My great-great grandparents lived in the Custenja, Constanza, Romania area. Their names were Andreas ADAM and Anna BLUMHAGEN ADAM They had nine children who I believe who were all born in this region. Their children were Louise, Friedrick, Wilhelm, Katharina, Johan, Mary, Carl, Christian, and Samuel. The information that I'm seeking is the parents of Andreas. Andreas was born around 1840. If there are any relatives still living in the region, I would like to correspond with them. On either the Adam family or the Blumhagen family. Thanks.
Webmaster Note: Your surnames and given names are Germanic. That means they were probably either from the Banat or Transylvania (both with Research Lists on this website). Both were Austro-Hungarian crownlands prior to World War I. This website is for ethnic Romanians. When you know more about their origin you can request this entry to be moved to the correct Research List. You might have the Austria and German telephone books searched for persons with your surnames.

The death certificate of George Alexander OSTOFF lists his birth place as Bucharest Rumania, date of birth 17 July 1883. He emmigrated the America circa 1905. He married Sophie BAHREN (her parents immigrated from Austria) and they raised their children in Minnesota. He died 25 March 1947. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.
Webmaster's Note: There are two listings in the "Surname Search" section of the FHL Catalog for "Bahren" - the Bahr family from Schleswig-Holstein, which might be useful to review for that surname. Unfortunately there are no FHL microfilms of any Bucharest records and no indications that this situation will change any time soon. I suggest you add more detail of what you know about the vital dates and places for both of them (and of the first generation of children) in hopes one or more of the 5 million annual visits our website will be another record searcher for one of these lines.

(Jewish)

I am looking for information regarding my great grandfather, Moise CHETREANU, and his family. He was supposedly born in 1878 at Buhusi (Piatra-Neamtz district), Romania and married Surica HERMANN, born at Roman, Moldava in 1880. Their religion was Jewish. Moise and Surica had two sons: Léon, born at Adjud in 1905, and Jean (Ion) born at Bucharest on January 1907. My great grandfather emigrated to France towards 1909 and settled at Nice, then at Paris. Surica emigrated from Roman Moldava to France about 15 years later. I have found a CHETREANU who lives at present in Switzerland but who is originating from Bessarabia, and am wondering about others CHETREANU in Romania, and possibly in United-States or Canada. Information on the CHETREANU or HERMANN families would be most appreciated from anyone.

MASON, David G.
eMail address: D.Mason@shef.ac.uk

I am researching the name MAKSZEM which I believe may be Romanian. Can anyone confirm whether this is a Romanian name? My ancestor, Henry "MACSHEM", was living at London, England, for at least the period 1888 to 1895 and had three children by Elizabeth Mason. I have been unable to see him listed on the 1881 census surname index for England / Wales. Any help much appreciated.

MOORE, Ruthie
eMail address: RCM48@aol.com

I'm looking for any information on my grandparents. My grandfather Johann / John STEIERELHEIM (now called OROSHAZA) of Hungary. He was born 15 March 1884 to Johann / John Steier and Josephine AVER. When he passed away in October 1944 he lived at Cincinnati, Ohio. I know that he had a brother named Michael who married a Elisabetha MAURER and they settled at Detroit, Michigan. I have not been able to find this part of the family either. My grandmother Agnes KUSSEN / KUSSEN /KUSEN (not sure of the spelling) was born 4 September 1884 at Biled (which is north / west of Timisoara and also south of Arad). Her father was Michael Kussen / Kusen (born 1862; died 1883). Her mother was Susanna BRA. After Michael died her mother Susanna married a Jacob GALLO. I also know that my grandmother had a half sister named Eva Gallo who married a John KREITER. When my grandmother passed away in 1970 she to lived at Cincinnati, Ohio. If anyone could please help find information or tell me who to write to in Romania to get information it would be most helpful. I would also like to be able to find out it I have any living family over there. Wouldn't it be wonderful to find family that I don't know. Thank you so much for taking the time to read this. God Bless

PERRY, Jean
balk@theonramp.net

I am seeking ancestors of George Belcu (Balk) born 1 March 1871 at Aciota, Arad, Romania. He emigrated to the USA around 1911. He died in Wheeling, WVA. He married first wife, name unknown, and had sons Trian, Pavel, & Jose. His second wife Helen COZMA was born 20 July 1890 at Aciota, Arad, Romania. Her parents were John COZMA and Florence GUMBLE Cozma. George and Helen's children: Alex (born in Romania), Glenn, Nicholas, Raymond, and Rose.

