My great-grandfather was Tamas Illie MOJSZESZKU or MOISESCU. My
main question is, Is that a Romanian name? What are your
thoughts on this? He was born in 1875 at Nagy Szt. Miklos which
I believe was in Torontal county, and emigrated to US in 1911.
He always called himself Romanian, and he spoke Romanian (as well
as Hungarian and German). His friends from Nagy Szt. Milkos who
also emigrated to Minnesota had such names as BARZAN, ALBU,
SARAFOLEAN, NEDELCU, DOICHITA, others (I have info on some of
these families). They all "sound" Romanian, but I am wondering
if there are any ideas 1) on the origin of the name MOJSZESZKU /
MOISESCU and 2) if it is possible for me to find his 1875 birth
record.
Webmaster's Note: Nagyszentmiklos, Torontal, is about 65
Kilometers NW of Temesvar, capital of the Banat of Hungary. The
location was Hungarian until 1919 when it became Romanian. It is
now called Sinnicolau Mare, Romania. This area had ethnic
Hungarians, Germans and Romanians living side by side. Given his
statements and linguistics, the assumption he was ethnic Romanian
seems reasonable. Romanians are known to have relocated to
Hungary at various times due to conflicts with the Ottoman
Empire. You might contact a professional genealogist like Gordon
McDaniel of Hoover Institution for an authoritative answer to
your name question.
As far birth records for Nagyszentmiklos, they are found under
its German name: Gross Sanktnickolas. Catholic church records
(1753-1818) are on 2 FHL microfilms. The 1828 Land Census of
Hungary also has land records for that location. Both of these
predate your grandfather's life (1875-). To date the FHL has
been unable to establish microfilming in Romania. It might be
possible to find the birth records for 1875 at the Sinnicolau
Mare Catholic church. However research in Romania is known to be
difficult. We know of no reliable professionals in country.

I am searching for information regarding my mother's family from
Ediniti, Bessarabia. Her family came to America in 1930 when
this town was still in Rumania. Her name is Hana. Her father's
name was Abraham ROITMAN. Abraham Roitman had several brothers,
Yankel, Solomon. My grandmother's name was Ita. My mother had a
sister who returned to Bessarabia in 1932. Her name was Ecu.
She married a man by the name of GOLDENBERG I was told that she
had two sons, but was killed by Nazis or Rumnanian working with
the Nazis. Thanks for your help.

We are trying to find information on my wife's grandfather,
Constantin NAUM, and his family. He was born around 1860 in
Macedonia and died 27 July 1913 at Ghidigeni, near Galati
Romania. He was the third eldest of eight brothers. One of the
brothers was named Marc (Mark). We think that the family name
was GOGOLI. Constantin married Thomaedha (Fomaida) TSIVITSE
about 1901 at Ghidieni. Thomaedha Tsivitse was born about 1885
at Korce Albania. Constantin and Thomaedha had three children.
Olga, a girl, was born on 28b May 1906 in Ghidigeni. Victoria
was born 12 April 1911 at Ghidigeni. Constantin (Gusti), a boy,
was born 12 February 1914, in Albania. Victoria is my wife's
mother.

I am researching my grandfather's side of the family. His name
was Henry ZUHAK and he was born in Glogovatz, Romania (formerly
Austro-Hungary) on 9 March 1896. His mother was Magdalene or
Theresa MARKSTEINER ZUHAK and his father was Heinrich ZUHAK. We
have a baptismal card from Heinrich ZUHAK, dated 16 March 1870,
Glogovatz. The story handed down through the family is that
Heinrich was lost as a child, possibly because of a war, and
wandered til he was taken in by the MARKSTEINER family. We
believe his parents names were Peter ZUHAK and Christina GROH
ZUHAK and we would appreciate any information. We note some
unusual spellings of ZUHAK in documents: JUHUUK, JUHAUK. To our
knowledge, the family name of ZUHAK is extinct. So we would be
delighted to find someone in Romania or to discover that Heinrich
had a sister or brother that also survived. Heinrich ZUHAK
brought his family to the United States in the early 1900's
and settled in the Chicago area. I do not think there are any
ZUHAK'S in the U.S. now. Please let me know if you have
information on any of these family names.
You requested further information about the family religion. I
believe my grandfather Henry and his father's family (Heinrich
Zuhak) belonged to the Roman Catholic church at Glogovatz. There
are entries on FHL microfilm for them as far back as the 1780's.
The spelling at that time was also ZUHAK. Is this German? Is
this Jewish? I am also trying to find a way to locate the
records from 1835 to 1900. Do you think Romania will ever allow
microfilming of these records? I would write to the church, but
do not know the name. Lastly, I am trying to locate any other
ZUHAKS in the world (if any exist) before my mother dies. She is
79. Any suggestions? Thanks so much.
Webmaster's Note: There is a Romania Yellow Pages on a
colelction of Internet telephone books found on the FEEFHS Genealogy Toolkit.
Have you tried the various Look-ups on the FEEFHS Genealogy
Toolkit? Are you aware of the existence of an Iraq Kurdish
legend about a 10th century ruler named Zahuk? That might call
for a visit to a research library with a good Balkins and middle
east historical section.
As for microfilming in Romania, we are always hopeful, but have
heard nothing to change our opinion that Romania is not yet
interested or ready to accept a microfilming aggreement. The
fact that the end result would eventually greatly increase the
tourism business and their foriegn exchange postion by
encouraging visits from descendants of Romanian and Banat
ancestors apparently has not been recognized by Romanian
authoritiies/

