catholic)

Because my father's parents died when he was young, we have little information about them. What we have is extremely confusing. My grandmother's maiden name was Maria MICLE. She came from Tigea (or Tegea) in Satumare province. My grandfather came from Jiunjiu (or Junju or Giungu). Here is the confusing part: We have the birth certificate and baptismal certificate of my aunt, born in Aurora, Illinois in 1915. The birth certificate shows the surname as KAICY and her father's first name as Luis. The baptismal certificate (from St. Michael's Romanian Catholic Church in Aurora), shows the surname as COITA or CAITA (it's hard to read), and the father's first name as Ignat. Their marriage certificate from the same church in 1911 shows his name as Ignat CATA. Finally, the cemetary records show him as Ignat CAITA. We presume the name was changed to KETE in the orphanage. Thank you for any light you can shed on this.

I am writing from the USA and am trying to locate anyone in Romania with the last name WINKFEIN or KAISER. My grand parents came over to the USA from Romania when they were teens. Their names were Anna Marie Kaiser and Andrew Winkfein. I am not even sure of the area they were from. We have some pictures and coorespondence from way back but letter was returned when we tried to contact. If you have any information or ideas on where to start (I am new at this), please contact me. Thanks in advance. PS. I might be interested in helping with the page (the typing thing).

YONKEL, M. R.
leegel@juno.com or MrYonkel@aol.com

I have recently been motivated to research my families history. For most of my 43 years I was led to believe that my grandfather, Harry GELOBTER, and his two brothers (Henry and Louis) were the only Gelobters to come to the US from Romania. I know that my great-grandfather, SIMON GELOBTER, had two other sons. Ralph Gelobter remained in Romania and had three daughters. His last surviving daughter , Cecilia PASQUELOVICI was last know to be living at Tel Aviv as of 1987. A fifth son (name unknown) died in Switzerland, never having married. Because the name GELOBTER is quite uncommon I never had reason to doubt that we were the only ones until I received a letter from a woman at Fredricksburg, Virginia whose maternal grandmother was named Ernestine Gelobter who was from Bukovena (Bukovina). I have since located a number of Gelobters across the US (who I will be contacting). I would like any assistance that you can provide in helping me to find any other Romanian Gelobters. I can be contacted either at or MrYonkel@aol.com Thank you for your help.
