(Orthodox Catholic - Romanian Orthodox?)

I am seeking information about my great-grandfather Stefan MACIAN, (originally pronounced "Ma-shan" with the accent on the second syllable), born in 1887 at Seitin, Romania, and died in 1933. His wife, Lean SYRATUIK, was from Austria / Galicia and I am told she spoke Polish; she was born in 1888 and died in 1951. They immigrated to America in 1910. Stefan's father, George MACIAN, followed in 1911. They all lived in Waynesboro, Pennsylvania as recorded in the 1920 census, and then they are found in the 1930 census (minus father George) in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania where they both are now buried. They had 5 children, all born in Pennsylvania: Sophia, James (Metro), George, Anuta (died within first year), and Steven. There is also some speculation that Stefan had a brother John as there was a John MACIAN, 2 years younger than Stefan (immigrated in 1914), who lived on the same street 2 blocks up from him in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Lena may have been the sister of Eva SERBA, wife of Pete SERBA (immigrated about 1914). The MACIANS were Orthodox Catholics.

I am looking for information on my grandparents' family ... the family names are TASCIUC, CUMLEC, and MAZURCAC. In 1938 a copy of my uncle's birth record was obtained from the Romanian Orthodox Church of Lipeniti. My uncle was born in 1905 and they moved to Canada shortly after. Village-Lipeniti, County Ceruauti, Region Nistrului, Area Bucovinei. I am looking for info on this area or village. Any information would be greatly appreciated. (Mr. Bell has been asked to provide additional names and information about his ancestors).

BUCHER, Bernard
eMail Address: bcbucher@web.de

I am searching for date and place of birth of a JOSEF BUCHER. He married a Franziska Anna PLIHACZKA on 14 November 1813 at Suczawa or Suceava, Bukovina, now located in Romania. They had a son, Josef Mathias BUCHER, born on 28 April 1816 in Suceava. It is passed down orally that JOSEF BUCHER emigrated from Rorschach / Switzerland to the Bukovina. Who knows him and can give me guidance?

I am researching David MOSES and wife Eva, born about 1860, from an unknown place in Romania. They immigrated to New York City around 1900. The children were Rebecca (my grandmother), born in 1887, and the oldest, Jack (possibly Jacob), Sofie, Abraham, Benjamin and Molly. I know that Molly was born in New York City. Eva had two sisters, Zuella and Fanny. I do not have their married names. I have no further information. I searched the Ellis Island website but could find no ship or date connections among the names of the parents and children. Could anyone tell me what the name MOSES might have been in Romanian?

DAHLKE, Chris
eMail Address: cdalke85@yahoo.com

I am looking for information on great-grandfather, Ernst LUCAN, born 28 October 1877. I know he lived at Vama, Romania. He immigrated to California, USA in 1905. His last name was later changed to LUCAS. In 1907 he married Rosa HEFTI from Switzerland. We know NOTHING of their lives before they came to the USA. Somehow they made it to the Chicago area, because part of his farm is now a part of O'Hare airport. He later moved to Wisconsin.

DRAGANESCU, Mark
eMail address: draganescu@yahoo.com

(Greek Orthodox)

I would like any information on Constatine DRAGANESCU, born May, 1877 at Buzias. His mother's maiden name is Ileana MAGA. He came to the United States and settled in Philadelphia in November 1907. My grandmother, Simileana MICU was born April / May 1885 or 1887. She immigrated to the United States in December 1909. I believe they were married in 1907 in Romania in the Greek Orthodox Church. I have been unable to obtain any civil or Greek Orthodox records. I would appreciate any guidance on where to obtain additional documentation.

Rosa POLLAK was born at Orosken, Romania on 14 November 1923. She married Shaier POLLAK on 7 June 1945. In August of 1945 she registered as a Displaced Person at the Landsberg DP (Displaced persons) camp. According to documents, Shaier is supposed to have died in October 1945, possibly at Landsberg. Rosa was also at Buchberg and St. Ottilien. Rosa's parents, deceased as of 1945, were Meier and Regina POLLAK. Regina's maiden name was GRUN. Rosa was pregnant and went to Munich where I was born at the Frauenklinik on 28 June 1946. We were separated as of 14 July 1946. I was sent to the United States in November 1947. We think Rosa may have been helped by the Bricha to immigrate to Palestine. Any help would be appreciated.

FARKAS, Nadine

My great grand mother was Julia (BORBEJ) GALL. She was 23 years old when she immigrated to Canada 18 July 1928 from Romania. She arrived at Quebec port in 1928. She was already married to Joseph GALL at the time and pregnant with my grandmother Margret. If anyone knows of the BORBEJ surname please contact me.