(German Lutheran)
My grandmother Johanna UNGER (born March 3 1898) and great-
grandmother Sarah GASSMANN (born April 26, 1868) were born in
Pretai, Transylvania. Sarah came to the USA in 1892. She
married Antone KROEN who was from Bohemia, Austria. Since they
both came over in 1892, I suspect they were married before they
came to Pennsylvania. Johanna came over as a child before 1910
as she showed up on the 1910 Pennsylvania census as living with
Antone and Sarah. She later married their son Harry Kroen.
Some paperwork has Johanna and Sarah as being from Bohemia and
Austria. I assume all these areas were the same place at one
time. They were all German Lutherans. Supposedly Johanna came
over with her older sisters Mary and Kate. Where is Pretai?
What is it's current name? Is Pretai the correct spelling? Is
there anyway to look up birth records? How can I find other
family in the area?

I am looking for information regarding my Grandfather, Wilhelm
KUMHER, and his family. Wilhelm KUMHER was born 26 April 1906 at
Resita, (now) Romania. His parents were Leopold KUMHER, born 9
November 1877, died 26 May 1911 (at Resita), and Teresa KAPUSTA
(1881-1936). I do not know Leopold's parents' names. Teresa
KAPUSTA's parents were Peter KAPUSTA (supposedly born at
Bratislava) and Teresa LOIDL (supposedly born at Franzdorf,
Romania). I have been corresponding with some of the KAPUSTA
relatives, who insist they are of Germanic lineage, but cannot
trace their ancestry further than Peter KAPUSTA. The LOIDL
family supposedly came from Vienna. My Grandfather Wilhelm
KUMHER came to America in 1914 when he was 8 years old. Anyone
having information on the KUMHER, KAPUSTA, or LOIDL families
would be most appreciated.
Webmaster's Note: Your Resita location, formerly called
Resicabanya, Hungary, has one microfilm reel of Roman Catholic
churchbook records (1826-1848 - film #1271580) available at your
nearest Family History Center (on loan from the FHL at Salt Lake
City).

I am searching for information about my husband's grandfather,
David MARKOVITZ. His draft registration card for 1918 lists his
birthdate as 18 July 1882. He did not file for citizenship but
his wife, Anna, did. Her 'Intention' lists his birthdate as 18
June 1883 in Roman, Rumnia. Can anyone tell me where I can write
for family information in Romania for this ancestor. He changed
his name sometime in 1937, when he remarried, to MARKS and I have
not been able to find his death certificate. All help will be
appreciated.
Webmaster's Note: You might check the World War I Draft
Records (on FHL microfilm) for confirmation of David's place of
birth. The absence of items you may know - such as religion,
wife's maiden name, children's first names and death location, if
known - might help other record searchers contact you and give us
the basis for other possible suggestions.

