I am searching for information about my Slovenian grandparents, Anton LOZAR (from Vrtovin) and Josefa PODGORNIK (from Ravne), and Ivan SCUKOVT (from Zajci) and Marija SKRBEC (from Zavino). They all came from the same general area, a town called Rifemberg / Rihenberka / Rifembergo (variations according to the ruling governments of the day) which is near the city of Novi Gorica along side the current Italian border in the Julian Alps or the neighboring city of Gorizia, Italy. At present, I can only surmise that they were born circa the 1850s-1860s. I am attempting to gather more information regarding details of their lives. Their great grand daughter, my mother, Mary Scukovt, and I emigrated from Triest /Trieste, Italy and arrived in New York harbor on Jan 2, 1952. Please write to me at the above address if you have any information on them.

ERICKSON, Dorothy
RR 1 Box 1404, Trego, Wisconsin 54888-9798

I have a special interest in the Mayerling Tragedy (Jan 30, 1889) and would like to share information with others. On this date, Rudolph and Mary VETSERA, his mistress, went to a hunting shack at Mayerling. A murder/suicide? followed. When Rudolph's father, Emperor Franz Joseph heard of the event, he sent stable hands to contain information. The body of Mary was sent to her parents. Money seems to have been used to insure that the parents and the stable hands that knew of the tragedy kept silent. Rudolph was at the time married to Stephanie and there was a daughter Elizabeth. There is a book on the tragedy, "Rudolph - Tragedy at Mayerling" by Count Carl LANYAY. The author's uncle, Prince Elemer Lanyay, was married to Rudolph's widow, Stephanie. Dorothy Erickson's grandfather, Johana KRASEVIC, was born June 6, 1865-66 in Austria. He apparently worked for Franz Joseph as a stableman until he left for the United States. He married Barbara ZAVEC on Jan 14, 1890 in Calumet, Michigan. Please contact Dorothy if you have any info on the Mayerling Tragedy.

She is also looking for information on John KRASEVIC, born May 19, 1884 in Laiback, Austria. He arrived in the U.S. on the vessel LaLarrains on Oct 15, 1902 in New York City. He lived in Sparta, Minnesota.

She is eeking information on the family of Joseph KRASOVECH, Aurora, Minnesota. He was born March 14, 1886 in Boronity, Austria and arrived in the U. S. on the vessel Mremen, May 3, 1902. His wife was Mary. They had Joseph born Feb 14, 1915.

My great-grandparents were Janez STRUKELJ (John Strukel) and Terezija Rosa STUPICA (Rose Stupica). They were married in Eveleth, Minnesota on 21 Sep 1905. John's arrival to the United States is unknown. Rose came to America on 27 May 1901. They raised a family of nine children, moving through Minnesota, Kansas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Wyoming, Colorado and Indiana following work as miners. They eventually lived out their lives in a Slovenian community in Elkhart, Indiana.

The STRUKELJ family came from Nova vas-Rakek, Slovenia. John was the son of Francisek STRUKELJ (born 1856) and Elizabeta CIMPERMAN (born 1858). Besides son Janez (John), other children that came to America were, Jozef, Anton, Pavla ARKO and Karol. A granddaughter, Marija INTIHAR, also came later. Most of them settled in Cleveland and came later to Elkhart.

The STUPICA family came from Gora, Slovenia. Terezija Rosa was the daughter of Gregor STUPICA and Terezija ROYTZ (ROITZ). One other son, Karol (Charles), came to America and raised a family in Eveleth, Minnesota and surrounding areas. He changed his surname to STUPCA. Any information on the above families would be helpful. Thanks.

MOVIUS, John
P.O. Box 4327, Davis, California 95617-5327
eMail address: feefhs@feefhs.org

Researching the MÄVIUS, MAEVIUS, MEVIUS, MOVIUS, von M&Ouml:VIUS, MOEVIUS, M&Ouml:BIUS, MOEBIUS surname and its many transliterations worldwide.
An old family line spelled MOVIA now lives in Milan, Rome and elsewhere in northern Italy including Sagrado (just west of Gorizia) Italy and the Italy - Slovenia border. It descended from those of the same surname living at Tolmazzo since the early 14th century. This Italian region is called the Fruili. It was part of Austria (Krain and Istrien = Carniola and Istria) prior to 1919. A MEVIA family also lives in Milan and elsewhere in northern and central Italy.

It is a thought that a line of the family MOVIA and/or the family MEVIA once lived in the region of Slovenia and Croatia. There they might have also spelled their surname MOVIAC / MOBIAC and/or MEVIAC / MEBIAC. Any sightings of this surname (or variants of MOV, MEV or MOB) are of interest.

An eMail message received on 14 October from a genealogist in Slovenia states that there is a MOVIA family operating an active vineyard and winery in Western Slovenia near the Italian border and they use their MOVIA name as a trademark on their wine in Slovenia. More information on their address is desired so I can contact them.