FOX, Johnny

My uncle,, John or Ioan ILIOVICIU, was a priest at Mosnita Lang, Timsoara from l950 to l957. The best I can make things out is that our family goes back to Danes-Sighisoara. Uncle John was born on l5 January l891. His wife's name was Valeria. We wrote to each other in the 1960's but he was afraid that the communists would cause him problems, so I stopped writing to him. My grandmother, Elizabeth CONSTANTIN / CONSTANTINE was his sister; his other sisters were Maria, Illena Ana, Virginia, and brothers were Nicolae, Roman, and one other I can't see the spelling very well (worn down). His grandfather was Nicolea Illiut ILLOVICIU.

GLEISER, Marcos

My great-grandfather was Meier GLEIZER, from Ataki (also Ataky, Otaci), now in Moldova, formerly in Romania, Ukraine, Bessarabia. Meier GLEIZER was married to Rachel GROISMAN (born circa 1855, died 1860). Meier GLEIZER apparently remained in Ataki when the family immigrated to Argentina. My great-grandmother Rachel GROISMAN GLEIZER and five children -- Manuel, Samuel, Marcos (born 1880), Fishel and Golde -- came to Argentina, under protection of Baron HIRSCH, circa 1900-1910. Her sister, Maria GLEIZER GROISSMAN, emigrated also. Rachel GROISSMAN was born circa 1855 and died in 1924 in Argentina. Marcos GROISSMAN was born in 1880 in Ataki, Romania, and died in Chile in 1949. Manuel GROISSMAN was born in 1889 in Ataki and died in Argentina in 1966. After a few years Marcos GLEISER DAJ (my grandfather) continued on to Chile, and Golde was married with a US citizen from Texas or Kansas City, Missouri and traveled to US where she was naturalized in Superior Court, Philadelphia, PA, USA in July 1898. The other brothers remained in Argentina. Samuel GLEIZER, 27 years, arrived in New York in 1923, on the ship "SS Pan American", for a visit to his sister Goldie SHORE. In the same trip arrived Goldie SHORE, age 45 (I suppose that it is not her first entry to USA). If anyone knows something about Goldie, I will appreciate it very much.

HASSLER, Sandra

I am looking for my grandfather's and grandmother's family. They both lived at Bucharest, Romania during the late 1800's and immigrated to Estevan, Saskatchewan, Canada during the late 1800's or early 1900's. Egnatz MARTIN was born 21 February 1886 and Agatha BoGOLOUSKI was born 28 February 1887. I do not know if this is a correct spelling.

HAUPTMAN, Edna
eMail Address: rnsefh@yahoo.com

(Roman Catholic)

John HAUPTMAN (1848-1929), emigrated 1907 from Pankota, Arad, Romania to America, with his wife, Rose BETTISCH, (1858-1924) and left 5 children already dead. They moved directly to Bloomington, Illinois, USA. This area has many different names of people who immigrated from these two towns, apparently to be part of a large train build / repair area in this town. I wonder if these people had been recruited? Their son, Joe HAUPTMAN, (1886-1962) married Maria KEMMERLY (1890-1971) from Sintana, Arad Co, Romania, and emigrated later, after his first wife and child had died. Joe, John, and Maria stated they were German on their passenger list; the BETTISCH said Hungarian. I wonder when these people came to the Transylvania area? I would like to get them back to their German or Hungarian roots.

I am seeking relatives of and information about Frigyes Vilmos GUNNESCH, also known as Fridrich GRUMESCH, and Fred GUNESCH, born 11 November 1866 in Brasso, Roumania. On 15 March 1900, he and his wife, Terezia, resided at "Brasso T. honkerus udvar g" and they were evangelists. His occupation was real-school custodian. He immigrated to the United States, arriving at Ellis Island on 7 May 1913, and was naturalized on 10 September 1925 in Cleveland, Ohio. I believe he may have had brothers and/or sisters.

I am also seeking relatives of and information about Terezia GUNNESCH, also known as Theresia GRUNESCH, nee SARIKA, who was born at Kaszon Alkiz, Csikmegye in 1867, immigrated to the United States, arriving at Ellis Island on 17 January 1921, and died on 14 January 1930 in Cleveland, Ohio.

