I am looking for information on the ancestors of my grandparents who were John (Ioan) Paul DANCIU born 27 Dec 1886 ?Bukarest, Romania. He emigrated to the US about 1913; married Ana (Tica) BORCOMON on 29 Dec 1914 in Lake Co, Indiana; died 8 December 1959 at La Porte, Indiana. John DANCIU's parents were: Paul DANCIU and Mary FACILLA or FACILIA. I have been told that John DANCIU had several sisters and no brothers, however this is unsubstantiated information. Ana (Tica) BORCOMON was born 15 August 1891 at Kaholm or Rupea, Romania. She emigrated to the US about 1913 and died 9 December 1955 in Lake County Indiana. Ana BORCOMON's parents were Josif BORCOMON and Sofia. I have no knowledge of possible siblings for Ana. John and Ana (Borcomon) DANCIU had two sons; John Jr. and my father George DANCIU both born in Lake Coounty Indiana. Ana (Borcomon) DANCIU had one daughter, also named Ana, whom she left with her parents in Romania when she emigrated to the US. The daughter was not the child of John DANCIU and never came to the US. Anyone with information on this family or suggestions on how I should continue the research please contact me. Thank you.

I am seeking information about my grandfather, Jacob KEMPF, and his parents. He was born in Arad, Saint Martin, Romania on 21 December 1887. He emigrated to the U.S. in 1907 to meet his sister Catherine in New Jersey (He also had a brother named Frank in Brazil (I believe). He sailed on the ship "Pretoria" from Hamburg, Germany to Hoboken, NJ. I believe his father's name was Jacob and his mother's name was Teresa KILLIAN. Jacob married a woman named Anna in Cleveland, Ohio. He remarried after her death to a Johanna STUECKLER from Freiberg-in-Breisgau, Baden-Wuerttemberg, Germany in 1931.
Webmaster's Note: Your surname is Germanic and the location they came from was part of the Banat prior to the end of World War I. Check "Banat" and your surname in the FEEFHS website Index (see navigation links above or below).

I am looking for information on my father's family. I have a Romania birth certificate for his uncle. His name was Ion FARTAIS and his birthplace is listed as Zaharesti (spelling?), Romania. The birth date was 17 June 1897. His parents were Constantine Andrei (sp?) FARTAIS and Domima (sp.?) CRISTENEAU (sp.?). The midwife is listed as Leonora Fartais. My grandfather was Mihail Fartais and he was born in the same place in 1895. We believe that there were 10 children in all born in this family. To our knowledge Ion and Mihail came to Canada alone around 1911. There should be many descendants in Romania. Another name mentioned in the family is Bucovina. My grandmother was born there in 1901. Her name was Garafina PUSCAS and her parents were George Puscas and Catrina OLTEAN. They too left family behind. I would appreciate any suggestions as to how to find information.

George SUNAS was born 30 March 1900 in Romania and came to the U.S. about 1913 with his older sister Mary SUNAS. He was in World War I and was underage at the time, but this may be how he got his citizenship. He married Mary BODONY (also born in Romania whose date of birth is 6 May 1905). I don't have a date for their marriage, but it was in the U.S. They had two children, Mary Helen SUNAS (my mother) born 27 March 1924 and a son, Joseph John SUNAS born 14 March 1928. George SUNAS date of death 2 July 1971 at Aurora, Illinois. Mary SUNAS year of death 1981 at Aurora, Illinois Joseph John SUNAS date of death 26 May 1966 at Aurora, Illinois. Mary Helen SUNAS WYETH date of death 5 March 1972 at Aurora, Illinois.

Mary Helen SUNAS married my father Clarence Irving WYETH on 12 October 1946. Clarence died 23 May 1988. They had four children: Donald Irving WYETH born 1 August 1947; Carol Ann WYETH SCHORIK born 20 August 1948; Susan Rae WYETH BARBER GENTRY born 17 November 1950; and James Allen WYETH born 20 December 1951. My brothers, sister and I are all still living. QUESTION: Is there some way to access records from Ellis Island as to what the original spelling of George SUNAS' name was before his intake worker there changed it to what it is today? I have looked in the book "Passenger and Immigration Lists Index", but it is hard to tell how to look up a name that was spelled differently than it is now. George SUNAS' cousin's name was changed also. But it came out JUNAS.