ZMRZEL, Susan PETERS
P. O. Box 10097, Ft. Mojave, Arizona 86427-0097
eMail address: zana@ctaz.com

I belong to the Slovenian Genealogical Society and have several queries about the ZMRZEL, FERJANCIC, KOKEC and MENONI surnames.

The following is all I know of Gregor ZMRZEL. He lived in, possibly, Adovonia, Italy, Aiduciner, Austria and Litija, Yugoslavia. He was a locksmith, a small man, very happy, colorful guy, always dressed up and ordered a horse and carriage to go through town. Would wave to everyone in town because they knew and liked him. He made pretty good money and would treat everyone to wine and beer. He was married to Katarina FERJANCIC and she died when she was 56. When Gregor was 67 he married a girl 22 and she died before him. He lived to be 90.

Gregor and Katarina had the following children: Louis born 16 Jun 1884 Aiduciner, Austria (per his naturalization papers) or Adovoina, Italy (per his wife's naturalization papers) and married Theresa Rose KOKEC 5 Feb 1905 (per her naturalization papers) in Austria. Louis and Theresa came to America 1913 for him and 1914 for her. They had three children: Yazez; Srecho; and one girl who died young.

He married Theresa Rose KOKEC 5 Feb 1905 (per Theresa's naturalization papers) in Austria and entered America at the port of New York 4 Aug 1913. Louis died 15 Dec 1949 Monrovia, Los Angeles, CA..

Theresa born 7 Oct 1883 Gradec, Yugoslavia, daughter of Joze KOKEC and wife Louise MENONI. They were married 13 Feb 1871 in Sveta Helena, Solvenia. Where is Sveta Helena? Josef's father is Martin Kokec and his mother is Apolonia ROVSK. Aloisia Menoni's father is Carl Menoni and her mother is Franciska CEBULAR.

Louise MENONI died 31 Jan 1970 Glendora, Los Angeles, CA. Theresa came to America 17 May 1914 at the port of New York with her 3 girls Caroline, Mary and Sarah.

Louis ZMRZEL and Theresa had the following children: Caroline born 28 Oct 1904 Gradec Yugoslavia, died 30 Oct 1990 Duarte, Los Angeles, CA, married 12 Jan 1920 Sutersville, PA to Frank CELIN.

Louise born Gradec, Yugoslavia, died there as a small child; Mary Louise born 15 April 1910 Gradec, Yugoslavia, died Feb 1985 Northern California, married Joseph James TIMKO; Sarah born. 13 Dec 1912 Gradec, Yugoslavia and married Walter BRIDEGUM; Christine Rose born 7 March 1915 Lowber, Westmoreland, PA, married 25 Nov 1937 John JOHNSON; Frances Louise born 6 Jan 1917 Lowber, Westmoreland, PA, married Thomas BURKE; Joseph Frances born 6 Aug 1918 Lowber, Westmoreland, PA, married 16 Aug 1937 Mary Lou CONTINI; William Charles born 20 Sept 1921 Lowber, Westmoreland, PA, died 19 Feb 1944 Library, Allegheny County, PA.

Joze KOKEC lived in Gradec and Litija, Yugoslavia, married Louise MENONI and worked for the Railroad in Litija. Joze and Louise had the following children: France; Johanna; Maricha; Julia; Christina who married Anthony YAKOPIN; Joze Jr. was drafted Apr 1914 into WWI and was killed in Serbia when a bridge was bombed and his body was never recovered; Theresa Rose born 7 Oct 1883 (per her naturalization papers) Gradec, Yugoslavia, died 31 Jan 1970 Los Angeles, CA, married 5 Feb 1905 (per her naturalization papers) to Louis / Alois ZMRZEL.

I research these surnames: ANDREWS, BATES, BECKER, BEVIS, BOGARD, BORDINGH, BRACKNEY, BRILL, BROWN, CEBULAR, CHATHAN, CLEMENT, COLLINS, CONTINI, CRISS / CRIST, CUVELLIER, DAVIS, DWIRE, ELLIS, FEDRIGA, FERJANCIC, FISHER, FOGLEMAN, FRANCE, GATES / GOTZ, GRIZZLE, HARRIS, HAWKINS, HEADY, HETTENBACH, HUDDLESTON, KRESS / CRESS, KOKEC, LUNDBECK, MANN, MARSURYNS, MAYHAM, McDOWELL, McINDOO, MENONI, MISENHEIMER, MORAN, NASH, NICHOLAS, NOFFSINGER / NAFZGER, NOWLIN, OWEN, PERKINS, PETERS, ROBINSON, ROVSK, (3) SMITH, SOOY, STEHELI / STEELE, STILLWELL, STUCKEY, SYMON, TILLMAN, TOLAN, VAN TIENHOVEN, VIGNE, VILLETT, WALKER, WICKS, ZMRZEL.