PRIVAT, Mary Ann
eMail address: MAEJP@aol.com

My mother, Barbara AXENYUK , was born 10 May 1904 at the town of Maramarossziget, Hungary (when it was then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire). After WW I it became Sighetu Marmatiei, Romania. It is located in Northwestern, Rumania, on the border of Ukraine and very close to the present Hungarian Border. She emigrated to the USA in 1924 and was the only one of a large family to leave Romania. Her passport shows several spellings for her surname: AXENIUC, OXENIUC, which are shown handwritten by officials who issued the passport. However, her photograph, in the passport, is signed by her hand and reads AKSZENYUK, Borbala. Various correspondence she received through the years from Romania had a return address with the name spelled AXENYUK. Her father's name was AXENYUK Istvan, who died in 1957 at Sighetu. Her mother 's maiden name was Maria KISS, who died 20 March 1959 (at age 84), also at Sighetu. Maria KISS Maria was buried in the Eastern Orthodox Cemetery at Sighet. I assume she was buried in the same place as her husband. I find that very interesting since her maiden name KISS is fully a Hungarian name. I was under the impression that the family was originally Greek Catholic. I have come to learn that many of her siblings were baptised in the Greek Catholic Church, some were married in the Roman Catholic Church. This is just about all I know of my mother's parents. I assume from my grandmother's age at her death (84) and the year of her death (1959) that she was born in 1875 and her husband AXENYUK Istvan most likely was born in that same time period (1870-to 1876).

I have recently been in contact, by mail, with a cousin, located in Tirgu Mures. She knows nothing about our grandparents, except to say she believes the name AXENYUK to be Ukrainian in origin. My mother always said she was Hungarian, she spoke Hungarian and I assume her mother was Hungarian (KISS). My mother left 7 siblings in Romania when she immigrated. I have learned that many of them married ethnic Romanians.

I most fervently want to learn more about my mother's parents. I have been attempting to obtain birth, marriage and death records from Romania but so far, have been unsuccessful. Does anyone who reads this posting have any information about the surname AXENYUK, AKSZENYUK and a possible Ukrainian connection? I don't know if my grandfather was born in Sighetu or if possibly he or his ancestors were from Ukraine. Does anyone have any information about Sighetu and persons who may have emigrated there from adjacent countries? Does anyone know if any Church or State vital records from that region have been microfilmed by the LDS FHC. Any and all information, no matter how small, would be greatly appreciated.

I am trying to locate information on The Gingold Family. They came to the United States in 1901 from Jassy, Romania. My Grandmother's name was Rebecca GINGOLD. Her father's name was Isaac Gingold and her mother's name was Sophia PEARLMAN. Thanks for your help.

STOOPS, Joellen & Lyle
eMail address: joellen@wgn.net

I am trying to locate information on my grandfather and grandmother. He was Jan MANCIU and she was Paraskiva (aka. as Civa and Eva) OLOS MANCIU. On the petition for naturalization, it states the Jan was born on 2 February 1858, at Petrilova, Hungary and that Paraskiva was born at Resicza, Hungary. No date is given for her but it seems to have been 1879 or 1880. There was a 22 years age difference. I don't know if they married but they did have a daughter Aurora born 2 August 1897 at Resicza, Hungary. I have found the manifest list for the ship the SS Gera that sailed from Bremen, Germany in December 1901 and arrived in Baltimore in January 1902. Their ages at that time were 38 for Jan, 25 for Eva, and 3 for Aurora. In the far right column there is a notation that they have been to the United States before from the year 1899 to 1901.

I would like to know when they first came to the U.S. On the petition it stated they came over on the Studtgart in Jan 1901, but the petition was filed in 1911 so I thought they maybe forgot the real name of the ship. I would like to know if they were Romanian, Hungarian...what religion they were. It was my understanding that Jan worked in the steel mill and may have been a boss...also that he had been a bergermister of his village and that his brother was a professor at a university and that there was a sister that was also a school teacher. The topping to this tale is that he abandoned his wife and 2 children (girls) and ran away with the maid (my grandmother), had baby Aurora and ran away to America.

I also have my grandmother's marriage certificate. Jan Manciu died in 1916 and when she remarried, it stated her parents names as John and Catharine OLOS, and her mothers maiden name as JOURKITGA, YOURKITZA, YOURKITGEA, because of the handwriting and comparing it to a German handwriting alphabet list I am not sure of the J or Y's, I have copies I could send to anyone who thinks they could try and decipher the name. Thank you
Webmaster' Note: Hungary lost much land after World War I, including Transylvania to Romania and parts its northern land to Chezhoslovakia, now the Slovak Republic. While you decline to state the religion of your granparents, there is a Resica, Slovakia that formerly was Reste, Gömör, Hungary and a Petrikovce, Slovakia that formerly was Petrik, Zemplen, Hungary. Both have some church records on microfilm.