GILLICH, Leo

I am looking for any information on the following families who lived in and around Comlaus, Hungary (also called Szentanna, Santanna, Sanktanna and Komlos). This village is located approximately 30 miles north, of what is now Timisoara, Romania and is currently called Sintana. GILLICH married Katarina MERK. (GILLICH is also spelled GILICH). Their children's names are:
1) Josef GILLICH, born around 1896; died 1915. It is believed he died in World War I.
2) Katherine GILLICH, born 1898. She is believed to have lived somewhere in Germany.
3) Ferdinand GILLICH, born in 1900 at Sintana. He came to Canada in 1938 and died January 1974 at Rodney, Ontario, Canada. Married Barbara VEISENBRUGER.
4) Anton GILLICH, born in 1902; died in 1960 at Sintana. His son, also Anton was still living in Sintana in the 1980's.
5) Rose GILLICH, born 1907; died in 1966.
6) John GILLICH, born 11 March 1909; baptized at St. Anna Roman Catholic Church at Sintana; came to Canada in 1928; died 2 November 1955 at Moosomin, Saskatchewan, Canada. Married Anna Mary GEBKENJANS on 24 February 1939.
7) Elizabeth GILLICH. No information on her. It is believed she may have died at a young age.

If anyone has any information on the above, I'd very much welcome hearing from you.
Webmaster's Note: Your location was called Sanktanna or Neusantanna in German and Szentanna in Hungarian. It is in what was once called the Banat, a Germanic part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. This part of the Banat became Romanian after World War I. Your basic surnames are Germanic. There are four listings from them on this website relating to three other Banat villages - find them by entering your name in the FEEFHS Website Index above or below. The are considerable other Banat resouces on this wbsite including the Banat FAQ's - find them by typing "Banat" into the FEEFHS Website Index - a navigation link at the top and bottom of almost every page on our website. You should also get online with the Banat discussion group.

For many years now I have been trying to find out about my maternal grandfather. His name was Joseph PEANCO SIRAGHER, (only known spelling) he was of the Jewish Faith and came from Rumania and as far as I know a Town or City called Jassy or this could be spelled Isia, or Jassi. He was born about 1876. As far as I can ascertain he left Rumania about the turn of the Century (circa 1900) with his two brothers (names and ages unknown) possibly after some sort of Jewish purge in which his parents (again names unknown) were possibly killed. Then they trekked across Europe to France where they settled for a while. My Grandfather then came to England, in which year I don't know, where he settled and became a tailor although this may of been his trade in Rumania, again only guess work. One of the other Brothers is believed to emigrated to the United States from France, while the other is believed to of stayed in France. I do know that we are the only family in Great Britain to have the name of SIRAGHER. This was confirmed to my Grandmother many years ago by the British Government. He died in London in March 1928 of Tuburculosis. I have searched for many years but am yet to find anyone outside my immediate Family with this name, and every avenue I try has drawn a complete blank. If you or anyone knows anything about anything or anyone from this region of Rumania, or indeed any part of Rumania, or anyone anywhere that can help me find out more about my Grandfather or his Family I shall be forever grateful. I have only recently found out that his Father was a cabinet maker, and that my Grandmother was his second wife. The name of his first wife was Julia Dora SOLOMON from whom he was divorced, this I do not know where or when or even when they were married. I have never heard of any children from this marriage although there is the possibility that there may of been one son (name unknown). He was married to my Grandmother at Paddington Register Office in London on 18 May 1918 at the age of 41.

I am looking for more genealogical information. My great great grandmother was Dorothia BEGLO. She was born in Roumania in 1842. She was a midwife and held many superstions as fact. Her son was Daniel Beglo who was born 30 January 1883 at Bucharest. He married Katharina who was born at Bucha rest, I think, 20 October 1883. He married Katharina in 1901. I have their wedding picture. They emigrated in 1905 with Dorothia Beglo to Max, North Dakota. He owned a hotel in Max, North Dakota and had the first car there. He is mentioned in the Golden Jubilee for Max North Dakota. They had 6 children, Rueben, Marie, Edwin, Alvina, Ruth and Walter. There is a burial plot in or nearby Max North Dakota with the Beglo name. All I have is a picture of it. Any information on this part of my family would be much appreciated. I do know that Dorothia Beglo was considered the Matriarch of the family. I've been told she was mean/stern. Also, how do I go about getting their birth certificates in Bucharest, Romania? Thanks.

I am searching for information on Jovan GRBAV, born 6 October 1862 and married Rakila PENSAVAN who was also born in 1862. They resided at Banatsko, Novo Selo where they remained until immigrating to Canada in 1903. They had a son, Trajan who was born 16 June 1892 and was baptized at the Rumanian Orthodox Church "Descent of the Holy Spirit" in Banat, Nova Selo. I appreciate any help and suggestions regarding my research. Thank you.