(Roman Catholic)
My father was born in Temesvar, Rumania, on 29 December 1901 to
Fanny BOUBAL and John KIRITZER. I think this was a phonetic
spelling given to him when he went through Ellis Island
Immigration. My father's name was Joseph Charles Kiritzer. I
would like to know what is his real surname was and where to go
for more info. His religion was Catholic. I think that both
his father and mother were born in Temesvar also. My mother was
Katherine KNIEP born in Schwabia. Her father was Alexander
BOGDAN of Temesvar. Any info would be most appreciated.
Webmaster's Note: If your date is correct, your father was
actually born in Timesvar, the capital of the Banat region of the
Austro-Hungarian Empire - now called Timisoara, Romania. This
was the Romanian part of a Germanic region of Hungary that also
had ethnic Hungarians and Romanians living there. The FHL
microfilm of Catholic church records only cover from 1717 to
1852.
I suspect Boubal is a Hungarian name. Kniep and Kiritzer are
both Germanic. There are 4 Kniep genealogies in the FHL Catalog
under "Surname Search", although none references Schwabia in the
summary. Bogdan is listed on the FEEFHS Website index appearing
in Banat (Zichydorf and liebling villiages), Slovenian, Polish
and Romanian surname lists on the FEEFHS website.
Considerable information about the Banat is on the Banat FAQ's on this website.
Go through it first to come up to speed on the history and
background of this region. Then you will be prepared to
subscribe and better understand the Banat Online Discussion
Group.

I am searching the Transylvania area of Romania for a Robert
Bitan. He is 22 years of age, born in March 1975. He has blonde
hair, blue eyes, and is about 5'10". He has one sister, and his
parents are divorced. As far as I know he is living with his
sister and father, and works as a ski instructor. He speaks
English pretty well and up until July 1997, had been working
aboard a Royal Caribbean cruise ship as a waiter. I am
desperately trying to track down his address or any information
on his where abouts. Please send me any information.
Thanks!

(Greek Catholic, Ruthenian Catholic?)
The family KUSAILA is trying to track it's roots back to the old
country and beyond. My grandfathers original name on his baptism
certificate shows Jacobus KUSAFTA born at home in Czarne (Czyrna,
Corna, Chyrna, Czarna) Poland on 2 April 1889. The document
shows that he was of the Greek Catholic church, but I remember my
grandfather telling me he was from the region known as Galicia
and that his parents were members of the Ruthenian church. My
great grandfathers name was listed as Antonius Kusafta and his
wife was Maria VON FRYNCKIEWICZ. In my grandfathers Social
Security book, on the left page, under his SSN is the name Jack
Kusaila written in a non-family hand. On the right page is the
name Yacko (short for Jacob I think), KYCAIRIA (possibly the
original spelling of Kusaila). Although my grandfather was born
in Poland, I have checked with some friends in Bosnia who are
training Police from Austria, Poland, Romania, Hungary, the
Ukraine, and Czechoslovakia. The students told the instructor
that the names were familiar in Hungary, Poland, and Romania but
that more research would have to be done to back track the family
names any further. I remember seeing old photos in my
grandfathers home about 35 years ago of people in military
uniforms who my grandfather said were his uncles who were in the
Army of Romania. Any help you could shed on the subject would be
greatly appreciated.
Webmaster's Note: Czarna, Galicia was in the Austrian
district of Pilzno before 1919. The FHL has 2 reels of Roman
Catholic churchbooks (1784-1960) from this location. Are they
worth checking? These records were microfilmed at the Archiwum
Diecezjalne w Tarnowie = Tarnowa (Debica), Rzeszow, Poland - I
preume this was the church diocese archives there. Other Czarna
town records are probably located at a nearby civil archive
established by Poland - perhaps in Debica. In any case, check
your various surnames in the LDS Ancestral File.

Frederick (Fritz) EGLER was born 1871 at Sackelhausen, Hungary
and died in 1939 at St. Louis, Missouri. His wife was Barbara
MAYER (MEYER), born 15 October 1878 (at Sackelhausen, Hungary?),
died 16 May 1919 at Mount St. Rose Hospital, St. Louis, Missouri.
Thier children: were all born at St. Louis, Missouri: Anna,
Peter, Katherine, Louisa, Barbara, Margarette and Eva. One child
was buried at sea on the way back to Hungary for a visit. We
think that his name may have been John (?)
Webmaster's Note: Your surname is Germanic. There were
German speaking persons living in all parts of Hungary. There
was a Sackelhaus in the Banat - a heavily Germanic region of
southeast Hungary prior to World War I - also known as
Szakalnaza, Temes, Hungary and now called Sacalaz, Timis,
Romania. The Roman Catholic churchbook (1766-1844) in the German
language is on 3 reels of FHL microfilm.