I am searching for any information whatsoever on my great and great-great grandparents from Iasi and Bucharest, Romania. According to documents I found at Vienna, Austria, my great-grandmother, Irene Regina SCHIFFER, was born at Iasi, Romania 17 April, 1852. She had a sister, Therese SCHIFFER, who married Mr. BOHIN, though they divorced. My great-grandmother's father was Benjamin SCHIFFER, Doctor of Medicine from Iasi, Romania. We think he died at Wien (Vienna) sometime around the late 1860's-early 1870's. His wife was Henriette BARACH, place of birth unknown. Irene Regina SCHIFFER married my grandfather, Max KAHANE, at Vienna (Wien) Austria 25 June 1871. My mother had a family crest which she inherited from her grandmother, Irene SCHIFFER, and which had been awarded to Dr. Benjamin SCHIFFER by King Karl of Romania (I or II??) because he was his personal physician. This is undocumented, but my mother had no reason to lie about it and documents uncovered in Vienna have shown
that he was indeed a physician ... Our copy of this crest was sold after the war (World War I). If anyone has come across any of these names while researching Romanian (or Austrian) genealogy, I'd appreciate hearing about it.

I am looking for my BERKOWITZ and JACOBSON descendants from someplace in Romania. My great-grandfather, John BERKOWITZ, immigrated to the United States in 1901; while my great-grandmother, Fanny BERKOWITZ (nee JACOBSON), immigrated to the United States in 1902. I do not know if they were married to each other prior to immigrating to the United States. My great-uncle, their first-born son, was born in Denver, Colorado in 1903. They moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota by 1926, and subsequently moved to Los Angeles, California. I am trying to find their respective ancestors.

I am researching my father, Gerassimos DORIZAS, born 17 July 1925 at Zimnicea. I understand his family originally came from Cephalonia, Greece. He came to Australia from Romania via Greece about 1949 - 1951(?). He had an uncle in America, but Gerry came to Australia as a displaced person. He married Margaret ANDERSON and had 5 children, (I am the oldest daughter). He had three sisters, Gela, Lia and CocoLia. Gerassimos died in 1977, and his wife died in 1996. We have lost touch with his family. I am wanting to make contact with any members of his family, and hope someone will get in touch.

PINTEA, Larie
eMail Address: PinteaT@aol.com

My father was Ilarie PINTEA, from Craiva (near Alba Julia) in Transylvania. My mother was Sylvia (Savina) MUNTEAN, from near Alba Julia. My paternal grandfather Stefan MUNTEAN came to US in 1909 from Barabance, or on ship registry "Barband," a small village close to Alba Julia, Romania. My mother Sylvia lost contact with her father about 1925, when he lived in the Detroit, Michigan area, possibly at Hamtramack, Michigan. My grandmother, Susanna MUNTEAN, later remarried to a POPA, still later to a HADA, and lived at Sharon, Pennsylvania then at Elyria, Ohio, where she operated a boarding house for Romanian immigrants. My father, Ilarie PINTEA, was the only member of his family to emigrate. He came immediately to Erie, Pennsylvania when he was sixteen years old. He later moved to Cleveland, Ohio, and elsewhere in the Midwest, at one point working as a cowboy on a ranch near Alma, Kansas. Later he founded a Romanian language newspaper, known as the Vagabondul. This was published in Cleveland, and went to Romanians in many cities. My father returned to Erie, Pennssylvania, where he died in 1969; mother died in 1978.

I need information on George BRUSLEA, born about 1880, and wife Mary. Their son was George Nicholas, born about 1900 near Bucharest and came to the US about 1916. The first George above had a brother, Constantine who was a journalist and was sent to Siberia. Any help will be appreciated.

I am trying to find birth record for my grandfather, Henrik SALMAN (or SALAMON) who was born 1865 at NagySzeben (Sibiu). He died at Budapest (Hungary). He was married with KRESZ Maria. Her confession was Augustinian. Any help will be appreciated.

SCHWARTZ, Nancy
eMail Address: nancjs@yahoo.com

(Jewish)

I am searching for information about Mendel SCHWARTZ, who married Dvojra (Dora) POLLACK. They lived at Koloszvar (Cluj) and had two children, Rose (maybe Rosalia) and Samuel, born 1885; then moved to Rosavlea (Rosalia), and had another child, Bela, in 1901. Dvojra may have died circa 1901. Mendel died, we think, around 1909-1911. I would love to know anything about Mendel and Dvojra, and their parents.

I am also searching for information about my KATZ family. Samuel (Shmuel Hersh) KATZ, Solomon (Shulem) KATZ and Marton (Mordechai) KATZ, born possibly at Maramaros. I do not know what became of Samuel, but Solomon married Regina TAUB, they lived in Petrila, and had one daughter, Berta, in 1913. Marton KATZ, married Sarah (Czili) POLLACK. They lived in Petrosani, where they had a drygoods store and bar. Their children were Frida, Iohanna (who died young), and Isidore. Isidore married Barbara Olga MADENISEK in 1936 in Resita. I am also searching for information on the following people from the same areas mentioned above: Sydney WEISS; Bernat MALEK; Roszi FRIEDMAN; Mary GLATTSTEIN.