I am looking for information/records on my grandmother: Rose WAKARUIK / WAKARIUK / WAKARUK who emigrated to Canada about 1916-1920. Rose emigrated to Saskatchewan from the Ukraine / Romania region near Chernovtsy. She witnessed WW I and perhaps the Russian Revolution. While in Saskatchewan, Rose witnessed the Dukabor protests although not a Dukabor herself. She was married to a farmer who she left and later divorced at least 10 to 15 years later when she lived at Detroit Michigan. Her daughter Helen was perhaps a result of this union. She later married Harry LIPINSKY at Detroit Michigan and was so affected by her past history, she would not reveal more than the aforementioned. Any information or referrals are truly appreciated.

I am trying to track down ancestors in Romania. My grandfather's parents emigrated from Romania around 1906 and said their ancestral village was Sighisoara. Their names were: Maftieu and Paraschiva CIONTEA GURLEA. They settled at Leetonia, Ohio. According to a 1910 census, Maftieu's brothers came over with him and they all lived together. His brother's names were: Coman and Vasile Gurlea. I do not know what happened to these brothers, either. I have Maftieu (who became known as Michael in America) being born 15 November 1880 at Fagarus, Romania. I know Paraschiva was born in 1887, but I do not know where. Both are buried in Hope Cemetery, Salem, Ohio. Maftieu died 16 March 1937 of pneumonia. He worked in the coke ovens in Leetonia's Cherry Valley. His wife died 19 August 1956. I'd like to find out information about Maftieu and his wife and connect with living relatives in Sighisoara. My grandfather told me that in Sighisoara the name Gurlea is like Smith. Please let me know any information you can find out. Thank you
Webmaster's Note: It is believed Sighisoara is the Romanian spelling after worlds War I. Check it out by entering it into the FEEFHS Website Index - see a link above or below.

I am trying to locate my uncle, Vladimir CERNASOV. He must be around 60 years-old (born about 1935). He trained as a Medical Doctor in Romania and then moved in the late 60's to early 70' to US. He might be living in West Virginia. His parents were: Nicolaie CERNASOV and Maria NAUM. His father, Nicolaie CERNASOV, died in 1984 in New York. Thank you for your help.

I am looking for my father's parents' families in Romania. I know only that my grandfather's name was Vasily (Charles) GABOR. He emigrated through New York City and went to northern New York State (Sissonwile-St. Joseph's paper company) and ended up in Massena, New York where I was born. He also had a brother who lived in New Jersey. Vasily married Ana SERBAC; she died in 1942 when I was born. I have an envelope from a Maria MARCOCEAN, nasc Serbac with the address Gherta Mare; jud Satu Mare from 1947. Of course-no one ever bothered to answer. I found my mother's family, ethnic Hungarians, at Turulung Romania 3 years ago and I would now like to find my father's during my next visit this July 1998. I see on a map that Gherta Mare is not too far from Turulung, so I am thinking of just writing a letter to see if anyone answers, but any help would be appreciated. Can I get emigration lists from the US Immigration? Thanks.

Webmaster's Note: You give no emigration date nor religion. Some passport records are available at the U.S. National Archives but I have no personal experience dealing with them.

I am searching for the genealogy of my Grandfather's family name, Cocus. According to our family Bible, my Grandfather, Silas Joseph COCUS was born in Romania 14 January 1891. His parents were John and Julia Cocus. Silas had five brothers (Steve, John, Frank, George, and Mike) and one sister, Annie. The story I have heard is that he came to the United States as a young stowaway. He is the only one to come to the United States. He married Virginia Mae 18 October 1918 in Virginia. They had 12 children; 11 survived. I have no other information on Silas Cocus or his family in Romania. Any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated.

TRANELLO, Debbie
eMail address: DebJTr@aol.com

I am researching two different names from Romania. I have a translated marriage certificate in which there are many misspellings. The names are ZOLLNER but my relatives spelled it ZELLNER and VORMITTAG. Joseph Zellner was born 4 October 1882 and Regina Vormittag Zellner was born 31 May 1888. I would appreciate any help anyone has concerning these names. The town is listed is Glogovat, County of Arad. On current maps Arad is listed but I cannot find any reference to Glogovat. It must have existed in 1931 which is when the certificate was translated. I would like to know if this spelling is correct and any history on the fate of that town. Thank you
Webmaster's Note: Glogovat is the Hungarian spelling, Glogowatz the German (it was a Germanic town) and Vladimirescu the Romanian, according to a Banat page on this website. I suggest you enter that placename into the FEEFHS Website Index and check the references. It was about 4 kilometers east of Arad in the Banat.