I'm searching for info on my grandfather and his relatives. His
name was "Mack" PESKAN. He died in 1963. He came from Romania
to Canada, then moved to Detroit, Michigan. He came over with
two sons, Julius, and one I never met. He married Verica, my
grandmother, in Canada. They had two daughters, Vera, my mother,
and Elizabeth. I believe that my grandfather's son, whom I never
met, may be living in Ohio. My grandmother, Verica, came from
Czechoslovakia, I think. Don't have a clue as to maiden name.
I'd like to find any relatives here so that I can not only find
my grandfather's family, but possibly locate my grandmother's as
well. Thanks.
Webmaster's Note: For anyone to be able to help you, you
will need to share more of what you know about where and when
Mack arrived in Canada, when/where they were married and when he
came to America. You also need to contact the Canadian Genealogy
Society for the province he emigrated to. Seek their assistance
in using Canadian records to determine his Romainian place of
origin in Romania and his wife's maiden name.
SPIESS, Jeanne
eMail address: JSpiess@aol.com
I am looking for any information about the following: Frederick
SPIESS, born 12 April 1868 at Bucharest, Rumania (His father was
Conrad, born in Germany, I believe, and his mother was Anna
PUTZ). Ecaterina TOLLENBERG born 28 February 1975 in Galatz,
Rumania (Her father was Apolitian, her mother was Susanna). They
were married 6 June 1986. They had 2 children before they
immigrated, William F. (Wilhelm), my grandfather, born at Tulcea
on 28 March 1898, and Joseph, born in Mangalia in 1899. They
immigrated though Antwerp and arrived in New York on 1 May 1901
on the SS Southwark.
SPITZ, Irene CRAMES
eMail address: IreneS888@aol.com
(Jewish)
Solomon CRAMES left Iasi Romania in 1883 or 1884 with 2 sons,
Samuel and Harris, and 5 daughters, Sarah, Annie, Frieda, Lena,
and Bessie. I have no information about Solomon's wife. I can
trace all family members to the current generations but know
nothing about other Romanian family. This is a Jewish
family.
I have located the CRAMES surname in Germany, not Jewish, and am
looking for some connection prior to 1880, as this is such an
unusual name. The two members of the CRAMES family in Germany,
that I have had contact with know nothing about their family
except that one Crames grandfather came from Dudeldorf (near
Bitburg). I received that information today. I guess I have
answered my own question about where to look next. I would
appreciate hearing from anyone who has come across this name.
Webmaster's Note: For Iasi, there are Hebrew inscriptions
from old Jewish cemeteries in Iasi and Bucharest (1610-1864) on
microfiche #6312317. Also Austrian Army death records
(1854-1857) for the Iasi Field Hospital are on microfilm and
there is a 1939 guide to the holdings of the Iasi Regional
Archives. There are three collections of Dudeldorf Catholic
Church records (1743-1883) on microfilm at the FHL in Salt Lake
City. In addition with a rare name like yours, the Ahnenstammkartei de Deutschen
Volkes collection should be checked. You might also consider
having IGS search of German
Telephone Book on CD-ROM for other Crames who might have the
genealogy answers you are searching for.
TURNER, Susan
eMail address: sturner@mashell.com
I recently received a call from a second cousin in New Zealand
that I didn't know existed. He told me some family history that
he has come accross that was not previously known by any of our
family here. He stated that my g-g-grandfathers' family were
Romanian gypsies. There was some conflict with the Russians who
forced them to settle on the border of East Germany and Poland in
a town he believes was Werbern. He later went to Australia for
the gold rush in Victoria and eventually settled in California.
The name is Christian Domaschenz. Any ideas?
Webmaster's Note: Ther is no Werbern in my gazetteers but
there are several Werben locations in Saxony, Brandenberg and
Pomerania. In particular the Werben in Kreis Pyritz and the
Werben in Kreis Cottbus Brandenberg are possibilities. You might
check the microfilms of the Lutheran church records for each of
them stareting in the early 1800's. Perhaps they were not
gypsies after all and maybe they attended church!.
This website is publishing the only extractions of the San
Francisco vital records after their loss in the earthquake/great
fire of 1906. However Jim Faulkinberry is only up to 1884 as of
the date of your submission, so it may take a little longer to
find them in California. Pinning down some approximate years on
a timeline for them including an approximate birth date will be
important to your research.
VANCS, Charles

I am searching my family tree and came upon your site. My Great
Grandfather's name was Vasil VANCIU, born 1869 at Satu Mare,
Romania. He married MARIA ?, also born in 1869 at Satu Mare.
Any information that can be found on this family will be greatly
appreciated.
